Old Scholars Newsletter - May 2017
St Margaret’s Day and Old
Scholars' AGM
Thanks to all who were are able to join us at
the school service on Thursday 15th June.
For those that arrived from 8:30am the
Museum was open for your comfort at the
rear of the Law Smith building.
The AGM was held after the Service, in
Nutter Thomas Building, with morning tea
following.
We ask for your support of the Association,
nominations are required for Committee
Members. Our activities during the year are to
assist with ‘Back to SPW BBQ’, produce a
newsletter (Mail Chimp), plan and assist with
running an annual Old Scholars event,
coordinate the Elaine Balfour-Ogilvy
Scholarship Application process, and
support activities in the Museum/Old
Scholars' Archives.
President's Report
Welcome to the 2017 Old Scholars
Newsletter. You will notice some changes
afoot as we try to keep with the times! We
hope this new format helps keep you well
informed, but please understand that the
system is still in teething stages so stick with
us as we explore new territory. We're happy
to have your feedback, especially if it comes
with an offer of help, so if you can offer some
assistance and save us some typesetting and
graphic design nightmares, we'd love to hear
from you.
I was honoured to attend the Bangka Day
Memorial Service in February, held annually
at the South Australian Women's Playing
Fields. As Woodlands Old Scholars we
particularly remember Elaine Balfour Ogilvy,
an Old Scholar and nurse killed in action on
that day, but also the many Australian women
who have served their country overseas in
the armed forces. This year was the 75th
Anniversary Service, and Dr Brendan Nelson
gave a very moving address.
Thank you to those of you that attended the
'Evening In The Chapel' late last year.
Replacing the annual dinner, the cocktail
event format was a wonderful success. The
event even raised a few hundred dollars that
will go toward the continuation of committee
operations. We would love to see you at this
year's event, to be held in similar style on
Saturday 4th November 2017.
As always, thank you to the committee
members, in particular our hard-working
Treasurer and Secretary Louise Sorrell and
Lesley Woods and school Development
Officer Karen Schaumloffel. We are also
extremely grateful for the ongoing support of
the SPW school, the School Council and
Principal Christopher Prance. Thank you also
to the hardworking and generous team of
volunteers in our Museum.
After 3 years at the helm, this will be my final
newsletter as President. I am stepping down
at the AGM this year and focusing on my
family and growing our little Architecture
practice. Thank you for the support I have
received over my term, and I look forward to
seeing the Association grow and prosper in
the future under new leadership.
Amy Smedley (Adamson '98)
Important Information

distribution via email, it will also be placed on
SPW website and on Facebook.

The Museum is always open on a Monday
between 10am and 2pm, but any other day
can be arranged.
St Margaret's Day
Please come along to the school service to
be held on Thursday 15th June at 8:45am,
followed by the Old Scholars' AGM. A cup of
tea or coffee will be available in Nutter
Thomas Building following the AGM. If you
arrive early the Museum will be open before
the service so there is no need to stand
outside in the cold!
Please make it a priority to attend the AGM,
we need to form a quorum so that the
incorporation requirements are met. It is only
a short meeting, so we hope to see many of
you there.
NEW COMMITTEE
Members are urgently required. For the
future of the Old Scholars' Association this is
vital. Please consider nominating and
standing for election at the AGM. It is not an
onerous job it is vital for the continuance of
the Association that the committee gains new
members. We ask for your support of the
Association, nominations are required for
Committee Members.
Our activities during the year are to assist
with ‘Back to SPW BBQ’, produce a
newsletter, plan an Old Scholars' School
Reunion, coordinate the Elaine Balfour-Ogilvy
Scholarship Application process, and support
activities in the Museum/Old Scholars
Archive.
Reunion News Barossa / Clare Valley annual lunch
Friday 27th May 2016
The lunch as always, was planned for the last
Friday in May, at Pindarie Winery, a
wonderful location just out of Tanunda. The
weather was very wintry but the open fire and
the wine kept us snug and warm.
Numbers were low to start with as the OS
Newsletter came out later than expected. An
email was sent around, with some phone
calls and a group coming up from Adelaide,
boosting the numbers, we had 16 sit down to
a very enjoyable lunch. We missed a few of
the regular attendees, Jo Adams was in
London, welcoming a new granddaughter and
Penny Holmes was playing golf.
A message came through from Gyysey
Sandow from Clare, saying “could we all meet
in Clare next year”. We will hopefully make
that the destination for our next lunch in 2018.
Thank you everyone for coming, it was great
catching up.
Prue Maitland
Perth reunion - 2016
We held our Annual reunion at The Duxton, in
Perth on Sunday June 19th. It was well
attended by many girls with several
apologies, too, and overall contact was made
by about 40 of the 60 old Scholars in WA.
Present were Penny Penno (Goss), Jill Larrit
(Nitschke) Jane Lloyd (Crank), Mary
Jordan(Hamilton), Vicki Richards, Penny
Kilby (Blackburne), Veronica Scott Killner
Susan Fielding (Ey) Christine Longmire
(Banks) Hilary Brooke, Tracy Bauer(Young),
Candice Haines, Penny Smallwood and Libby
Dadd (Pavy).
It is always a great afternoon, with High Tea
and Champagne, a lot of laughter and some
tales, particularly from the Boarding House,
and discussions about members of staff,
those we liked and those we loathed!
Sadly, we lost two Old Scholars during the
year, Ann Sands (Lewis, Aged 93) Connie
Pittaway (Ryan – who started at the school in
1929!). These ladies will be missed! On
another note, Tracy Bauer who was at the
school when it closed, was pregnant at our
reunion in 2015 and had twin boys not long
after, so we have had births and deaths over
the year.
We look forward to doing it again at our next
reunion on Sunday June 17th, 2017

St Peter's Woodlands
Grammar School Turns 20!
Can you believe it has been nearly 20 years
since Woodlands closed? Many changes
have occurred to grow SPW into an
extraordinary Primary School, and you are
welcome to visit, see what it has become and
be a part of its future.
Did you know that you are welcome to visit
the Old Scholars' Museum at the back of the
Law Smith building, and take a tour of the
school? With help from the Woodlands Trust
Board and support from SPW, the Old
Scholars’ Association will once again
financially support an Administration Assistant
for 2017. You can be confident that if you
make an appointment, there is a friendly face
in the Museum and someone to guide you
around the school. We would also love your
help in the Museum as a part of a group of
wonderful volunteers, or as part of the
committee to help with essential and social
functions of the Association.
Is your name on the honour boards? Are
there photos of you on the walls? Maybe it's
time to take a look!

Dawn Geyer OAM (Jude Class’50)
It is with great sadness that we report the
death on 23rd August 2016, of our esteemed
Old Scholar, Dawn Geyer.
With the closure of Woodlands in 1998,
Dawn’s passion for the preservation of
Woodland’s history, led to the establishment
of the Woodlands Archives /Museum. She
volunteered her time and expertise at the
same time encouraging others to join her in
her quest.
Dawn was awarded the Medal of the Order of
Australia (OAM) in 2010,
“For service to the community through
contributions to the Woodlands Church of
England Girls Grammar School.”
Thanks to Dawn, the Woodlands history and
memorabilia has been preserved and a
wonderful legacy has been left for both the
Old Scholars and the St Peter’s Woodlands
students to enjoy.
Miss Daphne Gum MBE OAM MACE,
Boarding House Mistress and teacher, 1942-
1944, 1946-1948
Much loved by students during her time at
Woodlands, Daphne passed away earlier this
year at the wonderful age of 101.
Daphne was born in Pinnaroo on 24 January
1916 and was a member of a family who
were pioneering farmers in the area. At three
years old the family moved firstly to Crystal
Brook and then later to Adelaide, where she
attended Methodist Ladies College (MLC).
Her desire to become a teacher was fulfilled
when she began her Kindergarten and
Primary School training at MLC in 1933.
Fortuitously MLC had established a three-
year training course for teachers which
opened up a whole new world for Daphne.
After her graduation in 1935 she took up a
position as governess on a station near
Broken Hill, with the Barnfield family. The
three Barnfield girls, Mary, Wilga and
Barbara, later became boarders at
Woodlands. And so began Daphne’s
connection with Woodlands.
In 1942 a position became available at
Woodlands for a teacher in residence, to work
with both the Kindergarten and the Junior
School: this suited Daphne admirably.
Besides teaching history to lower classes,
Daphne also supervised boarders’ homework
after school, headed a table in the dining
room, saw the girls through to lights out at
night, accompanied them to St Peter’s
Church, Glenelg, on Sunday mornings and
arranged the occasional Saturday excursion.
It was a difficult time during the war years
with all the precautions required, such as
preparing the blackout at night, coping with
rations and early morning air raid drills.
In 1944 the headmistress, Miss Millington,
asked Daphne to plan a new class,
“Transition”, for the little girls between
kindergarten and Form 1 (Grade 3). It was a
memorable year for Daphne, who was free to
plan her own programmes and work.
The following year, encouraged by Miss
Millington who knew that this was a long-held
desire of Daphne’s, she moved to Melbourne
to take up a position in the Spastic Centre at
the Royal Children’s Hospital. However,
within a year she was approached to return to
Adelaide to help plan the establishment of a
similar centre for children with cerebral palsy
in Adelaide. And so, At Miss Millington’s
invitation, Daphne returned to Woodlands in
1946, to take charge of the Junior Boarding
House, while at the same time working at the
Children’s Hospital during the day in the
newly established Spastic Centre in the
Outpatients Department.
Many years of work at the Spastic Centre
followed, both at North Adelaide and at
Ashford House on Anzac Highway. She was
also involved with Marjorie Black House, for
people with mental health problems. In
retirement she learned to played chess, took
up sketched old buildings, was President of
the MLC/Annesley Old Scholars’ Association,
attended lectures at Adelaide University and
travelled to the Middle and Far East. With
such a full and productive life, Daphne never
forgot her Woodlands connections. She
remained in contact with many Old Scholars
whom she had known from those early days
and saw them regularly. She joined our Old
Scholars’ Association as an Associate
member and loved to receive our newsletters.
She was an amazing lady, with very wide
interests and with a great desire to help the
less fortunate in her community. She will be
sadly missed by all those Woodlands girls
who loved her and whom she knew and loved
in return.
Theresa Lindsay Hayward OAM. (1925-
2016)
Theresa attended Woodlands from an early
age as a boarder. She lived at Reynella. She
enjoyed school life, played tennis and hockey,
and belonged to several groups, including the
Cadets (Girl Guides) and the Clan of St.
Margaret. She became a prefect in 1942, and
Head Prefect in 1943. She made many life-
long friends.
After gaining a Social Science degree at the
University of Adelaide, Theresa moved to the
University of Sydney to complete an
almoners’ course, in which capacity she
worked at the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital in
Sydney, and the Royal Adelaide Hospital.
She then moved to England in 1955, and
remained there, living in London for thirteen
years, working as a social worker at The
Hospital for Sick Children in Great Ormonde
Street and the Family Centre in Hackney. She
also attended the Tavistock Clinic.
Returning to Australia in 1968 to a position at
the Royal Alexandra Hospital for Children
Sydney, she was later awarded an OAM for
her work with families of children suffering
from spina bifida.
Theresa retired in 1980, but continued
voluntarily in social work and with the local
Meals on Wheels Service.
She found life in London, particularly
attending theatre and music concerts, very
stimulating. She was an inveterate traveller in
the UK, Australia, and indeed world-wide as
long as she was able and her home in
Sydney was always open to friends, relatives
and their children including 18 godchildren.
She frequently visited Adelaide, and her
brother and his family in country South
Australia. She was very generous – a big lady
with a big heart!
Theresa died in Sydney on December 20th
and is survived by her sister Virginia, who
lives in Greece, and her late brother’s family.
Lynette Bartlett (Lashmar ’62)
Lynette began her school days at Woodlands
in 1959, coming from Kangaroo Island and
entering the boarding house as a Year 8
student (Form 4A).
As a child growing up in the country she had
observed and sketched many birds on the
family property. She was a very talented artist
and spent much of her free time (and not so
free time) at school sketching all the things
she loved – animals, in particular horses,
birds, plants and flowers. One enduring tale
handed down by school friends was the
memory of the day she was caught drawing
horses in class, instead of paying attention to
her schoolwork. Her punishment was to draw
100 horses for the teacher. It was no real
punishment! She filled an A3 size drawing
sheet with images of heads, tails, hooves and
manes – in fact any part of a horse’s
anatomy. The whereabouts of that sheet
remains a mystery to this day.
Lyn became a nurse after leaving school and
the sketching continued. In the far north in the
Quorn area where she lived and nursed, she
wandered the Willochra Plain sketching much
of what she saw. She later became a
specialist nurse in the Department of Cardio-
Vascular Medicine at Flinders Medical
Centre. In the Adelaide Hills area where she
then lived, she observed the local Flora and
Fauna and kept a record for 20 years. From
her Field Journals, recorded in pen and ink
and watercolour, she selected several
illustrations which were published in 2011 in
book form under the title of “Lyn’s Journal”.
Sadly Lyn passed away in 2016, but Lyn’s
Journal is a lasting memory of her artistic
talent. Beautifully illustrated with detailed
notes on the wildflowers and native fauna
which she observed, her book is available
from “The Cedars” museum and gallery in
Hahndorf. It is also available through the
Flinders Medical Centre Foundation (all
proceeds towards the Foundation).
News
To all my past compatriots,
When my sister, Rosemary Teale (nee
Hastwell) receives the Old Scholars'
Newsletter I always read it with much interest
but unfortunately my contact ceases there. I
decided now it is time I did something about
my involvement. Unfortunately I missed our
reunion of the 1969 graduates as I was
interstate so I do hope perhaps in 2019 we
could catch up again.
I trained as a teacher of Early Childhood
Education with Sally Lee and taught both
kindergarten and junior primary for 11 years
in North Adelaide, West Lakes, Lincoln South
and St Andrews, Walkerville. While I was on
maternity leave in Port Lincoln I began
teaching Communication in Business Studies
in TAFE. and this ultimately led to becoming
Lecturer/ Coordinator of Adult
Literacy/Numeracy. I also tutored at the Pt
Lincoln enclave of Uni SA Aboriginal
students of Early Childhood Education. While
in Pt Lincoln I frequently saw Helen Dalby.
On my return to Adelaide I found it necessary
to retire for health reasons. I am blessed with
a lovely daughter, Anna, and two grand
daughters. I live at Walkerville and have
'grand' ambitions of starting a new service for
those people who are housebound.
Best wishes to all past staff and old scholars.

Angela Heuzenroeder (Eckermann’61)
writes that she is part of a heritage advisory
group writing for an application to have the
Adelaide Hills, Barossa district and McLaren
Vale accepted as a world heritage agricultural
area. Angela has written several books on
the food and gardens of the Barossa Valley
area.
