    SJC Facilites

S t. Johns boasts the Mid-Atlantic regions top high school playing facility. The Cadets play on newly reno-vated Gibbs Field. The surface and surrounding areas underwent a multimillion dollar renovation in 2009 and now features synthetic grass which will allow the Cadets to work out year round on a professional quality field. In addition to the new playing surface Gibbs Field features dugouts, 3 bullpens, 2 batting cages and a professional scoreboard.

In March 2012 the Vincent Cap Mona Baseball Clubhouse is scheduled to begin construction. This facility will be the first in the area for a high school program and one of only a handful in the nation. It will include the varsity locker room, coachs offices, players and coachs bathrooms/showers, a press box and a VIP viewing area.

St. Johns baseball also recently purchased Fungo Man. This por-table, and efficient practice machine holds over 250 balls and perfectly places those balls anywhere on a baseball field automatically, programmably, and remotely. By using a coach friendly wireless con-troller that interfaces with a State-of-The-Art machine interface, the FM-150 frees coaches or players to precisely control speed, spin, position, and elevation that produce incredibly accurate ball placement.

The indoor facilities are equally impres-sive. The Gallagher Gym holds recently installed 75 ft. indoor batting cage and is large enough for the players to work on all their baseball skills indoors. The Roth Gym is the winter home of the Cadet pitchers and fea-tures 6 portable indoor mounds.

The Cadets strength training occurs inside the Smith Weight room. This state of the art training facility features the latest and most advanced weight training equipment. When injuries occur the St. Johns players head to the Foster raining room, featuring top of the line physical therapy equipment.

    The Program

S t. Johns has a long and storied baseball tradition. Founded in 1909, the baseball program was original-ly known as the St. Johns Preps. Sometime between 1909 and 1947 the program was disbanded and re-vived by Gene Augustopher and Joe Gallagher under the name of the Cadets. The Cadets won three conference championships during the 1950s, and nine conference championships from 19601978. When Ed Gibbs took over in 1993, however, the once proud program was in a state of total disrepair. The Cadets had not captured a champion-ship in over 15 years and had not been ranked in the Washington Post Top Ten in over a decade. The Cadets had won only 9 games in the previous two seasons combined and played in a poor facility that was in need of substantial upgrades.

Gibbs resurrected the St. Johns program and constructed a baseball powerhouse whose name became synonymous with excel-lence. Gibbs first team went 13-12. His second team went 26-4, won the WCAC regular season title and began a remarkable string run of 13 straight 20 win seasons. Gibbs won 318 games, two conference tour-nament titles, eight regular season titles and saw his team ranked in the top ten by the Washington Post in 12 of his 14 years. He was selected as the Washington Post Coach of the Year in 2005 and on three different occasions was named WCAC Coach of the Year. Gibbs was inducted into the St. Johns Hall of Fame in 2008.

The 2012 season will be Mark Gibbs ninth year in the St. Johns Program and his sixth as Head Coach. During, Coach Gibbs tenure the baseball team has grown from an area powerhouse to an elite program recognized throughout the country. St. Johns has been na-tionally ranked in seven of the last eight years by the most influ-

    1909 St. John's Baseball team

ential high school baseball publications in the United States includ-ing Baseball America, USA today and Collegiate Baseball. St. Johns ascendance into the national spotlight reached a fever pitch in 2008 when Baseball America ranked the Cadets as the eighth best team in the country and featured the Cadets as its spotlight program in its national high school baseball preview issue. At the same time, Colle-giate Baseball named the Cadets as the second best high school team in the nation. The Cadets proved worthy of the preseason acclaim by placing fourth in the Anderson Bat National Classic in Southern California, the nations top high school baseball tournament. During the event St. Johns defeated two teams ranked among the top 25 in the country, both of which hailed from Southern California, before succumbing to the eventual tournament champions in the winners bracket championship game. This marked the second straight year St. Johns had defeated two nationally ranked teams from California at the Anderson Bat National Classic. This success on the national level is unprecedented for a program from the Mid Atlantic region and vali-dated the programs standing among the nations best.

Through Coach Gibbs first eight years the Cadets have sent 42 players on to college baseball and have had three players drafted by professional baseball teams. During that same time period, players from St. Johns have gone on to some of the most prestigious baseball programs in the nation including 2009 and 2011 College World Series participants the University of Virginia and the University of North Caro-lina. St. Johns has also produced 26 Washington Post All Met selec-tions, sevein high school All Americans and two WCAC Players of the Year. Coach Gibbs was honored in 2008 by being selected as a coach at the Under Armour All-American Game at Wrigley Field in Chicago, which was televised live on ESPN. 2011 marked the first WCAC Tourna-ment Championship won under the helm of Mark Gibbs.

All-WCAC selection and 2-time Washington Post All-Met selection. He was named the WCAC Player of the Year, the Gatorade Player of the Year as well as one of the top 100 players in the country by College Sport Magazine, following his senior season. Mark played 4 years of college baseball at George Mason University. He was a four-year starter at shortstop for the Patriots and finished in the top ten in hits, games played, hit by pitches and fielding chances. After college, Mark was signed as a free agent by the Baltimore Orioles and spent 3 1/2 years in professional baseball advancing to Double A (Bowie) with the Orioles.

In 4 of Marks first 5 seasons the Cadets were nationally ranked by the major baseball publications (Baseball America, Collegiate Baseball, ESPN, Rivals.Com, Perfect Game and USA Today) and be-fore the 2008 season St. Johns graced the cover of Baseball America where the Cadets enjoyed a profile article in the Baseball America high school preview. St. Johns was the first team from the Mid-Atlantic to ever enjoy a profile article in the preview issue. Mark has sent 33 players into college baseball, has had 3 players drafted by professional teams and has an overall record of 106-33, including four 20 win campaigns, through his first 5 seasons.

Players from St. Johns have advanced into some of the most prestigious college programs in the nation including 2009 & 2011 College World Series participants University of Virginia (Scott Silver-stein, Nick Howard) and University of North Carolina (LJ Hoes, Josh Leehmuis) as well as SEC power Mississippi State (Nick Routt). Dur-ing his 8 years as the Head Infield Instructor he has had 14 different infielders earn college scholarships (17 total played college baseball). Mark was named as an assistant coach for the 2009 Under Armour All-American game at Wrigley Field in Chicago and the Washington DC Extra Coach of the Year in 2010. In 2011, the Cadets won the WCAC Tournament Title and finished with a 22-9 record.

His Diamond Skills Baseball Prospect Camp also brings in some of the top college coaches from around the nation to work with serious junior high players during the summer. His work with college coaches during recruiting season and with these camps

has allowed him to develop an extensive network of close friends and contacts in the college coaching profession.

    Season Preview

t he 2012 Cadets return a total of 14 players from the 2011 Championship Team but will look vastly different on the field. Overall, veteran players comprise only 25 percent of the Cadets offense and 30 percent of their pitching. This years team will feature new starters in all of the infield positions as well as two new outfielders. As Coach Gibbs enters into his 6th season (106-33 overall), the good news is that the seniors who are expected to fill most of the roles played a big part in the playoff run in 2011. There is always anxiety when you lose guys who had been part of your club for so long says Gibbs referring to the departed starters but it also exciting to see new guys get their shot to uphold the tradition.

Starting PitchingAs was the case last year, the starting pitching will be deep but in-experienced. Four pitchers return from the 2011 staff and only three have made a conference start. In 2012, the Cadets will rely on as many as six different starters throughout the year. Headlining the staff will be Mississippi State signee Alex Deise. Deise led the team in innings pitched a year ago and posted a 2.1 ERA on his way to being named Honorable Mention All WCAC and Honorable Mention Washington Post All Met. The Cadets will count on his leadership and big-game ex-perience throughout the year. Senior George Washington signee Danny ODonnell, who won 2 games last year, and Tennessee commit Michael Flax, who spent the majority of 2011 as a closer, will follow him. Junior right-handers Harry Thomas, the JVs top pitcher in 2011, along with Phil Reese, a transfer from Thomas Johnson will be joined by sopho-more Garret Pearson to round out the rotation. We are really excited about the depth and variety in the starting rotation. It is a long season and with the way the conference tournament is set up, we will need to rely on multiple guys to carry us through, remarked Gibbs.

Relief PitchingDerek Carter returns for his third season with the varsity and will lead the relief corp. He has logged 18 total relief appearances in two years. According to Coach Gibbs, It is a luxury to have someone with Dereks experience to lead a young group of relief pitchers. Right-handers out of the pen will include junior Dan Behrman, Bobby Campbell, Tony Piz-zola and Errol Robinson and sophomore Brodie Leftridge. The only left-hander will be junior George Pulizzi.

catcherCatcher is the only position returning everyone from the 2011 squad. Senior Jerry Chavarria, a Southern University commit, caught the bulk of the games last season and had a solid year both offensively (.382, 13 RBI) and defensively. Returning backups are senior James Rader and junior Cory Paton. Jerrys experience can not be overstated when dis-cussing this team. He will be expected to lead a very inexperienced pitching staff through the tough conference schedule, said Gibbs.

InfieldThe infield will feature the biggest turnover with new starters at all four positions. While the infield will be short on experience, Coach Gibbs is expecting solid defensive performances from all starters. This is going to be a very versatile group, said Gibbs. Each of our infielders can play multiple spots which allows us a lot of options when making the lineups.

    Season Preview

Middle InfieldSenior Michael Flax will take over at shortstop. He played third, short and second last year as the backup infielder and had a solid offensive year hitting .300. His double play partner will be senior Cam kostyack. Cam will also slide over to short when Flax pitches.

Junior Josh Neal had a solid fall and is in line to be the main backup at second base going into the spring. In addition, Errol Robinson and Joe Walsh, also juniors, will be competing for time.

corner InfieldSenior Mitchell kirsch and junior Bobby Campbell are slated to start at first at third, respectively. kirsch was very productive in limited at bats during his junior season, totaling 9 RBI and 2 triples. Juniors Jake Band and Thomas, along with Pearson, will also see some time at first.

Moving up from the JV, Campbell provides excellent defense and some punch offensively. Juniors Errol Robinson and Evan Flax will open the year fighting for innings as well.

outfieldSeniors kyle Hamer and Billy Webb, both of whom saw extensive action in 2011, return to patrol right field and center field respectively. Hamer played in 27 games and finished second on the team with 15 walks. Webb had a tremendous year offensively and is the leading returning hitter at .432. James Manuel, another senior, is expected to begin the year in left field. These guys are all solid defensively and having been through a stretch run is a huge boost in experience said Gibbs.

Senior Abram White, juniors Dan Behrman, Troy White and zack Wright along with sophomore Brodie Leftridge will all be pushing for playing time.

dh and lineupAs many as eight different guys could appear in the DH spot depending on who is pitching. There will be a lot of guys fighting for these Abs, says Gibbs. We are very comfortable with all of our options in this spot. As with most positions on the squad this year, the lineup will be comprised of a lot of new faces. Despite this inexperience, however, this is a very versatile group of guys who can do a bunch of different things. The lineup will feature speed at the top and bottom with some power mixed in the middle. Overall, the Cadets should be extremely balanced offensively from top to bottom.

ScheduleThe 2012 schedule will again test the Cadets from start to finish, with seven out-of-conference matchups against 7 schools who either won or finished second in their respective conferences during the 2011 season. Locally, the schedule includes DC Classic Champion Sidwell Friends and Runner-Up Maret. Lake Braddock, AAA Region Finalist, will be wel-comed to Gibbs Field, as will 2010 MIAA Champ Gilman. St. Johns will be traveling in April to face Archbishop Spalding, who won the 2011 MIAA Championship. The southern spring trip will consist of games against Virginia Private School Champion St. Annes Belfield, Charlotte Country Day who won the Charlotte Independent School Athletic As-sociation Championship, Caldwell Academy and NCISAA Runner Up Westchester Country Day.

The WCAC will once again be the areas premier conference. As the defending tournament champs, the Cadets will be the team to beat in 2012. This conference will be extremely balanced as it was in 2011 where only 2 games separated the first and fifth seeds. The pitching from team to team looks to be as deep as any time in recent memory.

    2011 Season Review

    dirtbags Win it all

t he 2011 season was unlike any other in recent memo-ry. The season began with high expectations, with the Cadets ranked thirty-fourth in the country by Baseball America, a daunting prediction gi ven that the squad would need to replace the bulk of its pitching staff. By the time the regular season was over, the Cadets had finished outside the top two for the first time in twenty years. After a valiant playoff rally, however, these self-pro-claimed Dirtbags would eventually claim the WCAC Championship title.

Early Season VictoriesSt. Johns opened its season with an 8-0 win over eventual DC Classic champions Sidwell Friends. At home against perennial northern Vir-ginia powerhouse Lake Braddock, the Cadets claimed a 7-4 victory off the strong play of Bobby Boyd, who went three for four with two runs, and pitcher Nick Howard, who threw five shutout innings, had two hits, two runs and two RBI. Other early season accomplishments included an 11-1 win over St. Marys Ryken and a 13-4 road victory over Brooke Point, with Alex Diese throwing six strikeouts in 5 1/3 innings. The Ca-dets headed to Florida with a perfect 4-0 record.

South Florida ClassicSt. Johns played excellent baseball in the South Florida Classic, with victories over top-notch opponents and their only loss a one-run deficit

in the finals. Several Cadets had outstanding individual performances. In their first round matchup with Cambridge Christian (FL), the squad went up 5-0 in the second inning and held on for a 6-3 win. Against Battleground Academy (TN), down 6-0 at the bottom of the second, kyle Hamer hit a grand slam to narrow the margin, and after going up 7-6 in the third, the Cadets never looked back. Justin korenblatt had three hits, Bobby Boyd had two, and Nick Howard struck out seven batters in five innings for a thrilling 13-8 win. In their third outing against Florida standout Episcopal, the Cadets notched another win under korenblatts stellar play on the mound. korenblatt struck out eight batters in 6 1/3 in-nings and allowed only two runs. Michael Flax picked up the save while Joe Camp (2 for 3 with 2 RBI) and Brady Schmitt (2 for 3 with 2 doubles) highlighted the offense. In the finals, the Cadets faced IMG Academy (Bradenton, FL). Heading into the seventh, IMG had a 5-4 lead, but the Cadets tied it up off of a RBI single from Flax. After giving up a run in the bottom half of the seventh, the Cadets succumbed to a 6-5 loss.

Justin korenblatt was named Pitcher of the Tournament, Nate Meiners received the Gold Glove Award, and Nick Howard was named to the All-Tournament Team.

Conference PlayThe Cadets returned from their trip south ranked number one by the Washington Post and ready to face the meat of the conference sched-ule. In their first meeting with Good Counsel, four different Cadets would record two hits. Joe Camp hit a two-run homer, Nick Howard hit a game-tying two-run homer in the top of the seventh, and a furious

  • St. John' S BaSeBall 31

2011 Season Reviewrally netted two more runs to secure a 7-5 victory. The Cadets followed the Good Counsel win with an 11-1 rout over Gonzaga.

The squad would not see a two-game winning streak for another month, however. After being up 5-4 in the seventh, the Cadets lost to DeMatha 7-5, but then recovered with a 19-5 win against Bishop Ire-ton. The Cadets then succumbed again, this time to Paul VI in a stinging 3-0 loss at home. Despite bouncing back for a win against Bishop Mc-Namara, St. Johns suffered another 3-0 shutout at home to Gonzaga. After rebounding with a 13-3 victory over St. Marys Ryken, the Cadets were still unable to sustain a winning streak, suffering consecutive losses to nationally ranked Don Bosco (NJ) and Good Counsel 12-10.

As the final two weeks of the season approached, the Cadets were in unfamiliar territory: fifth place in the WCAC and out of the Washing-ton Post top ten. The squad kept fighting, however, and avenged their earlier loss to DeMatha, with a 2-1 victory highlighted offensively by Brady Schmitts two out, 2RBI single in the first and a complete game on the mound by Nick Howard. A winning streak continued to elude the Cadets, however, who suffered back-to-back conference losses against OConnell. With one week remaining in the season, the Ca-dets owned a 14-8 record and were looking to jump-start a late season streak to propel them into the playoffs.

On Senior Day, after jumping out 5-0 in the first, St. John s held on for a close 6-4 win against Bishop Ireton. The turning point for the Cadets came just afterwards, on a Monday night in Fairfax against Paul VI. Led by Bobby Boyd, who allowed only one earned run in five innings and was also explosive offensively (4 for 5 with 2 runs, 1 double and 1 RBI), the Cadets avenged their earlier loss, going on to win 11-3. Nick Howard had three

hits and two RBI, and Mitchell kirsch broke the game open in the second with a two-run homer over the Press Box in left center. This game led to the rise of the Dirtbags when the squad decided to wear their away grey uniforms unwashed for the remainder of the season. The Cadets finally earned consecutive wins, ending the regular season with an 8-0 win over McNamara on korenblatts two hits and seven strikeouts in four innings. St. Johns headed into the playoffs seeded fifth with a 17-8 record.

PlayoffsThe Cadets entered the quarterfinals on the road against Bishop OConnell, having lost to them twice in the last three weeks. History did not repeat itself. Instead, led by Alex Dieses solid pitching perfor-mance and strong hitting from six of the starters, the Cadets showed they would not go quietly. Brady Schmitt (3 for 3, 3 runs and 4 RBI), Jerry Chavarria (2 for 4, with one run, 3 RBI and a critical third inning homer) and Billy Webb (a double, RBI and 2 runs) led the charge, with the Cadets earning a decisive 17-2 win.

In the semifinals, the Cadets faced top seed Good Counsel, with the two teams having split the regular season earning road wins. Game one of the series saw the Cadets jump out on top after Billy Webb doubled to right center and drove in the games first run. At the top of the third, the Cadets expanded the lead off a Brady Schmitt suicide squeeze and an RBI single by Jerry Chavarria, but the Falcons drew even at the bottom of the inning. Good Counsel threatened to expand the lead in the sixth but a game-saving play by Nate Meiners, who made a diving stop on a ground ball and prevented the runner from scoring, and then threw the hitter out at first, allowed the Cadets to head into the seventh tied at three. kirsch

led off with a single, and advanced to second on a bunt by Webb. Bobby Boyd then roped a double into right center, scoring kirsch and giving St. Johns the lead 4-3 Good Counsel threatened again but the Cadets held on for their first semi-final victory. In game two of the series, Billy Webb delivered again. Holding a 2-1 advantage in the fourth, Webb smacked a two-out single up the middle, scoring two runs. On the mound, Justin korenblatt pitched 6 1/3 innings, striking out six and allowing only one run. Alex Diese came in for the save and St. Johns headed to the finals.

Championship SeriesThe Cadets were thrilled to be back in the championship for the first time since 2007, and to face DeMatha, whom they had never beaten in the finals. In game one of the series, junior lefthander Alex Diese turned in a stellar performance with a seven-inning shutout, striking out seven batters, walking one, and allowing only two runners to advance to second base. Once again, Boyd, korenblatt and Webb led the offense. Boyd had two RBI, korenblatt went two for four with two doubles, and Webb notched his third two-out RBI of the playoffs, earning the Cadets a spectacular 5-0 win. In game two, DeMatha went up 4-0 in the first off of an error and three hits but was held scoreless the rest of the game. The Cadets mounted a rally, scoring a run in the fifth and two in the sixth, but fell one run short. Jerry Chavarria led the offense with two hits and Howard went the distance with seven strikeouts.

With the series tied going into game three, St. Johns sent Bobby Boyd to the mound. Down 1-0 early, the Cadets responded in the top of the second with a two-run sacrifice fly by kirsch and yet another two out RBI from Billy Webb. In the third, a huge two-run homer by Joe Camp pushed the score to 4-1, and Howard sealed the game with a grand slam in the fourth. The final score was 10-3 and the Cadets had earned their first title since 2005.

Season Honors Several Cadets were honored locally for their outstanding perfor-mances on the year. Nick Howard was named first team All-Met by the Washington Post and also received first team All-WCAC honors. Bobby Boyd also was named first team All-WCAC and second team All-Met. Justin korenblatt and Alex Diese both received Honorable Mention by the Post and the WCAC.
