4.0 Presidents report
Ken Gannon recognised the support of Barwon water in maintaining the
Zampatti Oval, however acknowledged continuing difficulty in maintaining
the Carey and Noble Street ovals due to water restrictions. This presents one
of the club’s biggest challenges.
The season was generally very successful for the club, with the First XI and
Fourth XI making the finals, the Second XI winning the premiership and the
Third XI being runner up.
Ken congratulated David Morgan, Daniel Fanning and Peter Cramp on the
achievements of the playing group over the season.
Special mention was also made of Andrew Hodgeson’s achievements in being
selected in the country week side and winning the batting average. Michael
Jaques was also congratulated for his success in winning the GCA fourths
batting average.
The president mentioned that the club is in a solid financial position. One of
the challenges to be undertaken before next season will be to upgrade the
practice wickets.
Bar sales continue to perform strongly, thanks largely to the work of Michael
Slater.
The cricket club has also committed financial support to the SJC gymnasium
appeal.
Thanks were also given to Felicity McFarlane for organising the afternoon
teas, and Barry McFarlane and Mark Stein for their efforts around the club.
Congratulations were offered to Rick Humphrey on his being awarded life
membership to the club.
The GCA has ranked St Josephs Cricket Club second behind East Belmont for
the current season, and third on a three year average score.
5.0 Coaches Report
David Morgan’s coach’s report was tabled. Appreciation for David’s efforts
and the assistance provided by other team members who assisted in improving
the club’s performance.
6.0 Treasurer’s Report
In summary the club’s cash surplus on operations for the past year is
$3,186.81. This leaves the club with a bank balance of $22,835.03 – a very
strong position.
The operating profit of $14,206 for the year (before capital expenditure)
enabled the club to substantially improve its facilities during the year. This
included the purchase and reconditioning of a cylinder mower, upgrade of the
practice wicket, replace the club barbeque and top dress Zampatti oval. It also
enabled the club to provide financial support to the SJC gymnasium appeal.
Recognition should be given to the effort of Reg Dean, who drove
membership to a total collection of $15,742, and Michael Slater who helped
the bar raise $17,156, another great effort.
The college provided assistance in purchasing new air conditioning for the
clubrooms.
A motion to accept the report was moved and passed.
Moved: Peter Cramp Seconded: Barry McFarlane.
7.0 Committee Nominations and Elections
All committee members renominated except for Reg Dean, who will not be on
the committee for the new season, but who will continue to provide assistance
around the club, and Keith Bishop, who has relocated away from Geelong.
A suggestion was made that Denis Davie fill the role as secretary with Robert
Threlfall filling the role of Junior Coordinator.
Recognition was made of the need to grow the committee with new members.
The current president may step down in another year’s time, and this is an
opportunity for someone to join the committee and learn the role.
8.0 General Business
Reiterating Carey Oval remains a major problem, due to water restrictions.
GCA matters include that Kookaburra balls will be used next season, in place
of Platypus balls, and there is talk of a Twenty 20 competition being
introduced.
Newcomb cricket club will be replaced by Manifold Cricket Club in GCA
Division 1 next season.
Feedback regarding the make-up of the 2009/2010 season:
Players want a mixture of 1 and 2-day games.
There is talk of a twenty 20 competition
Regarding the options of a final-six or a final-four, STCC
recommended a final-six. This will be decided by the GCA
management committee.
SJCC would like to see the GCA stick with the formal of the GCA
presentation night, which was very good.
Robert Agg has resigned as GCA president, and Grant Dew will likely
replace him.
The Junior Board has advised the junior age groups will remain the
same as they currently are. There make-up of the junior committee
will change significantly, as there has been a significant spill of
members.
SJCC will look to encourage use of its website, which is now of a very good
standard. More information will be made available on the website, for
example an invitation to the AGM. Appreciation was expressed for Andrew
Carmody’s work in upgrading and maintaining the website.
The meeting was completed at 8.18 PM.
President’s Annual Report 2009/10 Season
Hopefully to a good representation of Club Members at our Annual General Meeting I am
pleased to present the annual report with the club continuing in a very stable position both
financially and with great player numbers.
Last season at this time I noted the challenges we faced with the water restrictions making it
difficult for us to maintain our venues. Whilst water at least in the short term is more available
we continue to face challenges compared to other GCA Clubs. Barwon Water has been very fair
in supporting Geelong sporting groups, especially those like us that fall under the banner of the
City of Greater Geelong. We certainly appreciate that fair consideration.
For those who play and travel around Geelong the improvements to many Division One venues
can be seen and they are great for those clubs and cricket in general. As a non CoGG venue we
will not be upgraded in the same way and must make our own plans to ensure that our venue is to
the highest standard possible. Actions in partnership with St Josephs College are the only option
for us and we have already seen the improvements last season to see that it can be done to a high
level and for all grounds.
Other actions on the playing surfaces were
The final sections of new couch grass were laid on the turf wicket area.
Sandy topsoil was placed over Zampatti Oval pre season and Carey Oval pre Christmas
and this saw much improved results for the grass cover. SJC is also looking to do this in
the future for Noble St Oval.
Work undertaken by Jason Stein including weed spraying, soil tests for correct
application of fertilizers and aeration of Zampatti Oval were a great help.
On field results were a mixed bag as David Morgan will speak of in his report but the Club did
make finals in 5 of the 6 senior grades we participate in. Our Junior teams were not as successful
but do continue to provide many junior players to the senior club sections. Our In2Cricket Milo
program continues to be a strong base for the club.
Congratulations to all teams on their finals performances. The firsts beating Grovedale but failing
to overcome Lara was a disappointment to all. The Seconds completed a great victory to become
back to back Premiers defeating Grovedale in a tight match. Other finalists were our Fourths and
Fifth teams but they ran into a couple of inform opposition teams but never the less had great
years.
I would like to express our collective thanks to the leadership group who work to get our teams on
the field each week. Special thanks to David Morgan who together with the other Captains and
Daniel Fanning have set the path for us to improve as a club. Especially I would like to thank
Chairman of Selectors Peter Cramp who completes his task of selecting sides with all the comings
and goings of players each week.
The challenge for us all is how to recognize or measure the success of a club. Clearly we want that
long awaited First XI Premiership but in that team success we must not lose Club success. At one
level that could be the GCA Club Championship which cannot be one without strong performances
from all teams. Or is the GCA Promotion and Relegation Rankings in which we are Number 3 and
we should aim to be No.1 But what else do we measured ourselves by.
Financial stability
Spirit of doing something together
Respecting for those around the club
Welcoming new people to the clubs both players and families.
On the individual playing side I congratulate all the Club award winners and especially those that
have achieved GCA Awards. Of special note
Daniel Fanning winning the Jack Sing Medal and GCA Champion Player Awards for a
truly great season with bat and ball. Daniel’s dedication and drive to see us succeed as a
Premiership team hopefully can be realized very soon.
GCA winners Adam Shawcross (2nds Bowling), Tim Bailey (3rds Batting), Michael
Jaques (4ths Batting), Greg Shawcross (4ths Bowling)
In regards to player contribution to this Club we also recognize Damien Foster playing his 100th
First XI game. His batting record stands at the highest level with any player who has played for the
Club. Especially highest average for those players achieving 2000 First XI runs as well as most
centuries and batting awards. Hopefully Damien will continue to add to his contributions with us.
Our treasurer Chris McFarlane will present the finance report to the meeting, but it is most
important for all members to understand the results and position of the club.
In addition to the normal Treasurer’s Report we have again prepared a 5 year analysis of what
has happened at the club. Please note the growth in activity since we have made the building
extensions. When compared to 6 years ago the movement in our business is very noticeable and
makes us a very viable cricket club in the GCA.
Again the Club received a high assessment from the GCA and is affiliated in Division 1 for the
2009-10 Season. The GCA assessment is conducted now over a 3(was5) year rolling average and
under such a system the club has a secure future in Div 1. But as with Newtown and Geelong
City this year we cannot take our position for granted.
Often the regular contributors can be taken for granted in a club, this should not be so in our
Club, I would especially like to acknowledge,
Felicity McFarlane for the tremendous effort in making and arranging the Club’s weekly
afternoon tea.
Barry for all the wicket preparation and all the little things that need to be done around the
place.
Peter Cramp as Chairman of Selectors
Reg Dean for not only being the world’s greatest registrar but also for the weekly efforts on
the BBQ especially at Milo and Saturday morning room preparation.
Rick Humphrey and Tim Bye for leading a social group and always going that yard further
to help the club.
To the players lead by Andrew Hodgson in Milo Cricket thank you very much. To Andrew
Casey, Jack O’Donoghue, Kristian Bole, Sam Murphy and Michael Linsley (now back in
England) thank you very much.
To all the players who helped in the junior and Milo areas thank you.
o Rosters in helping at Friday Milo are very important. If all teams supported the roster like
the fifths life would be easier.
o Junior Development training was a renewed program by David and all the senior player
who helped it was much appreciated.
Robyn for all the work revolving around Milo Cricket as well as the band of helpers
especially Katrina, Michael, Felicity and David who attended each week.
There is no submission to the Annual Meeting for Life Membership or for a player reaching the
250 games required for the Shane Fitzgerald Club, which only goes to show how hard they are to
get and so should be treasured by us all.
A full list is attached of those who have achieved the Club honors.
Finally through the English cricket connections of David Morgan we were able to host Michael
Linsley to the club for the whole season. Michael did become a First XI player for the club but
his form dropped off as the season took its toll. But as noted above Michael was active around
the club especially helping in our Milo program. I would especially like to thank those families
who helped us accommodate Michael during his stay. To Robyn, David and Marian Buckey and
to Anne-Louise O’Donoghue and the O’Donoghue family we appreciate the support you gave
Michael and the club. Not forgetting Harry Grace at Road Runner Autos for employing Michael
and trying to teach him to drive.
So all in all the Committee is pleased to present the Annual Report to the members as one that
sees the club in good position to move forward. We are sure first eleven successes will come if
we move forward from a solid base, but that success must be with the entire club not at the
expense of the club. We believe the club is in that position now.

Captain-Coaches Annual Report Season 2009-10.
On pure statistics it would appear on the surface the club has not made any further progress from
the previous season. While again the 1st XI fell at the Semi Final stage the 2nd XI once again
showed great qualities in winning Back to Back Premierships.
Yes the results of the 1sts and 2nds were the same as the year before the continued improvement
from most of the playing group places the club in a good position in the years ahead.
One of the highlights for me as Captain/Coach has seen the development of a number of our
younger players who can become genuine GCA cricketers for a long period of time and lead the
club to future success.
Sam Farnsworth had a breakout year winning the Bowling Average, the club’s Most Improved
Player award, along with performance of the Year in taking 6 wickets in the 1st Final vs
Grovedale. In doing so he proved he is and will become a big game player, and for mine he sits
comfortably alongside the top echelon of bowlers in the GCA.
Along with Sam we saw the emergence of Brendan Wemyss in the 2nd Half of the season, Jack
O’Donoghue stand up in a number of games pre - xmas to suggest he will have a bright 1st XI
future, Andrew Casey make his 1st XI Debut as well winning the club’s Junior Cricketer of the
Year Award and represent the Barwon Rockets in the Under 18 Competition. Adding to these
players I am encouraged by the continued development of Jonathon Casey, Alex Bowles and
Andrew Tozer.
Daniel Fanning had an incredible season with both bat and ball culminating in winning the
GCA’s Jack Sing Medal as well as claiming the Club Champion Award. His 169 vs Geelong
West was a truly great knock an innings I’m sure would rank among the best ever at Zampatti
Oval. Daniel has been a fantastic support to me both on and off the field and I thank him for that.
To have the 2nd XI win Back to Back Premierships for mine is a great achievement. It suggests
we have a fantastic crop of players (as mentioned earlier) who are ready to take the next step and
the manner in which they played throughout the finals series shows we have players hungry for
success.
The 2nd XI was superbly led by Tim Bye in his first season in the role and there is no doubt the
club has a fantastic leader in the making. Tim like Daniel was a brilliant support for me
throughout the season and his preparation for games leaves no stone unturned.
Along with Daniel and Tim I must thank Chairman of Selectors and 3rd XI Captain Peter Cramp
for his wonderful support also. People like Peter Cramp don’t grow on trees and his passion for
the club’s cause is something I really do appreciate. As well I must also thank the efforts of Chris
McFarlane 4th XI and Oliver Buckley 5th XI as their devotion, passion and love for the club
comes to the fore in their roles.
As mentioned before while it was only the 2nd XI that took home Premiership Glory many
fantastic individual and team performances took place throughout the season. Some worth
mentioning were:
Daniel Fanning 169 vs Geelong West
Sam Farnsworth 6/36 vs Grovedale 1st Final
Troy Nolan 56 vs Bell Post Hill in winning Run Chase
Brendan Wemyss 56no vs Grovedale in 2nd XI Grand Final
Adam Shawcross 7/33 vs Leopold in 2nd XI Outright Victory and 141 vs Lara
Tim Bailey 129no vs East Belmont 3rds
Phil Bishop 104no vs South Barwon 4ths Semi Final in 20 overs
Greg Shawcross 5/12 vs Grovedale 4ths Semi Final
There are a number of people that must be thanked as without these people the players would not
be able to play the game they love in a fantastic environment that St Joeys creates.
Barry McFarlane cannot be thanked any more for his tireless work on the wicket, ground and
nets preparation. Along with these tasks he takes the role of 1st XI Manager, scorer and anything
else he sees fit to cut his teeth into.
Paul Foster as Scorer/Manager who does his role diligently with a minimum of fuss is someone I
am grateful for without a doubt.
Felicity McFarlane who provides the afternoon Teas, once again Ranked No. 1 by St Joeys and
visiting team alike.
David Buckley for preparing Dinners on Thursday night we thank you.
Reg Dean and Mick Slater for there passionate and ongoing support.
And Finally to Ken Gannon and the entire Committee. Ken does an extraordinary amount of
work at the cricket club and as an entire playing group we are indebted to the efforts he puts into
our club.
2009/10 has no doubt been a successful season for the club. All sides bar one played Finals
cricket and we were able to bring the 2nd XI Premiership back to the club. Everyone associated
with the club are striving to get better and make the club and even better place and with the
players and the type of people we have at St Joeys I get the feeling some exciting times are on
the horizon.
