5Hacked E-Mail Account—My archdiocesan email account was hacked recently and people have been

receiving bogus emails from me asking that they contact me to discuss a ma!er or asking for an

i-Card. The email was sent from an account address that looks like mine. The subject line is innocuous

and the closing of the email imitates mine. Lastly, the bogus email was sent from an i-phone. I don’t

have one. If you have or do receive a suspicious email, consider it bogus and please do not respond to

it. You may wish to report it as spam.

First Holy Communion—Welcome to all who have joined us to celebrate the First Holy Communion of

our students at the 4:30 PM and 10:30 AM Masses this weekend. Please hold our students, their

parents and families in your prayers that they will always treasure and receive the Most Holy Eucharist for the rest of their lives. Be a

witness and example to them of the precious, indispensable gi" of the Eucharist as food for the journey of life. As Christ said, the one

who eats my body and drinks my blood will live forever. May the Bread of Life, which the Eucharist is, be the food upon which we all

depend on the road to eternal life.

Goerend, Thomas Heathershaw, Joshua Link, Michael McAndrew and Tyler Raymond will be ordained for service in the Order of the

Diaconate.

Upah will be ordained for service by the Most Reverend Michael O. Jackels, Archbishop of Dubuque.

New Tax Law and Charitable Giving--Now that the 2017 tax season has concluded, our a!en#on turns towards the recently passed

Tax Reform Law and its poten#al impact on charitable giving in 2018. Below you will find some informa#on and, hopefully, some

helpful guidance as responsible stewards of God’s many gi"s.

So, what will change?

• The standard deduc#on (allowed on federal tax forms) will nearly double to $12,000 for individuals and $24,000 for married

couples. This change (coupled with other restric#ons) will reduce the number of individuals and families who itemize their federal

taxes. Fewer people itemizing their federal taxes will mean that fewer people will be receiving a federal tax deduc#on for cash gi"s

given to charity.

But, what won’t change?

• Many different avenues of giving s#ll remain very lucra#ve! Gi"s, such as, those receiving a tax credit (for example, the STO),

appreciated stock gi"s, gi"s of property, grain gi"s, and IRA charitable rollover gi"s will all con#nue to offer excellent ways to save tax.

• The tax benefits of charitable giving will remain the same on your state taxes in Iowa, since those s#ll have not changed.

• The charitable deduc#on for those who will con#nue to itemize is s#ll very much available and, in fact, has been enhanced, allowing

individuals to deduct up to 60% (up from 50%) of their adjusted gross income to charity.

And, most importantly…

• Our reason for giving hasn’t changed! Rather than giving in order to save on tax, we give to a cause, to a mission, in the name of

Chris#an charity. The message of Christ was, is, and will forever be the expecta#on that we help those in need by—among other

things—being good stewards of the many gi"s with which we have been entrusted. Suppor#ng the mission of Christ through the

sharing of our gi"s at the local, diocesan, and universal levels is s#ll very much a part of our iden#ty as Catholics.

Other things to consider:

• Certain individuals and families might end up saving some tax under the new law. Perhaps those who do will think to donate a

por#on of those savings through charitable giving.

• Even this year, a certain number of us will be receiving a tax return. A generous op#on might be to share a por#on of that return

through a gi" to a charity that supports the poor and disadvantaged or to our parish community.

This informa!on is made available by the Archdiocese of Dubuque and is not intended as legal or tax advice. Taxpayers should consult

with their tax advisor as to his/her specific situa!on.

Humanae Vitae 50th Anniversary Celebra!on--Join in celebra#ng the 50th Anniversary of the release of Pope Paul VI’s encyclical

Humanae Vitae, which expresses the beau#ful teachings of the Church regarding human sexuality and family planning. The celebra#on

will take place on Sunday, July 22 from 5:00-7:30 pm at St. Pius X in Cedar Rapids and will include a catered dinner and keynote

address en#tled “The Message of Humanae Vitae 50 Years Later” by interna#onally renowned speaker Dr. Janet E. Smith. For more

informa#on and to register, visit www.dbqarch.org/humanae-vitae-event. For ques#ons, contact Ma! Selby, Director of Marriage

and Family Life, at (800) 876-3546, ext. 233 or [email protected].
