August 9, 2015 Nineteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time

Dear Parishioners and Friends:

The people started grumbling about Jesus be-

cause he said: “I am the bread that came down from

heaven.” John 6:41

Saint Bonaventure is often called the second

founder of the Franciscans because he took the insights

of St. Francis and explained them to us. Most memora-

ble for me is his simple analysis of how we see things

in three ways. The “eye of the flesh” is our empirical

world of hands-on experience. This way is how most

people see things through their senses. The second way

is through the “eye of the mind” that sees cause and

effect relationships and understands why things work

the way they do. But the third way of seeing is beyond

logic. “The eye of the heart” sees what is essential and

what is given through faith. This humble way of seeing

trusts in the revelations of God at every turn in life.

The “third eye” sees the story of God with us

and recognizes what and who gives us life. This way of

seeing in faith accepts Jesus as bread from heaven,

nourishing us and directing our hearts toward the truth.

But those who murmur that Jesus is just the carpenter’s

kid and nobody special have not yet come to faith in

him. Each time we read the scripture we are invited to

see with the eyes of our hearts, to encounter Jesus and

be fed by him.

Question for the week: How do the scriptures in

the Liturgy of the Word help your “eye of the flesh” and

your “eye of the mind” to open up and behold with the

“eye of the heart” the real presence of Christ in the Eucha-

rist? How does your partaking of the “bread of life”

strengthen you for your life’s journey?

9 de Agosto, 2015 Domingo Diecinueve en el

Tiempo Ordinario Queridos Feligreses y Amigos:

The Pictorial Directory: On August 16 at 10 AM, before the Bi-lingual Mass, we need the various liturgical ministers to please come to church early so that we can have group photos for the directory. The only group shot already done is the Choir. That Sunday is also an RCIA Rite of Welcome Sunday at 11 AM so we shall be having luncheon after Mass. Please remember to prepare some food to share as we welcome newcomers to our parish family.

Stewardship is how we try to reflect on life in a spirituali-ty of gratitude, a way of seeing all things as gift and how we can share most creatively what we have in order to thank God and serve him best.
