New Year’s Day-January 1

10:00 am Mass

This is the last Sunday of our preparation for Christmas, the anniversary of Christ's birth. Like Joseph, we

can all feel unworthy of the honor of welcoming him into our hearts and our homes. We are indeed

unworthy, not because we have little of this world's goods, but because we have so little humility, so little

charity, so little faith and trust in God's goodness. Let us try to imitate Joseph and Mary, the humblest of

the humble, the kindliest of the kindly, and the greatest-ever believers in God's goodness and mercy. We

can never hope to equal them, but we can follow them humbly, from afar.

after the 8:00 & 10:00 Mass

Dear Parishioners and

Friends of St. Joseph’s,

My deepest and heartfelt

best wishes to you and

your families and loved

ones for a Blessed Christmas. In the name of Fr.

Charles, our Deacons, Peter, Steve and Bill, as well as

Sister Agnes and our entire staff, I express our

deepest thanks for your many greetings, gifts and

prayers.

Christ came into the world to save us from our

sins...and the essence of sin is separation. He came to

redeem us and unite us to Himself and to one another.

We enter into His saving grace as we do what He

did; make the world a better place. Hence, may I

suggest this Christmas that we seek to mend a

quarrel, seek out a forgotten friend; forego a grudge,

forgive an enemy; be kind and gentle and appreciate

the many gifts we have been given, both by God and

by others.

May the darkness of this world give way to God's

radiant light as we seek to forgive, to love, to laugh

and to cherish our God and one another.

WHO INVENTED THE NATIVITY SCENE?

On Christmas Eve 1223, St. Francis created the first

nativity in Greccio, Italy. With the help of a local

nobleman, Francis celebrated the birth of Jesus in a

cave outside the town. The liturgy featured a hay-filled

manger in front of the temporary altar, and as Francis

preached, the nobleman arranged to have an ox and a

donkey stand at the altar as well.

The Franciscans quickly spread the practice of

creating nativity scenes with live animals and actors.

Living scenes remained popular, but static nativities

also developed, allowing the scene to remain on

display for longer periods for meditation. As the

tradition was introduced to new regions throughout

the world, nativity scenes adapted to local tastes and

customs. By the 19

th

century Protestant churches,

slackened their opposition to the scenes, and their

popularity spread through the wider Christian world.
