MASS INTENTIONS FOR THE WEEK

In Baptism we are reborn as children of God, made members of His Church, and heirs to the Kingdom of Heaven. With this in mind, we welcome this child of God who was baptized this weekend: Anthony John Salatino son of Brendon & Ellen

Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia at the 2014 Diocesan Men’s Conference! March 8, 2014

All men of the parish are invited to the fifth annual Men’s Conference on March 8th at St. Joseph’s in Herndon. This year’s conference – entitled Go Forth with Hearts on Fire – will feature Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia and Curtis Martin, founder of Focus Campus Ministries, talking about ways we can bring our

faith into our homes, our jobs, and our society. Breakfast, lunch, and Mass with Bishop Loverde will be included. Tickets are selling fast and the event will be sold out. Register online at www.arlingtondiocese.org/men before February 8th and receive a $10 discount.

Beginning tomorrow things will look a little bare here in the church as the Christmas season is officially over. At one time the Christmas season was celebrated for 40 days, ending on February 2nd, Candlemas Day. However the revised Church calendar now says that the Christmas season ends with the celebration of the Baptism of Jesus by John the Baptist. I’m going to hate to see the Poinsettia’s and the Christmas Crèche taken down. It makes the church seem warmer and more festive. However, we need to remember that we are not called to stagnantly sit and lounge in the memories of what was, rather we were commissioned at our own baptism to go forth and bring the news of hope into our world. Yes, this is a command from Christ, not a suggestion. It is for all baptized believers, not simply for priests or religious, not for a Director of Religious Education or catechists in religious education programs, it is a command from Jesus to all the baptized to go and ‘make disciples of all nations.’ How we do that is as varied as the number of gifts we possess. Sure, some people are endowed with gifts that we notice. Pope Francis has been noticed by the world in the way he practices his faith. Not simply a person who piously prays, but one who literally takes his faith to the streets. But we do not all possess the same gifts and talents (personally that would be boring if we were all alike). Some of our gifts are more subtle. I remember Ingeborg, a lady born in Austria who moved to Texas. I had the opportunity to meet her a few times when she was in the hospital for chemotherapy. She couldn’t do much, as she couldn’t have a lot of contact with the outside world due to her low white blood cell count and her chance of quickly picking up an infection. However, with everything she was going through she kept her gentle sense of humor … and her rosary. Everyone in the hospital knew she was Catholic, (I’m sure the rosary was a sure sign for them). Yet most mentioned they were attracted to her because of the hope she had, not in the medicine or a cure, but in a God who loved her. She wouldn’t talk about it unless she was asked, but they asked when they saw in her someone who didn’t complain of her suffering. Instead, they saw a woman who seemed more concerned with those who stopped in to see her. When I had her funeral Mass, the church was packed with not only her friends, but many of the doctors, nurses and hospital staff who treated her. After the Mass, some of the doctors and nurses came up to me and shared how she ministered to them. She would ask about their families and children and she would remind them that she was keeping them in prayer. Her gentleness and concern touched their lives. Baptism empowers us all as children of God to bring the message of hope and peace to others. Each of us has been given different gifts from God in order to do this. One doesn’t need to have special gifts in order to do this. It is simply a matter of recognizing how much God cares for us and then to live that experience of love in the world. Pope Francis witnesses that love by bringing his faith to the streets, while in her own gentle way, Ingebord witnessed that love and concern for others without leaving her bed. How do others see our faith in action? Or better yet, perhaps we need to ask, “Do others see our faith in action?” May we take our Baptismal call seriously and let God work through us to bring hope and joy to others. And for the last time until next December…Merry Christmas everyone!

ST. JOSEPH SCHOOL St. Joseph School opened its doors as a parish school 36 years ago with a mission to reach out and teach all God’s children. We believe that a Catholic education should be affordable to any family that desires a Catholic education for their child/children. The cost of tuition is a financial challenge in today’s economy. Many parents sacrifice in order for their child/children to attend a Catholic school. We at St. Joseph School work closely with parents to devise a plan to ensure that their child/children may receive a Catholic education. We are proud to offer families with more than one child enrolled at St. Joseph School a reduced tuition rate. Additionally, in 2013-2014, 10 % of our school families received some amount of financial aid. Financial assistance is available through the Arlington Diocesan Tuition Program, Arlington Diocese Emergency Grant, founda-tion contributions, and gifts from the diocese, parish, RHLCT Foundation, other ministries, Saints Program, individual spon-sors and trust distributions earmarked for tuition aid. Would you be interested in giving a child the gift of a Catholic education, a gift of a lifetime? Call the school office at (703) 880-4350 or email Teresa Westhues, Finance Administrator, [email protected]

Augustine’s Brothers Men’s Purity - Augustine’s Brothers is for men desiring spiritual growth and support in fostering a life of greater purity/chastity according to one’s state in life. The group is ideal if you simply struggle with the barrage of our hyper-sexual culture or if you find yourself struggling at a deeper level with porn or other sexual behaviors. Through confidentiality, prayer, spiritual study, fellowship and the Sacraments we are able to become the Godly men we long to be. Lives are changed, healed and restored through this ministry. Please contact Tim at 727-207-2856 or email him at [email protected]. Confidentiality and Anonymity is respected. “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” Phil. 4:13

New Members: “All are welcome in this place.” Remember, just attending church here does not automatically make you a registered parishioner. If you have not formally registered in the parish, the Parish Office is open from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Mon.-Fri. throughout the year. Registration packets may either be picked up during these hours, downloaded from website, or are mailed upon request by calling 703-880-4300.
