From the Principal’s desk…. Welcome to Week 4 and a very important week in our Catholic Liturgical calendar, the Assumption
of Mary Mass on Wednesday.
Let me begin this week with a number of messages of congratulations and some highlights of one
of my favourite tasks as a Principal – class visits.
Congratulations to Year 6 who returned from their Canberra Excursion. From the many reports we
received the students were outstanding representatives of our school. Well done Year 6.
In this week’s news there is a report and results from the recent Northern Athletics carnival. There
were some great results from the carnival and I am proud of the students for their efforts and now
I am sure there are many students who are training hard for the Diocesan carnival. Special
congratulations to the following record breakers and aged champions:
Junior Girls -3 way tie- Molly Emery, Orlagh Quigley and Grace Peters
11 Years Boy—Nicholas Peters.
Senior Boy– Reef Martin.
Record Breakers. Ruby Tudor, Angus Boland, Grace Peters and Nicholas Peters
Congratulations goes to our School Captain Aspen Moore, for her amazing performances at the
recent Australian Primary Schools Swimming Championships in Hobart. We are very proud of you.
This past week I enjoyed visiting a number of classes. I was very impressed with 2 lessons that had a
STEM focus. What is STEM? STEM is an approach to learning and development that integrates the
areas of science, technology, engineering and mathematics.
In Year 2, Laura Emery who teaches STEM across the classes on a Friday was working with Miss
Redden and Year 2 using virtual reality to explore the oceans. The students were very engaged and
excited. Miss Veech and Year 3 were exploring Mini Beasts and I was very impressed with the
research skills of the children and the design and making skills. These scientific skills are
demonstrations of the opportunities at SJP, particularly in the area of STEM. Well done SJP.
VISION STATEMENT
To change the world through our faith in Jesus who is our light and hope.
On Wednesday St John’s Primary will be joining with St Pius X at St Brigid’s Church to celebrate Mass,
and the Holy Day of Obligation – The Assumption of Mary.
Although defined as an article of faith by Pope Pius XII just over half a century ago, the Assumption of
Our Lady into heaven has been accepted from back to the earliest of Christian times.
The Assumption signals the end of Mary's earthly life and marks her return to heaven to be reunited
with Jesus. While the bodies of both Jesus and Mary are now in heaven, there is a difference between
the Assumption and the Resurrection. Where Jesus arose from the tomb and ascended into heaven by his own power, Mary's
body was taken up to heaven by the power of her Son.
All are welcome to be with us for this Mass.
Gospel and Reflection: John 6:41-51 At this the Jews there began to grumble about him because
he said, “I am the bread that came down from heaven.” They said, “Is this not Jesus, the son of Jo-
seph, whose father and mother we know? How can he now say, ‘I came down from heaven’? “Stop
grumbling among yourselves,” Jesus answered. “No one can come to me unless the Father who sent
me draws them, and I will raise them up at the last day. It is written in the Prophets: ‘They will all be
taught by God.’[a] Everyone who has heard the Father and learned from him comes to me. No one
has seen the Father except the one who is from God; only he has seen the Father. Very truly I tell you,
the one who believes has eternal life. I am the bread of life. Your ancestors ate the manna in the wilderness, yet they died .
But here is the bread that comes down from heaven, which anyone may eat and not die. I am the living bread that came down
from heaven. Whoever eats this bread will live forever. This bread is my flesh, which I will give for the life of the world.”
‘Get up and eat, or the journey will be too long for you.’
Thankyou – A big thankyou to all of our community and our students for their support of our Out of Uniform day
for the drought appeal. $731.35 was raised to support the Buy a Bail appeal. We continue to pray for a break in
these drought conditions.
God bless and have a wonderful week
Anthony O’Leary
The Gospel recalls the words of Jesus telling us of the wonder of his Father’s miraculous food. We are invited to receive
the bread given for the life of the world. This living bread will animate our work for the kingdom.

Our Canberra Experience Some of the Year 6 students would like to share their experience from our Excursion last week. The teachers would like to thank the students for their outstanding behaviour and for embracing the experience in a positive manner. We hope a restful weekend has them ready to resume ‘normal’ activities. George & Zac - On Monday the 6th August, Year 6 departed Dubbo and headed toward Canberra. After six hours we arrived in Canberra. We went to the National Museum of Democracy and the National Museum. Then we went to our ac-commodation and rock climbing afterwards. On Tuesday we had our fun in the snow, sadly there was a mini-blizzard and it threw sleet at us (which hurt). On Wednesday, we went to the Australian Institute of Sport and we looked at the training areas and found out about the sports in the interactive zone. We also went to Parliament House and role-played the passing of a bill in the House of Representatives. We also did Lasertag at iPlay and did a workshop based around creating prototypes at the Ian Potter Foundation. On the final day we went to Questacon and the Australian War Memorial. These were our favourite things: Zac - The thing I liked the most was the snow because we had a sleet, which was the best. George - I liked the whole trip but the role-play in Parliament House was fun because I was the clerk.
Joe & Suvam – We had a couple of favourite venues including Questacon, The National War Memorial and playing laser tag. Questacon was really all about Science and Technology. Different galleries focused on different parts of science such as electromagnetic waves, meteorology and matter. This sounds nerdy, but it's very fun! The Australian War Memorial was indeed explicate. The different models were detailed and the guide really did a good job at making us feel like we were part of the war. The shows were heartbreaking. We can tell that Year 5 next year will enjoy their visit.
Jonty & Jay On Monday 6th August (the first day of the excursion) we went to many places to learn about Parliament such as the Old Parliament House (or Museum of Democracy). Afterwards we arrived at our accommoda-tion and had chicken for dinner. After that we went rock climbing which was AWESOME!!!! On the second day we left for the snow and reached it after a long drive. While we were there we had a snowball fight and learned to make snow shelters. On Wednesday we went to the Parliament House and did a practise debate. Afterwards we checked out the AIS and the Mint. We also went to the Ian Potter Foundation and did an awesome workshop there. After dinner we went to iPlay and did laser-tag, dodgem cars and played arcade games. On our last day at Canberra we had a great time at the War Memorial and Questacon. All in all it was an awesome trip!!! Lexi: Parliament house was amazing, sadly parliament wasn’t sitting whilst while we were there. We visited both chambers, House of Reps and the Senate. After doing the tour, we did a role-play of being in the House of Reps. Nick was the Prime Minister (leader of the government team), and I was the leader of the opposition team. We were creating a new bill if children should go to school for 2 hrs longer. All of the cross-bench came to the opposition side, but it was not enough. The government team had won! We re-ally enjoyed ourselves at Parliament House. Saxbii & Yani: Last Monday, Year 6 set off on their 3 night excursion to Canberra. On Monday our favourite activity was our night time activity, rock climbing. The walls were around about 15 metres high, most of year 6 man-aged to get to the top. Beside the squeaky beds, overall our cabins were pretty cosy. Tuesday we had an early start so we could have a longer time at the snow. We were playing in the bliz-zard. Wednesday we visited the Parliament House, the Parliament House has 2700 clocks so the parliamentary members know where to go when the alarm goes off and they are needed for a vote. Thursday we visited Questacon we had a great time, we had a long trip home. In summary, Year 6 had an awesome excursion.
The Lion King Kids Update:
The Lion King Kids Musical is fast approaching! Parents we need clean 2L bottles to create musical instruments (lids are essential). If you have any spare 2L bottles, please send them to school with your child and leave them with the class teacher.
