TAKE UP YOUR CROSS Father Oscar Romero was a timid, middle-level church bureaucrat in El Salvador. He silently complied with the wealthiest Salvadorians, who condemned all efforts to help the poor. Under their orders, the military were free to brutalize and kill anyone who got out of line. Romero was named Archbishop of San Salvador in 1977. He neither intervened in nor protested at the violence. Then came a turning point: along with two companions, a priest the Archbishop knew personally was killed. Romero started asking questions and became a marked man. He presented the Pope with reports detailing human rights abuses in El Salvador. In 1980, as Romero was celebrating Mass, he said. “Those who surrender to the service of the poor through love of Christ will live like the grain of wheat that dies . . . The harvest comes because of the grain that dies.” He was killed with a single sniper shot to the heart. To put other people first is to serve Christ himself, regardless of the risk.

JOLIET, IL - The Cathedral of Saint Raymond Nonnatus in the Diocese of Joliet in Illinois announced that it will celebrate Tenebrae on Wednesday, April 17, 2019 at 7:00pm. Tenebrae is the ancient liturgical practice combining the Office of Readings and Morning Prayer with the

chanting of passages from the Book of Lamentations and the singing of choral music that reflects on the suffering and death of Christ. Father Ryan Adorjan, the Cathedral's Parochial Vicar, will preside and preach, assisted by Deacons Chris McCaffrey and Ed Petak, both of the Cathedral. The Cathedral's Choral Scholars under the direction of James Grzadzinski, Cathedral Director of Music, will offer the evening's musical selections. They will be assisted by Cathedral Associate Organist, Richard Siegel. The program will include choral music by Allegri, Anerio, Farrant, Palestrina, Sheppard, and Victoria. Please join us for this beautiful evening of music and meditation on the Passion and Death of Jesus Christ. Free parking is available on the Cathedral campus. A freewill offering benefits the Cathedral’s

sacred music program.

For more details, please contact the Cathedral Music

Office at (815) 722-6653 x218 or [email protected].

Additional Background on Tenebrae

The Tenebrae liturgy of Spy Wednesday is a particularly poignant prelude to the Triduum. The word Tenebrae has its origins in the Latin word meaning darkness or shadows. Historically preceding each of the three days in the Triduum, candles are extinguished on the Tenebrae hearse (or triangle) representing the disciples denying Christ. As the candles on the Tenebrae hearse are extinguished, a single candle remains lit. Representing Christ, it is placed on the Altar, which is Calvary. As the Tenebrae liturgy continues, the candle is removed and hidden from our sight, as for a short time, it appears that sin and death have triumphed over the Light of Christ. Adapted from the monastic tradition, this liturgy invites us to participate in the singing of hymns and the chanting of psalms, while reflecting on the Passion and Death of Christ during the Paschal Triduum, and ultimately ending with the joyful celebration of Christ’s Resurrection on Easter Sunday.

Immaculate Conception Altar of Repose

We encourage families to participate in this pilgrimage. Please consider joining us on this holy evening as we prayerfully prepare for the days to follow. Immaculate Conception is located at 134 Arthur in Elmhurst. Bus will depart at approximately 8:30 and will return at midnight. A minimum of 25 participants are needed to rent the bus. Please contact Pam Stefik at 530-3497 for further information and/or to reserve a space.
