Catholic Social Teaching Corner Sept 7-8, 23rd Sunday in Ordinary Time

How much are we willing to give up to be a follower of

Jesus? In the Gospel, Jesus asks us to let go of everything

important and dear to us: family, friends, possessions, position

and even our very selves. Have we calculated the cost of

discipleship? Philemon in the second reading had to give up

social status in order to receive his runaway slave as a brother

as Paul asked. Do we accept as brothers and sisters those whom

society rejects because of Christ? How do we live that out?

Septiembre 7-8, 23ro.

Saint John Chrysostom, Archbishop of

Constantinople, was an important Early

Church Father. He is known for his

preaching and public speaking, his

denunciation of abuse of authority by both

political and church leaders, the Divine

Liturgy of Saint John Chrysostom, and his

practices of self-denial for the love of God. The nickname

‘Chrysostom’ means "golden-mouthed" in Greek and denotes his

celebrated speaking eloquence. Chrysostom was among the most

prolific authors in the early Christian Church.

Twenty-Third Sunday in Ordinary Time

Luke 14: 25-33

Jesus teaches about the demands of discipleship. In chapter 14 of Luke's Gospel, Jesus is speaking to

people gathered at the table about the difficulties of following him.

Jesus speaks to them in parables, emphasizing that although there

is a right way to be a disciple and enter into the kingdom of his

Father, it is a difficult path to follow.

Provide your children with a list of things that they are

responsible for interspersed with things that they like to do—for

example, make their beds, take out the garbage, go to the park, do

homework, watch television, have a snack, feed the cat. The list

should reflect their responsibilities and favorite recreations. Tell

them to pretend that company is coming and ask which of the

things listed should be done first. Explain that this is called setting

priorities.

Paraphrase the Gospel story for the children. Ask them what

Jesus says is the most important thing for them to do. Jesus tells us

that the number-one priority is to follow him. But just as it is not

always easy to do the things we are supposed to do before doing

the fun things, it is not always easy to be a follower of Jesus. Yet

when we put Jesus first, we will be truly happy.

Good works are links that form a chain of love."

--- Saint Teresa of Calcutta
