The calendar turns to September and off we go! September brings many things: longer nights, cooler temperatures, changing leaves. Most importantly at St. John’s, September marks the start of the program year for 2018-19. There is so much life in this place when the program year begins!
I experienced it in reverse: May was busy and bustling, with the program year winding down; summer had a different energy. During the program year, hundreds of children learn and grow in our Nursery School and Head Start classrooms. Christian Education classes for all ages facilitate and stimulate spiritual growth. Rehearsals resume for our musical groups the Belltones, the Bells of St. John’s, and the Senior Choir, praising God in song. Our ministry teams re-organize for the year on September 5. Opportunities for mission and ministry abound. St. John’s UCC is alive, indeed!
We will celebrate a significant event in our life together on Sunday, September 9: my installation as your pastor. What does this mean? What exactly is an installation? In the United Church of Christ, an installation is the recognition of the covenant that exists between pastor and congregation. We make promises to one another; we affirm our relationship; and we say “yes” to each other. And it is a party. It is a celebration of our ministry together thus far and the ministry that we will continue to do together in the future. Come for the worship service (3 pm), stay for the reception!
September is exciting! In ministry and in love, we are called to be the church. May we be guided by God, led by Jesus, and sustained by the Holy Spirit.
“Gather us in and hold us forever; gather us in and make us your own; gather us in, all peoples together, fire of love in our flesh and our bone.”
Peace, Pastor Caroline

The Concentration Camp Choir
Some time ago one of our choir members handed me an article from
the “Guardian” and I would like to summarize this article for you.
In 1944 Adolf Eichmann hosted representatives from the
International Red Cross to visit the Terezin Concentration Camp
which usually held about 60,000 inmates. Elaborate preparations
were made to move many prisoners out to other camps as to make
this camp look uncrowded and very inviting. The inmate choir of 150
voices was chosen to sing and they sang Verdi’s “Requiem” This
piece features a fearsome evocation of fire, promises of posthumous
punishment and dire warnings of God’s wrath. The Nazis’ knew not
how to handle this for the Jews were singing a Christian prayer for the
dead. The music was very difficult and had to be learned by rote from
a single score sheet with practice after long days of hard labor and a
cup of gruel. The music is very difficult to learn under ideal
conditions. The choir gave 16
performances from 1943 to 1944 and
was then sent to Auschwitz. This story
is told by survivor Murry Sidlin, a
professor at Catholic University, who
said that being in the choir gave them
something to think about and they
looked forward to the next rehearsal.
The choir’s singing was an act of moral
resistance and it gave them hope for the
future. Oh, the power of music!

in Fayetteville. They service one hundred families in Fayetteville, Mont
Alto, and South Mountain. Area farmers provide fresh produce by
allowing volunteers to glean their fields. Financial donations are greatly
appreciated as they allow the Pantry to buy items in bulk.
A collection will be accepted after worship on Sunday, September 23.
Checks may be made out to St. John’s noting the Fayetteville Food
Pantry in the memo line.
Get ready, get set, walk!
Mark your calendars for CROP Hunger Walk! Join us on Sunday, October 21st!

A MESSAGE FROM CALLED TO CARE:
A friendly reminder about our Prayer Shawl ministry chaired by
Nina Widmann (717-264-4958) and our Caring Cooks ministry
chaired by Lisa Frantz (717-264-3066). If you know of someone in
need of a prayer shawl reminder of God’s love, please let Nina know.
Offering meals to our fellow church members is an age-old tradition
here at St. John’s. When a fellow member is in need, simply contact
Lisa Frantz (in her absence the church office). Lisa will facilitate
your request with the Caring Cooks team and determine who is
available to provide the meal(s).
Our thanks to everyone who remembers our homebound members
and friends of St. John’s. Homebound status can be temporary or
permanent. If the church is aware of a hospitalization, a temporary
stay in a facility, or a homebound member, we work to help keep the
church in touch with the person and let them know they are an
important part of our St. John’s family. So please help us by keeping
the church informed of these situations.
Blessings and Peace,
Connie Morrill-Hair

Ladies Luncheon Nine ladies (including Pastor Caroline for the first time!) had a private corner at Windy Knoll
Farm Market on Wednesday, August 8. After a variety of sandwiches were enjoyed, nine
different flavors of their super ice cream were also sampled. HOOVER’s on Route 30 will be
the site for September 12th. The time is now 12 noon (Pastor Caroline’s lunch hour so she can
join us if she is able). This meeting is rather important as the decision will be made as to HOW
THE REMAINING FUNDS (mostly acquired by the quilters) will be spent on some special
St. John’ project. This will be the FIRST MEETING of the new church year so if YOU have
been thinking of joining the Luncheon Ladies NOW IS THE TIME!

SAFE CHURCH CLEARANCES
We are all proud to say that St. John’s is a Safe Church and that children, youth and
vulnerable adults are safe and secure when they take part in our programs and activities.
To be certain that continues we must be ever vigilant in our efforts to be sure everyone who
participates in activities involving children, youth or vulnerable adults has a St. John’s Safe
Church Clearance. To obtain such a clearance all you need to do is stop in the church office
and pick up a packet of information which will walk you through the process which is done
mostly online and requires you to have a personal email address.
If you have a problem with the process you may call the office to make an APPOINTMENT
to come into the church for a staff person or trained volunteer to help you with the process.
REMEMBER
These applications are processed by State agencies and sometimes take up to 6 weeks. You
can’t wait until the last minute to apply for a clearance if you think you might want to help
with a ministry or activity such as VBS, Nursery Care, Camp, Sunday School, or Called to
Care. Apply well in advance. Clearances are good for 5 years.
Safety & Security campaign update:
THANK YOU for your generous support of the Safety & Security campaign, approved
at the Congregational Meeting in June.
So far we have purchased & installed special ID cameras at the front and back doors,
plus classroom deadbolt locks and Plexiglas classroom door windows.
Items on order include: classroom door security blinds (due around mid-September)
Professional two-way multi-channel radios for Nursery School and Head Start
classrooms, plus SJUCC staff, are in but we await our FCC operating license due in the
next couple of weeks. We currently have funds to cover these items, but need to add
security cameras to cover the front & back parking lots, plus the playground area and
garage. This will require an additional $6900.
Thank you for your continued support to protect our young students and staff, as well
as all who participate in our ministries.

Beginning on Sunday, September 9th, 9:00 am, the Upper Room Sunday
School Class led by Connie Strunk will resume in the Conference Room. We
will study the Daily Devotional, The Upper Room, a daily scripture and learn a
new bible verse each month.
The Upper Room's mission is to provide a practical way to listen to scripture,
connect with believers around the world, and spend time with God each day.
We are a fun group. We put our pocket change into a mason jar each week and
use those funds to help those in need. We pray together and share our
joys and our concerns. We reach out to those in our backyard, across the nation
and around the world.
We gather together at different times of the year in different homes to celebrate
and give thanks to God for the goodness of life Please join us. There is always
room for many more to gather around the table in The Upper Room.
To learn more about the history of The Upper Room, take some time and read
the history of it’s beginning at https://www.upperroom.org/about/history.
A Thank You Note from Connie Strunk
I thank the many members of the Upper Room Sunday School Class for their kind words and
thoughtfulness towards me. I was recently gifted with a lovely card and a generous remem-
brance from the class.
I also thank those class members who, from time to time, willingly agree to serve as class
leaders. Thanks to Lisa Frantz, Nancy Hartman, Cathy Kinton, and Nina Widmann.

Ernie’s Sunday School Class
Re-starting on September 9th, the adult Sunday school
class taught by Ernie Welch in Room 7 (9:00 am to
9:50 am) will be studying the following scriptural
sections:
In the fall, “The Words of Jesus Only”
will be a study of Jesus’ sermons,
prayers, and discourses.
In the winter, the sessions will examine,
analyze, and discuss Paul’s First Letter
to the Corinthians.
In the spring, the third of the tri-semester
topics will be a study of Paul’s Second
Letter to the Corinthians.
All are welcome to come and participate. Each Sunday’s
lesson is a stand-alone entity requiring no homework or
prior preparation.
