St. Paul’s Letter To The Romans (10: 1-10)

Brethren, my heart’s desire and my supplication to

God is for Israel, that they may be saved. For I

bear them witness that they have a zeal for God,

but not according to knowledge. For being

ignorant of God’s righteousness, and seeking to

establish their own righteousness, they did not

submit to the righteousness of God . For Christ is

the fulfillment of the Law for righteousness to

everyone who believes. For Moses describes the

righteousness that is from the Law, that “the one

who does those things shall live by them.” But of

the righteousness that is from faith he says thus:

“Do not say in your heart, ‘Who shall ascend into

Heaven?’ (That is, to bring Christ down) or, ‘Who

shall descend into the abyss?’ (That is, to bring

Christ up from the dead).” But what does it say?

“The word is near you, in your mouth, and in your

heart,” that is, the word of faith which we preach;

because if you confess with your mouth the Lord

Jesus and believe in your heart that God raised Him

from the dead, you will be saved. For with the

heart there is the belief to righteousness, and with

the mouth, the confession to salvation.

The Holy Gospel Of St. Matthew (8:28-9:1)

At that time, when Jesus came to the country of the

Gergesenes, two demoniacs met him, coming out of

the tombs, so fierce that no one could pass that way.

And behold, they cried out, “What have you to do

with us, O Son of God? Have you come here to

torment us before the time?” Now a herd of many

swine was feeding at some distance from them. And

the demons begged him, “If you cast us out, send us

away into the herd of swine.” And he said to them,

“Go.” So they came out and went into the swine;

and behold, the whole herd rushed down the steep

bank into the sea, and perished in the waters. The

herdsmen fled, and going into the city they told

everything, and what had happened to

the demoniacs. And

behold, all the city

came out to meet

Jesus; and when they

saw him, they

begged him to leave

their neighborhood.

And getting into a

boat he crossed over

and came to his own

city.

July 8, 2012: Today we celebrate the Fifth Sunday after Holy Pentecost. The Saints commemorated today: Holy Great-martyr Procopios of Caesarea in

Palestine; New-martyrs Theophanes and Anastasios of Constantinople; Venerable

Theophilos the myrrh-streaming of St. Basil Kelli on Athos; Procopios of Ustug, fool-for-

Christ; Martyr Mirdat the King, of Kartli, Georgia; Blessed King Edgar the Peaceable, of

England; Virgin Sunniva and companions, on Selje Island (Norway); Hieromartyr

Killian, Irish missionary bishop to the Franks; Grimbald, abbot of Winchester.

Only Orthodox Christians who are prepared may approach the Holy Chalice: Please remember to have respect

as we process forward to receive Holy Communion. This is a solemn time for humility, prayer and silence. Simi-

larly, after receiving Holy Communion, proceed back to your place in church quietly and begin saying the “Prayers

of Thanksgiving.” It is proper to remain standing in prayer while the rest of the faithful receive Holy Communion.

We shouldn’t be sitting at this time, unless it is absolutely necessary. This is NOT the time for greetings and so-

cialization. With great reverence, we quietly draw near to the Holy Chalice with our arms crossed over our chest.

As you step up on the solea to receive, say your name, then open your mouth wide to receive the Holy Gifts.

Please do NOT make the sign of the cross immediately after having received Holy Communion, as there is a great

danger that you will hit the bottom of the Chalice and thus cause a spill. Having received Holy Communion, care-

fully step back away from the Chalice (being careful not to touch it) and then down from the solea to make the sign

of the Cross and receive a piece of Antidoron (blessed bread).

please call the Church office. We will be

glad to help you locate an Orthodox Church to visit

while you are out of town.

Regarding Holy Communion: Since we understand Holy Communion to manifest and to mean that we have a

“common-union” with God and with one another, that we share the same Christian Faith; only those baptized and/or

chrismated in the Orthodox Church, who profess the Faith in their beliefs and thus in the actions of their daily life,

who prepare themselves by arriving at church on time, saying the pre-Communion prayers, fasting from last mid-

night, a recent confession; and who have not excommunicated themselves from the Church for any reason (ie., di-

vorce, marriage outside the Church, sex outside of marriage, receiving Holy Communion, or any other Sacrament in a

non-Orthodox Church, etc...): you may draw near to the Holy Chalice “in the fear of God and in faith and in love”.

The Standing Conference of Canonical Orthodox Bishops in the Americas has taken the clear position that the Ortho-

dox faithful MAY NOT receive Communion outside their churches. The reverse is likewise true. Non-Orthodox

MAY NOT receive Communion in an Orthodox Church. All are welcome to venerate the Holy Cross and with deep

reverence to partake of the blessed bread at the dismissal.

Memory Eternal

Archpriest Peter E. Gillquist

July 13, 1938 – July 1, 2012

By Katherine Hyde

Fr. Peter Gillquist was a presence impossible to ignore. Physically, he was a

tall Scandinavian bear of a man who dominated any room he entered. When Fr.

Peter hugged you, you knew you’d been hugged! And spiritually, Fr. Peter’s

warmth, easy friendliness, and genuine love touched all the many people he

encountered with the grace of God. No one went away from his presence un-

cheered or unchanged.

Fr. Peter spent his entire life as an evangelist—first with Campus Crusade for Christ; then as president of

the New Covenant Apostolic Order, which became the Evangelical Orthodox Church; and from 1987 on,

as Director of the Department of Missions and Evangelism for the Antio-

chian Orthodox Archdiocese. In this capacity, he planted or fostered doz-

ens of churches, and helped to bring the “best-kept secret” of Orthodoxy

out of the closet and into the consciousness of contemporary Americans.

Fr. Peter was also a man of books—a writer, editor, and publisher. He had

an incomparable gift for telling stories that got right to the heart of his lis-

teners. Fr. Peter was involved with Conciliar Press from its beginnings in

1978, and acted as publisher from 1987 until his retirement earlier this

year. He was the author of several popular books, notably Becoming Or-

thodox—Conciliar Press’s best-selling title ever—for which he refused to

accept any royalty, in support of Conciliar’s ministry.

On a personal level, Fr. Peter was a devoted husband, father of six, grand-

father, and great-grandfather. He never allowed his busy professional life

to distance him from his family, nor did he put the welfare of his spiritual

children above that of his physical ones.

Fr. Peter with his wife,Marilyn,

on their wedding day, 1960.

Here are a few words from people who knew Fr. Peter:

“Fr. Peter was the second Orthodox clergyman that I met on my journey to the Church, and he remained

one of the most influential. His sense of humor and his ability to explain things simply was a great bless-

ing and help to many of us. Even though we only talked face to face rarely and for very short duration, I

felt like I had known Fr. Peter all my life and that we were not only fellow clergy but good friends. His

influence on those of us who have become Orthodox from the ranks of evangelical Protestantism was im-

mense.” Fr. Nicholas Sorensen

“In Father Peter Gillquist, the Lord gave the Church one of the greatest missionary saints of the ages. A

remarkable preacher, an enlightened teacher, a gifted communicator, a concise and effective writer, a true

and kind friend, an encourager of others, a devoted husband and father, a thoughtful friend, a lecturer with

a delightful touch of humor, Fr. Peter had the spiritual gifts of a Great Church Father.”

Fr. Alexander Veronis

“It was Fr. Peter who provided the initial bridge we needed to the Orthodox Church from our evangelical

backgrounds. He spoke our language and knew first hand what we were thinking. His loving embrace, his

leadership on our board, and his abiding friendship will be greatly missed.”

John Maddex, CEO, Conciliar Media Ministries

We all extend our most sincere love and prayers to Fr. Peter’s wife, Marilyn, his six children Wendy (Dn.

Tom) Braun, Greg (Jennifer) Gillquist, Ginger (Mick Kronman) Gillquist, Terri (Scott) Speier, Heidi

(Darrin) James, Fr. Peter Jon (Kristina) Gillquist, and twenty grandchildren. (His first great-grandchild,

Peter, is expected in October!) Fr. Peter is also survived by his stepmother, Marion Gillquist, four sib-

lings, a niece, and four nephews.

With the saints, give rest, O Lord, to the soul of thy departed servant, the Archpriest Peter,

where there is no pain, nor sickness, nor sorrow, but only life everlasting.

May his memory be eternal! Christ is risen! Truly He is risen!
