The P.E. department is proud to an-

nounce that St. John’s football and netball teams

have once again exceeded our expectations, with

only two league defeats thus far this season, and

some outstanding performances. We are certainly

looking forward to exciting times and are pre-

empting more trophies to be won. The tough

fitness regime and skill work followed during les-

sons are giving us the cutting edge during games.

The results are testament to the winning mentality

adopted by both pupils and teachers alike.

Mr. Hodgson

All three football teams have had an

impressive start to the season with all three sides

remaining unbeaten. The Senior boys have won all

their matches comfortably. Tamilore has been the

pick of the players, dominating in midfield, and

Matthew has scored five goals in only two appear-

ances.

The under 15s team have started strong-

ly with Andrew Connor commanding in midfield,

assisted by the wide play of Bedros and Ethan.

Defensively this team has been solid, the full backs

Jake and Tomas Buckland have worked hard in

keeping the opposition out and producing some

excellent passes from the back.

Finally the under 13s team have broken

school records. The boys destroyed Kings 18-0,

then went on to break their own record by beat-

ing North London International School 23-0. A

special mention should go to First formers Harry

Young who has dominated the midfield with ag-

gressive tackling, creative play and shooting that

would not look out of place in the Senior team.

Also Yiannis who has provided strength and power

up front, scoring an unbelievable 15 goals in 4

On the 7th of October pupils from the 5th and 6th

Form were invited to experience the white water rapids at the

Lea Valley Olympic site.

The afternoon started by getting kitted out in wet-

suits and safety gear and then we were briefed on the safety

aspects of the activity. Once this was complete we practised

paddling techniques and commands on flat water, including

rescuing each other.

It was then time to take the raft onto the main 300m

course, which consisted of drops of 5.5m on the average

slopes and a pump-powered stream flow of 13 cubic metres

per second, which we were told could fill a swimming pool in

ten seconds.

We rode the rapids completing five loops of the

course and thankfully no one fell out. The boys described

their experience as their best P.E. lesson ever!

The girls have made an excellent start to the netball season. They have

been training weekly during their lunchtime sessions and during their games after-

noons. All teams have been focusing particularly on accuracy of passing and im-

proving footwork. The 1st, 2nd and 3rd Form players have been entered into the

Enfield Borough Netball League. In addition to our league games, we also partici-

pate against other Independent schools, State schools and Academies. Even

though we are so few in number, it is amazing that St. John’s regularly beats much

larger schools who have hundreds of girls to select their teams from.

Outstanding performances this year were seen by the 1st/2nd Form

mixed team with wins including 31—1 against Northbridge Independent School.

The 3rd Form team have won all of their league games, confirming their position

as top of their group to have a guaranteed place in the semi-finals in February

2012. The 3rd Form players level of skill was highlighted by beating Kingsmead

5 - 4, which is a close score, however they were actually playing Kingsmead’s 4th

Form, a year above and St. John’s still came out triumphant.

In total, we have played 18 games this term, but we have scored 230

goals compared to the oppositions measly 90 goals. What an achievement! We

will continue training throughout winter, playing friendly fixtures and subsequently

aim to continue our outstanding record until we reach the end of the netball sea-

son at Easter. The girls also have the end of season tournaments to look forward to, which take place around March.

Enfield Borough Cross Country Championships

CROSS COUNTRY

On the 21st October all 1st to 5th Form pupils participated in the

annual cross country event. The course runs through a large woodland area

and it is quite strenuous, with up-and-downhill stretches as well as varying

surfaces, making it even more challenging. On request of the students, we

included another water station and also recruited extra 6th Form helpers to

run alongside the 1st Form students. Pupils were encouraged to beat their

individual times from previous cross country runs. We are all very proud of

the pupils’ achievements and the enthusiasm displayed on the day.

Thirty six St. John’s pupil’s

competed in the annual Cross Country

Championships at Trent Park on the 15th

November. Six teams competed in the

various age categories. This was a team

challenge and pupils ran extremely well,

with some outstanding performances in

particular by Efeilomo Akande, Megan

Jones, Harry Cox, Andrew Connor and

Tamilore Fayemi.

Golf

During my Thursday Games afternoons this term I have been playing golf

at Oakwood Park. Over the course of the term we have played Texas Scramble, in

which two teams hit as far as they can and out of the team they play the closest to

the hole. I have really enjoyed this!

In lessons we have also covered the correct technique to hit the ball,

learnt about when to use different clubs in different situations and putting skills.

Our specialist instructor Joe James is really friendly and encouraging, I think he is an

amazing teacher and I enjoy his lessons.

For anyone who does not particularly like team sports such as football,

rugby and netball, I would definitely recommend golf as an alternative Games option.

Reported by Alex Evans (2 Blue)

Tamilore displayed exceptional talent during the event and will pos-

sibly be considered for the County Championships in February 2012.

The teams achieved particularly good overall results against the

large local schools. The boys senior team came second, the girls mixed 2nd

and 3rd Form team came third and the girls senior team also achieved third

place, with the girls 1st Form team finishing 4th overall.

First Form have recently taken part in

trials for the British Schools’ Biathlon Competi-

tion. The Biathlon provides a fantastic opportuni-

ty for school children of all abilities to take part in

a multi-sports experience, with the chance of

qualifying for the British Championships.

The criteria for the Biathlon is a 50

meter swim and a 500 meter run. During P.E.

lessons, we recorded pupils ties, and the results

have been sent off to the organisers of the com-petition. We are now awaiting the results, in the

hope that some pupils might have made it through

to the championships.
