Reflection School News

Reflecting on God’s Word

My house shares a back yard with four college students. Ryan is one of them. Every morning the first thing Ryan does is go out the back door with a bagful of nuts and feed the squirrels. They

hang out in our apple tree the way teenagers hang out around malls. One of the squirrels has become particularly bold and now waits expectantly for Ryan right at the back door. Lately the squirrel won’t go away, no matter the time of day, no matter who’s in the back yard. The squirrel just won’t leave, nuts or no nuts, people or no people. Because it’s become pesky, I now ignore the squirrel most of the time. Though Ryan doesn’t, I do. Nevertheless, the squirrel is slowly getting my attention. Over the course of my lifetime, God is getting my attention, too.

People tend to hear this week’s Gospel parable about the widow who keeps knocking on the judge’s door as a story about God who eventually gives in to the widow. I think it’s more a story about me eventually giving in to God. I hope God’s not offended by being compared to a squirrel, but God is much more like the squirrel (or the widow) than like the judge. God’s the one who does the pleading, it seems to me. While the parable seems to say, “Don’t lose heart; God will eventually hear and answer,” perhaps it’s really saying, “Don’t lose heart; God will not give up knocking on your door.”

5th Grade Sacramental Prayer:

We are tiny, but mighty We disagree, but we forgive each other eventually

We believe in God and we look to him That is why we are His class! St. Leonard 5th grade class

The fifth grade class has started the school year off with a bang! We got right to work with our academics, faith studies, and character building!

In Religion we are practicing our prayers and even made our own Sacramental prayer that represents our class. We are working on consciously

following the Beatitudes and being St. Leonard Peacemakers.

In Science class we are working on our test-taking skills and learning a lot about nature! We also enjoy reading our Scholastic magazines about current events in Science. We are becoming better readers and writers everyday!

In Grammar class we are writing five paragraph essays and reviewing nouns. In Reading class we are reading the novel “Rules” by Cynthia Lord. This book has given us great opportunities to reflect on what it means to be different.

In History class we are working on our Geography skills and in Math we are working on estimating whole numbers and decimals.

CROP Hunger Walk

Today! - after the 12 noon mass Ilsa Dolores Gomez spent 5 days last year at a Catholic Relief Services workshop in the Dominican Republic learning the ins and outs of leading a community savings group.

She discovered how to use a lock box, how to fill out a deposit registry and why savings groups need five officers to run smoothly. By the end of the week, the 40-year-old mother

of five knew more than she ever thought possible about savings groups, a simple approach to microfinance that CRS uses around the world.

For women like Ilsa, it's the strength that comes from playing a leading role in their families and in their communities that often has a lasting effect.

A nine-word note sent Ilsa down a path of self-discovery that culminated in her going back to school. Slipped to her by the CRS program manager who led the workshop, it read, "You are a strong woman. You can do it." Now, having purchased a blow dryer and brushes, Ilsa has turned her front patio into a beauty salon. Neighbors stop by and pay to have their hair done.

The extra money helps pay the household bills, but it's much more than that. "I’m depending on myself," says Ilsa. "And never really thought I could do what I am doing. And little by little, I'm actually doing it." Compassionate people like you make our work possible. CRS empowers women by helping them help themselves and allowing each to realize her full potential in keeping with a saying by Pope John Paul II: "The future starts today, not tomorrow."

The CROP Walk supports the work of Church World Service (CWS), and if chosen as a recipient of your donation, Catholic Relief Services (CRS) throughout the developing world.

By sponsoring a walker, you can help alleviate hunger abroad and in our local community. Together, we can make a difference! For more information call Julie in the parish office, 708-484-0015.

Christian Women’s Book Club The next meeting of the Christian Women's Book Club will be on Wednesday, Oct 23, at 7:00pm at Nancy Morrissey's home. We will be reading Catholicism, A Journey into the Heart of Faith, by Father Robert Barron. This is the companion book to the wonderful 10 part video series, some of which were screened at St. Leonard's. The book not only explores what is good and true about our Catholic faith, but also what is beautiful. The book is available at any bookseller, online or through your local library's MLS

system. All are welcome to attend. For further information, call 708-749-1765.

Port Ministries Summer Mission –

2013 Reporting Back – 6th in a Series

At the end of July 2013 you sent me out on a mission to Port Ministries in the Back of the Yards neighborhood in Chicago. As a member of the St. Leonard’s Garden Club my mission was going to be easy – gardening – or so I thought.

On the first day, during morning-prayer, I listened, not so much to the prayer service, but to the sounds of the neighborhood. A rooster crowed not too far away, neighbors walking, talking, sweeping, and watering their gardens. The sounds I heard were no different than the sounds I remember hearing in my old neighborhood of South Lawndale (Little Village).

I surveyed the gardens and became overwhelmed by what I saw. I would not be gardening on my first day. I would be weeding. Two gardens neglected – weeds, shrubs, and hostas so overgrown that the flowers below them were stunted because the warmth of the sun and the sprinkles of rain could not reach them. There was a vegetable garden and, fortunately, this was the only garden the staff members had time to maintain.

After the weeding was done, the gardening experts for the day, Ms. Joan, 12 year old William Sander, and myself, decided on what was needed. We needed plants and flowers. Not just any plants and flowers. Like the Back of the Yards neighborhood, the gardens at Port Ministries needed plants that could withstand neglect if necessary due to shortage of staff members and priorities in their community mission. (Feeding the hungry and reducing at-risk factors in community children are at the top of the list.) We needed plants with resiliency; plants that could take care of themselves.

With donations from gardeners at St. Leonard Parish, we planted lilies, sedum, black-eyed Susan, purple cone flowers, and much more. We transplanted hostas, mums, tulip bulbs, and a rose bush around the bare statue of Mary. We mulched to slow down the growth of

weeds and to retain any rain/watering the gardens would receive. We moved a bird bath and a bench near the statue of Mary. Like St. Leonard’s Meditation Garden – Port Ministries needed a simple place where you can take a break in your day and listen to God, for he could be heard in the rooster’s crow, the neighbor’s foreign

voice, children’s laughter, and in the sound of the much needed rain on our last day. All the time – God is Good!
