TRANSCRIPT
Dear Dames and Protectors of the Guild,
This will be my
final greetings to
you as your
President General.
As of the Annual
Gathering in April,
I will be turning the
reigns over to a
new group of
officers. The
Nominating
Committee Report
of the 2013-2015
Slate of Officers to
be voted on is on
page 8 of this
newsletter. My
thanks go to Karen McClendon (Chair), Sue
Smith and Mike Schenk for their hard work in
creating the slate.
It has been a real joy to have served as your
Reorganizing President General. Since many
of you will not be able to attend the first
Annual Gathering I have included the
President General’s Report with this
publication so you can see what has been
accomplished since we started the
reorganizational process in November 2011.
My thanks go to Marlene and Edward
Wilkinson for sponsoring The Guild at the
Army Navy Club. Marlene made all the
arrangements for the Inaugural Gathering. It
should be a very nice event. The Call is on the
back page. As a reminder: the date is set for
Tuesday, April 9, 2013 at 11:30am. The
officers will meet for a board meeting at
10:30am (prior to the Annual Gathering) . It
will be a luncheon followed by a business
meeting. The board voted not to have a guest
speaker so we can have some meet-and-greet
time after the business has been accomplished.
There will be many items to vote on at this
meeting. All items have been approved by
your Governing Officers so will be
recommendations from the board. The
proposed Bylaws are attached.
Personally, this chapter in my book of life has
been a memorable one. The National Guild of
St. Margaret will continue to be important to
me. I thank you for all your kind notes, well-
wishes, kudos, etc.
Your officers appreciate your support of our
efforts. If you ever have a question, please feel
free to contact any one of them.
I leave you with a favorite passage of mine
that reminds me about my love of genealogy
and lineage groups:
Give the story of it to your children, and let
them give it to their children, and their
children to another generation.

St Margaret's Stone
St. Margaret's Stone is a large sandstone at the entrance of
Pitreavie Business Park, located 2 miles (3 km) south southeast
of the centre of Dunfermline. The original site of the stone is
unknown.
Tradition suggests that it was here that Queen Margaret rested in
1069 after her arrival in Scotland enroute to Malcolm Canmore's
palace at Dunfermline. It is also thought she used the stone as a
resting-place on many subsequent occasions.
The stone measures 8½ feet (2.6m) long by 4 feet 7 inches
(1.4m) high and 1½ feet (.5m) thick. The stone now rests on a
stone bench-seat and is engraved with the name "St. Margaret's
Stone". An explanation of its history is on the base beneath.
The stone has been described as heavily cup-marked, but these
markings are more likely to have been the result of weathering.

The Diamond Jubilee
The President General sent a letter of congratulations from The
Guild’s members to Queen Elizabeth upon the celebration of the
Diamond Jubilee. Below is her response.

Carlisle Castle by James E. Mattern, Sr. , FSA Scot
Chieftan, Clan Dunbar International
GSM #485
King David I, who reigned from 1124 to 1153, the youngest son
of Queen Margaret and King Malcolm III of Scotland, is
recorded as having financed major building at massive Carlisle
Castle, which became the center for government of his realm.
William Rufus of England erected the early wooden castle in
1092, and it was replaced with red stone in the early twelfth
century by brothers-in-law, King Henry I of England and King
David I of Scotland.
In the summer of 2009, as Chieftain of Clan Dunbar, I led a
Clan tour group to Scotland and Carlisle Castle was easily, for
me, our most memorable stop. We entered the great castle on a
clear but chilly morning, and wound our way into the Keep and
up to the second floor. We passed the great hall and more, but
nothing prepared me for what we found upstairs. Our group
entered a gallery with displays of the period, and we noticed a
heavy glass door leading off to a small chamber, heavily locked
and barred. My curious wife read the small print on the door,
and buttonholed the docent who was just leaving the chamber. I
don't know how she did it, but moments later I had the honor
and privilege of entering the small stone chamber where King
David supposedly died. As a descendant of King David this was
a heart-stopping moment - I learned later that this room is kept
closed to visitors, not only because of the respect given to King
David, but also because of the many unique carvings on the
walls leading into the chamber - almost graffiti - that prisoners
in later centuries created. (Approximately 1480)The kind-
hearted keeper kept very strict watch as several of us entered the
chamber, and took photos of the tiny room and its table draped
with the Saltire. It was an eerie feeling, posing for a photo in
King David's death chamber, and I felt as though nothing had
changed in this space since he had died, although over a
thousand years had passed. We left the chamber in awe, and the
docent very firmly said that we were not to tell anyone that we
had been there, as she locked the door behind us.
Richard Oram, in his book David I, the King Who Made
Scotland, says on page 202, "In the spring of 1153 his health
began to deteriorate sharply, knowing that his end was
approaching, David made his peace with God and prepared for
death." At length, on the morning of 29th May, he was found
dead in his bed in his chamber in the Great Tower at Carlisle.
From Carlisle, his body was carried to Dunfermline for burial in
the abbey which he had built there, to be interred alongside the
tombs of his father, mother and brothers. John of Hexham tells
how the Cortege reached the crossing of the Forth at
Queensferry, "and found the waters appearing to be uncrossable
due to wild, raging gale-force winds. When David's coffin was
placed in the boat, the winds subsided, and the vessel was able
to cross in safety, but raged again with unabated fury when its
cargo was lifted safely ashore". King David was born circa 1080
and died in 1153 at a very old age for his time .
I was also privileged to visit Dunfermline Abbey later during the
same tour, but that is another story.

Did You Know?
The Guild has its own song, “Margaret Loved the Poor.” The song was written in 1981 by Stephen Somerville. At the time Mr.
Somerville was with St. Margaret’s Parish, Midland, Ontario, Canada. Full permission to publish was granted by the composer and
obtained through the courtesy of GSM member, the late Father James S. Mc Givern. The song, sung by St. Jude’s Episcopal Church
choir in Glendale, California, for the Guild’s 10th anniversary, was under the direction of the Choir Director/Organist Russell Lloyd
Wheeler (GSM member #178).

Tartan
In a letter dated 10 Sep 1991 from the Founder, Mrs. Gerrie
Wheeler, to Dr. Clifton Brooks, it is stated that The National
Guild of St. Margaret of Scotland chose Caledonia Modern* as
the official tartan of The Guild.
“It is possible that this was one of the tartans favoured by the
fashionable ladies of Edinburgh, who disapproved of the Act of
the Union and were anti-government and pro-Jacobite in their
sympathies. As a sign of their feelings, they were wont to wear
tartan plaids and silken scarves. Since it belongs to no clan, it is
one of those setts which anyone not possessing a tartan of his own
or her own is entitled to wear. Its age is unknown but it almost
certainly existed at the beginning of the 18th century”.
From the Lochcarron website
Some of the members from the original St. Margaret group are not
lineal descendants of St. Margaret. The board decided to continue
the tradition of Caledonia Modern to be inclusive rather then
exclusive. By choosing Caledonia Modern all members have the
opportunity to wear a Tartan. The board also chose to allow
members to wear their Clan Tartan if they prefer.
The President General contacted three different vendors to find
one that does quality work and offered the most affordable prices.
The three were presented to the board and the vote was to have
Lochcarron USA as the official vendor of The Guild’s Tartan. The
company is based in Scotland with a warehouse in North Conway,
NH. Having the warehouse in New Hampshire enables members
to purchase true Scottish Tartan with more affordable shipping
prices as they only pay for shipping costs within the USA.
An order form for ordering ties, sashes, etc. is located on the
adjacent page. If cloth is available in Scotland members should
receive their orders within 2 weeks. If the cloth has to be woven it
can take up to 4 months to receive your order (weaving takes 12
weeks).
We hope members will have fun wearing a Tartan to the Annual
Gathering (Caledonia Modern or your Clan) or representing The
Guild at events such as Highland Games, etc. This will be a way
of honoring our Scottish roots as well as being unique during the
Hereditary Society Fortnight in Washington DC in April.
Caledonia Modern by Lochcarron

GSM Insignia and Apparel
The organization has a couple of programs available to Guild
members. The first being the official Guild insignias and second
apparel. City Pride, LTD., the official jeweler of GSM has a
wide selection of items to pick from and can be viewed on their
website, www.cityprideltd.com under hereditary jewelry. Since
inception of the insignia, orders have been steady. If you are
planning to go to Washington in April and don’t have your
insignia I’d encourage you to place your order as quickly as
possible.
For those members who have filed a supplemental through
another of St. Margaret’s children (other than the one used for
membership) a special pin, a martlet is available for purchase.
The martlet can be pinned onto the insignia ribbon or on your
lapel.
In late Fall, 2012 the tartan (Caledonia Modern) pattern, was
reintroduced as the official pattern of the Guild. Members can
choose from a number of selected items. There are ties, bow
ties, sashes, scarves, tams, mini rosette sashes and shawls.
When the initial order was placed in November for pre-orders,
extra items were ordered. I will be bringing one of each to
Washington to show and sell. If anyone has an urgent request
for a specific item (article of clothing), I will be glad to bring it
along.
If you have any questions regarding insignias or apparel you can
reach me at [email protected]. I will also have martlets
available for purchase at $15.00 each.
