Principal’s ReportDear Parents, Students, Staff and all associated with St Joseph’s Community

It is that time of the year when I feel I am caught between two competing universes. On one hand, we are very busy preparing for next year – organising new teaching and support staff, allocating teachers and classes, and negotiating tradesmen to come in to work over the holidays. At the same time, there is still much to do before the end of the year – assessment and reporting, concert performances, Junior Athletics Day, Year 6 Graduation, End of Year Mass, and the final assembly with the drawing of our major school raffle.

As people who lead very busy lives, we always face the danger of projecting our lives into future events to the extent that we lose sight of the present moment – the smile on someone’s face when they pass us by, the question asked by a friend, teacher, family member, that we simply don’t hear.

Of course we need to carefully consider our decisions and future plans. To not do so would be irresponsible. However we need to keep a balance between now and then so that we avoid slipping into anxiety about our futures and free ourselves from frantic feelings about all the things we need to do NOW or my whole life will be affected.

The words of Psalm 46:10 are what I draw on Be still and know that I am God. In spite of our best efforts, we cannot know the future, even our own, but we can experience serenity – a kind of spiritual calm, in doing what we should be doing and leaving the rest to God.

2019 Staffing The 2019 teaching staff is as follows:

Joanne Coldebella will be continue her role as as Deputy Principal and Learning Adjustment. Di Gin, Kylee Bertacco, Kasey Heim will be supplementary teachers for these classes. Ann Diviny, who is presently on long service leave, has only recently informed me that she will not be returning in 2019 and as such we have yet to finalise the available position in the 5/6 neighbourhood.

My prayer is that the final weeks will remain productive and a time of genuine closure so that we can look back on the year knowing that we have made it the best year it could possibly have been.

December 14 will be the final assembly for the year and will host the drawing of our School Raffle Winners. The Year 6 Graduants will present prayer. During Term 4 the school captains have been helping to write a child friendly version of our Child Safety Policy. Our captains have worked to convert our policy into a more child friendly language and concepts that can be easily understood by our students.

The 2018 captains have been enthusiastic and thoughtful contributors to this important work.

Some of their thoughts on the process are:

Sam: It makes you more aware of what the school does to keep you safe.

Dominic: It helped me realise how much effort is put into the child safety policy.

Divya: You know what to do when you’re unsafe.

Rex: It is good that the younger students in the school will know what the policy’s about.

Special mention goes to all students who received special awards at our last school assembly, Friday November 30.

2018 Mathematical Olympiads - Certificates of Achievement: Year 5: Connor O’Mahony, Sarah Seuren and Nate Shields-Strong. Year 6: Belinda Baird, Coco Curtis, Charlie Dawson, Will Hynes, Xavier Lindsay, Jaime Little, Alice Mabilia, Tate Rigby, Sienna Shields-Strong and Finn Wilkinson.

Will Hynes was also awarded a Special Achievement Medal for Outstanding Effort and Improvement in Mathematical Problem Solving.

Belinda Baird was awarded a Top of our Team Trophy and a Top 25% Badge.

Congratulations to Sarah Seuren on winning the 2018 Christmas Card Design Competition. This was awarded to Sarah on behalf of the Catholic Education Office.

2018 Nation Water Week Poster Competition winners were awarded on behalf of South Gippsland Water to:

Rubi-Jean Hallam: 1st place Year 1/2 Lulu Curtis: 1st place Year 3/4 and State Finalist. Matilda Luck: 1st place Year 5/6 and State Finalist.

2019 School AssembliesIn 2019, weekly assemblies will be scheduled Monday mornings commencing at 9am.

Monday morning assemblies will provide an opportunity to set the scene for the forthcom-ing week, enabling community announcement of reminders of dates and events as well as acknowledgement of learning success and extra-curricula achievement of our students.

At St Joseph’s, the health and safety of your child is of paramount importance. To assist us in this vital area, we have adopted a new ‘Health, Safety and Electronic Consent Form System’ named CareMonkey. CareMonkey provides an innovative parent controlled electronic medical form for schools with a duty of care. It provides the opportunity to update medical information promptly and accurately whilst providing staff with instant access to the emergency information provided by parents. Parents/Guardians are required to complete their child/ children’s profile once you receive an invitation to join CareMonkey. If you require support please contact the school office.

Child Safety News

This year St Joseph’s have a number of students participating in the Wonthaggi Carols by Candelight which will take place at APEX Park Wonthaggi on Sunday, December 16. Students are required to be there by 7.40 pm.

Students from our school will be involved in reading and role playing scriptural readings as well as singing. Parents are required to attend if your child/children wishes to participate.

2018 Track & Field National success for Baia

This year’s grade 1 Dinner was held on Thursday, November 22.

Everyone was very excited to be able to stay back after school and enjoyed the fantastic weather playing games and the Senior Playground equipment.

A BBQ was served for dinner and home at 6:00pm.

Senior News 5/6 It has been a busy time in the 5/6 neighbourhood with our Year 6 camp to Forest Lodge and the Year 5s travelling into Melbourne for their annual Urban Camp.

While the Year 6 students were in the bush, the Year 5s were learning all about leadership in Mel-bourne and water safety at Inverloch Surf Beach as part of their Open Water Learning Experience.

During Mappen in the 5/6 area we have been very busy creating small products to sell at the Bazaar we are holding next week.

Last week, November 25 & 26 I travelled into Melbourne to compete in the School Sport Australian Nationals. I was there to compete in the 1500 and 800 Track and Field events, hopefully get a personal best result and make some new friends.

My first event was the 1500 where I ran 4th. I received a State Record and a personal best just as I wanted.

Over the next two days I competed in the 800 heat and managed to qualify for the final. I came 5th.

I would like to thank School Sport Australia for a great event and my family for taking me there and cheering me on. Baia Pugh

Junior News - Prep

Open Water Learning Experience

On Wednesday November 28, the Year 5 students travelled to Inverloch surf beach to learn about water safety.

We were split into 4 groups and went boogie boarding, swam with a life jacket on and learnt how to save someone with different objects you might bring to the beach. We also learnt what to do when someone looks hurt or is unconscious and how to assess and perform CPR. It was a great exercise on how to be safe in open waterways.

The Preps have been very busy this term and we can hardly believe that it’s nearing the end of the year and soon they will be in Grade 1.

As part of our inquiry unit Topsy Turvy Tales, students have been working industriously in small groups to create their very own puppet theatres for the fairytales of the Gingerbread Man, The Three Billy Goats Gruff, The Three Little Pigs and Goldilocks and the Three Bears.We are so thrilled with their teamwork skills and the final product. Feel free to pop in and take a look anytime.

As we are nearing the celebration of the birth of Jesus, everyone is learning about the season of Advent and what it means to wait. We are also very excited about the upcoming school concert and can’t wait to sing there songs.

Grade 1 Dinner

Prep Phillip Island Excursion

Year 5 Urban campOn November 19 & 20 the Year 5 students travelled to Melbourne for their Urban Camp. We had great fun visiting lots of places in Melbourne, including Parliament House, Marvel Stadium and The Big Issue.

Ceres Ceres is a large environmental farm. We learnt how much water other countries have and how many people don’t have enough water, how much energy is used to produce food and how much food gets wasted around the world. Our last activity was feeding and playing with the chickens.

Old Melbourne Jail The Old Melbourne Jail was dark and cold. We heard stories of how Ned Kelly died and some of the horrible conditions in the jail. Judges even jailed young children for being homeless. We heard three of the best escape stories.

Melbourne Star Everyone loved the Melbourne Star which presented beautiful views. It was breathtaking. We were grouped in carriages of 10 and It took nearly an hour to go around it. Some people were scared but some were excited.

On Thursday November 15, the Preps travelled to Phillip Island to visit the Penguin Parade. We shared morning tea on the grass then split into the two grades for an information session with a ranger.

After visiting the Penguin Parade, we got back on the bus and travelled to the Wildlife Park near Cowes. Here we ate our lunch then split into small groups and enjoyed a walk around, seeing many Australian animals.

The children had a terrific day and we would like to thank all the parent volunteers that assisted us on the day.

Bel & Trish - Prep Teachers

Year 6 Camp - Forest LodgeLast Monday all Year 6 students headed off to Forest Lodge Farm for their 3 day camp.

The weather held out and everyone enjoyed activities such as archery, bush cooking, the low ropes course, the mud run, raft building challenge and hut building. We had fun playing games on the hay bales and went for a night walk and Team trivia was also fun.
