The Alumni Association of St. Jo­seph’s Hospital School of Nursing pre­sented Miss Grace Mary Stenberg, School Registrar, with their first honorary membership in the Association, on May 24, I96I, beginning their annual mem­bership drive.

Miss Stenberg first began her duties at the School of Nursing in 1943, and during her 17 years as Registrar has matriculated 777 students, keeping in close contact with them throughout their three years as students and after graduation.The honorary membership was presented

by Mrs. John Poppingo, President of the Alumni Association, and Mrs. L. C. Han- raham, chairman of the current member­ship drive.

INTENSIVE CARE UNIT OPENSSt. Joseph’s is proud of the new

intensive care unit which has recently opened in Room 300. Miss Mary Ann Don­ahue, 1953 graduate of St. Joseph’s, is Head Nurse of the unit. Physical facil­ities have been added to the room to enable the efficient staff to give ex­cellent care to patients who require constant supervision.

Members of St. Joseph’s Hospital Medical Staff elected Dr. John D, Hartigan as President for 1961. Other officers include JohnE. Courtney, M.D., - Vice President; Robert Hawkins, M.D., Secretary; Robert J. Fitzgibbons, M.D., Treasurer; Maurice C. Howard and Wil­liam M, Clark, Members at Large.

Dr. Hartigan served as President of the staff during i960, assuming duties following the resignation early last year of Earl A. Connolly for reason of health.

NATIONWIDE PUBLICITY

The Maternity Department Staff Mem­bers are proud of the nationwide publi­city which new facilities of the new­born nursery and remodeled department have received in the December issue of the R.N, magazine. Seven full pages of story and pictures tell of extensiveremodeling and revision of procedures which took place in 1959* St. Joseph’s was one of the first in the Midwest to comply with the latest directives of the Academy of Pediatrics in care of newborns.

X-RAY TECHNICIAN DIES

Sister M. Liberia Kozjan, O.S.F., former Chief X-Ray Technologist, died in December. She had been in retire­ment in Lincoln since 1956 when ill health forced her to relinquish her duties. Sister Liberia established the St. Joseph’s Hospital School of X-Ray Technology in 1920, one of the earliest in the country.

NEW SPEECH AND HEARING DEPARTMENT

A new Speech and Hearing Departmenthas been added to the . remodeled First Middle. The area is conveniently lo­cated to enable better facilities for the patients with eye, ear, nose, and throat diseases who are admitted to First Middle.

ATTRACTIVE FURNISHINGS IN LOWER LOBBY

Members of the Hospital’s Maintenance Crew are well into their job of creating a new patient-visitor waiting area in the lower Lobby, adjoining the Deep Therapy X-Ray treatment rooms and of­fice* A portion of this lobby will be designated by furniture-divisions for the use of patients awaiting treatments.

Nearly finished is the Philippine mahogany paneling covering the lower portion of the walls. New light fix­tures, writing desks for patients and visitors and additional furniture will also be added. Also being remodeled are the treatment rooms and the office which will be paneled and have new sup­ply cabinets installed.

IMPROVEMENTS IN PEDIATRICS

The Pediatrics Department receiveda face-lifting during I960. Improve­ments included air conditioning; ad­ditional sinks; painting and redecora­ting; new medicine, admitting, and con­ference rooms; new lights; and nurses’ lounge. The premature nursery shared in the new look.

OFFICERS ELECTED

Miss Patricia Arndt was installed as new President of the St. Joseph’s Hos­pital School of Nursing Alumni Associa­tion. Mrs, Ann Poppingo, Vice Presi­dent; Miss Phyllis Dreier, Treasurer; and Miss Mary Ann Donahue, Secretary, were also present for the installation tea held January 15. New board members include Mrs.Mary Amato, Miss Mary Alice Jenkins, Miss Jean Litzen, and Miss Claire Williams*

Mrs. Poppingo stepped into the du­ties of the President within a few days as Mrs. Arndt’s husband received a sud­den transfer. Miss Mary Alice Jenkins will assume the role of Vice President.

Patty McKenna, Mary Kay Marron, Anne Kirchner, and Jan Schaeffer will receive their B.S. degrees this spring.

Both Sharon Suing and Anne Kirchner have set June 17 as their wedding date.

Marie Johnson, Jane Holzworth, and Karol Smith are working at Stanford Hospital; Karol in Obstetrics, Jane in Pediatrics, and Marie in Intensive Care. The girls hope to be back in Omaha by July 1st.

The Rericha’s (Donna Annis) have a new 'son, John Jr., born December 16, i960. Dr, John has a new office at 7310 Maple. Donna is not working.

The Wahle’s (Jan Wagner) have two boys, Steven 20 months, and Greg 6 months. Jan writes us that Marilyn and Don Wald have two boys now, and Mary Francis (Carnazzo) Dunn has a new little girl.

Ellen Morris is an instructor at Cardinal Glennon Children’s Memorial Hospital in St. Louis. She sends her best regards to everyone.

Cathy (Sweeney) Rainforth has moved from Akron, Colorado, to a farm near Conway, Iowa.

Laura (Henkel) VanderMeer is not working at present but enjoys just being a housewife and re-doing old fur­niture. The VanderMeer’s are planning a three week vacation and business trip to Chicago.

The Zoucha’s (Lorraine Rutten) have a son born October 23, I960.

News from Vandee, Ken, and Kevin VanderMeer. Ken starts in his second year radiology residency in July, Van- dee is expecting a new arrival in August.

Mrs. Joan (Bonnemier) Vlack has re­tired from nursing for the time being and is'at home with 10^ month old son Steven, awaiting another wee one in May. Husband, Chuck, will graduate from Creighton Medical School and will interne at St. Catherine’s Hospital.

Shirley Plumer is getting married April 15 to Ronald Erickson. Shirley and Ronald will be living in Topeka, Kansas, where he will be working for Convair Astronautics.

Mrs. Joan (Wenzl) Uhlik with husband and three children, Denny, Chris, and Michele have moved' to Joan’s hometown, Greenleaf, Kansas. Her husband owns the local barber shop.

Mrs. Mary Scott (Hadly) Crowell is living at 2989 Krameria Street in Den­ver, Colorado. They have two daughters, Anne 20 months, and Helen 1 month. Husband Walt works in Claims Department of Travelers Insurance.

Mrs. Mary Beth (McGill) Rock is liv­ing in France where husband, Dick, is stationed'with the Army. They have one son, Mark, age one year.

Ginny Webb is working in surgery at St, Joseph’s Hospital in Denver.Mrs. MArilyn (Taft) Bauer and husband

welcomed Paula Marilyn into the family March 1. She joins 31 month old Mark and year old Maureen.

Mrs. Carol (Gibbs) Dugan is living in Omaha. The Dugan’s have three children, Kevin 2 years, Kelley 1 year, and Jerry III 5 months. Daddy is a golf professional since last May at Cedar Hills - Miracle Hill Golf Course.

Theodora Horn has recently returned from Bogota, Columbia, where she spent 15 months doing lay apostolate work for the Young Christian Workers, She has been working at St. Joseph’s since her return to Omaha.

Patricia Shannon has been working with the Visiting Nurses Association in Omaha since receiving her B.S.N. from Creighton University last June.

Mrs, Phyllis (Yindrick) Byers and Joe welcomed a son into their Dea Moines home December 11.

Rita (Schram) Ramm’s husband is self-employed as a carpenter-contractor. She is not working as they are expec­ting another little one in one month to join two girls, ages and 16 months.

Mary (Dunn) Cranny is working in the Premature Nursery at St. Joseph’s Hospital. Her husband is between jobs at present. They have two girls, Peggy 3 years, and Karen l| years,

Elaine (Buechter) Orr’s husband is attending Nebraska University in Civil Engineering. She is head nurse in an orthopedic ward at St. Elizabeth’s Hos­pital. They have no children.

Anna Mae (Minarick) Eikmeier and her husband live on a farm near Dodge, Ne­braska, with their two children, Mary Beth 2 years old, and Patricia Ann born on September 29, I960.

Between caring for Sandra age 2^, and David 1^, and having her tonsils out at St. Joseph’s on March 23, Rita (Cepuran) Jones has been working part- time nights as float at Jennie Edmund- sen Hospital in Council Bluffs.

Helen (Bodlak) Hanzel has been working part-time in the recovery room at Henry Ford Hospital where Bud is finishing his residency in anesthesi­ology in July. Then they will probably go to the Air Force for two years and settle in Oregon or Colorado after that. They have one child, Karl, who will be a year old in May.

Patricia Jensen is working in surgery out in California doing mostly eye cases. She is also going to school three nights a week.

Julie (Rowe) Schulte has been working in the office of Drs. Grier, Heywood, Doolittle, and Luby for almost four years. Her husband works for Weideman Heating Company and goes to school two nights a week at Tech. They have no children.

Leila (Hansen) Petersen’s husband, Phil, is a credit reporter for Dun and' Bradstreet with his office in Kansas City, Missouri, She is not working professionally right now, but did work nights in Psychiatry in Topeka while they lived there. Now she has gone quite domestic with knitting, cooking, • and collecting recipes. She is also kept busy with their children, Kirk 31 months old, and Julie 'Ann 13 months old. Besides all this, she and her husband are quite active in the West- wood Lutheran Church.

Mary Ann Schuele is working for Dr. J. W, Monsour, a surgeon who interned at St. Joseph’s in 1945# She writes she has become a real ski enthusiast and is really enjoying the single life.

Becky (Sheldon) and Bob Kalez have two sons, David nearly two years old, and John Robert five months old. Bob is in his third year of a four year urology residency at the University of Oregon Medical School, He is now af­filiating at Veterans Hospital, and they are looking forward to his going into private practice sometime in July, 1962. Becky is not working profes­sionally at the present time.

Angela (Fujii) Ramin’s husband is a photo engraver. They have three chil­dren, Mary Ellen 27 months, Bobby 16 months, and Janie 4 months. Angie is not working at present.

We’ve learned that Shirley (Shald) Chaney and her husband are living in North Little Rock, Arkansas. Her hus­band is employed by the State Highway and she is working in the emergency room at the Baptist Hospital. They have no children.

Mary Ann (Waszak) Shotkoski’s hus­band is working for the Corn States Laboratories, and she has been doing some extra typing, etc. at home. They have ’ two lively children, Tommy two years, and Patrick 14 months. Her father passed away rather suddenly last October, and she and her' family are living with her mother now*

Charlotte (Miildoon) Hakel is working 3-11 on third middle at St. Joseph’s, and is the mother of three fine boys, Mark 3 in June, Mike 2 in August, and Ralph Steven 5 months. Her husband is employed by Western Electric.

Ann (Yocum) Watke has a new daugh­ter, Susan Michelle. Their other chil­dren are Fred age 4, and Kathy age 3« The Watke’s are in Germany.

Elaine Zelinger is engaged to Dave Mack. They plan to be Married in June.

Rita (Sears) Mockus is now living in Oakland, California, where Vic is in­terning at Navy Hospital. They expect a new addition in April.

Helen (Hall) Kenney is back in Omaha and working part-time at St. Joseph’s. Other 1956 classmates working at St. Joseph’s are Mary Conrad, Rosemary Cranny, Tish O’Connor, Elaine Zelinger, Beverly Moeller, Ann Poppingo, Char­lotte Hakel, and Mary Cranny.

Colleen (Stutesman) Hohn and Bill have a daughter, Kathryn Marie, born in January. They live in Louisville, Ken­tucky.

Jeanette (Lechner) Semin, Frank, and daughter Ann have built a new home in Bellevue. Frank is in practice of den­tistry at Beverly Hills Plaza in Omaha.

The Lammer’s (Annette Semper) are living in St. Louis. They have two girls, Katherine Marie 17 months, and Margaret Ann 5 months. Annette is not working at the present time.

Sonja (Sevon) Heng and her family are now living in Nebraska City - their new address is S20 12th Avenue. Leo is now assistant sales manager for Allied Chemical Corporation. The Hengs have 3 children, Stephen 3 years, Thomas 2 years, and Christopher 10 months.

The Geha’s (Mary Ann Harmsen) now have three children. Mary Ann extends a welcome and hello to anyone who is in Kansas City.

Margie writes that her sister Marilyn was married April 3. Marilyn graduated in 1960. Their younger sister, Donna, is a freshman at St. Joseph’s.

Mary Helen (Borer) Strudl has moved to Grand Island, Nebraska, where her husband Leonard is employed. They have 2 daughters.

Ann Therese joined the Kavalec household in Queen’s Village, New York, in February. Mother Sally (Murphy) and Daddy Norm have two other girls.

Mhureen Elizabeth joined brother Andy in March. They are the children of Charlotte (Christy) and Bryan Lee.

Donna (Wright) Alexander writes they are busy building a new home in California. Husband, Gene, is doing most of the building. Son Paul is now one year old.

LuAnn (Trusty) Huber and Bill live in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, where Bill works for American Motors. They and their five children like the city very much. LuAnn plans to begin work­ing one night a week in the Labor and Delivery department at McKenna Hospital. Oldest son, Jeff, is in kindergarten.

Loretta (Thiele) Lincoln and Bill welcomed a third daughter into their home in February. They also have one boy. The Lincoln’s are living in Le- vittown. New York.

Rosemary (Peetz) Thomas and LaVerne added number five to their family tree in January. The two boys are outnum­bered with the arrival of the third girl.

Valerie Peter will change her name on April 15 to Mrs. Charles Duffy. Valerie has been working at Mercy Hos­pital in Council Bluffs since finishing anesthesia in the fall.

Mary Kay (O’Neill) Fagan added the new last name on February 11. They are living near Washington, D.C., where husband Chris is a Lieutenant in the Navy.

Sally (Bloomberg) Messbarger writes that they welcomed a new son, Merrill Fredrick (Mickey) into their Kearney, Nebraska, home on March 26. He joins two brothers and one sister. She is planning to come in for the banquet,

Mary (Vanderheiden) Chase and Joe have two daughters, Sue, age 1, Kathy age 2|. Joe is finishing his second year of teaching at Monroe Jr. High in Benson. He attends Omaha U. night school working on his Master’s degree, Mary works two or three nights a week in Special Care at Methodist Hospital.

JoAnne (Gass) Kuelbs has a new daughter, Amy Lynn born October IB, i960. This makes 3 girls and 1 boy for JoAnne and Tom, They now live in Anoka, Minnesota,

Pat (Malady) Chesley and Marv wel­comed a boy into their family of 4 girls on December 9. The son has been named Steven Carl,

Rosa Lee (Raymond) Byrnes and Pat have two boys and one girl since De­cember 10 when Michael joined them at their home in Harlan, Iowa.

Pat (Kessinger) and Lyle Heineinan now have 5 children, since the arrival of Barbara Kay in August.

MItzi (Morbach) Mailliard and Jim are living in Omaha. James Jr. joined 3 brothers in the household in January,

A ten year reunion is being planned for the banquet. Let’s have a good representation.

Mary Jane (Burken) Free writes from Des Moines that she is busy with 3 boys and 1 girl but finds time for square dancing.

Peggy (Kirby) Mahoney writes that husband, Bill, has gone into business for himself as a general contractor and that 4 children keep them too busy in California for a trip east.

Lea (Bird) Sherlock reports that her husband is recovering marvellously from heart surgery. Part of a new addition in Fremont is known as Sherlock Homes, after husband Don.

Vi (Purchal) Liebig added a new addition in December making a total of 4 children. Everything is fine in Platte Center.

Bernice (Riepl) Clark says their new addition in September increased the family to 3 children. Sympathy is sent for the death of her father in Decem­ber.

Rose Marie (Reveillac) Luxa is kept busy with a new daughter^ Mary Glare., and a new home.

Marguerite (Keber) and Edward A* McQuade were married October 29, i960. Ed is clerk for Northern Natural Gas Company and is-being transferred to Lincoln office, April 1st* The McQuade’s will make their home in Lin­coln.

The Keating’s recently returned from an expense paid vacation to Interna­tional Harvester in New Orleans. De- lores (Batenhorst) Keating said she talked with Pat (Farmer) Olewood and Udine (Cihacek) McCaskell in Pensacola, Florida. The Keating’s have six chil­dren. The youngest was born March 22, I960.

It’s a switch from answering those rescue squad sirens at County Hospital to motel emergencies such as burnt out light bulbs, leaky faucets, etc. for ”Cookie” (Bowen) Marquardt, for she and Keith are in the motel business now. Their new address is: The RedwoodMotel, 7901 Ft. Crook Road, Omaha, Ne­braska.

Patrick Michael joined Katy and Peg in the Frank Dineen household on Decem­ber 11, 1961. Bernie (Flaherty) writes that Katy is now in first grade and Peg in kindergarten.

Jeanne (Freshman) Keller just cannot seem to divorce herself from the class­room. At present she is teaching Trends in Nursing to the senior students at St. Joseph’s.

Mrs. Carl Tranisi (Marie Burian) lives at 3123 South 72nd Avenue, Omaha 24, Nebraska. They have 5 children, 2 girls and 3 boys. Her husband is a general surgeon and has recently moved his office to the Medical Dental Plaza at 8420 Center.

The present address for Mrs. Don Haller (Bernadette Gottula) is 5929 N. Kent Avenue, Milwaukee, Wisconsin. They have 6 children, the latest addition was a boy, Timothy, born January 2nd.

Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Cusack (Rita Grogan) are living at 742 Auburn, Char­iton, Iowa. They have 2 children, Mickey and Mary.

Lorraine (Hakel) Firmature’s husband, Sam, is a musician with Harry James1 Band. They have 3 girls, one age 44 and twins age 34> and live at 425 Jones Blvd., Las Vegas, Nevada. Lorraine would enjoy hearing from classmates and alumni.

Harvey and Norma (Shoberg) Hansen have 3 children, John Lars 7, Thomas Gilford 4, and Theresa Marie 1. They live at 3116 North 45th in Omaha. Harvey is a case worker for the Douglas County Assistance Bureau for the aged and blind. Last May Norma received a pin from St. Joseph*s Hospital for 10 years of continuous loyal service. She works in Obstetrics 20 hours a week.

The Wachter’s (Mary Heffernan) are still getting acquainted with Min­neapolis. They live at 4605 Wooddale Avenue. Don and Mary have 5 children, three of them are school age.

Mrs. Bill Larsen, the former Betty Hughes, extends a welcome invitation to any -St. Joseph’s alumni when in Rapid City, South Dakota. They have lived in Rapid City for 2 years and their ad­dress is 3715 Reder. Bill is a district Manager for Mutual and was recently one of the 7 winners of the Company’s Field Managers Award. Betty and Bill will spend 3 days in Omaha and a week at the Flamingo in Las Vegas as part of the Award.

Mary (Sloan) Mullaney and her hus­band have a'new daughter, Maureen, born February 9, Their family includes 4 other youngsters.

A family of 4 children, 2 boys and 2 girls, keeps Joan (Vandenbraucke) Cushing quite busy. However, she still iinds time to do relief work as an anesthetish one or two mornings a week. She lives with her family and husband non at 1975 -am el Avenue in Salem, Oregon.

VOLUME IT Number 5Joanne (Wallace) and Jay Sberal have

a family of 4 children, Steve 5, Jim 34* Jane 2, and Michael 7 months. Their home is at 1121 2nd Street N.W., in Mason City, Iowa. For a break in the routine, Jo works at the hospital several days a week as an anesthetist.

Bill and Norma (Pettinger) Crowley have 2 children, Maureen and Kevin, and live at 935 Rose Lane, Naperville, Illinois. The Crowley’s moved from Monticello, Illinois, to a new home in Naperville, which is about 26 miles west of the Chicago loop. Bill is sales manager for Adams Welding and Mfg. Co. Bill and Norma spent 34 weeks in Flor­ida in February and March and report they haa a fabulous vacation. Norma got lonesome for nursing and has gone back to it one day a week.

Mr. and Mrs. Jerry O ’Donnell (louise Kleepsies) have 6 children, 4 girls and 2 boys. Jerry works for Mutual. Lou­ise spent several days in Las Vegas in March visiting with her mother who is seriously ill. While there she called Lorraine Firmature who would like to hear from classmates. Juanita (Scott) Gobel, 245 Baltimore Street, Hanover, Pa. writes that she is making 10,000 meals a year for S or 9 people - 6 of them are children, John 15, Mary 14, David 12, Michael 104, Teresa 7, and Joseph 2. All 4 meals each day are nutritionally balanced to finniky kiddies appetites served "on the dot”. Along with cub and scouting programs and parish projects she has slim chances of getting '’home for the banquet"•

Meliora Jensen and Evelyn Humlicek are planning a jet holiday to Europe in April.

Eunice (Hlavac) Bird, 1864 South 123rd in Omaha, is the full time super­visor of 4 Middle at St. Joseph’s. They recently moved to a new home. Their children number three.

The family of Delores (Sullivan) Drahota and husband now consists of 2 girls and 2 boys. They just came back from a California vacation.

Mr. and Mrs, (Mary Stice) McAndrews have one 'boy, Joey age 4, and a new baby daughter, age 4 months, whom they r ecently ado pt ed.

Sister Emelie is now supervisor of Pediatrics at St. Mary’s Hospital in Cairo, Illinois.

Rita (McAleer) McCallan is expecting No. 7 in April and therefore has had to cancel any banquet plans.

Jeanne (Feldhausen) Gottula is kept busy with Mother’s Club, Band, Parents Club, dancing lessons {"for Maryann, not for Vie"), Scouts, Brownies, etc* It is 11 years now that they have lived in the Houston-Pasadena, Texas area, Terry is 14 and will start high school next year. Maryann is 8 and in the second grade. David is 2. They do come to Nebraska in the summer to visit at Grandma’s*

Ellen (McDonald) Taylor, husband, and family have been living in Augs­burg, Germany, 35 miles west of Munich, for 2 years and expect to be there one more year. She writes that it is like coming home again as she spent 2 years in the army previously* They have chil­dren - Susan 11, Bill 8, and Allican 4. Ellen has been studying German at the University of Maryland Branch lo­cated there.
