GOD’S HELP

Elijah was the greatest prophet of the Old Testament. He opposed and defeated the prophets of Baal at Mount Carmel. This earned him the hatred of the idolatrous queen, Jezebel, who wanted him killed. So he fled into the desert, where he lay down and asked God to take his life away. Then all his troubles would be over. Elijah was running away from something that was going to follow him. Prayer and religion are not meant to be an escape from life but are to help us to face it. God heard the prayer of Elijah and answered it, but not in the way Elijah had wanted. God sent an angel to him with food and water. And strengthened by this food “from heaven" he was able to make his way to Horeb, the mountain of God. Just as his previous condition was not produced by lack of food, so his new strength didn’t come from the food alone. It came from the assurance that God was with him. It was this assurance that breathed new life into him and gave him the heart to go on. Most likely there was nothing supernatural about the incident. It can be explained in a perfectly natural way. The “angel” who fed Elijah was probably the prophet’s own servant whom he had left a short distance away. But this doesn’t mean it wasn’t an expression of God’s care for his prophet. The normal way in which God works is through human agencies. There is a little story that illustrates this. There was a bad flood and the cellar of Thomas' house filled up with water. A man came by in a canoe and said, “Do you want a lift to safety?” “No,” said Thomas. “I have faith in God. He will save me.” The water rose and flooded the ground floor. Thomas was forced to go upstairs. A man in a motorboat came by and offered to take

him to safety, but Thomas said, “I have faith in God. He will save me.” The water rose higher still and Thomas had to take to the roof. A helicopter came by and the pilot offered to take him to safety. But once again Thomas declined, saying “I have faith in God. He will save me.” And he sat there waiting for God. But the water continued to rise and he drowned. On arriving in heaven he said angrily to God, “I had faith in you, and still you let me drown.” To which God replied, “Not once, but three times, I sent you help, and each time you refused it.” Often we don’t always recognise God’s help when it comes. Prayer is not God doing things for us, but God helping us to do things for ourselves and for one another. We will wait in vain for a heavenly angel. But God sends us human angels. All of us have experienced the ministry of such angels. And we also get opportunities to be such an angel to someone in distress. BENDIGO & DIOCESAN MATTERS

“Get up and eat, else the journey will be too long for you!” 1 KINGS 19:7 Jesus knows that our stewardship journey will be difficult; we are not designed to do it on our own. Fortunately, Jesus gave us the greatest gift of all – the gift of the Eucharist; His own body and blood. When we join our sacrifices with the sacrifice of the Mass, we find the strength and courage to be His joyful disciples.

ST LIBORIUS SCHOOL Dear Parents and Friends of St Liborius, Today we celebrate the feast day of Mary of the Cross Mackillop and gathered for mass as a school community. The first Australian saint who was canonized in 2010, Mary MacKillop was the founder of the Josephites who worked with the poor in educating and caring for them from the mid 1800’s. St Liborius has a strong connection with the Josephites as the nuns educated our students from 1920’s to 1970’s. Thank you to all the families and parishioners who joined the children and staff to celebrate the feast of Mary of the Cross MacKillop. The readers and alter servers did a great job. A special thank you to Sr Geraldine Larkins our Catholic Education Deputy Director, who is also a Josephite Sister. Sr Geraldine spoke to the congregation about Mary MacKillop and the works that Mary did as well as the legacy she left throughout Australia. Thank you also to Fr Antony and Hollie Webster for all their preparation and leadership and the choir and musicians. Congratulations to all who contributed to the planning and the celebrations of our St Liborius Founders day & mass as well as the 150 year celebrations of the St Liborius church. A large crowd attended the weekend activities and mass as well as enjoyed a beautiful lunch. Well done to all involved which was another fine example of the whole St Liborius community banding and working together. Wishing Georgia Griffin all the very best as she begins her maternity leave this week. We hope to hear of some exciting news in the coming weeks. We welcome Aminda Polonowita to the Yr 1/2’s and Nichaud Stringer to the Yr 5/6 ‘s for the remainder of the year. We also welcome Meg Howlett, student teacher, who will complete her 3 week placement in the prep unit. P/T/S Conferences - Thank you to all parents, teachers and students for the way you all engaged in these conferences. It is an important element of our reporting process as well as an opportunity to set clear and achievable goals for the remainder of the year. Athletics Carnival - Congratulations to all students for the way they competed in our 2018 Senior Athletics Carnival. The weather was favourable on the day and a number of students qualified to compete in the Bendigo Catholic Athletics on Monday 20 August. More information will be sent out to these students. Feast of the Assumption - Next Wednesday on August 15 we will celebrate the Feast of the Assumption. This is a Holy Day of Obligation and mass will be held in the Liborius Centre at 9.15am. All parents and parishioners are invited to come along and join the students and staff for this important occasion. 2019 Prep Interviews - This week we have commenced the Prep Interviews with parents and our 2019 preps. It is an exciting time and a joy to witness the excitement that starting school creates along with its many challenges that it creates as these child begin to focus on the next chapter in their academic life. This Friday 10 August the Yr 5/6 students will attend the Annual Bendigo Writers Festival. This is my first week back after Long Service Leave which I spent traveling with my family. There were many highlights on our travels, including visiting the original homestead and relatives of the Dullards in Durrow, Ireland as well as the resting place of Catherine McAuley, founder of the Mercy Sister. We visited many historical sites throughout Europe and spent time connecting with the community in Reggio Emilia who have provided inspiration for many around the world in the way they provide education for their children as a community. I am grateful and thankful for the leadership of Alistair Stewart as Acting Principal and Carmelina Scalora as Acting Deputy Principal who were well supported by the leadership team and staff. Many successful events and processes took place in my absence which is fantastic. Thanks to everyone for your assistance during this time. Finally thank you to everyone for your kind thoughts, prayers and cards with the death of my father, Frank Dullard. He was an amazing man who has left a magnificent legacy as well family and friends who love him dearly. I also appreciate the way our school community banded together to allow for a number of staff to attend the funeral, this was very touching. Thank you every-one. Have a wonderful week Frank Dullard, Principal
