MY INTERNSHIP AT THE ST. KITTS
AND NEVIS MISSION AND
EMBASSY - BY JEANETTE (INTERN)
As I walked to the Organization of
American States (OAS) for my interview
with the Permanent Representative of
St. Kitts and Nevis to the OAS, H.E.
Jacinth Henry-Martin, for an internship
position at the Mission/Embassy, I had
no idea I was about to meet one of the
most passionate and determined
diplomats in D.C., less so that I was
about to be accepted for one of the
most nurturing experiences in my
career. I was very enthusiastic when I
received an e-mail saying that I had
been accepted. I spent about four
enriching months side by side with an
incredible team, and I have many things
to be grateful . I developed a deep
cultural appreciation for the twin-Island
Federation and its people, and I left with
many experiences that I will take with
me for the rest of my professional and
personal life.
The Mission/Embassy is all but a
conventional/ordinary office, which is
exactly why it is so interesting. They get
so much done, in little time, and with a
small team. During my internship, the
Ambassador assumed the presidency of
the Permanent Council of the OAS, and
had to somehow balance that with her
other positions as the Ambassador to
the U.S. and Mexico (who knows how
she does it, but she does). During the
same time, the Embassy engaged in
various events like Around the World
Embassy Tour in DC and the Food
festival at the OAS. Thus, while one day
I would be at the embassy office writing
a press release, another day I would be
attending a CARICOM or Permanent
Council meeting at the OAS, and still
another day I would be learning how to
dance Caribbean music while treating
guests interested in the twin-island with
typical drinks and food.
Indeed, one of the things I will be most
grateful for is having met and engaged
with the most wonderful staff. They
gave me the best insight of the culture
and diversity of St. Kitts and Nevis,
leaving in me no doubt that the people I
met at the Mission, and the people they
represent in St. Kitts and Nevis, must be
one of the friendliest, warmest, and
most culturally sensitive people in the
world. This internship was the best
introduction I could ever had not only to
St. Kitts and Nevis, but also to the
politics, history, and culture of the
Caribbean. As a recent graduate from
American University in International
Relations, the skills and knowledge I
have gained at the Mission are
invaluable.
Traveling to St. Kitts and Nevis is
definitely on my next-to-do list.

how purposefully our nation advances
towards the attainment of lofty but realistic
developmental objectives…..” Immediately
following the service nationals enjoyed a
hearty lunch Kittitian and Nevisian style.
