August 2, 2015 Eighteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time

Dear Parishioners and Friends: “Amen, amen, I say to you, you are looking for me not because you saw signs but because you ate the loaves and were filled. Do not work for food that per-ishes but for the food that endures for eternal life, which the Son of Man will give you.” John 6:26

The crowd in today’s gospel goes looking for Jesus expecting to see more miracles performed and an endless supply of food for them to eat. They do not real-ize that Jesus is not talking about their physical being. He is talking about the spiritual lives of the crowds. Our society today resembles the crowd that was following Jesus. Society puts a huge emphasis on being enter-tained, looking good, and feeling good, but forgets that the spiritual self is more important than the physical self.

When the spirit is sick, the sickness can be man-ifested in a physical illness. Look at the “beautiful and famous” in our society: they have everything they can want: all the money, fame, power, and beauty. But how many times do we hear about them having to go to re-hab because of drugs or alcohol abuse? What they are missing is the food that Jesus promises us in today’s gospel. The Bread of Life! The nourishment of our souls not just our bodies. Physical beauty is fleeting and will soon fail but the soul is eternal.

At Mass we are fed both with the Word and with real bread. Just as Jesus taught the people nourish-ing their souls, we too get nourished through the liturgy of the Word and we are fed with the Bread of Life when we celebrate the Eucharist. Jesus gave us both the Word and the Eucharist to feed and sustain us in difficult times. Come celebrate and be fed!!

Question for the week: As you come to Mass what stops you from being fed by both the word and the real presence of Christ in the Eucharist?

Live Jesus in your hearts!!!! Deacon Ron

Today we thank God for Deacon Ron’s two years of dedicated ministry with our parish. He was ordained here on June 7, 2013. His presence in ministry was able to touch many lives. Let’s let him know how he made a difference. May this time of transition in his diaconal ministry to St. Paul's be a blessing for him.

Parish Pastoral Council elections: Who would you like to nominate to run for the Council? We need 3 new candi-dates to serve for the next three years. We thank Jim Craig and Juan Lopez for their service to the Council as they step down in September. Who would you like to step up and serve? Please submit nominees to Fr. Bob or Ken Jorishie. Parish Council Elections will be held the weekends of Au-gust15-16 & 22-23 at all the Masses. Deadline for nomina-tions is Sunday, August 9. [Please see the new bulletin board for minutes from the Pastoral Council Meeting.]

  • St. Joseph’s Catholic Church The Pictorial Directory: On August 16 at 10 AM, before the Bi-lingual Mass, we need the various liturgical ministers to please come to church early so that we can have group photos for the di-rectory. The only group shot already done is the Choir. That Sunday is also an RCIA Rite of Welcome Sunday at 11 AM so we shall be having luncheon after Mass. Please remember to pre-pare some food to share as we welcome newcomers to our parish family.

Thank you, thank you! To those who have ben so especially faithful this summer in your contributions, because things have been so financially “tight” and we are almost scraping by! Our Finance Council meeting with our Diocesan auditor went very well even though we only barely were “in the black” this year. This September will be Stewardship Month and we will be hearing more about exactly where we stand with a presentation of the financial year in review on September 19-20. Gracias, gracias!

Warning, Warning! Those who are parked in the fire lane on either side of the entrance driveway may be ticketed and have their cars towed if they park there. It is AGAINST the LAW! PLEASE do NOT PARK there! Cuidado, Cuidado!

SUGGESTION BOX: The Parish Council realizes that parishioners don’t know where to connect their insights and ideas to our representatives and maybe use their ideas for the betterment of the parish. So there is a SUGGES-TION BOX in the Foyer of the Church for this purpose. Wanna change something? Tell us how. Wanna give a compliment, put in your suggestions!

Ushers/Ministers of Hospitality: We are grateful for those who take up the collections for us and hand out missals. As they welcome us to church and help us prepare to bring the offertory gifts forward, let us be aware that we need more adults to assist in this ministry of hospitality.
