We want our children to be inspired by the Olympic and Paralympic Values. These are:

Education and have requested the following clubs for next year:

• Football • Netball • Basketball • Tennis • Gymnastics • Athletics • Cricket • Rugby • Dance

Links with Sports Clubs

As part of the criteria to achieve the Sainsbury’s Sports Award there is an expectation that links will be made with local clubs to encourage pupils to participate and to broaden the sporting experiences pupils are offered. We have links to the following local clubs: Swanage Cricket Club who provided staff CPD training for all KS2 teachers this Summer. The cricket club coaches worked with pupils from Years 3,4 & 5. The school attended the Year 6 Swanage Cricket Tournament at the club and also the Dorset School Games Competition for Year 5 Boys and Years 5/6 girls.

Swanage Tennis Club who spent a day working with all classes. The school also attended the Swanage Tennis Tournament which was hosted at the club. Swanage & Wareham Rugby Club- our school advertise the club & encourage pupils to attend. The school also attended the Dorset Games Competition which was held at the club. In September, a coach from the club will be running our Year 5 & 6 Tag Rugby Club.

Swanage Town Football Club- the school encourages links with the club and in September a coach from the club will be running our Years 4, 5 & 6 Football Club.

Purbeck Runners- we have a member of staff who is a running coach. She has worked with our Gifted & Talented runners all year on a Friday afternoon.

Dorset Badminton Club- this is a new link which will commence in September. Staff from Years 3,4,5 & 6 will work alongside the coach during a 6-week block of lessons for each class. This will therefore be a CPD opportunity. The coach will then remain at school and run a Badminton Club for Years 5 & 6 in the first half of the Autumn Term & for Years 3 & 4 in the second half of the Autumn term. Swanage Gymnastics Club- the school promotes the club through posters and in September the coach will run an after-school club for K.S.2. In the first half of the Autumn Term the coach will spend a day at the school working alongside staff before curriculum gymnastics begins.

Professional Development of Staff

In order to achieve effective sports provision, it is vital to provide staff with on-going professional development.

Professional development is provided locally through the Purbeck ports Partnership which covers a comprehensive list of sports. In the Summer Term, all staff took part in an on- site Tag Rugby CPD session. Upper KS2 staff have also received Kwik Cricket CPD. Termly leadership meetings are attended at the Purbeck School and two members of staff also attended the Dorset P.E. Conference. The P.E. lead and Headteacher also attended a Youth Sport’s Trust Training session which encouraged schools to use sport as a tool to aide a specific cohort of children. As a result of this training our ‘Mouseketeers group was formed. This is a group of girls who lack confidence and feel that this stops them from fulfilling their potential in school. As part of the groups development they attended an Outdoor Learning Day at Carey Camp.

Inclusiveness of Sports & Physical Activity

All our pupils are encouraged to take part in as many different sports activities as possible. Our P.E. Curriculum covers athletics, dance, cricket, football, gymnastics, hockey, netball, rounders, swimming, tag rugby & tennis.

This year we have also run a Change 4 Life Club. Small groups of children have learnt about the importance of eating well and moving more. Children were selected by the class teachers and attended 4 sessions. 50 children from Years 1-6 have attended the club in school time. Our lead

member of staff attended the Change 4 Life Training provided through our Sports Partnership Membership.

Pupils have participated in an increased number of intra-sports competitions this year, making good use of our school house system of praise groups. We now have house captains in place for September. These were voted for by the pupils and one of their roles will be to assist with the intra-sport activities.

We continue to seek pupil’s advice about their ‘wish list’ of activities through our pupil questionnaires. It was for this reason that we held a Dance Day with all K.S.2 pupils working with Starlight Dance Academy.

The Purbeck Sports Partnership organises multi- skills events for pupils from Year 2 – 6 which ensures that pupils of all abilities can experience an inter-sport opportunity.

We have 10 sports ambassadors who are responsible for organising playtime equipment. These pupils also assist with setting up equipment for lessons and assisting with whole school sports events like Sports Day.

Year 5 pupils attended a water sports based residential at Rockley Park which developed their physical skills, team work & resilience through kayaking, wind surfing, paddle boarding & sailing.

Year 6 pupils attended a residential at PGL (Osmington) which focused on team building & leadership.

These both proved very popular with pupils of all abilities.

It is rewarding that the number of pupils participating in school sport has increased again this year. We will continue to bbuild on this next year with an increased range of extra-curricular opportunities.
