Confessions will be heard from 3:00 PM to 3:30 PM on Saturdays. You may also make an appointment. The temporary confessional is located outdoors at the patio adjacent to the parish office. The confessional in the church is too confined which better allows for the spread of the Coronavirus through aerosolized breath vapor. When you come for confession, please wait in your car, do not form a line, wait until the priest gestures to you to come into the confessional, wear a mask and practice social distancing. Thank you.

Please volunteer for open ministry opportunities through Ministry Scheduler Pro or by calling Nancy Roush in the parish office.

Parish Stewardship: Sharing One’s Treasure

Your financial gifts to the parish have been fantastic especially during this unprecedented pandemic crisis. Thank you for your faith, generosity and care. Please continue what you have been doing.

We have an idea for you to consider. While you certainly may continue to give through your budget envelope, and we always will be grateful, we would be equally grateful if you were to choose to give in these ways:

1. By ACH-- Bank withdrawals can be made weekly, monthly or bi-monthly. 2. By Tithe.ly-- Debit or credit card offertory directly to the parish can be done at any time. A recurring option is available if desired. 3. By electronic check-- Request a check to be mailed to the parish from your banking institution weekly, monthly, or another timeframe. This is a touchless option but does require staff to record and deposit at the bank.

We suggest these alternative ways to give in order to minimize or eliminate contact with paper as yet another way to protect the priest and office staff from the spread of the Coronavirus. Perhaps this makes sense to you. If it does, please consider giving via the alternate means presented.

However you chose to give, please know of our continued gratitude for your generosity. You are making a difference!

Monday Eucharistic Adoration

If you are interested, or have any questions, please contact Becky Bostwick at (319) 550-2884 or by email: [email protected].

August 29 - 30, 2020 22nd Sunday in Ordinary Time

Gathering hymn: The Summons Will you come and follow me if I but call your name? Will you go where you don’t know and never be the same? Will you let my love be shown, will you let my name be known? Will you let my life be grown in you and you in me?

Will you leave yourself behind if I but call your name? Will you care for cruel and kind and never be the same? Will you risk the hostile stare should your life attract or scare? Will you let me answer prayer in you and you in me?

Entrance Antiphon cf. Psalm 86 (85) :3, 5 Have mercy on me, O Lord, for I cry to you all the day long. O Lord, you are good and forgiving, full of mercy to all who

call on you.

Reading 1 JER 20:7-9 You duped me, O LORD, and I let myself be duped; you were too strong for me, and you triumphed. All the day I am an object of laughter; everyone mocks me. Whenever I speak, I must cry out, violence and outrage is my message; the word of the LORD has brought me derision and reproach all the day. I say to myself, I will not mention him, I will speak in his name no more. But then it becomes like fire burning in my heart, imprisoned in my bones; I grow weary holding it in, I cannot endure it. Responsorial Psalm PS 63:2, 3-4, 5-6, 8-9 R. (2b) My soul is thirsting for you, O Lord my God. O God, you are my God whom I seek; for you my flesh pines and my soul thirsts like the earth, parched, lifeless and without water. R. My soul is thirsting for you, O Lord my God. Thus have I gazed toward you in the sanctuary to see your power and your glory, For your kindness is a greater good than life; my lips shall glorify you. R. My soul is thirsting for you, O Lord my God. Thus will I bless you while I live; lifting up my hands, I will call upon your name. As with the riches of a banquet shall my soul be satisfied, and with exultant lips my mouth shall praise you. R. My soul is thirsting for you, O Lord my God. You are my help, and in the shadow of your wings I shout for joy. My soul clings fast to you; your right hand upholds me.

Reading 2 ROM 12:1-2 I urge you, brothers and sisters, by the mercies of God, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God, your spiritual worship. Do not conform yourselves to this age but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and pleasing and perfect. Gospel MT 16:21-27 Jesus began to show his disciples that he must go to Jerusalem and suffer greatly from the elders, the chief priests, and the scribes, and be killed and on the third day be raised. Then Peter took Jesus aside and began to rebuke him, “God forbid, Lord! No such thing shall ever happen to you.” He turned and said to Peter, “Get behind me, Satan! You are an obstacle to me. You are thinking not as God does, but as human beings do." Then Jesus said to his disciples, “Whoever wishes to come after me must deny himself, take up his cross, and follow me. For whoever wishes to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will find it. What profit would there be for one to gain the whole world and forfeit his life? Or what can one give in exchange for his life? For the Son of Man will come with his angels in his Father’s glory, and then he will repay all according to his conduct.” Communion Antiphon Psalm 31(30):20 How great is the goodness, Lord, That you keep for those who fear you.

OR Matthew 5: 9-10 Blessed are the peacemakers, For they shall be called children of God. Blessed are they who are persecuted for the sake of righteousness, For theirs is the Kingdom of Heaven. Song of Praise: Refrain: Go make a difference. We can make a difference. Go make a difference in the world. Go make a difference. We can make a difference. Go make a difference in the world.

We are the salt of the earth, called to let the people see the love of God in you and me. We are the light of the world, not to be hidden but be seen. Go make a difference in the world. (to refrain)

Out of the Office—I will be away from the parish on a short retreat after the Masses on August 30 to return around midday on September 1. Mass on Tuesday morning will be cancelled.

Special Collection Called by Archbishop Jackels—Please find below an excerpt of what the archbishop wrote about the derecho calling for a special collection. I though you would like to know what he wrote to the Archdiocese about it. Additionally, if you would like to make a contribution, please do so.

On 10 August 2020, a freak storm, called a derecho, hit Iowa with hurricane-force winds. The storm caused severe damage to crops, businesses, and homes located in the nine southernmost counties of the Archdiocese of Dubuque.

The individuals and families most severely affected are the poor, and those already struggling with the financial impact of the coronavirus pandemic.

A Derecho Relief Fund has been established to help individuals and families in the affected areas, with priority being given to those who aren’t eligible for state or federal relief. Absolutely all of the monies donated will go directly to help people where it is most needed.

If you are able to help, please donate on-line at www.dbqarch.org, Derecho Relief Fund. Or you can send your donation to: Derecho Relief Fund, Catholic Charities, 1229 Mt. Loretta Avenue, Dubuque IA 52003. Thank you in advance for your generosity, and for your prayers.

Recovery from the Wicked Derecho—The recovery will be prolonged. Our parish has been working to be helpful to those in need. Check our website https://stjoesmarion.org/and click on the Storm Relief and Help tile. Some folks will find a need to talk about what happened and the challenges they are facing. We’re here for that, too, and are just a phone call or email away. The sacraments are available to you as well, especially the Eucharist, the Sacrament of Penance and the Anointing of the Sick. Feel free to call 377-4869 and ask for me to talk or for the sacraments or a staff member you know to talk.

The Good Friday Collection—Because of the pandemic and the closure of churches for public Masses during Holy Week, the Holy Father has rescheduled the 2020 Pontifical Good Friday Collection for September 13, 2020. Here’s some helpful information about the collection:

Every year on Good Friday, a collection is taken up in Catholic Churches to support the work of the Franciscans working in the Holy Land. Christians there rely heavily on the help that comes to them from this worldwide collection. This year, since measures to prevent the spread of the coronavirus prohibit gatherings in our churches, the traditional Good Friday Collection for the Holy Land has been postponed to September 13th.

The Franciscans of the Custody of the Holy Land have the unique responsibility to care for the Holy Places as well for the “Living Stones,” the Christians living there. It is vital that we support Christians living in the Holy Land, in order to maintain a Christian presence in the very land made holy by the life, death and Resurrection of Jesus.

Marion Senior Living Coupon Sales—this weekend and next, $5.00 coupons to be redeemed at Zio Johno’s will be sold in support of Marion Senior Living, located on Highway 13, which offers low to moderate income housing for senior citizens. St. Joseph has been a longtime supporter of this community. The coupons will be sold at or near the canopy of the church. A protocol for your safety will be practiced including social distancing and the requirement that masks be worn. Please help support this community.

8:00 AM Sunday Mass—will be outdoors if and when the weather causes us to return to the church. The Mass is open to anyone to attend, but we hope that those who don’t yet feel comfortable returning to the church building may find the option of attending in the car more suited to their needs. Families have found this option helpful as well. Please find more important information about the Mass at this link https://stjoesmarion.org/mass-times.

Gravely important to make this Mass option work is that we have volunteers to sustain the liturgy. The priest, deacons and staff cannot do this alone. We need you to volunteer to be ambassadors to set-up Mass and tear down, to hand out bulletins and receive contributions. We also need sacristans, lectors, Eucharistic ministers and altar servers. We can’t depend upon a few or the same people to make this happen but need the effort of many. Thanks in advance for your assistance and participation.
