Independent, collaborative And innovative learners
Newsletter No. 14 31st August 2018
Dear Families, We are very grateful for the Religious Education Conference that the staff attended last week.
Mr Paul Spence from the Archdiocese of Melbourne lead our staff and we stayed at the Mary MacKillop Centre in East Melbourne. It was a great opportunity for us to develop positive relationships with each other so that ultimately we can work together particularly well and deliver the best learning opportunities for our students.

This weekend a number of our Gr 4 students will receive the Sacrament of Eucharist for the first time at mass at 6pm on Saturday. We remember these children: Lucy Cathomen, Sieanna Paul, Jye Lister, Isabella Brown, Josh Upston, Blake Dunston, Justyce Word and Matt Balfour, and pray for their families at this time. We will have a special celebratory morning tea on Tuesday with the children and the staff at school at 11am.
Pasta Lunch We thoroughly enjoyed our pasta lunch on Wednesday. Thanks to Jane, Fran, Lauren and Rosie for preparing this for us. We raised over $200 from this fundraiser and it was de-licious! Emergency Practice Procedures
Each term we practise our emergency procedures to make sure that we all feel comfortable and know what to do in the case of an emergency. On Tuesday, we practised a ‘Lockdown Procedure’ when the students were outside playing. When the emergency alarm sounded, the students came into the school buildings and remained inside until the all clear was given. The students and teachers reacted calmly and completed the practice in an orderly fashion. You might like to talk to your child about the importance of listening to instructions when you hear the emergency siren. Safety continues to be paramount in our school. Father’s Day Stall
A big thank you to Jane, Lauren, Kylee, Melissa Nardone and Melissa Lister for organising and running our stall this year. The students love going shopping for Dad at school. Your help is very much appreciated.

Father’s Day
We thank God for our Dads and we appreciate that they play a very important role in our families. On Monday September 3rd we will gather at school at 8am for a special breakfast with our Dads and at 9am we will celebrate a liturgy in the Mary MacKillop room. We hope you can join us. Order forms (attached to newsletter) for breakfast have already been sent home. To get into the special feeling of this day we are encouraging children to come dressed as their Dad to school on Monday. There is no donation
required and the breakfast is free. Trafalgar Football / Netball Club. Trafalgar Senior Football Club will be playing in the Grand final on Saturday September 8th and the A grade Netball team is playing this weekend in the Preliminary Final. We have asked our very talented footballers and netballers to come and run lunchtime clinics for us next week. At this stage I am still waiting to know which day this will be. As soon as I know I will let the community know. The children could wear their PE uniform this day. We wish our local club all the best in the finals. Melbourne Writer’s Festival
Yesterday four of our talented writers attended a writer’s workshop in Melbourne. Adele Diwell-Fowler, Justyce Word, Ciele Towb and Stella Chapman participated in 3 workshops. We thank Anne, Adam, Lauren and Mick who went with the students. At St Joseph’s we strive to be our best and this is an example of further developing our talents. Police Parenting Night
On Wednesday September 5th our local Police are running a Parenting Night at our school at 6pm till 7.30pm. We will start with wine and cheese at 6pm and the presentation will start at 6.30. Our police officers are happy to answer our questions. Topics included: Family and Home Safety, Cyber Safety. We aim to support each other in our very important roles of parenting. Please feel especially welcome to attend and bring a friend. Everyone is welcome. Please see the attached flyer. School Raffle We were lucky enough to win a UHU glue stick competition. We won $1,000 in vouchers and we are using the vouchers as prizes for our school raffle. First prize is $500 in travel vouchers, Second prize is $300 in travel vouchers and Third prize is $100 in travel vouchers. A raffle book has been sent home and we are encouraging everyone to try and sell the tickets. The raffle books need to be returned whether they are sold or not as we have to account for each ticket. There is a prize in each grade for the student who sells the most amount of tickets. The raffle will be drawn after the Fun Run on Friday October 26th. May God continue to bless and guide us in our work.
