repair it, but in His own way and
his own time. This means that
you and I live in a world that is
untamed. Nature can cause
tragedy. Think of the randomness
of the fires in Colorado Springs,
taking one house but sparing
another, determined by a mere
breath of wind. We all have been
given a freedom that is much like
nature itself. We make decisions,
putting ourselves in various
situations, some containing
dangers we could never
anticipate. Life delicately hangs
in the balance as a slight
misperception at an intersection
can cause a
terrible tragedy.
From there it gets
a bit mysterious.
Somehow, in some
way God is still
there. It is still His
world. In tragic
situations this can
be more easily
seen in how things end rather
than in how they begin. One of
the great professors I had at the
seminary was Dr. Martin
Scharleman. I think he had
served as a military chaplain
during World War Two. He told us
that God works with us in much
the same way as the Allied plan
You may have heard that on
June 1st something terrible
happened. Arnold and Lila Spike
were in an automobile accident.
Lila died at the accident. Two
days later Arnold died from his
injuries. Such things leave us
speechless, and yet somehow we
struggle on together to try to
make sense of it. Arni and Lila’s
family bravely began to speak
about the ways in which they
could see God in the midst of
what had happened.
I have seen
families struggle in
these moments
with just how it is
that we can talk
about tragedy and
still see God’s
benevolent hand in
such moments.
This can be tricky.
Let me give you a
couple of important ideas that I
think, are essential for finding
God in such moments.
Most important is to hold onto
the idea that God does not cause
tragedy or harm. God created a
perfect world where bad things
simply did not happen. That world
was broken by sin. God
immediately pledged to

on D-Day. Apparently they laid out
the strategy to storm the beach
on D-Day in the form of three
large ring binders. Depending on
what happened in the first
moments of the invasion the plan
would then go to one of the three
binders. From there each binder
contained separate strands of
strategy depending on what
would happen next. Scharleman
told us that in many ways God is
like this. He waits to see what we
will choose and at each point he
then has a move ready of how he
can turn it into something that is
blessed.
What this means for us is that
when tragedy happens God is
ready. God did not plan the
tragedy but he was ready once it
happens. Psalm 46 puts it this
way, “God is our refuge and
strength, an ever present help in
trouble. Therefore we will not
fear, though the earth give way
and the mountains fall into the
heart of the sea.” Further in the
psalm there comes powerful
advice for any of us who are ever
struck by an enormous challenge,
“Be still, and know that I am God;
I will be exalted among the
nations, I will be exalted in the
earth.” To me this suggests that
when tragedy strikes we can turn
in expectation and wait. God will
show himself in a powerful way.
Some people must wait long
and hard before seeing God. The
Spike family seemed to find
quickly. God pointed them toward
how this couple who were about
to celebrate their 60th wedding
anniversary could go together,
united somehow, just as they had
been in life. Both were spared the
hardship of having to survive
without the other. For me
personally the story of Arni and
Lila’s life and death is powerful
testimony to what a beautiful
thing God can create in a
marriage. Paul says in Romans
14, “None of us lives to himself
alone and none of us dies to
himself alone.” For me this
passage has always spoken
about how our lives can be
weaved together. I know that
some people go through life
merely living in the same house.
But in God’s eyes it is possible for
two lives to become one.
In Matthew 19 Jesus quotes
Genesis and says, “Haven’t you
read that at the beginning the
Creator made them male and
female, and said, ‘For this reason
a man will leave his father and
mother and be united to his wife,
and the two will become one
flesh’? So they are no longer two,
but one. Therefore what God has
joined together, let man not
separate.” Somehow through the
life of Arni and Lila Spike I am
more convinced of the profound
depth of Jesus’ truth.
My prayer for you is that God
will speak to you through the best
and the worst of what is to come.
He is a good God, all of the time.

From the desk of Pastor Meyer
“There’s no place like home.”
“Home is where the heart is.” “A
house is not a home.” These
three phrases have been
running through my mind as of
late, and they lead me to ask the
question, “so then, what it is that
makes a home?” It’s not the
brick and mortar or the green
grass (although there was a song
that talked about the green
green grass of home, I believe.)
No, it seems to me that
‘home’ denotes a level of
relationship within those who
claim it for themselves. There
is a level of security, trust,
honesty, integrity and reliance
that make up a home, and
these things cannot happen
outside the context of
relationships.
You know, the same is true for
the Church. The New Testament
throughout its pages uses the
word, “koinonia,” to describe it.
“Community” would be the word
that we would use, and this is
the backdrop or the narrative for
which God instituted the Church.
God’s people were not designed
to live apart from one another.
In fact, if you take the time to
read Acts 2:42-47 you will find
quite a description of the early
Church. It was a group of people
that were “devoted” to a set of
tangible things. And God was
pleased with that devotion, and
immensely blessed them. [this
would be the point where you
would find your
Bible and look
that passage
up.]
With
summer finally
coming upon
us, it is easy to see and
understand the many and
various ways that cabin fever is
being dealt with. I know my golf
clubs have been calling out my
name for a couple of weeks
now. It makes perfect sense to
enjoy all that God has entrusted
to us as His creation.
Please take a moment
though, too, to ponder this
verse, written by Paul in
Corinth: “Now you are the body
of Christ, and each one of you
is a part of it.” 1 Corinthians
12:27 That’s each and every
one of us! Each and every one
of you is an integral part of the
body of Christ at St. John’s, and
please hear what I am saying to
you: you are important! God
has placed you at this point in
time where you need to be, and
has given you a family and a
home in which you can be fed
and nourished with His Word
and through His Sacraments. It
is an incredible gift and an
awesome privilege to be a part
of this body.
We have the ability to
encourage one another, to spur
(Continued on page 5)

one another on, to lift one
another up and to help one
another carry the burdens of life
as we are strengthened with the
peace that passes all human
understanding. Christ Jesus
has set you free to live in that
freedom – the freedom to be
the child of God He created you
to be!
I hope you find this as a
message of joy, as I do. I am
humbled and honored to be
able to pray with and for you. I
take great delight in being able
to share the message of God’s
Word with you on a regular
basis. You my friends, are my
brothers and sisters in Christ!
“A royal priesthood, a holy
nation, a people belonging to
God,” Peter writes in 1 Peter
2:9-10. Let us join together in
“declaring the deeds of Him
who has called us out of
darkness, into His marvelous
light!” Let us BE the Church!
In His Service,

Women In Mission A woman recently visited the
church office and asked for a copy
of the Summer issue of the Luther-
an Woman’s Quarterly, the official
LWML magazine. Her daughter’s
article, “My Hidden Self” by Melody
Rosenwinkel is the cover story.
When Pastor Meyer picked up the
Quarterly, he recognized Melody
as someone he knew. Here’s the
link for the story, http://

are many great articles and won-
derful Bible studies in it.
The MN South District LWML
Women’s Retreat, “Everything Un-
der Heaven” will be held July 25-
27 at Gustavus Aldophus in St.
Peter. For more details, look at

Thanks!
We are still prayerfully looking
for a team to head the 45th Annual
Country Fair for Missions on No-
vember 9th. We have experienced
people, and detailed records to
help you every step of the way.
Prayerfully consider being part of
this important project. The funds
we raise benefits many missions
and other worthy projects. We’ll
have a Planning Meeting on Sep-
tember 5th for everyone interested
in helping.
We know many of you are work-
ing on projects for the Country Fair.
When the weather is hot and hu-
mid, it’s nice to take a break inside
to make any number of things for
the fair. A crafting group is meeting
at church on selected Tuesdays
during the summer, and they wel-
come you to join them, making
items and having fun.
We appreciate each one of you
who helps us in so many ways.

“Stand Strong for God!”
Kingdom Rock is filled with incredible Bible learning experi-
ences that kids see, hear, touch and even taste! Kids will love
God like never before, serve God like never before, and have
the time of their lives doing it! But we can’t take this adventure
without your help! From donations, to registration, to teaching
and crew leaders, there are many places for you to be a part of
this adventure.
Here are some ideas of what your role can be:
Crew Leader: Through out the week kids travel in small
groups to stations with their crews and leader. Crew leaders
are not Teachers! They’re simply part of the Crew family.
They participate in all the activities and encourage kids to
talk about and apply what they are learning. Love kids, but
hate to teach! This is the place for you.
Station Leader: Instead of leading independent, isolated
classes, Station Leaders see all the kids each day. There are
seven different stations and kids will visit each one every day.
Each station features a different Bible learning activity to
meet the needs of different kinds of learners. Teachers will
be in pairs for each station.
Donate Supplies: From the beginning of June to July 14th,
pick up tags in the Narthex for the snacks and supplies we
need for VBS.
No matter your age or interest, there is a place for you at Kingdom Rock!
