END OF YEAR CEREMONY
Thursday, December 7th, marked our End of Year Ceremony. It was
truly a wonderful event full of laughter, smiles and a couple of
tears. Congratulations to our award winners – Ryan Dabelstein (St
Lawrence Bowls Club Sports Award), Alex Brotherton (Bill and
Norm Hannan Encouragement Award) and William Morley (St
Lawrence Recreation Group Academic Award). You are all worthy
recipients and represent our school positively for our community
to see. Congratulations also to Ryan for being elected as school
captain in 2018. Welcome to our incoming Prep student, Kinely. I
hope next year is as wonderful as we expect it should be. Thank
you to the community for coming along and sharing this night with
us. I hope you enjoyed the night. Thank you to Leesa and Tony
who provided dinner for us once again and making it a special

RYAN
Ryan has attended St
Lawrence State School
since he was in Prep. He has
worked with a number of
teachers and will next year
take on the role as school
captain. The process that
was undertake for him to be
elected as school captain
was rigorous and asked him
to challenge himself to
prove he was worthy of the
prestigious position of
school captain. He rose to
the challenge and I look
forward to working with him
in 2018. Congratulations
also o winning the St
Lawrence Bowls Club
Sports Award. Enjoy your
holidays.

ADAM
Adam has had a great year
in 2017. He has delivered
some of the best pieces of
work from any of our
students throughout 2017.
His HASS task this term on
Proserpine was simply
amazing and you can view it
on the school Facebook
page. His poem from the
End of Year Ceremony,
Uninhabited, was performed
beautifully with his well-
timed shriek adding hugely
to his performance. His
speech in March at our
speech night, We Need a
Doctor in Town won him an
award within our cluster.
Let’s hope 2018 can bring
further success.

ALEX
Alex has made some
massive gains in 2017. Alex
began prep with us at St
Lawrence State School at
the beginning of the year
and has made the most
significant improvement
over the course of the year.
Alex shows a great deal of
pride in his work. When he
completes a task he picks it
up and wants to show
everyone what he has done.
He is proud of what he has
done and wants others to
share in his achievements.
Congratulations to Alex on
being the inaugural recipient
of the Bill and Norm Hannan
Encouragement Award.
Enjoy your holidays.

KHLOE
Khloe is another of our
preps from 2017. Khloe
has been a wonderful
student at school and
follows instructions to
complete her tasks. She
has also made significant
improvement in her
studies. She made greater
than expected gains in
both her literacy and
numeracy assessments
that are completed. A
particularly large gain for
Khloe was in her
swimming where she
travelled further in the
short time we attended
lessons than any other
student. Enjoy your
holidays Khloe.

WILLIAM
William is our final prep
student from 2017. William
had an incredible
attendance rate in 2017 and
only missed two and a half
days all year. He proved
throughout the year that his
enthusiasm in his learning
will take him a long way as
he saw immense
improvement in his speech
over the course of 2017. He
has improved from being
unable to read to completing
a level 10PM reader. He
also set himself as a role
model after being awarded
the St Lawrence Recreation
Group Academic Award.
Well done on a great first
year of school.

JAKE
Jake has had exceptional
attendance throughout
2017. The tasked he has
applied his best efforts
have been truly wonderful
to read. His recent HASS
piece on the changes to
transportation over time
showed wonderful design,
content, deeper thinking
and sentence structure.
His efforts to stand up and
present his adaptation to
Row Your Boat at both the
Marlborough Poetry
Recital and at our End of
Year Ceremony speak to
how well Jake can perform
at school. Enjoy the
holidays and see you for a
big 2018.

DECKLEN
Decklen has continued his
reading progress which
had him jump from being
unable to read at the start
of 2016 to completing a
PM15 by the end of 2016.
He won the
Encouragement Award in
2016 and has continued to
show large jumps in his
reading level. Decklen is
now able to complete a
PM26. This is a huge gain
in the space of two years.
Decklen also presented
his adaptation to Row your
Boat very successfully at
the End of Year Ceremony
as well. Enjoy your break
and see you for a big year
in 2018.
STAFF and P&C
Mrs Wendy Counsell (Business
Manager/Cleaner/President)
Mrs Counsell is one of the key reasons why
St Lawrence State School is making such
amazing leaps. She works incredibly hard
in all of her roles to make sure the students
have the cleanest environment to learn in;
the best educational tools to learn with;
and the best P&C body to support learning.
Without Mrs Counsell, the educational
experience for our students would
certainly not be the same. Thank you for
always going above and beyond. You are
an inspiration to us all.
Mrs Maryanne Dalglish (Teacher Aide)
Mrs Dalglish has a huge impact on our
students and the levels they reach
academically. Mrs Dalglish works tirelessly
to ensure that every child receives one-
on-one time to address areas identified to
improve on. Our students have made some
very large gains throughout the year and
they have Mrs Dalglish thank for their
gains. Enjoy your well-deserved break.
Miss Amy Herley (Speech Language
Pathologist)
Miss Amy has been working with a number
of our students to help them with their
speech. Our students have made significant
improvements. Thank you for your
commitment and driving from Mackay
every Thursday. You will be missed but
good luck in Rockhampton.
Ms Stacey Pownall (P&C Member)
Stacey has been helping our P&C
throughout the year in preparation for her
eldest daughter attending in 2018. Thank
you for giving your time and energy and
always striving to help St Lawrence be
everything it can be.
Mrs Allison Brinkworth (Cluster Teacher)
Mrs B has been a wonderful addition to our
little family at St Lawrence State School.
She has provided excitement for our
students in their learning. The benefits of
having Mrs B teaching at our school will be
long-felt. Good luck at Narangba Valley. I
hope you enjoyed your time here at St
Lawrence as much as we all enjoyed
having you here each week.
STAFF and P&C
Ms Jody Torkington (Teacher Aide/Grounds
person/Treasurer)
Jody works tirelessly at St Lawrence State
School as both a staff member and as a
P&C member. She keeps our school
looking clean and tidy while also helping
our students one-on-one in their
educational requirements. As the P&C
treasurer she makes sure that every event
we hold is run to plan to make sure we can
provide the best opportunities to the
community to help our students receive
anything they need to help them enjoy and
thrive in their school experience. Thank
you for your commitment and hard work.
Mrs Kari Morphy (Chaplain)
Chappy helps our students to manage
themselves to become more effective
people. She is using Franklin Covey’s 7
Habits of Highly Effective People to ensure
that our students can achieve whatever it
is they choose to reach for. Chappy is an
extremely valued member of our little
family. Thank you for everything you do
within your role, and everything else you
do above and beyond.
Mrs Sharmayne Chirgwin
(Volunteer/Secretary)
Sharmayne gives up her own time to help
our students with their reading. Sharmayne
comes in weekly to provide assistance and
one-on-one reading to our school
students. This is greatly appreciated.
Sharmayne is also the secretary of the P&C
and helps out with our events that we hold.
She has been integral in putting together
the recipe books that Mrs Counsell worked
so hard to get up and running. Sharmayne
provides tuckshop for us and always
promotes the school to others. Thank you
for your time and energy Sharmayne.
Mrs Sian Morphy (Relief Teacher/Vice-
President/E-Kindy Facilitator)
Mrs Morley has provided her time and
assistance constantly throughout the year. As
our E-Kindy facilitator she ensure that our
young children have a passion for education
from a young age. As a relief teacher she
ensure that our children receive the
educational experience they deserve and she
is always helping with all the different
endeavours the P&C undertake. Thank you for
your time, energy and commitment.
Reading Matters
Reading is the most fundamental skills that school endeavour to teach children. It is a skill
that is developed to provide opportunities for children, provide fun and laughter, develop
empathy and consideration for others or to provide information and knowledge. It is
extremely important. To help our parents with the selection of stories for their children, St
Lawrence State School will provide new reading logs for students next year. Within these is
a recommended reading list for different age groups. I have attached these lists below as
they may help with Christmas shopping as the holidays approach.
The Importance of Reading Lots have learning has happened throughout this year, But now it’s time to consider the upcoming year. Consider the films they watch and the words that are said And consider the books your child can say they have read. Consider your actions or things left not done Remember to make sure your child has some fun. The holidays may be stressful but there’s no need to fear Because they eventually end and they start the new school year. We want you children to be successful at school. And reading is something that makes them cool. Readings helps students make much needed gains It’s like food for the belly but goes into your brains. New words, new marks, new beginnings, new ends A wider collection of thoughts to share with good friends. New characters, new plots, new twists and new turns Every book they read helps them to learn.
This holiday season as you treat them with your love and your care, Remember screens shouldn’t be the only things at which they stare. A book is something that children can spend many hours Imagining beasts, princesses, animals or super powers. Tales from the past that may no longer be frequently told Memories from those that have now grown old. A love story to show how kind and thoughtful people can be An adventure to explore the things no one can see No matter the story the gains will be great So make them pick up a book Before they lose interest And it is too late! Below is a list of books that would be great for gifts, prizes or treats Or to mark an occasion or a remarkable feat. Encourage them and guide them or read to them at night Make sure they know that books do not bite. These books that are listed below are samples of great texts to explore These are just some but there are many more. Next year they will be challenged to complete the whole lot It won’t be their homework but will be worth a shot.
ATTENDANCE AWARDS
READING AWARDS
CROQLAND
Every Day Counts at St Lawrence State School. This is something we have worked very hard
to develop at St Lawrence. Well done to six of our students, Jake, Adam, Ryan, William, Alex
and Khloe who have 100% attendance in term 3.
Reading every night is extremely important. The words
you use, the ideas you discuss and the skills you practise
make this a perfect opportunity to improve at school.
Reading with your children also promotes a healthy
interest in literature. Well done to William for reaching
175 nights of reading and Decklen for reaching 125 nights
of reading in 2017.
