The SJS Middle School Academic Team will begin practicing the week of August 21. Practice will be held weekly every Monday from approximately – 4:15-6:15 PM in the library/classroom. Any 6th, 7th, 8th grader that is

interested is welcome to join the team. This year the team will be competing in the weekly NKAL(Northern Kentucky Academic League) matches, in the Governor’s Cup competition, and in a number of other tournaments around the state. Currently, we have very few 6th Graders on the team, and if this remains the case, then we may not be able to have a dedicated 6th Grade Team this year (we will have JV and Varsity teams). If you have questions, please contact Andy & Melissa Strange via e-mail ([email protected]) or by phone (859-426-1901). Robotics Team Is your 5th - 8th grader interested in being a member of the SJS robotics team? If you’re not familiar with FLL (First LEGO League) here’s a quick summary: Every year First LEGO League releases a challenge, which is based on a real-world scientific topic. Each challenge has three parts: the Project, the Robot Game, and the Core Values. Teams of up to 5 children with at least 2 adult coaches, participate in the challenge by building and programming an autonomous robot to score points on a themed playing field (Robot Game), developing a solution to a problem they have identified that relates to the yearly topic (Project), all guided by the First LEGO

League Core Values. Teams then attend an official tournament held at a local middle school. We are fortunate enough to have 4 EV3 robot kits at SJS which means we could have up to 4 teams of 5 members each with two parent coaches. Mrs. Schneider, who has coached the robotics team in the past, is happy to meet with any parent who may be interested in coaching a team to explain a little more about the process. Parents do not need to have any programming or engineering experience! Students pick up the programming very quickly. Teams should start meeting and practicing once a week by the end of August or early September. If your child is interested in participating and you are willing to be a coach, email Laura Schneider at [email protected] Drama Club Attention All Curtain Call Cavaliers! We will be having a short meeting on Tuesday August 29th from 2-3pm in Mrs. Arlinghaus' homeroom (3B) for any interested Junior High students. We will be announcing the play at this meeting and listening to some of the songs. We will also be passing out rehearsal and performance schedules again. Hope to see so many of you there! Cavalier Call News Thanks to the amazing support of our St. Joseph School families and friends, we have been able to do several things with the funds raised at Cavalier Call and we wanted to share the good news! Five Clever Touch Boards were purchased to replace smart boards that were no longer operable. These boards are amazing! .... they are 65 inch interactive androids hanging in the classrooms. The teachers are thrilled to have them, and look forward to using them daily. The salaries of an additional part time academic support teacher and a part time art teacher were funded. Ms. Mary Beth Endicott will be supporting our junior high teachers and students and Mr. Adam Schmidt will be teaching art to all grades as well as moderating the art club for grades 6-8. A portion of the proceeds were given to the tuition assistance program, plans for improvements to playground equipment are being discussed and the Solar Eclipse Glasses that all students were given on Monday August 21st were purchased with Cavalier Call funds. Again, thank you to everyone who attended and supported Cavalier Call!

the  After  School  Program  for  2.5  hours  per day, beginning at 2 p.m.

There are occasions when a paid sub will be needed  for  the  After  School  Program.  This could  occur  as  the  result  of  a  planned  or unplanned  absence.    The  program  operates from  2‐6  p.m.  each  school  day,  and  would require the sub to be on‐site for that time, as well  as  for  setup  beforehand  and  cleanup afterwards.

If you would be interested in helping with either of  these  needs,  please  contact  Mrs.  Nancy Hayden  at  859‐250‐1075  for  additional information.
