Notes from the Pastor: Happy and Blessed Easter!
Easter is the feast of all feasts! For me, it is even more meaningful than Christmas! Try to im-agine this: you were joyful at the birth of your child. What if your child died, then after three daysthe child come back to life. The joy would certainly be unimaginable and immeasurable! This isthe joy of Easter! And this is the good news to all of us, especially those among us whose lovedones have already departed: they are alive! The proof? Our Lord’s resurrection!
What’s the proof that Jesus rose from the dead? I questioned that before when I was growing
up. But as many people have realized, I found the answer with the lives of the apostles – their wit-nessing: how they lived and how they died! According to the Acts of the Apostles and the Epis-tles, they lived like brothers and sisters, loving, helping, forgiving, and united to one another in thename of Christ! How they died? They chose to die a martyr’s death: stoned, beheaded, crucified,
flayed alive, burned at the stake…if they were spreading a lie that Jesus rose from the dead, would
they be willing to die a horrible death for the sake of a lie? Think about that! But of course this isa matter of faith. And I always say: for those who believe, no proof is needed. For those who donot believe, no proof is sufficient!
And the most wonderful news of all: Jesus’ death and resurrection saves us and restores us
back to God! That’s why we are called an Easter People because of our Easter faith! Without
Christ’s resurrection, we will not be here! Now the challenge is on us! God calls us to live and, if
opportunity provides, die like the Apostles and many Christians did! We are called to be His wit-nesses!
I thank all the people who made our Holy Week celebrations successful and meaningful! For Girard: special thanks to Joan Davied and all volunteers to be lectors, EME’s, gift bearers, sacris-
tans; to Faith Paoni and all our altar servers especially to Lucas Gorentz; to Nancy Hofer andthose who helped her decorate our church, and to Ruth Duling and all our musicians and choir; toMichelle Puckett and our CYM kids for the Easter Egg Hunt! I thank the 12 volunteers for thewashing of the feet! Thanks for the humility!

The Resurrection: Foundation of our FaithMost of us take the Resurrection for granted. We’ve heard the
story so often and have attended Mass on so many Easter Sundaymornings that the reality of what actually happened can escape us.We have to step back to that FIRST Easter morning and relive thoseevents with the apostles before we can begin to appreciate the fantas-tic event we’re celebrating at the Saturday vigil and on Easter Sun-
day!Jesus died on Friday in a humiliating execution. His enemies were
happy for they had won their battle against the Teacher. His follow-ers were shocked, for they believed He was the Messiah. Now, in-stead of leading His people, on this FIRST Easter Sunday morning,His followers were hiding, fearful of arrest. It wasn’t supposed to end
this way. Jesus, Himself, had told them differently, but no one lis-tened and no one believed. He had told them of His own impendingdeath. Now, the women who had followed Him were returning to thetomb to complete the Jewish burial rite. They found the huge stonerolled back and the tomb empty. They hurried back to the Upper Room and told Peter and the others that the body was not there.Something had happened and they didn’t quite know what. But, by
day’s end, they’d be faced with the most alarming fact in the history
of the world!Mary Magdalene had stayed behind at the tomb when the other
women had left and what she saw frightened her beyond belief. Asshe wandered, she came across a man she thought was the gardener. She inquired as to where the Master’s body had been taken, and she
heard the living voice of Someone she knew was dead. “Oh, my
God!” she exclaimed, for there in her midst was the man she had seen
executed just two days before! Jesus told her, “Go and tell Peter and
the others that I have risen, as I told them in Galilee.” Still shaking,
she ran to tell them that Jesus was alive. The apostles were skeptical, some did not believe her. Peter and John ran to the tomb and returnedto say the tomb was, indeed, empty. The apostles were afraid that theauthorities would blame them for the missing body; therefore, theyremained in the upper room all day, fearing that Roman soldiers werelooking for them. Toward evening, they grew hungry and sat at tablewith the bread and honey that they had. In the middle of the meal, they heard a strange sound and Jesus was suddenly standing there before them. He told them not to be afraid and showed them themarks of the nails and the wound in His side, saying, “See, it is really
me; I have died, but I am risen from the dead.” That is the startling fact upon which our whole faith is based. In-
stead of His death being the end of His work; it was just the begin-ning. His Resurrection had turned the whole world on end. The apos-tles were commissioned to go to the four corners of the earth, bring-ing His message to everyone. They had been a small band of fright-ened, confused disciples and on Easter morning, they became themessengers of the Living God. Our Faith was born that day andthrough the years, we’ve built our whole Christian life around this
faith that will carry us to the glory of eternity!Article by Marcel Normand
