St. John’s Lutheran Church Serving the Lord for 115 years March 2020

Endurance Fruit

No, I’m not going to tell you about the latest miracle food that will give you amazing stamina and strength. The en-durance fruit I want to talk about is not something you eat, but something that happens as a result of the resurrection. In the 20th chapter of John’s gospel, we read the following:

“19 On the evening of that day, the first day of the week, the doors being locked where the disciples were for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood among them and said to them,

“Peace be with you.” 20 When he had said this, he showed them his hands and his side. Then the disciples were glad when they saw the Lord.”

The first fruit of the risen Christ coming to us is peace. The disciples were terrified that they were going to be the next ones on Roman crosses. Besides that, they had all abandoned Jesus in his hour of need. They probably hadn’t dared to leave the house they were in since well before Jesus’ death two days earlier. But all of a sudden, there he is; and his first word to them is “peace.” But the word means so much more than just peace – “don’t be afraid,” “it’s alright,” “calm down, breathe easy,” “I’m here.” The peace that Jesus gave them (and gives us) is in the knowledge that death does not have the last word.

The horrors they had seen him go through no longer had any power over him, and life triumphs in a more beau-tiful way than the mortal mind and body can contain.

At the end of verse 20 above, it says, “…the disciples were glad when they saw the Lord.” Well, of course!! Im-agine your joy at seeing your most dearly loved friend after you had been to his or her funeral! “Glad” scarcely begins to describe what you’d feel!!

These two “fruits” – peace and joy – are given to us by Jesus Christ via the Holy Spirit, and they can help us endure any and every trial, no matter how gruesome or difficult, because we know the end of every trial. That same Holy Spir-it surrounds us with the presence of the risen Christ in our fears, pains, and griefs. He speaks to us, “Peace be with you.” “I’m here.” “It’s go-ing to be alright.” Ah! JOY!!!! He lives, and so shall you!!

SABBATH SUPPORT GROUP!

Jesus said in Matthew, Chapter 11 “28 Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.” Many of us carry burdens that weigh us down in life that can just fill us with grief, anger and so many mixed emotions.

The next meeting will be Monday, March 16th, with Pastor Ben. At this Sabbath group, we will create a safe community for anyone who is going through hard-ship to come and lay down their burdens at the feet of Christ. We will have sharing times with scripture, mu-sic, prayer and other Christian resources that will hope-fully leave all with the Sabbath rest of the Gospel that those with heavy burdens are looking for.

This meeting will take place the third Monday of every month at 4:00 PM. If you have any questions, please contact Pastor Ben.

BROTHERS, BREAKFAST and BIBLE

Calling men of St. John’s! Our next morning men’s breakfast will be March 17th at 7:00AM. It will be a great opportunity to share in fellowship while eating breakfast together at the Village Inn in Wyoming, MN. We will have a de-votion to reflect on as a group. Mission Event Updates Red Cross Blood Drive was held at St. John's Lutheran on February 11th. Twenty-six (26) pints of blood were donated at the drive. Every pint of blood can save up to three lives, so with the Red Cross collec-

tion of 26 pints up to 78 patients in need can be helped. Thirteen (13) of the 29 presenting donors have past or current ties to St. John's Lutheran. Thank you. You made a difference.

Mn Adult and Teen Challenge choir visited St. John's Lutheran on February 16th and at both services filled our hearts with song and testi-mony. Thank you very much for making them feel so welcome, for

preparing and serving lunch to them following the 9:30 service and for your generous “Love Offer-ing”.

Meeting called to order at 7:04 PM by Linda Welch.

Linda Welch opened with prayer.

Minutes Approved

Vickey Nelson motioned to approve the minutes from

12/16/19, Sue Lein seconded the motion. Motion car-

ried.

Financial Report

Clarification on the gas bill being so low. We have been

changed from commercial to residential in the gas com-

pany’s system which impacted our bill.

Discussion about lower attendance and lower offering.

Pastor’s Report

Pastor Ben and Amber have welcomed a beautiful baby

boy, Theodore Alan Hollingsead on Friday, January

17th.

New Business: Property - Clark Kubat

There has been a change in leadership on the property

committee causing the committee and Wednesday Work

Crew to need some direction for completion of projects.

The biggest project is repairing the scaffolding and lights

in the sanctuary. Hal will be meeting with the committee

on Wednesday morning to get some details.

Food Pantry Let us all remember to donate food items into our Food Pantry. Local food shelves are always in need of non-perishable food

items to help the less fortunate. Also, don’t forget paper needs like baby formula, diapers, soap, toilet paper, etc... are always

needed. Buy one item for yourselves, but also buy one for the Pantry. Christian Outreach Committee will see that the items are

delivered to the local food shelf.

Sue Lein motioned to move Hal Satter from At-Large to

Property, Derek Fitcher seconded the motion. Motion car-

ried. Discussion: This will be until the semi-annual meet-

ing in May when a new property lead is nominated and

voted in.

Safe

A safe was purchased over a year ago and placed in Pastor

Ben’s office. It was purchased with the intention to put of-

ferings in after services to then be transferred into Patha’s

safe. Menards said they will take it back since it hasn’t

been used and is still in the original packaging.

Vice President

Linda Miller has resigned from her position as Vice Presi-

dent.

Vickey Nelson motioned to postpone voting on a new Vice

President until semi-annual meeting, Bethany Hardy se-

conded the motion. Motion carried. Discussion: If Linda

Welch is struggling with anything, she will bring it to the

council and a Vice President may need to be voted on be-

fore then.

Membership

Discussion about members leaving the church and possible

reasons.

Snow Plowing

Went with Tanner, but he is not doing what we need. We

did sign a contract. Clark went out to salt the parking lot

because of the excessive ice. When he was contacted to

address the situation, he claimed that he did not have time.

Vickey Nelson made a motion to revisit plow bids and

evaluate to see if we want a change, Hal Satter seconded

the motion. Motion carried. Linda Welch has been given

permission to accept a new plowing contract. Motion car-

ried.

Bids were reviewed. Rachel will get clarification on the

bid from Sunrise All Season Services to ensure that the bid

still stands and does include both lots, and that they have

time to take us on.

Stewardship

Nicole and Derek have had quite a bit of success get-

ting the directory updated. They have received more

Estimate of Gifts, a total of 17, but still very low re-

turn rate.

Annual meeting January 26th, 2020

Bethany will be gone, Derek Fitcher will be taking notes. Sue Lein motioned to adjourn at 8:30 PM, Harvey

Berg seconded, motion carried.

The meeting closed with the Lord’s Prayer.
