If you wish to become a member of the prayer chain, please call Jane Gerend at 715-387-2019 or Ann Bohnert at 715-389-2726. Catholic Kidz Camp was a great success! Fifty-five children learned about five different Saints and the virtues of Faith, Hope, and Love during the day. Twenty teens explored the theme: God Is Not Dead during the evening program. Thank you to all of the volunteers and donors that made this week possible! The 2014 Choir Concert CD is now available! If you were able to attend the concert, you will remember how beautiful the sound of music was. If you were not able to attend, now is your chance to hear for yourself. Sit back and listen to songs such as; Via Dolorosa, Behold the Lamb of God, Canon in D, Jesus, Gentle Love - just to name a few. To purchase the 2014 CD stop in the parish office during business hours (9:00am - 5:00pm). Cost for the CD is $5.00. Back to school time is almost here and once again the ladies of St. John PCCW will donate supplies to St. John’s primary and CCD teachers. The following supplies have been suggested: washable Sharpie markers, #2 pencils, red lead pencils, red, blue, & black pens, Sticky Pak (glue), 2-pocket folders, notebooks, crayons, Post It notes, scotch tape refills, white cardstock, and kleenex. Please place donations in the box at the back of church. Thank you for your generous response. Bible Study - The Creed in Scripture: Join us for this 6-week Bible Study that will lead us through the Creed with the reading of corresponding Scripture, clarifying its meaning, reflecting on each passage, and then responding in prayer and action. We will meet every Tues. starting on Sept. 30th in the Bride’s room of St. John’s. Register by calling Carol Jonas at 715-676-3989 by September 22nd. Marian Retreat coming this fall. St. John’s will offer the Marian retreat "33 Days to Morning Glory" beginning on Sat., Nov. 1st and running through Sat., Dec. 6th (Consecration Day). With the book, 33 Days to Morning Glory and the accompanying group-retreat materials, consisting of six 30-minute DVD lessons by Fr. Michael Gaitley, MIC, this retreat leads us to entrust ourselves to Mary, the way Christ did at the Annunciation and as He willed for us at the foot of the Cross. More information concerning this retreat will be coming soon. Contact Gretchen M. Gotz at (920) 737-2350. The time is fast approaching! The Great Adventure Bible Timeline starts Sun., Sept. 7th at 8:00am, immediately following the 7:00am Mass. FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK Praised be Jesus Christ! I promised a couple of weeks ago to share with you how watching soap operas changed my life. I hope you realize I was joking. My Dad was fiercely opposed to those shows when we were kids and looking back I can see how right he was to condemn them. Now if you’re wondering what I would recommend instead, here’s a list of the films I’ve enjoyed and that come most quickly to mind. I think my favorite movie is still “Life is Beautiful” with Roberto Benigni. You can watch it in Italian with subtitles or dubbed over in English. It’s one of the finest treatments of life and suffering through the eyes of a Jewish family during World War II. A movie I just watched and loved is “Saving Mr. Banks”. This true story tells about the making of Disney’s “Mary Poppins”. It’s a very powerful movie and is sure to entice you to watch the old classic with a very different perspective than ever before. Now just in case some of the men in the parish are reading this and wondering if I like any manly movies.... I enjoyed the Jason Bourne trilogy (“Bourne Identity”, “Bourne Supremacy” and “Bourne Ultimatum”) because the plot is believable and the violence is relatively minimal. Frankly, Jason Bourne is the antithesis of James Bond – the former is not a womanizer and he only hurts unwillingly. Other movies I’ve enjoyed include “The Incredibles” (I like many of the Pixar movies – e.g. “Finding Nemo” made me laugh over and over again), “Invincible” (the true story of Vince Papale and the Philadelphia Eagles), “Walk the Line” (the story of Johnny Cash), and “The Emperor’s Club” (a movie I showed my students for years – it teaches some great life lessons). Now I could continue this “Siskel and Ebert” version of the Sunday bulletin.... however, I’d like to turn your attention to two other movies that I found very beneficial because of what they taught me. The first is “King Corn” and it’s about two Harvard students who decided to figure out how food is produced in the United States. After watching that movie I’ve been very careful about consuming high fructose corn syrup! Another movie of the same genre is “Food, Inc.” and I highly recommend it. What I liked about these movies is that they demonstrate the extraordinarily important role played by the farmers of the world. Good food comes from men and women who often labor more out of love than for riches. However, like everything else in the world, agriculture can be corrupted by money too and these movies show us things we should be concerned about. In the end, the movies remind me that the Catholic principle of subsidiarity (i.e. local folks handling local needs) is still the best approach. If you want to support our local farmers (and gardeners!), then do so by the way you shop for groceries. Moreover, come on out to the Central Wisconsin State Fair in Marshfield and show the farmers we’re grateful for all they do to keep us healthy and strong. Oh, and please pass the deep fried Oreos! May God bless us with favorable weather so that we may eat well and wisely! Your friend in Christ, Father Martin

NOTES FROM FR. MARTIN The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) is beginning on September 4th, 2014 with full entrance into the church occurring at Easter of 2015. RCIA is the process whereby a person learns about the beautiful Catholic faith that we sometimes take for granted. Please pick up a brochure at the entrance of the church if you or someone you know is interested in becoming Catholic or if you just want to deepen your understanding of the faith. This will be an excellent way to grow closer to God by learning about Catholicism and how it promotes heroic goodness! For more information, contact Dcn. Jeff Austin at 715-676-3186 or Jane Gerend at 715-387-2019. Sister Act II - We're grateful to God for building a bridge between St. John's and Tanzania in the person of Sister Sabina. We first "met" Sister via Skype back in February, and then in person when she visited us in July. Thanks to the heroic generosity of our parishioners, we are wiring her religious order $13,000.00 so as to help build a much-needed convent. Now that we've put our toe in the water, we'd like to form a Marshfield Mission Club. If you'd like to join us, please come to an organizational meeting on Monday, September 15th at 6:30pm in the Columbia room. SOS!! A new global atrocity presents itself for our consideration in prayerful and financial support at this time. That atrocity is the organized annihilation and planned extinction of our Christian brothers and sisters in the Mid-East. Escalating violence in northern and central Iraq has caused devastation and the displacement of 1.2 million people since January. Fear looms as the Islamic State of Iraq and greater Syria (ISIS) has taken control over large areas of the northern provinces. Religious minorities including Christians, Shia Muslims, and Turkmen have been singled out for attack. Pope Francis launched an appeal for unity, calling for “security, peace and a future of reconciliation and justice, where all Iraqis, whatever their religion, could build their nation together, creating a model of coexistence.” Over the next 6 months, Catholic Relief Services will provide support to 30,000 families, along with an initial commitment of $650,000 in private funds. If you would like, you can contribute to this cause or get more information directly from CRS at: http://emergencies.crs.org/iraq-crs-caritas-reach-displaced-families/ The annual diocesan Gospel of Life Celebration will be held Wednesday evening, September 17th at Immaculate Conception Parish in Eau Claire. Bishop William Callahan will celebrate Mass at 6:00pm. At 7:00pm in the parish hall, John Morales will give the keynote presentation:“Pro-Life Champions: Winning Hearts and Minds.” Morales is a veteran TV sports reporter who has often been heard on Relevant Radio. He is also producer of “40,” a powerful film documentary exploring the abortion debate in the 40 years since Roe v. Wade. In his talk, Morales will emphasize why we should be full of courage and hope. He will also share how abortion painfully touched his own life, and show a brief excerpt from “40.” All are invited. The parish is at 1712 Highland Ave. in Eau Claire.

Pro-Life Minute Fact: Embryologists universally agree that life begins at the moment of conception. Yet proponents of embryonic stem cell research seek to destroy embryonic children and harvest their cells. May our nation be blessed with the grace to recognize that no person should be killed in the name of science. (Sponsored by Pro-Life Wisconsin.)

Has God blessed you? Would you like to share that gift with others? Consider becoming a catechist for our Religious Edu-cation program! Contact Deb Mlsna at 715-613-4458 for more de-tails! Registration for CCD is Sept. 10th at 6:30pm in the church.
