A NOTE FROM FATHER KEVIN
Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
+ Pax et Bonum!
Welcome to St. Maria Goretti today as we continue to celebrate the Season of Christmas and, in particular today, the Feast of the Epiphany of the Lord. Today we remember that star, the three kings, and that journey that led them to find God in their lives. We pray today to always follow the light of Christ in our lives, to always be truly wise enough to know that we need God in our lives, and to stick always with Christ’s teachings and example! We do welcome all of our guests and visitors who join us for Mass this weekend. Please know that wherever you’re from and whatever brought you to Westfield this weekend that all of us are very happy that you are here with us to worship and give thanks to our Lord God.
This weekend, I want to make you aware of a change that will taking place around here at the Parish. I have asked Bishop Doherty to send us some extra help at least for the next couple of months. The Bishop has most kindly agreed and will be naming Fr. Ted Rothrock, Pastor of St. Elizabeth Seton Parish and Dean of the Carmel Deanery, as temporary Administrator of St. Maria Goretti. I will remain as Pastor of the Parish. I have asked for this help at this time because of my health situation. Over the last few months, the Multiple Myeloma has continued to grow in my blood, even while I continued to take near weekly chemotherapy treatments. Clearly it is time to do something different. This week I will begin new treatments with more aggressive drugs. This is not unusual. My doctors and nurses at I.U. Health are on top of this. This is part of fighting this particular disease. But it is going to take more time and more effort. To be real honest, how the new medicines and chemotherapy will affect me is unknown. That’s also why the details on exactly how Fr. Rothrock as Administrator, myself as Pastor, and the rest of our Pastoral Team will work together and will need to be continually worked out over the next several weeks as we determine exactly what the needs are. The appointing of an Administrator guarantees that the leadership of the Parish will continue seamlessly, that Fr. Mike and Fr. Aaron will always have the help that they need, especially if I am unable to help them, and that St. Maria Goretti is taken care of no matter what. I will need to be out of the office more. They are asking me to substantially cut the number of hours that I work each week. At the same time that I begin these new treatments, they are asking me to get more rest, alleviate stress as much as possible from my life, get more exercise, and eat better. I can do this. But I am clearly going to need your understanding and support. This will be a change for all of us. And yet, working together, I know that we are all going to be fine! I did want to make sure that you heard about this from me before the rumor mill takes over. And once again, I humbly ask for your prayers as I continue to battle this particular cancer. I want to thank Bishop Doherty for his kindness and outstanding concern that he has showed to me. And I am also most grateful to Fr. Rothrock for his willingness to help out his brother priests in our given situation. We’ll keep you posted in this space as things continue to develop.
This weekend we hear the initial invitation to all of us to attend the 2020 Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner!on Saturday, January 25, 6–10 pm. Sponsored once again by the Parish Council, this fun evening is designed to help us to get to know each other better and to help us build community. I sincerely hope that as many of us as possible will be able to attend this year’s event. Mark your calendars now. Sign up to attend as soon as possible. And get ready for one of the most fun evenings of the entire year!
All our high school folks are invited to attend next weekend’s Winter Youth Retreat. All kinds of effort has gone into planning and getting ready for this awesome weekend!
Have a great week! Let us keep one another in our prayers! In Christ, Fr. Kevin
Conscience in the soul is the root of all true courage. If a man would be brave, let him learn to obey his conscience.
Welcome! For more than 24 years now, we have been building the Kingdom of God, not with a few people, but with everyone! Please accept my warmest welcome, and I pray you will come to know St. Maria Goretti as we all do—our Spiritual Home and Loving Community. We are glad you are here and look forward to meeting you! God Bless you. —Father Kevin WELCOME: BERNADETTE MCCLEARY

WANT TO DOUBLE YOUR R DONATION?N?
Many employers (or their charitable founda-tions) match donations made by their employees to charitable organizations
dollar for dollar, sometimes even more. These are called Matching Gifts or Matching Funds. Some employers match gifts to religious organizations, but many don’t; how-ever, educational agencies such as St. Maria Goretti School are usually eligible to receive matching gifts. Do you know if your employer has such a program? Ask your company’s Human Resource Department and be sure to let us know what you find out. This simple in-quiry could double your contribution without costing you one penny more! If you have questions or need docu-mentation of your contributions, contact Kevin Muller, k.muller@smgonline. org or 317-867-3213, ext. 1127, in the Parish Office. UNITED WAY PLEDGES AND SMG Do you know that you can direct your United Way pledges to benefit our Shep-herd’s Gate Food Pantry? All United Way pledges directed to St. Maria Goretti go to the Pantry. You may see “Shepherd’s Gate Food and Baby Supplies” listed, “St. Maria Goretti,” or code “7096.” If none of these is listed, you can fill in “Shepherd’s Gate Food Pantry,” and the funds will be directed to St. Maria Goretti.

Registration for new fami-lies begins January 19. The
registration link will be in the January 19 bulletin. IMMUNIZATION NOTICE FOR 5TH GRADE PARENTS
Eleven-year-olds entering 6th grade in Indiana are required to receive the men-ingitis vaccine, and an updated tetanus/pertussis vaccine known as “Tdap”. The
“tetanus booster” cannot be received until after the 10th or 11th birthday (depending on the drug manufac-turer). This vaccine has dramatically lowered the num-ber of pertussis cases in middle school and high school students in Indiana. The meningi-tis vaccine has reduced incidents of this seri-ous disease in our adolescent and young adult group. Make sure all vaccines are re-ceived before entering 6th grade. If you have questions regarding the above, call the nurse’s office, 317-896-5582, ext. 204.
