Dear Parents
Once again, thank you for your enthusiastic support throughout Term 2 at St Joseph’s Tobruk. We wish you a safe and rejuvenating break and look for-ward to working with you next term. FAREWELL – FOR NOW! Tony Barron has been appointed Acting Assistant Principal at Marymount Pri-
mary School at Burleigh Waters for the second half of 2012. Tony is well equipped to handle anything that comes his way in the role of APA at such a
large school. Marymount Primary School is closer to home for Tony and is considered to be a significant promotion, even though his appointment is a fixed term position. Tony replaces the existing APA who has taken up a lec-turing position. Though we will miss him at Joey’s, we wish Tony all the very best and thank him for his contribution to the community of St Joseph’s To-
bruk since 2007. On behalf of Fr Tony Girvan, Parish Priest of Beenleigh, and David Hutton, Executive Director - Brisbane Catholic Education, I am pleased to announce the appointment of Peter Lovegrove to the role of Acting APRE at St Jo-seph’s Tobruk. This appointment will commence on Monday, 9 July, and run
through until Friday, 7 December, 2012. Peter is currently teaching and per-
forming leadership duties at St John Vianney’s Primary School, Manly. Peter brings to the position 24 years of successful teaching experience, most-ly in Catholic schools. He is currently finishing his Educational Leadership Studies and has completed the Leaders of the Future Course and the Out of the Box program.
ATHLETICS CARNIVAL Congratulations to the children for their enthusiastic participation in the school athletics carnival. MacKillop again was the winning team, with Steele coming second and O’Shea third. Many thanks to the staff for their hard work on the day. Special thanks goes to Matthew Armstrong who co-ordinated the
carnival – well done Matt! We also thank the many families who came along
to support the children on the day. We appreciate the support of the Been-leigh Little Athletics Association for the use of the facilities and the canteen provision for parents and friends of Joey’s.

CONGRATULATIONS! Congratulations to Renee Howard and Anthony Green on the birth of son Alexander. Alexander is brother to
James (Yr 2) and David (Possums). Congratulations also to Amanda and Luke Golinski on the birth of Abigal who is a sister to Chelsea (Waterdragons). We wish both families all the very best.
FAREWELL We wish the Roselt and Downing families all the very best as they move to different schools. Best wishes. REPORTS Reports were sent home with the children yesterday. Though all care is taken in their production, with teachers
and admin proof-reading what is written, we still sometimes make mistakes. Please alert us to any error and this will be rectified. Sincere thanks to all of the staff who were part of the team effort of producing the reports. Should parents or teachers require an interview, these can be arranged early next term.
TALENT EXTRAVAGANZA Congratulations to all of the performers who took part in the talent extravaganza on Wednesday! We certainly have so many talented children at Joey’s. It is important also to recognise and applaud the many children who
auditioned but did not make it this time. Keep trying! Sincere thanks to Renuka Haran for her organisation of this annual event. We really enjoy occasions like this because we get to see another side of the children that we would not usually see! And the community gets to see a side of the staff they would not usually see as well!! TALENT EXTRAVAGANZA SPECIAL GUESTS –ONE DIRECTION Alias: Father Tony, David Boulton, Rory McBride, Joshua O’Keeffe and Tony Barron
INSTRUMENTAL CONCERT
Children learning instruments performed yesterday at a short concert in the hall. Congratulations to all of our mu-sicians and to their tutors and to Renuka Haran for her enthusiastic input into all things musical at Joey’s! PLEASE NO PARKING IN TRINITY COLLEGE TRADE TRAINING CENTRE The new car park at the Trade Training Centre has unfortunately become popular with parents who are collecting children from St Joseph’s. Parking is for Trade Training Centre personnel only. As part of the lease agreement
with the two companies who will use the centre, Trinity College has allocated parking to them, so effectively they have paid for them. The use of the centre has already begun and will be in full swing at the start of next term.
On another note regarding the Trade Training Centre, Highway Auto Group from Springwood will be servicing
vehicles there as a satellite service centre with two service bays (hence the need for customer car parking spac-es). Matters in Gray, a Hairdressing training organisation from Mt Gravatt, will be opening their salon and are looking for clients for their qualified hairdresser and senior apprentices to work with in order to build a client base
for our students to commence their course in Term 3. Discounted hair services will be available one day per week, building to more days as the need arises. Please check the newsletter for special offers available to families through the trade training centre.
WOOLWORTHS TOTAL: 12620. This is the same as our final count in 2011. Thank you for your support.

It is a day of mixed emotions for me….again. I am very excited about continuing my journey at Marymount at Bur-
leigh Waters. However, I am feeling very sad about leaving the community of St Joseph’s Beenleigh – I have been
here since 2007, and it is one of those places that holds great memories. I feel very much a part of this community –
which is what makes it hard for me to say goodbye.
Joeys is a special place, and that is due to three special groups of people; the parents, the staff and the children. I wish
to thank all of the people who have helped make my journey over these last 5 ½ years so memorable. A special
thanks to David Boulton for his help, leadership and guidance along the way.
The best part of this school and community….Once a Joey, Always a Joey.
You will all be missed, but not forgotten. Thanks Tony
LEGO MINDSTORMS CHOCOLATE DRIVE
This year the P&F have aimed to do fundraising in a more practical way, such as
tuckshop days, mother’s and father’s day stalls, discos etc. These have been high-
ly successful fundraisers where you as parents have got value for your money, or
the students have received something in return and had some fun also, like at the
disco. And together we have raised funds that will go directly to our children’s
school. For example we have recently donated $600 to cover buses for students
competing in the Catholic Schools Choir Competition and Wakakirri. One project
that St Joseph’s would love to develop is LEGO MINDSTORMS. These are fan-
tastic kits that combine Lego and Robotics and easy to do Computer Programming
and are great fun for kids. Mr McBride and Mrs Hall are keen to run Lego Mind-
storms for Mi Smarts twice a year and also a lunch time club. St Joseph’s can
also enter Lego Mindstorm school competitions where our students compete against other schools with our robots!
Students can also go onto State and National competitions. We would love to see St Joseph’s have these kits that
other schools already have. The cost of these kits is considerable, costing $2,500 for a school set of 8. We would
love to buy Lego Mindstorms for the school but there have always been other priorities to put funds towards like
home readers, or iPads etc. So to get these kits for our kids to have fun with now, we are asking for your help to raise
the funds via our chocolate drive. All money raised from the chocolate drive will go directly towards Lego Mind-
storms kits. We will sincerely value your support.
If you or your children would like to see Lego Mindstorms in action, please take a moment to visit the website mind-
storms.lego.com and watch short movies of what these amazing kits can do.
Have a wonderful break!
It’s already half way into the year, where does the time go? We at the P&F wish students and staff a wonderful and
much deserved break. There are many special parents and their families who sacrifice time to help out. Thank you
to Annette Lahrs and her band of merry helpers for making the Tuck Shop Days very successful. Thanks also to
Katherine Miller for your tireless efforts with grant writing recently, for shade sails and security screens for our
school. Thank you also to Leslie Solar for your hard work with the chocolate drive
Farewell Tony Barron
We would like to offer Mr Barron best wishes at his new school next term. I know I reflect the thoughts of every
parent in saying Mr Barron will dearly missed. Over the past few weeks I’ve had conversations with parents and have
heard many times how saddened people are that you are moving on, perhaps permanently this time. We wish you all
the best in your new position and know you will make a wonderful and positive difference to the lives of students and
parents at your new school, as you have at St Joseph’s.
The Dental Van has arrived and will begin to see students next week by appointment. All students at St Joseph’s will
be invited to visit the dental van. Forms will be issued by year levels. All the year 7 and Prep students have now re-
ceived their forms and should have returned them to the school.
Thank you for your support in the fundraising trip for Olivia Jones.
A sincere thank you to our school community and friends who have helped with purchasing raffle tickets (Art Work),
hot dogs and ice blocks throughout term 2. We have raised $800 towards expenses for our Junior Olympic trip to the
USA. We leave on 24th July and have been training hard to perform at our best. Thanks everyone.
YOUTH GROUP: Frog will resume on July 20.
