Our parish theme and calling in
God’s Word To Us
Reflection on Lectionary Readings 7th Sunday in Ordinary Time, February 23, 2020
You have heard that it was said...
MATTHEW’s Gospel today gives us a list of rules to follow, but Jesus says he does not destroy rules. He reinterprets them so they are applied to all, both “the Bad and the Good.” In LEVITICUS we are told to love each other as God loves; to hold no grudge, no hatred. PAUL reminds us we all are the Church (the Temple) so we must love each other because God dwells in us all. We are to be a fool for God (i.e., foolish to the ways of this world and more a model of Christ).
MATTHEW says, reconcile with others; and PAUL states the Spirit dwells in us all, bringing us all closer to God. BE PERFECT means “BE HOLY” modelling after God, the Father. Don’t be a door mat, but an open door so all others are welcomed to God. Be non-transactional, because God does not ask for some ‘price’ to be paid for his love.
Nevertheless, when there are threats to people in our world by enemies as horrific as terrorists, its hard today to love that enemy. Consider, a more local “enemy” ~ the robo-call. Almost 30% of phone calls today are automated intruders. Seems when we are waiting for an important call, along comes a series of robo-callers. Caller ID helps show who they are, but they are annoying intruders to our life.
Christ tells us, go further than hate – “fight” with non-violence. Just, hang up!
Deacon Joe Ferrari
On Saturday, February 29, the Pro-Life ministry at St. Thomas the Apostle is hosting a pizza and movie night in the Lighthouse at 5:30 p.m. (directly after the 4:30 mass). We will be watching and discussing the movie “Unplanned” which describes the life of Abby Johnson, her work at Planned Parenthood, and her later pro-life revelations. Abby Johnson becomes the youngest clinic director in the history of Planned Parenthood, then a life-changing experience turned her into an anti-abortion activist.
There is no charge for the evening. If you would like to attend, please call or email the OSJ Office so we know how much pizza to order. Contact Anne (630.355.8980 x113, [email protected]).
Note: The Motion Picture Association of America has given the film an R rating based on some disturbing images. The producers of the film did not appeal the rating because that would mean delaying the movie's release for some time.

The Men’s Club is preparing for its annual April In Parish Service Project and we need your help in identifying a family, a couple, or an individual, within the Parish, who needs clean-up or fix-up help with their home. This activity is scheduled for the Saturdays in April. Projects are typically sized such that they can be accomplished by a team of men in one full day. Again, if you need assistance or know of anyone who needs assistance, please contact:

Would you like to be interviewed as part of the work of the parish Leadership Community to “read the signs of the times” in order to better understand the world our parishioners inhabit? Members of the Leadership Community will be available after all Masses on the
weekend of March 7/8 to interview any parishioners who would like to participate. Each interview may take up to 30 minutes to complete.
These are the questions that will be asked during these interviews:
• As you look into the near future, what are some of your greatest concerns for yourself and your family? … for our Naperville/Lisle Community? … for our nation? … for our world?
• Where do you see signs of hope for yourself and your family? … for our Naperville/Lisle Community? … for our nation? … for our world?
• Where do you see God at work in our community, our nation and our world? If you would prefer to respond to these questions on-line go to our website: www.smmp.com “The Church has always had the duty of scrutinizing the signs of the times and of interpreting them in the light of the Gospel. … We must therefore recognize and understand the world in which we live, its explanations, its longings, and its often dramatic characteristics.” – The Pastoral Cons tu on of the Church

Cub Scout Pack 507 and BSA Scout Troop 507 would like to extend a big, “Thank You”, to Martha Rose for her long-time dedication and efforts to St Margaret Mary’s Scouting organizations. Martha has been involved since St Margaret Mary’s Pack and Troop began in the late 1980’s. This includes being a Den Parent, District Commissioner, a District Member-At-Large and, most recently, St Margaret Mary’s liaison to our Scouts (COR). These roles are what is “on record” – there were most likely many more official and unofficial roles that Martha held over the years.
Although Martha doesn’t take any credit for the programs’ success of over 30 years, as she steps away from leadership involvement with our Scouts and Scout families, we believe she deserves recognition by expressing our sincere gratitude and respect for her selfless service to Scouting.
THANK YOU, MARTHA!

Triduum (Three Days)
Come and join us at the peak celebrations of the Catholic Church’s liturgical year. Each liturgy is unique and yet they fit together as a single, extended celebration of the Paschal Mystery of Christ
Holy Thursday, April 9 at 7 PM
Embrace this great symbol of service; have your feet washed and wash another’s We celebrate Jesus giving us the Eucharist as a continuing source of support and strength, and the call to service, as we hear John’s gospel of Jesus washing the feet of the disciples. All are invited to enter into this action by having their feet washed and washing the feet of another at one of our 6 foot washing stations. At
the conclusion, the Eucharist is processed through the Church and placed in the Blessed Sacrament Chapel for adoration until midnight. The service ends in silence, as we enter this sacred time.
Good Friday Afternoon, April 10 at 3 PM Encounter Jesus as he gives everything to show God’s kingdom is alive We begin in silence as we enter into the Lord’s Passion and Death, reverencing the altar. The readings bring us to the great love Jesus showed us, as he lived, faithful to God, even unto death. The large cross, which is before us at every gathering in our Church, is processed forward and all are invited to venerate it. The Eucharist,
consecrated Holy Thursday evening, is then distributed, and we once again leave in silence, for this is only the second of our three day celebration.
Good Friday Evening, April 10 at 7 PM
Embrace Jesus on the Cross of Love Our evening service includes Scripture, prayer and the veneration of the Cross. We again begin and end in silence, remembering all that Jesus has done to gain us salvation.
Easter Vigil, April 11 at 8 PM
Embrace God’s kingdom of new life and eternal hope We gather in darkness as we await the light of God’s love coming back into the world through the resurrection of Jesus. We begin outside, lighting and blessing the new fire, lighting and processing with the new Paschal Candle, pass the new light to all and sing our praises to the candle and it’s light, the great symbol of Christ’s presence in
our midst. We then vigil, listen to our salvation history, from creation to the resurrection of Jesus. Our baptismal water is blessed and new members are baptized, and we all renew our baptismal promises. Those joining our Church who have already been baptized make their profession of faith in the Catholic Church and then the new members are Confirmed. We then share the joy of God’s power and love as we participate in the Eucharistic meal.

MARCH FOR LIFE, WASHINGTON, D.C. “Your strength, devotion and drive is what powers our nation, and because of you our county has been blessed with amazing souls who have changed the course of human history. We cannot know what our citizens yet unborn will achieve, the dreams they will imagine, the masterpieces they will create, the
discoveries they will make. But we know this: Every life brings love into this world. Every child brings joy to a family. Every person is worth protecting. An above all, we know that every human soul is divine and every human life—born and unborn—is made in the holy image of Almighty God.” President Donald Trump, 47th March for Life, January 24, 2020
Fr. Paul’s Homily
Divisions 2 Sm 5:1-7, 10; Mk 3:22-30
(When we humble ourselves then we can serve the whole, and then we can give witness to the whole.)
13
“And if a house is divided against itself, that house will not be able to stand.”
In principle Jesus is saying this about the power of Satan, but in principle it’s true about everything. Abraham Lincoln used it to explain why the United States could not be divided into Union and Confederacy. But it’s also true of our Church, the people of God. Because we are divided, because we are not really unified, all those who profess the name of Christ, we give very poor witness to the world; and to some degree the world laughs at us and thereby laughs at Christ. And what is the reason? Our divisions.
Now what is the basis of our divisions? It is our minds, first and foremost. We think too much of them. We imagine we have clarity when we do not. We imagine we know when we only have a little bit of knowledge. St. Paul says, “We walk by faith not by sight,” but we think faith has given us
sight. It doesn’t. Faith is faith, not sight, not certainty. Faith is trust. If you trust, you don’t need certainty. Certainty is self-centered; trust is other-centered. God is eliciting trust, not certainty. He does not impose certainty or offer certainty because then we would be self-sufficient. That’s not God’s will for us.
And so the history of theology is full of false opposites. Of course I hate to say it, but one of the most notorious was Martin Luther with all his false opposites: faith and works, as if God doesn’t want both; grace versus nature, as if God didn’t create both; Christ and the saints, as if it isn’t God’s will for both to be interceding for the whole; and on and on. This is the way the human mind works, sad to say. And it isn’t just the Lutherans. Catholics have been just as guilty of picking one little thing and making it everything, exaggerating their own intelligence to belittle someone else’s
or simply to make themselves bigger in their own mind than they really are. God doesn’t want us to be big in our own minds.
God wants us to be truthful, which is what humility is. We are dignified because we come from God. We have been assigned a stupendous goal, destiny in Christ to be part of the body of Christ, to be a member, a living member of the body of Christ, to actually enjoy the mind of Christ. St. Paul said that, and that you can take literally: “Put on the mind of Christ.” Yes, that’s the goal. But we don’t get there by exalting ourselves. We get there by humbling ourselves. And when we humble ourselves then we can serve the whole, and then we can give witness to the whole. And in our humility and in our witness we really serve the whole. And that is the will of God for the Church and the role of the Church in the world, but we have a tendency not to do that.
Peer Ministry
Peer Ministry has been a foundation for youth in our parish for decades. Mostly made up of juniors and seniors, they minister to each other and youth throughout the community. One of their primary responsibilities is to prepare and lead the 9th and 10th
grade retreats. They explore the theologies of the retreat themes together, practice facilitating small group discussions, prepare witness talks and get all the details together. We meet every Monday night throughout the school year and lead at least two retreats each year. Last year, they were excited to offer a retreat for our Junior High youth also! We encourage them to use what they have learned here in the wider community with their peers. They would love your continued prayers of support!
