Grace and Peace from Pastor Gary
I believe in…the communion of saints. These familiar words from the Apostles’
Creed express our deep convictions about eternal life and our life together.
Our hope in our Risen Lord gives us confidence and comfort when our loved ones die and life on earth comes to an end. With each funeral service at St. Mark’s I
have offered up this prayer prior to the Lord’s Prayer:
God of all grace, we give you thanks because by His death our Savior Jesus Christ destroyed the power of death and by His resurrection He opened the Kingdom of heaven to all believers. Make us certain that because He lives we shall live also, and that neither death nor life, nor things present nor things to come, will be able to separate us from your love in Christ Jesus our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.
Because Jesus lives, we say farewell with tears and look to the future time when
we shall see the Lord and our loved ones. For you who have recently said farewell to family members and cherished friends, may these trustworthy promises of God
expressed in the aforementioned prayer be your daily source of consolation and encouragement.
The communion of saints is experienced among us whenever we bear one another’s burdens, share each other’s joys, pray for our church family, and
cultivate relationships within St. Mark’s. It is comfortable and convenient to maintain a cluster of friendships within the congregation. Yet what you are
missing is the mutual blessing of knowing other people, listening to their life story, gaining wisdom and insights, and cultivating a greater sense of community among the communion of saints. Please be willing to reach out with grace and
peace to those whom you do not know, and see how Jesus can bless you and this Church in new ways!
In Christ’s love, Pastor Gary

We give thanks to God for members of our church family who
have entered the Kingdom of heaven and whose funeral
services were recently held in our sanctuary – Tony Di Cerbo,
Liz Archard, and Kevin Skrenes. Many thanks are extended to
our Board of Congregational Care and loving friends who provided hospitality for
each funeral reception.
Please remember those who are receiving treatment for cancer and/or recovering from
cancer related surgeries: Patti Cutter, Derek Emmerson, Sue Haenisch, Barb Kocher, and
Christy Lunde.
We rejoice as Kim Meeks and Jesse Carroll are united in Christian marriage on Saturday,
October 22nd at St. Mark’s.
Soli Deo Gloria was truly a wonderful and joyful day in the House of the Lord! We give
thanks to all of our music ministers and church staff members for their devotion to the
Lord.
Everyone is encouraged to gather together for this memorable milestone in our life and ministry. Bishop Julian Gordy will be our very special guest and Presiding Minister. Our Unity Worship Service begins at 10:30 a.m. with Sunday School for all ages at 9:15. Our catered banquet will be served at noon.

Coordinated by Mike Hamilton. (basement choir room).

“Because God loves you” Community Lunch
October 4, 11 am - 1 pm
Let’s do lunch!
On Tuesday, October 4, St. Mark’s is going to serve lunch to our community.
A completely free event, for no other reason than to tell people that God
loves them. Reaching out to local businesses and the hospital in an act of
good will, we will serve lunch from 11 am to 1 pm in the front parking lot
(near the office entrance) as supplies last. We’ll set up a few tents and tables
for those who want to visit and relax; and carry out options for those with just a few minutes to spare.
We will grill and serve hamburgers and hotdogs, offer chips, fruit and cookies as well as a couple drink
options. Volunteers and donations are requested. A sign up list is in Communication Central for
food donations as well as volunteers. We have chosen October 4, as it is during fall break and will
allow some of our youth to participate. A new outreach, this could be amazing, join us if you can.
PAGE 8 ST. MAR K’ S MESSEN GER
The generation before us of German rocket and missile scientists had a vision for St. Mark’s to be a place for grace in the heart of Huntsville. The founders likely never realized what St. Mark’s would grow into what it is today, but they did have a significant impact in building and progressing
the church both physically, spiritually and in faith. That same vision is ever so strong within St. Mark’s today and it is our turn to help grow and impact the future generations. Our Freedom to Grow capital campaign is the first step to allow us as a congregation to plant the seeds.
The Freedom to Grow campaign is focused on debt elimination allowing St. Mark’s to free up resources for future ministries. Freedom to Grow is about spreading these seeds of growth with our discipleship, outreach, stewardship and faith. This growth is not just within St. Mark’s but in our community to “Celebrate, Serve and Make Disciples for Christ” so others may see what a wonderful place of Grace it is.
You are encouraged to pray for St. Mark’s and God’s guidance and provi-dence during our Prayer Vigil on Saturday, October 8, from 7 a.m – 7 p.m. in the chapel. Our members are asked to commit to a 30 minute time frame, and a prayer guide will be provided. Please sign up soon in Communication Central.
On Commitment Sunday, October 9, we will gather for worship and be fed by the Word and Sacrament. Commitment cards for the Freedom to Grow capi-tal campaign will be distributed that morning and offered in gratitude to our gracious God. Households that are absent will receive a commitment card in the mail with the request that it is mailed to the church office by October 20. The pledge totals will be announced on Celebration Sunday, October 23rd.
We ask families consider a sacrificial 3-year commitment towards the cam-paign to help current and future generations of St. Mark's.
Our ultimate goal is to raise $1.2 Million to fully eliminate our debt!

Your Church Council Update…
Soli Deo Gloria Musical Worship, “God in the Ashes”, and “God’s Work, Our Hands” – St. Mark’s
is tremendously blessed to have so many great and talented people. Thank you to all who
planned, organized, coordinated, and devoted their time and talents to these extraordinary
events. As a member, I could not have been more proud. God is truly in our midst.
St. Mark’s 65th Anniversary – A major highlight will be Bishop Gordy’s visit on Sunday,
October 23, 2016. On that day we will have a Unity Service at 10:30 followed by a
celebration banquet.
Volunteers – Thank you to everyone who offered their time and expertise to our many and
various programs and initiatives. The immediate response to our request for assistance a
few weeks ago was exceptional. It is noted that, if your time and schedule allows
volunteering, even for only a few hours, we continue to need your help. Just call the office
and discuss how you can help with Emily or Traci. The office number is 256-539-4361.
“Freedom to Grow”, our three-year capital campaign to eliminate our debt is now underway.
Once successfully completed, we will be free to devote the funds currently devoted to
mortgage payments, (approximately $175,000 per year), to one or several future ministries
as decided by the congregation. This is an exciting time for our church. Please prayerfully
consider how you can help us achieve this most noteworthy, albeit challenging, church
goal.
Board of Congregational Care – I would like to highlight and recognize the mission and
accomplishments of one of our boards each month. The Board of Congregational Care has
the mission to “Convey the love of Jesus Christ by providing care, compassion, and concern
for our congregation.” During the month of August this small team of dedicated
individuals accomplished the following: 5 hospital and rehabilitation visits, 5 home visits,
4 Telecare contacts, 6 “Angel Transport” to chemo therapy, 3 meals for “Feed My Sheep”,
1 bereavement. Gwen Dornbos and her team are doing an outstanding job.
Budget – I am pleased to announce that expenses are slightly down and giving increased
over the past few months. As of the end of August, giving exceeded expenses by 3.9%. If
this trend continues, we are cautiously optimistic that this year’s budget and expenses will
be met. Given our position just a few months ago, this is most encouraging. Without ques-
tion, the positive impact of the congregation’s awareness and support, including those gen-
erously supporting the “13th-month giving” initiative for 2016, allowed us to at improve
our financial position from a few months ago. We aren’t out of the woods yet, so your con-
tinued support is needed and very much appreciated. Thank you.
