Around the Parish The Parish Council is still looking for parishioners to form a Building and Grounds Committee. They could meet as often as they need to discuss the maintenance, repair and replacement of the buildings and equipment of the par-ish. Parishioners who use the east parking lot have noticed the deteriorating condition of the parking lot. The Building and Grounds committee would discuss the benefits of patch-ing or replacing the parking lot. They would work with the Finance committee and the Stewardship Committee to find the needed money to complete the project. If you believe you could contribute something to this group please talk to Fr. Luis or email [email protected].

~We are looking for people to share their faith to our young people as Catechist. They can be young or old, a man or a woman, married or single, teach as a team or in-dividually. We need people with a love of Jesus Christ and be willing to share their faith. We also need a few individu-als with special talents. We need a Music Director to teach songs to our children. We also need a Fundraising Coordi-nator to help us make the most out of our fundraising ef-forts. Please consider if you have something to offer our students. Thank you for your prayers. ~Faith formation is a lifelong process. Our Pastor, our Bish-op and our Pope will all tell you that they continue to grow their faith on a daily basis. That is why the years between preparing for a sacrament are just as important as those sacramental preparation years. We are developing a habit of prayer and response to how God works in the lives of our children. This habit of growing faith supported by the family will help our children as they have to make the tough choices in their teenage years and beyond. Classes begin in 39 days. Are all of your children registered for Faith Formation classes?

St. Joseph’s “60th” Anniversary In June, 2016 the parish will celebrate the 60th anniversary of its formation. The Parish Council would like to celebrate this event. We would like to create a committee to plan events for this occasion. If you would be interested in serv-ing on this committee please leave your name and phone number at the parish office or send an e-mail to: [email protected]. 60 Aniversario de San José En junio del 2016 la parroquia celebrará el 60 aniversario de su formación.

Intercultural Communication

Efforts to learn and worship together may come to nothing at all—or even reinforce prejudices—unless they are carried out with a spirit of openness and charity. Not everything in one culture will meet with the approval of another. There may be disagreements about child-rearing practices, the place of women in the liturgy, styles of preaching, or suitable expres-sions of piety. Such differences are inevitable even within one culture. But in cross-cultural encounters, disagreements must be informed by understanding the roots of people's attitudes and practices and with respect for their right to find their own way within the one Gospel. Understanding will come with a growing knowledge of the history, values, and experi-ences of others. Respect must be born of charity and faith in the ultimate unity in Christ of all humanity.

Intercultural communication—sustained efforts, carried out by people of diverse cultures, to appreciate their differences, work out conflicts, and build on commonalities—will thus be an important component of coming to know and respect the diverse cultures that make up today's Church. The dominant culture in the United States stresses the individual and his or her feelings and decisions. In less individualistic cultures, individuals may feel hesitant to express their own opinions openly, even in a friendly setting, without reinforcement from the group. Among immigrants of the same group, too, divisions along lines of social class or educational background can erect barriers to understanding, with some members adapting to the procedures and practices of parish life more readily than others. Often, culturally sensitive intermediaries are needed to facilitate exchanges, mediate conflicts, and promote genuine participation by all.

Integration will be facilitated when all parties maintain an open spirit. Integration cannot be forced, and those who host newcomers must be especially aware of the vulnerabilities of immigrants and the impulse many immigrants feel to with-draw from interaction. Pastors and lay leaders who are aware of these dynamics of adaptation and communication among cultures will lead the way in facilitating the full, equal incorporation of all members of the community into the life of the Church. Copied with permission from www.usccb.org “A Call to Communion-Intercultural Communication”, will continue next week.

Stewardship Thought for the Week In today’s reading from the First Book of Kings, God provides His weary and distraught prophet Elijah with food and drink to strengthen him for his pilgrimage to Mt. Horeb. In St. John’s Gospel, Jesus proclaims He is the spiritual “Bread of Life” that those who consume this Bread will live forever. As we partake of the Lord’s consecrated Body and Blood, soul and divinity, we become one spirit in discipleship with Him. St. Paul teaches the Romans and us to follow the way of love through Christ. Through Christ’s love and our participation in the Eucharist, Jesus com-mands us to profess His Word to all in a spirit of evangeliza-tion, and invite our brothers and sisters to a Eucharistic relation-ship in the Lord.
