Junie Juliet at Oasis 96.3 anniversary party Sunday

~ Taking ‘Trip Down Memory Lane’ at Red Piano ~ Oasis 96.3 will take a “Trip Down Memory Lane’ at Red Piano this Sunday in celebration of its 13th anniversary.

The Philipsburg Broadcasting crew has teamed up with the St. Maarten Red Cross to host an anniversary party at Red Piano. Party time is 7:00pm.

Talented Curaçao showman and piano player Juni Juliet will en-tertain patrons. Proceeds will go towards the Red Cross.

Broadcaster Phyllis Meit, who has been with Oasis since the station started in 1997, said patrons can expect to have a great time.

Oasis occasionally organises events to mark its anniversary, but the team hasn’t thrown one in a while and felt the time was ripe to hold one.

The fi rst party “Solid Gold” was in 1999 and the last – a karaoke, wine and cheese party – in 2007 was a big hit with patrons having a blast. Sunday’s party promises to be an even bigger treat.

Guests will be treated to memora-ble music from yesteryear, which mirrors Oasis’ fl avour. Juliet’s repertoire takes you back to the 60s, 70s and 80s and ranges from blues to jazz and includes laid back sounds to high energy party music.

“It will be an amazing party since he is a fantastic entertainer. He will get everyone on their feet dancing and he’s an amazing pi-ano player. Don’t miss this,” she

tells patrons.

Red Cross was selected as char-ity because of its active role in as-sisting persons after disasters.

Phyllis said her 13 years at Philipsburg Broadcasting had been memorable. “It has been a very rewarding and creative expe-rience. I enjoyed hosting my own show and I enjoy every minute of it,” Phyllis said, plugging her pro-gramme “Oasis Oldies” which airs from 10:00am to 1:00pm Monday to Fridays on Oasis. “It has been a lot of fun and I hope to continue to do it for many more years.”

Philipsburg broadcasting has four stations under its fold: Laser 101 the fi rst and main station which started in 1993; Oasis in 1997; Tropixx 105.5 and Mix 94.7.

Being part of the Philipsburg Broadcasting Storm Watch team is among her most memorable experiences. The four stations simulcast during storms and the Storm Watch team keeps the com-munity up to date with relevant information as a service to the community.

Tickets for the “Trip Down Memory Lane” party cost US $25 in ad-vance and $30 at the gate and are available from St. Maarten Red Cross members and at both Van Dorp locations. Phyllis thanks sponsors Red Piano, Bon Appétit, Pelican Resort, Chippie, Pineapple Pete, Thrifty Car Rental, Insel Air and Ketel 1 Vodka.

“Golden Gal” surely de-scribes Lena Browne to a tee. Lena, with her lovely voice, is going to wow us all by putting on an event at Club 1 Eleven in Simp-son Bay on Saturday, No-vember 27. e show is set to start at 9:00pm and promises good entertain-ment with La’Rich show-ing her Live Art, Poetry readings and of course amazing singing from Lena Browne backed by the terrifi c group Mosaic.

Born on St. Maarten into a very musical family, Lena attended the Method-ist Agogic Centre and St. Maarten Academy. After high school, she followed through with her educa-tion at FAMU in Tallahas-see where she majored in classical music with opera being her number one love.

When she returned to St. Maarten three years later, she started doing gigs around the island. Notic-ing that a lot of St. Maarten women seem to have little self-esteem, she decided to start singing Calypso with lyrics that would give all women a boost. Lena entered the 2009 Carnival Calypso competition with a collaborated song “Crea-tures of Value” which be-came an instant hit. Her CD is available for sale, but around Easter next year she will launch an album which will include this song as well.

e plight of women on the islands has encour-aged Lena not just to sing lyrics to build confi dence,

Lena Brown ‘Golden Gal’but also to form a sup-port group called “Save Our Sisters Club” that she hopes will have branches in the schools to help en-courage young girls, as well as adult groups, who need their support.

As an opera singer her-self, Lena plans to escort groups of musical students to some of the wonder-ful shows brought here by classical artistes. She believes the youth of St. Maarten need to expand their outlook in the musi-cal fi eld and get to know more diversity in musical styles.

As with previous years, Christmas carolling this year will be done at vari-ous venues around St. Maarten. On December 20, 21, 22 and 23, the “St. Maarten Carolers” will head out to bring Christ-mas Cheer to one and all. Contact Lena for details of how to join this group.

On Saturday night at Club 1 Eleven, Lena will per-form with the wonderful band Mosaic backing her. is promises to be a fan-tastic evening. Proceeds will go to Ring of Voices Foundation and Imbali. Mark the date in your cal-endars and head on out to Club 1 Eleven.

Club 1 Eleven is situated on e Strip, Simpson Bay. e show will start at 9:00pm. Tickets are US $20 in advance and $25 at the gate and can be obtained by calling 524-7090 or 554-9364.

Cutie Johnson & The Next Level Band @ Club 1Eleven

Tonight is set to be another amazing Thursday night with performances by Cutie Johnson and The Next Level Band. This great combination of musical talents will be providing an unforgettable night of various genres of music you will be sure to enjoy!

Cutie Johnson is best known for being part of the amazing singing duo, Jumelle, formerly known as The Johnson Sisters, with her twin sister Lynn. Her main style of music is gospel, but she also loves jazz and soul. She and Lynn have been wowing crowds with their beautiful voices since they were 11 years old.

Cutie started performing on her own at Captain Oliver’s when she was 14. Her sister Lynn would join her onstage for the Christmas performances. Cutie says, “I was very shy, my sister Lynn did all the talking back then. Working for Captain Oliver’s forced me to come out of my shell, it was great practice and shaped me as a performer. That was the beginning of singing at most of the hotels on the island!”

Cutie met The Next Level Band in 2004 when band leader/drummer

approached her to be their lead singer. “I loved the way they played; they are very diverse. They were hired twice to play for Heineken Regatta, for which they asked me to join them. I learned to sing more genres with The Next Level Band and we got to travel to places like St. Barth and Guadeloupe for many functions together. Years back we were

well-known for playing every weekend on the Boardwalk.”

With her diverse singing style, Cutie performs with many bands on the island. She is not only a singer, but also promotes her group and other musicians as well. She has two CDs out, the latest of which, “C of Love” Part 2, will be on sale tonight at Club 1 Eleven.

Expect to hear soul/jazz/pop/gospel and more, as The Next Level Band plays just about everything! Cutie says, “Even though I don’t sing at night-clubs, I love singing at Club 1 Eleven because it’s safe, it’s classy and a

place where people can enjoy great live music of different genres.”

Cutie Johnson and The Next Level Band will be your entertainment while you party the night away this Thursday @ Club 1 Eleven! Doors open at 9:00pm with Happy Hour until 11:00pm. Club 1 Eleven is featuring live bands every Thursday night with continuous shows by bands of different music genres such as rock, jazz, R&B, reggae, pop and more! Island 92 Radio announces its 2011 free concert series

Island 92 FM Radio, St. Maarten’s home of Rock, Blues and Good Time mu-sic, announced its 2011 FREE concert series, which begins on New Year’s Eve, with several old favourites at a brand new concert ven-ue.

The Little River Band, Am-brosia and Bertie Higgins will all grace the Island 92 con-cert stage at Pelican Resort on New Year’s Eve, Decem-ber 31. Then again on Sun-day, April 24, 2011, the FREE concert series continues with the Atlanta Rhythm Section and John Ford Coley at one of our other favourite loca-tions, Mary’s Boon Beach Resort.

Soc of Island 92 said, “We are pleased to continue our tra-dition of hosting great con-certs on St. Maarten. This year’s concert series com-bines some of our favou-rite artists along with two great beach locations, the Pelican Resort and Mary’s Boon Beach Resort. The en-tire line-up of artists for this year’s concert series has sold more than 50 million albums worldwide. Both shows are not to be missed!”

Soc continued: “Both shows would not be possible with-out the support of our con-cert sponsors: Coors Light, UTS, Mary’s Boon Beach Resort, The Pelican Resort

Club, U-SAVE Car Rental, Century 21 Island Realty, The 3 Palms Restaurant and Lounge, Krazy Kat’s On the Rocks Beach Bar and those of us here at Island 92. To each of our sponsors, on behalf of the Island 92 Team, I simply say, ‘Thank you!’”

Richard Corso of the Peli-can Resort club said, “We are thrilled at the Pelican Marina Residences and the Pelican Resort Club, to be able to offer a first class New Year’s Eve beach concert to our owners and guests. This is certainly going to be an ex-citing evening!”

Raul Max Brown of Mary’s Boon Beach Resort went on to say, “This will be the fourth year that Mary’s Boon has participated in the Island 92 concert series and each con-cert has been a great time. The show for Easter Sunday is guaranteed to be a blast.”

The Little River BandThe Little River Band was the first Australian band that successfully conquered the world music charts from its base in Australia.

AmbrosiaThe buzz surrounding Am-brosia isn’t surprising given the heights the band scaled during the 70s and early 80s. The band has earned five Grammy nominations, con-tinuous radio airplay, and

multi-platinum status.

Bertie HigginsLike his great, great grand-father Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, the German poet who penned “Faust,” Bertie Higgins is a storyteller. Ber-tie is an intellectual roman-tic who loves to paint story songs about living and loving in a tropical paradise.

Look in the next Out and About for more news about participating bands.

When Katsiaryna Özkan takes the stage as a del-egate in the Mrs. World Pageant in 2011, she will be hoping for one major accomplishment: becom-ing an inspiration to other women and mothers. The long-time St. Maarten resident and mother of four will represent her native Belarus, but says she will be an ambassador of the Caribbean with inspiration from her beloved adopted home St. Maarten. While it would be nice to win, it is not the main goal for the 30-year-old. She sees the pageant as an opportunity to show women from all over the world the attrac-tiveness and great value of inner beauty. “I am not going there to show off myself or try to fi ght for victory, but to show people that inner beauty is more important and to be an inspiration to women who don’t believe in themselves,” she says. “We have to care more about inner beauty because it’s forever. When a wom-an is happy inside, she’s beautiful outside. Every woman is beautiful in her own way, but some can’t show it properly.” The pageant was origi-nally scheduled to be held in Korea last October but, due to security threats, has been postponed to a still-to-be-determined-date and venue next year. Katsiaryna’s ensembles for the night of glitz and glamour are already intact. Her national costume will depict a rare blue fl ower that grows only in Belarus and she will accessorise with fl owers in her hair. Her platform is an issue that has always been close to her heart: Children. A love which inspired her participation in Childfest, the biggest fundraiser for children in St. Maarten and an event which allows young people to promote their talents and have a day

of fun and excitement. Beauty from within Kathy, as she is affectionately called, grew up in a Belarus home in which her devoted parents – her physicist father and project engineer mom – accorded education top priority. From a young age, she made her mark academi-cally and was well on her way to achieving her childhood dream to become an attorney.

Like many young girls going through puberty, she ques-tioned her looks. She never felt beautiful and had a close brush with death as a teen bat-tling anorexia. “I used to hate myself when I was young,” she said. “Because I had blue eyes and white hair, I felt like a ghost when I walking down the street.” As she matured into adult-hood, she overcame her chal-lenges and now has a greater appreciation for inner beauty, hence her burning desire to in-spire others. “Outer beauty is like a suitcase that you carry all your life. If you drop it, you still have your inner you. Every day as you get older, the suitcase gets heavier so for me outer beauty is not im-portant. “Everyone is beautiful when young and every day it gets harder to stay beautiful. No matter who you are or what your outer beauty is, it can change by circumstances such as sickness. But inner beauty will never change,”

Katsiaryna Özkanthe wife of Princess Group of Companies President Sudi Özkan says. Just before she was to pursue studies to become an attorney, she met Sudi during a trip to Turkey. The two fell head over heels in love and eventu-ally tied the knot. Katsiaryna, Sudi and their kids lived in Turkey before coming to St. Maarten on vacation in 2000. She imme-diately fell in love with the beauty and serenity of the island and decided to settle here. They built their home “Princess Chateau” in Pelican

and have been residing there ever since. These days Kathy is en-grossed in the business of raising her children Princess Katherina, Sudi Han, Royal and King. She is also actively involved in the running of her new spa and fi tness centre Princess Country Club at Port de Plaisance and spends much of her spare time engaged in her favourite pastime: pho-tography. Her passion is kids and, together with her hus-band, she invests heavily in the annual Childfest fund-raiser.

By chance Katsiaryna fi lled in the Mrs. World entry form “for fun” while vacationing in Turkey last August. She had since forgotten about it and was surprised when she received an email from the Belarus franchise holder requesting her pictures. She sent her pho-tos and received a positive feedback from the coordina-tors who said they had been impressed. She almost changed her mind about the pageant due to de-mands at home in St. Maarten coupled with her busy sched-ule with her kids. However, her husband Sudi and her grandmother, in particular, encouraged her to go ahead and enter. So Katsiaryna de-cided to enter the pageant as an opportunity to fulfi l her goal to inspire. “It’s better to regret things you have done than what you haven’t,” she says. In the run up to the pageant, she is maintaining her active lifestyle and her regular fi t-ness routine which includes exercise and swimming. She doesn’t plan to do anything out of the ordinary in prepara-tion for the pageant. Katsiaryna, who has never been under the knife, likes the

natural look. Because of her hectic schedule, she does a lot of her shopping online. She likes durable clothing and wears a lot of Valentino designs, but doesn’t mind wearing inexpensive ensembles. She doesn’t follow fash-ion trends and prefers to “be myself” in express-ing her sense of style. She says bags are not a big deal for her, but shoes are. She’s never coloured her hair and doesn’t smoke. And for those of you wondering, yes, the mole on her face is real. An animal lover, Kathy, who would welcome blessings of a fi fth addi-tion to her family, raises over 30 animals includ-ing dogs, cats, rabbits, parrots and pigeons, at her home.

If she wins the pag-eant, the multilingual Katsiaryna, who speaks English, Turkish and Russian fl uently, will donate whatever funds she receives to a worthy cause. She will also play her role as a role model for mothers, if this is re-quired.

Andrew Dick is one of St. Maarten’s established come-dians and has made a name for himself with his funny antics over the years. After focusing on organizing for the past two years, he has now decided to start back with his television program “Late Night with Andrew Dick.” Find out more about his latest project!

What made you want to go back and do TV?Seeing funny things around me all the time; also I don’t get why people just don’t talk about things that are going on in St. Maarten. Lucky enough for my show, I get to express that, knowing that it works. I’ll have people stop me on the road and say, “Hey, I can’t believe you said that; but don’t worry, I agree with you.” en I say to myself, “YES, mis-sion accomplished!”

What can we look forward to?Craziness, if that is even a word, one thing people can re-member about the show is that when we do the show, we do it for fun; no hidden agenda, just for fun and for en-tertaining the public, because that is what it is all about. Sketches and interviews with infl uential persons, however, is not your simple, standard interview, but a diff erent side of the guest you will get on the show.

Describe the show in your own words?Dickfabulousness, you said my word.

Who is your favourite person or persons to make fun of?Well, to tell you the truth, the hardest person to imitate is

Andrew DickLate Night with

Minister Frankie Meyers, but after lots of practice, I fi nally got him down. But if I have to say my favourite outright, it’s Louie Laveist; I had that impression down since I was 18. Another one of my best impressions is police spokesman, Ricardo Henson.

What else can we expect from you on TV?Well, I got some specials lined up. I am doing a New Year’s special and it will be funny, I promise you that! Also next year, I wanted to get a live audience for my taping sessions; that is a work in prog-ress, but I will be making major changes to the show for 2011, so look out!

How do fi nd time to do your TV show since you are a full time re-porter and organizer? at’s like ask-ing me how do you fi nd time to sleep… you always fi nd ways to do w h a t y o u

love. I would tell anybody “reach for the stars and make sure you take one and make it yours.” I don’t know. I watched OPRAH last night; I felt “inspirational” even though that sentence doesn’t make sense.

Will you have ‘legal issues’ in your show?Yes, in fact I will. I will be doing a sketch on the Brooks

Tower Accord and my favourite Minister Duncan. Oh, you mean personal legal issues! Well, I will

say only this: “Sooner than you think, I will ad-dress all of it in one of my shows.”

Late Night with Andrew Dick starts this Monday on WTN cable channel 10 at 9:30pm and on islandtime.com ; more-bacchanal.com and avsnewsonline.com starting this Saturday, November 27, and to be updated every Saturday on the in-

ternet. Time for Cable TV and French side cable to be announced later.

e idea of an international show being held on St. Maarten was born in Paris where founder of the Miss Caraibes Hibiscus, St. Maartener Patrick Eugene, was studying for his “Business Commerce” diploma. He wanted to start some-thing at an international level that would put St. Maarten on the map. During this time, he moved in the beauty pageant world and, meet-ing beautiful people in these circles, the idea of holding a beauty pageant appealed to him. He believed the idea would evolve into something special, but had no idea it would work so well. Now, some 20 years down the line, not only is the show still popular, it has also become the num-ber one beauty contest in the Caribbean.

Years ago in the initial stages of realising his vi-sion, there was no internet so he had to fl y from island to island to meet with various beauty pag-eant organizations. In the process, he met Puerto Rico’s Anna Santisteben and Trinidad’s organizer of beauty pageants, Kim Sabeney, responsible for Miss Trinidad and Tobago pageant, with contes-tants moving on to win Miss World and Miss Uni-verse. Sabeney opened doors to Miss Universe and other beauty pageant organizations to Eugene, and although on more than one occasion he was very concerned he would not be able to fulfi l his dream due to a lack of funds, he persevered. In those ear-ly days, everything came out of his pocket but he felt his vision was worth the eff ort, especially with people like Santisteben and Sabeney believing in him and supporting him so much.

Held in 1990, his fi rst show at the Alberic Richards Stadium in Sandy Ground had just seven contes-tants to whom he assigned one chaperone. Pull-ing this show together is a huge undertaking that grows with each successive year. Now 20 years later, with 24 Caribbean and South American countries sending representatives to compete in the Miss Caraibes Hibiscus Beauty Pageant 2010, Eugene has eight chaperones in place for the con-testants, as it’s a huge undertaking to work the lo-gistics of safety to the girls and their entourage.

e schedule for the contestants includes intro-ducing the island to the girls and the girls in the island. eir visits to important places of interest, mainly for photo shoots but also to allow time for interaction and fun, start on November 25. Past contestants have enjoyed these visits so much, they have returned to St. Maarten/St. Martin for much needed R & R.

Eugene has worked extremely hard over the last 20 years to realise his dream of off ering a show on an international level, which has defi nitely put St. Maarten on the map in the modelling world and as far as beauty pageants go.

e fi nale will take place on December 4 at the Maho Convention Centre at Sonesta Maho Beach Resort. Tickets are US $30 in advance and $35 at the door and may be purchased Dutch side: at Van Dorp in Madame Estate and Simpson Bay; French side: at L’Orangerie, Change Express, St. Martin Week, La maison De La Presse.

La Villa DinnerBy Lucinda Frye

Ambrosia is the word I think of when I think back on dinner last weekend, when a dear friend and I decided to head to Grande Case for a meal. Having parked in the public parking lot at the “top of town,” we set off eagerly on a brisk walk to fi nd a “new-to-us” restaurant to enjoy. Our walk down the lovely main street brought us to La Vil-la restaurant. Having read the menu outside, we noted the dollar-euro was one for one and that there was a “fi x prix” menu of 49 euros. Stepping across the threshold, we were immediately met by a very friendly person who turned out to be Christophe. He saw us to a table on one side of the large seating area and quickly brought us menus, wine list and fl at water.

e ambiance was a very friendly one and look-ing around us we noticed that they were fairly full already, so with a happy buzz going on in a stress-free environment, we studied the menu, decided on our orders and settled in to observe our sur-roundings.

Although most tables were taken, the feeling was not one of being over-crowded, as the fl oor area is quite large. e name describes it as the villa, but it is more the veranda of a villa with shutters open and a few plants growing along the roadside and pots with candles glowing in them. e tables, with red table clothes over white and white match-ing napkins, were sparsely set with glasses and fl at-wear and one round ball in a square glass vase. is ball was in place of a candle and changed colour throughout the meal. e table could have done with a fresh fl ower sprig but as our table was quite small and we found out that the plates were huge, there would not have been enough room for this little vase.

e water and bread basket were brought to the table. We found the bread to be a bit tough and not crispy or warm but the oil and balsamic that came with it was of excellent quality. en sweet and gentle Florence arrived to take our wine order, she made a suggestion but my dinner companion opted for her favourite wine on the menu. We or-dered a classy Sancerre Les Baronnes 2008 from Henri Bourgeois. e menu said “very stylish Rose with dried cherry mineral notes that stay pure and refi ned on the fi nish” and that is what we had. Very stylish and a superb choice, I just love reading the

descriptive notes on the wine menus.

Christophe came to take our orders. Effi cient and business-like, he disappeared towards the kitchen and very soon our starters arrived. e “OMG” look at the presentation was to be repeated three times this evening. My dinner companion had ordered; “Warm Goat Cheese Salad with honey, pine nuts and Balsamic dressing.” e overly large plate arrived with a fl at three point crown of sesame seeds in black and white decorating a simple array of three grilled cheese ba-guette slices and a large mesclin green salad. e simplicity belied the fl avour which was so delicious and fresh and very quickly devoured by my friend who barely wanted to spare a taste. I thought it delicious too, however, we both agreed that the dish placed before me was the winner.

Warm seared foie gras is my one and only repeat order. At every opportunity, I will order it and so I feel I am a bit of a connoisseur. I cannot help but adore the soft sweetness of just cooked goose liver. Again the presentation was superb. On the large plate, I had two long dashes of a decoration in black and white pepper (I love fresh pepper). A smaller fresh green salad topped with dried beetroot with a slight chilli aftertaste adorned one corner of the plate with a small bowl of warm apple chutney and cherry vinegar garnish-ing. I was in seventh heaven eating two large pieces of the best foie gras I have had in a long time. My dinner compan-ion was as enamoured with the fl avours as I was that she too vowed to order the foie gras next time she eats there.

Our next courses took a tad longer to be placed before us. Both Christophe and Florence passed by to apologize for the delay on a couple of occasions; we did not even notice the length of time as we were deep in conversation that en-gulfed much laughter. Our beautifully plated main courses arrived on huge square plates and were placed before us with ooooh’s and aaaah’s. My dinner companion had ordered duck breast, caramel-ized pear, mashed broccoli timbale with a dried plantain chip garnish and mild spices sauce. e breast was thinly sliced, tender and large. e sides were light and each of the sides had a fresh and unique fl avour. I watched my dinner companion take the fi rst mouthful; her eyes closed and the look of complete satisfaction showed me she had ordered a sublime dish.

My order of rack of lamb with a goat cheese crust, zucchini cake, local mashed pumpkin mousse with soya bean gar-nish and a honey, rosemary sauce was sublime. e lamb was tender and the sauce plate-licking good. e sides dis-appeared in a fl ash. I am not a veggie sort of person but

these sides were very “moreish.” I would dearly like the recipe for the local mashed pumpkin mousse, light, fl uff y and very fl avoursome. We were a little embarrassed to have our plates cleared away looking as if they had been licked clean.

When dessert was off ered, we asked them to come back in a few and then considered if we really want-ed anything more to eat. Not just that we were full, but a dessert would fade the memories of the fl a-vours into the background. Yup, we ordered dessert, silly to think we would not.

My dinner companion was told her order would take about ten minutes as she had asked for a warm chocolate, soft centred pudding with vanilla ice cream. I ordered the special almond fl avoured pan-na cotta with raspberry sorbet. e desserts arrived with a crown motif on my companion’s plate and a long streak motif on mine.

We nibbled on her dessert fi rst and carried on con-versing. I was not ready to eat mine yet and twice we were asked by concerned wait staff if my dessert was okay. Not only was it okay but was devoured in a blink of an eye. Both desserts were divine, although I believe the panna cotta won hands down.

We were off ered the obligatory shot of banana or vanilla rum at the end of the meal. We both turned

this down. I was driv-ing and with the strict rule on the French side re drinking, I thought to be a little conservative. How-ever, Florence ap-peared and poured us each a glass, saying it was her special home-made brew so “down the hatch” it went. A smooth and delightful shot that warmed us inside and prepared us for the walk back to our car in the drizzle, worth having a second or even a third, but we didn’t!
