Next Week: Seventh Sunday in

Ordinary Time 1st Reading: Leviticus 19:1-2, 17-18 2nd Reading: I Corinthians 3:16-23 Gospel: Matthew 5:38-48

SCRIPTURE FOCUS: Today’s passage continues the Sermon on the Mount. Jesus asks his followers to live by a higher law than the Mosaic code, replacing strict justice with deep concern for the welfare of others. Christians must rise above an ordinary human standard that says we love those who love us in return. Christianity chal-lenges us to love our enemies. Jesus calls us to follow his example. His life mirrors God’s love for all creation. We are to love not because others deserve love but be-cause as Christians – followers of Christ, sons and daughters of God – it’s our nature to love.

LIFE FOCUS: Describe an experience when you felt in-jured by someone and struggled to love that person any-how.

COMMUNITY NEWS

It’s not too late to make one more New Year’s Resolution to save a life by giving blood! We need you (and a friend, too) to donate at the

Monthly Blood Drive on Sunday, February 19 at the First Aid Squad Building (619 Ridge Road, by the library) from 8:30 to 1:30. This session is extra special as we’ve been asked by the American Red Cross to help ease the ongoing short-age of blood in our state. No appointments are required—walks in are always welcomed - but you can reserve a spot by going to www.redcross.org and entering our zip code (07480). Please eat a good meal and drink plenty of fluids before donating and bring ID. Questions? Com-ments? Contact Jim Gilligan at 973-728-4251 or [email protected]. P.S. all on-line registrants will receive a $5 Amazon gift card!!

WHEN WE RECEVIE HOLY COMMUNION The General Instruction asks each country's Conference of Bish-ops to determine the posture to be used for the reception of Com-munion and the act of reverence to be made by each person as he or she receives Communion. In the United States, the body of Bishops determined that Communion should be received standing, and that a bow is the act of reverence made by those receiving. These norms may require some adjustment on the part of those who have been used to other practices, however the significance of unity in posture and gesture as a symbol of our unity as mem-bers of the one body of Christ should be the governing factor in our own actions http://www.usccb.org/prayer-and-worship/the-mass/order-of-mass/liturgy-of-the-eucharist/the-reception-of-holy-communion-at-mass.cfm

ASK

It is an obligation of the pastor to celebrate one Mass a week for the people of the parish and their intentions. It’s part of the pastoral care that the pastor prays for the people and their spiritual needs so they grow closer to God.

Why each weekend do we pray for the “People of the Parish”

in our Mass intentions?
