Opening Acclamation

Celebrant: Blessed be God: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. People: And blessed be his kingdom, now and for ever. Celebrant: There is one Body and one Spirit; People: There is one hope in God’s call to us; Celebrant: One Lord, one Faith, one Baptism; People: One God and Father of all.

Collect of the Day

Celebrant: The Lord be with you. People: And also with you. Celebrant: Let us pray.

Everlasting God, you have ordained and constituted in a wonderful order the ministries of angels and mortals: Mercifully grant that, as your holy angels always serve and worship you in heaven, so by your appointment they may help and defend us here on earth; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

The First Lesson A Reading from the Book of Genesis Genesis 28:10-17

Jacob left Beer-sheba and went toward Haran. He came to a certain place and stayed there for the night, because the sun had set. Taking one of the stones of the place, he put it under

Page 3: St. John’s Episcopal Church, Georgetown Parish Sunday ... · and all that is within me, bless his holy Name. Bless the LORD, O my soul, * ... Sermon The Rev. Sarah Duggin, ... Rector

his head and lay down in that place. And he dreamed that there was a ladder set up on the earth, the top of it reaching to heaven; and the angels of God were ascending and descending on it. And the LORD stood beside him and said, "I am the LORD, the God of Abraham your father and the God of Isaac; the land on which you lie I will give to you and to your offspring; and your offspring shall be like the dust of the earth, and you shall spread abroad to the west and to the east and to the north and to the south; and all the families of the earth shall be blessed in you and in your offspring. Know that I am with you and will keep you wherever you go, and will bring you back to this land; for I will not leave you until I have done what I have promised you." Then Jacob woke from his sleep and said, "Surely the LORD is in this place-- and I did not know it!" And he was afraid, and said, "How awesome is this place! This is none other than the house of God, and this is the gate of heaven."

The Word of the Lord. People: Thanks be to God.

Psalm 103:1-9, 21-22 Anglican Chant: PYE

Bless the LORD, O my soul, * and all that is within me, bless his holy Name.

Bless the LORD, O my soul, * and forget not all his benefits.

He forgives all your sins * and heals all your infirmities;

He redeems your life from the grave * and crowns you with mercy and loving-kindness;

He satisfies you with good things, * and your youth is renewed like an eagle's.

The LORD executes righteousness * and judgment for all who are oppressed.

He made his ways known to Moses * and his works to the children of Israel.

The LORD is full of compassion and mercy, * slow to anger and of great kindness.

He will not always accuse us, * nor will he keep his anger for ever.

Page 4: St. John’s Episcopal Church, Georgetown Parish Sunday ... · and all that is within me, bless his holy Name. Bless the LORD, O my soul, * ... Sermon The Rev. Sarah Duggin, ... Rector

Bless the LORD, all you his hosts, * you ministers of his who do his will.

Bless the LORD, all you works of his, in all places of his dominion; * bless the LORD, O my soul.

The Second Lesson A Reading from the Book of Revelation Revelation 12:7-12 War broke out in heaven; Michael and his angels fought against the dragon. The dragon and his angels fought back, but they were defeated, and there was no longer any place for them in heaven. The great dragon was thrown down, that ancient serpent, who is called the Devil and Satan, the deceiver of the whole world-- he was thrown down to the earth, and his angels were thrown down with him. Then I heard a loud voice in heaven, proclaiming, "Now have come the salvation and the power

and the kingdom of our God and the authority of his Messiah,

for the accuser of our comrades has been thrown down, who accuses them day and night before our God.

But they have conquered him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony,

for they did not cling to life even in the face of death. Rejoice then, you heavens

and those who dwell in them! But woe to the earth and the sea,

for the devil has come down to you with great wrath,

because he knows that his time is short!"

The Word of the Lord. People: Thanks be to God.

Please stand for the sequence hymn and remain standing until the sermon begins.

The Gospel John 1:47-51

The Holy Gospel of Our Lord Jesus Christ According to John People: Glory to you, Lord Christ.

When Jesus saw Nathanael coming toward him, he said of him, "Here is truly an Israelite

in whom there is no deceit!" Nathanael asked him, "Where did you get to know me?" Jesus

answered, "I saw you under the fig tree before Philip called you." Nathanael replied,

"Rabbi, you are the Son of God! You are the King of Israel!" Jesus answered, "Do you

believe because I told you that I saw you under the fig tree? You will see greater things than

these." And he said to him, "Very truly, I tell you, you will see heaven opened and the

angels of God ascending and descending upon the Son of Man."

The Gospel of the Lord People: Praise to you, Lord Christ.

Please be seated for the sermon.

The Offertory Anthem: Angels SIMON LOLE Bright beings from the realm of light, Messengers from the Lord of Might!

Silent as dawn and swift as sound, Your presence shines where God is found.

Unseen as air, in fiery power,

Angelic hordes make demons cower, And won with Christ in holy fight Salvation's gift from human plight.

The sun's bright beams bring light to earth,

And angels bless our pain and mirth, May angel hosts transport us high

To God in heaven when we die.

Please stand.

Presentation Hymn LASST UNS ERFREUEN

THE HOLY COMMUNION

Holy Eucharist Rite II, Prayer A The people remain standing.

Celebrant: The Lord be with you. People: And also with you. Celebrant: Lift up your hearts. People: We lift them to the Lord. Celebrant: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. People: It is right to give our thanks and praise.

It is right, and a good and joyful thing, always and everywhere to give thanks to you, Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth. And now we give you thanks and praise your holy name because the splendour of your faithful angels and archangels shows us your greatness, which surpasses in goodness the whole of creation.

Page 8: St. John’s Episcopal Church, Georgetown Parish Sunday ... · and all that is within me, bless his holy Name. Bless the LORD, O my soul, * ... Sermon The Rev. Sarah Duggin, ... Rector

So as the hosts of angels rejoice in your glory, we give you, their Creator, glory and worship. In adoration and joy we make their hymn of praise our own:

Sanctus JAMES MACMILLAN

The people may stand or kneel as the celebrant continues.

Holy and gracious Father: In your infinite love you made us for yourself; and, when we had fallen into sin and become subject to evil and death, you, in your mercy, sent Jesus Christ, your only and eternal Son, to share our human nature, to live and die as one of us, to reconcile us to you, God and Father of all. He stretched out his arms upon the cross, and offered himself, in obedience to your will, a perfect sacrifice for the whole world.

On the night he was handed over to suffering and death, our Lord Jesus Christ took bread; and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, and said, “Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.”

After supper he took the cup of wine; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and said, “Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me.”

Page 9: St. John’s Episcopal Church, Georgetown Parish Sunday ... · and all that is within me, bless his holy Name. Bless the LORD, O my soul, * ... Sermon The Rev. Sarah Duggin, ... Rector

Therefore we proclaim the mystery of faith:

Celebrant and People Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again. We celebrate the memorial of our redemption, O God, in this sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving. Recalling his death, resurrection, and ascension, we offer you these gifts. Sanctify them by your Holy Spirit to be for your people the Body and Blood of your Son, the holy food and drink of new and unending life in him. Sanctify us also that we may faithfully receive this holy Sacrament, and serve you in unity, constancy, and peace; and at the last day bring us with all your saints into the joy of your eternal kingdom. All this we ask through your Son Jesus Christ. By him, and with him, and in him, in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honor and glory is yours, Almighty God, now and forever. AMEN.

And now, as our savior Jesus Christ has taught us, we are bold to say:

Music at Communion Motet: Factum est silentium RICHARD DERING

Silence befell heaven, for a serpent was waging war; and Michael fought with him

and emerged victorious. Thousands upon thousands of voices were heard

proclaiming health, honor, virtue and glory to Almighty God. Alleluia.

Post-Communion Prayer Celebrant: Let us pray.

Celebrant and People

Lord of heaven, in this eucharist you have brought us near to an innumerable company of angels and to the spirits of the saints made perfect: as in this food of our earthly pilgrimage we have shared their fellowship, so may we come to

share their joy in heaven; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

The Blessing

God keep you in the fellowship of his saints; Christ protect you by the ministry of the angels; the Spirit make you holy in God’s service; and the blessing of God almighty, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, be among you and remain with you always. Recessional Hymn 625 Ye holy angels bright DARWALL’S 148TH

In order to help us learn as much as we can, we will be asking everyone over the age of 13 to answer the survey for him or herself. The survey is available now through October 1st.
