COORDINATING PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE

STUDENT LEARNINGS FROM LUMINOSITY

Recently students from our schools had the opportunity to attend a three day leadership seminar called LUMINOSITY at The Glasshouse. It was a great opportunity for students to listen to a range of inspiring speakers and to mix with other like-minded students from the local area.

Students were invited to summarise their key learnings from the seminar. The following quotes from student evaluations are worthy of reflection:

There are many amazing opportunities for us to live a fulfilling life and make a difference in the

lives of others.

Choose a path in life that makes you happy and keeps you safe.

You will be the average of the five people you spend the most time with.

Failure is important in reaching success.

Everything starts with an idea – pursue them.

Gratitude is extremely important.

Develop yourself first so that you can help those around you.

Allow your challenges to motivate you.

Not everyone survives ‘the battle’.

Break the mould (the stereotype) if you want to achieve greatness.

Know your own beliefs and values and work from that base.

Have a plan for success in life.

I have the power to change my story.

Feelings are not facts.

Do something you are passionate about.

It doesn’t matter where you come from.

I can change people’s lives.

There is always someone who can help.

To reach your potential we have to make profound change.

To change things we have to be part of the solution.

What you believe you can achieve if you try hard enough.

Sometimes you will get knocked down but you have to get up and keep trying.

Mr Jim O’Brien Coordinating Principal

PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE HSC Creative Arts Night Congratulations to Mrs Claudette Stace, Mrs Leanne Johnson, Mrs Tracy Pares and all the wonderful team of Creative Art teachers who demonstrated a true professional learning community last night by all working together to put on a fantastic exhibition of Year 12 talent at the HSC Creative Arts Night. Thank you to the trainees who accompanied our students, serving refreshments and looked after sound and lighting. A big thank you also to Mrs Diana Walsh and to Ms Donna Hamlin for working with Hospitality students to provide a great supper and coffee. Year 11, 2015 Interviews Over the past few weeks the College Leadership Team and Senior Leaders of Pastoral Care have been conducting interviews for Year 11, 2015 students. My personal thanks goes out to all staff involved in this process.

The overall enrolment of St Joseph’s Regional College for 2015 is looking very strong, with our junior and senior cohort population increasing. A key indicator of how well a school is progressing is definitely reflected by the willingness of families to entrust their sons and daughters to the care of a highly professional teaching and support staff who share in a vision of “Excellence.” I would like to personally thank all staff for the wonderful work they are doing with pursuing “excellence” here at the College. In addition, this pursuit of excellence is reflected in the wonderful student leaders we have here at the College.

Luminosity Summit Evaluation In July a number of students from St Joseph’s Regional College attended the Luminosity Youth Summit 2014 which was held in Port Macquarie, I commend to you some comments from our students who attended the 3 day event. They were asked the following question:

Why would you recommend or not recommend the summit to friends in future years?

Laura McMahon- I would recommend the summit to friends in future years as it was an extremely inspirational experience. It changed the way I view things in life in a positive manner. It forces you to realise that everything is achievable if you set your mind to it.

Gus McPhail- I have told everyone since Luminosity about how great it is, about the opportunities the chances of what Luminosity can bring.

Taylor LoMonaco- I would recommend it to my friends because it was such a great experience and I learnt so much about being a leader and to make our dreams a reality.

Jarrod Stewart- I would definitely recommend it to friends because it is an amazing experience, to hear people’s stories and go home with great advice for your own stories.

Mary Shelley- I would definitely recommend it to all my friends next year and am already planning to again myself.

Kaes Bessling- It’s a real eye opener and good for everyone; I would definitely recommend it to anyone. It broadens your mind and will help me personally contribute more to the school community.

Walkathon Finally, last Friday our annual Walkathon was held, students and staff walked from Lighthouse Beach to Lake Cathie where they then enjoyed a well-earned sausage sandwich and drink.

I would like to thank St Joseph’s Regional staff and students for their tremendous contribution to the Walkathon. A special thank you to Mrs Joanne Williams for coordinating this event, and also to Nicole Ashton who volunteered to assist on the day.

Thank you also to the following business who generously donated to the day. Students who have raised over $50 go into a draw to win some of these great prises.

NEWS FROM OUR LEADER OF CATECHESIS AND EVANGELISATION Year 10 Mass Postponed The Year 10 Mass which is scheduled for Friday, 22nd August has been postponed due to the clash of our Year 10 CSYMA students attending ‘SHINE’. A new date will be forthcoming in the near future.

Upcoming events:

Proclaim Lismore Parents 2014 'The latest Proclaim e-bulletin features a poignant and moving story of happiness. As parents and caregivers, the greatest wish we have for our children is that they experience lasting happiness and success. Our children spend a significant portion of their lives at school, and so it is vital that as parents we ensure we do our part to create an education experience that contributes to our children’s sense of happiness and achievement. Strong, happy children are produced by strong committed communities, and we can only build these when parents and schools work in partnership with each other. The Proclaim Parent Gatherings will be an exciting opportunity for parents to have their say and be truly listened to about how we can build the most vibrant, faith- filled and welcoming communities for our children and their families. Register your interest in attending your local Proclaim Parent Gathering at

This is a fundraiser aimed at conquering homelessness by raising awareness as well as raising money for the St Vincent De Paul Society to help fund projects to combat homelessness. Around 125 young people are reported to be homeless on any given night in the Port Macquarie area alone. Together as a community we can make a difference and change statistics like these. YEAR 11 LEADERSHIP CAMP

As part of the induction process for 2014/15, our College Student Leadership team for the next year recently attended a leadership camp at ‘The Great Aussie Bush Camp’. This 2-day experience challenged the students on a number of levels to which they dealt with admirably. A combination of initiative challenges and problem solving activities were set for them to forge teamwork, trust and resilience in order to achieve success. This coupled with individual based challenges on the various camp facilities.

The group of leaders for 2015 have such forged a strong identity of what is means to be a leader and leadership in their role in 2015 and hope to use their collective values to initiate their goals as a SRC for the future (Mitchell Williams’ speech on an admirable leader is included below). A huge thank you to all the students for their enthusiasm and commitment at the camp, to the activity facilitators at The Great Aussie Bush Camp for providing such a great program and to Mrs Eichmann and Mr Lewis for their direction and management of this endeavour. I look forward with confidence that our student leadership is in very good hands

So I was having trouble picking a leader to talk about, I wanted to speak about an individual that I have connected with in the past. I was thinking, who has made the biggest impact on the world we live in today? And for me the obvious answer was Jesus. Jesus was the one man I could think of that has revolutionised the world. He had a clear vision; it was to bring salvation into the world. He was focused on it, and everything he did was to accomplish his vision. Jesus said several times, “Come, follow me.” His was a program of “do what I do,” rather than “do what I say.”

But as the controversy for realism in Jesus Christ is not believed by everyone, it is questioned whether or not he is a well suited leader. For me and for many of you it won’t matter. Jesus or the story of Jesus has influenced the way we think, whether or not you realise it. The Commandments shaped the laws that manufacture our communities and our morals are constantly supported by the past’s acts of Jesus Christ.

“A leader is best when people barely know he exists, when his work is done, his aim fulfilled, they will say: we did it ourselves.” That is a quote from ‘Lao Tzu’; it means that the best way to lead is to accomplish a manner in which your followers lead themselves. None of us here have ever seen Jesus before, that means that through his life we are leading ourselves, we are followers of him and he crafts what we do and say just by living before us.

Jesus did many things in many different ways; his biggest accomplishment was starting his public ministry and gaining followers to spread the word. This was the start of Jesus’ vision to a better world.

The most important part of my speech is showing to you that a good leader is not one that stands out the front giving instructions but is one that dictates from the heart, one that shows the way not tells it.

Thankyou

Mitchell Williams Sean Jennings Student Leaders Coordinator 2015

Year 10 2015 Device Options. IMPORTANT information for parents of Year 9. Year 9 were given an information letter this week regarding the type of device (iPad or laptop) they are expected to bring to school next year. This letter with the options and more detailed information on iPads can be accessed at http://go2school.wix.com/year102015 This website also has a Contacts page if you wish further clarification on any of this information. We feel the information contained on this website is comprehensive so, at this stage, we do not envisage the need for an information evening for all Year 9. Instead, you may like to take the opportunity at Monday's Parent Teacher night to direct any questions to Mr Barry Watson after you have digested the information contained within the letter or website. If there is a strong demand for an information evening, we will certainly consider this and inform you in future newsletter(s). Mr Barry Watson Leader of Learning Technologies

Literacy and Numeracy Week

Literacy Numeracy Week begins on the 25th August. The College has implemented a number of strategies this year to improve the Literacy Numeracy at the College. We recently read the following and thought it timely that we share it with you; it certainly provides food for thought.

Did you know that what you do at home can help your kids do better at school?

When parents are engaged in their children’s education — take interest in what they do at school and share the importance of learning with them — students tend to do better.

Coupled with quality teaching, parental engagement is a key ingredient in helping students succeed, which is why they are both pillars of the Australian Government’s Students First approach.

Some ideas for getting engaged with your child’s education are:

Sharing the value of education with your children. Encouraging and supporting your children to do and learn about what they are interested in. Discuss with your children what they are learning at school and what happens in their day. Helping your children take responsibility for their study and learning. Encourage and set up good study habits, problem solving and research skills. Reading with your children – talk about books and stories to help children develop language

skills. Spending quality time together and talking about a range of topics. Challenging your children to relate these topics to what they learn at school. Encouraging a range of interests, friendships, a healthy diet and good sleep patterns. Praising your children for all their achievements whether they are big or small.

It is important to remember that parents don’t need to have all the answers about school work. Parents can however, have hopes for their children’s future, and these hopes can assist in creating the right environment for their children to have a positive school experience. Janine Handley and Lisa Mahon Leader of Literacy and Numeracy

This year, the theme is “Connect to Reading”. Connect to reading is about enjoying the experience of exploring story, and travelling to other worlds.

The reflected slogan. Reading to connect, has a broader social meaning, suggesting that reading assists in creating a bond with others. Within the world of the contemporary child, this is also relevant as they read books and they read to connect through a variety of media

Seasons for Growth for Parents:

Supporting your child following separation

and divorce

Parent Invitation

In partnership with Good Grief and the Diocese of Lismore, Parent Assembly are offering Seasons for Growth for Parents: Supporting your child following separation or divorce this term in our schools.

For a long time our Diocesan Schools have offered the highly successful Seasons for Growth® program for children and young people. For many years, parents whose children have participated in the Seasons for Growth® Young People’s Program have been asking, ‘Is there a program that can help parents, too’?

Seasons for Growth for Parents has been developed to meet this need. The program provides an opportunity for you to reflect on the experience of separation and divorce from your child’s perspective, and to explore ideas and strategies that might help you support your child/ren through the changes happening in your family.

Seasons for Growth for Parents: Supporting your child following separation or divorce is a small group program for 5-10 parents. It can be held over 2 x 2 hour sessions or 4 x 1 hour sessions and is for parents only. The date and times are dependent on the availability of the group. Cost: free of charge

Some feedback from our last group –

“Being with others and listening to their experiences caused me to realise I’m not going through such a hard time. Visual aids, colour and modules very helpful”

“Identifying the different emotions and stages that both the parent and child go through and how to cope with each stage and what you can expect. “

“Learning about the progression through the process – the”Season’s” and knowing where I am now and that things will improve. Also learning that the cycle can repeat.”

SAPSS First XV v John Hampden Grammar- Rugby Union St Agnes’ Parish Secondary Schools (SAPSS) has recently played host to a touring rugby team from John Hampden Grammar School visiting from the UK. On Wednesday 23rd July the teams met at St Joseph’s Regional College for a truly exciting game of rugby union.

The first half was fiercely contested by the touring XV but the size and speed of the local Port Macquarie boys saw them draw away to a 21-0 advantage at half time. Some stand out performers were Bryce Cunning at half, Jamieson Williams at fly-half and Alec Newell in the forwards. Blake Ryan, once injected into the game score some scintillating tries and held the backline defence together.

The half-time break had a positive effect on the tourists who shocked the SAPSS team with two quick tries in the first ten minutes. John Hampden’s organisation and structure holding firm against our attack and a few strategic injuries added in the mix saw the SAPSS team looking fragile.

However, some inspirational play by the five-eighth Jamison Williams (SJRC), rampaging prop Jake Jones (Newman) and flying centre Rhys McCalmly (MacKillop) took the game away from the visitors and at full time the Port Macquarie team won 28-19. At the post match ceremony the man-of-the-match was awarded to Alec Newell from St Joseph’s Regional College for his powerful play in the forwards.

This was the second visit by John Hampden Grammar School to play the Combined Catholic Colleges team from St Agnes’ Parish and the results are now tied. John Hampden has vowed to return to maintain the tradition. It is an exciting event for the students involved not only in First XV but for the families who have billeted the tourists. I would like to thank John Hampden Grammar for the visit and the positive impact it has had on the whole school community. SAPSS First XV v Dauntsey’s School The St Agnes’ Parish Secondary Schools Combined Colleges First XV rugby union team played its second match in quick succession on Friday 1st August after recent success against the visiting John Hampden Grammar from the UK. The Dauntsey’s School from Bath in England has close links with Port Macquarie and returned after a three year hiatus to challenge the rugby credentials of our schools.

The game was a showcase game held under lights at Stuart Park. The game served to promote junior rugby and St Agnes’ Parish congratulates the Pirates and the Port Macquarie Junior Rugby Union for their support in making the game a success.

In clear cold conditions with a strong westerly blowing, the Dauntsey’s team felt right at home and quickly scored in the first five minutes. The try was unconverted and spurred on the SAPSS XV to redouble their defensive efforts. There were some stinging hits and both teams gave as good as they got. The score remained 5-0 at half time.

Some stand out performers in the first half were Nick Goodfellow at flyhalf who linked incisively with Rhys McCalmly and Harry Sargeant in some cutting backline moves. The forwards were well organised and provided the SAPSS team with some secure ball, ably led by Brandon Robinson, Harry Burke and Julian Morosin. Kye Marshall as captain secured some quick turnovers but the Dauntsey’s team were rugged in their defence and cut down some promising Port Macquarie raids very close to their line.

The second half was just as bruising with Dauntsey’s suffering a number of injuries. They had the majority of the possession early in the second half and managed to put on two more tries taking the

score to 19-0. The injection of reserves Tom Schneider and Kaes Besseling lifted the SAPSS forwards and No’8 Shaun Hinton began to make some powerful and damaging runs. This led to SAPSS Combined Colleges XV scoring after wearing down the Dauntsey’s defence. The final score was 19-5, with Dauntsey’s School taking the honours for the second time against a strong Port Macquarie side.

I would like to thank Mr John Rossington (St Joseph’s Regional College), Mr Peter Scibberas (Newman) and Mr David Jenkins and Mr Darren Smith (MacKillop Senior College) for the organisation and coaching of the combined team. I would also like to thank the families that supported the visit by taking billets for the weekend, without this support the game would not have been a success.

We look forward to the return visits by Dauntsey’s School and John Hampden Grammar in three years’ time. It is a valuable community building visit and creates important links for the players, billets, parents and staff.
