ST JOHN PASSION

INTRODUCTION As coronavirus swept the world, and concerts everywhere were cancelled, we realised that Good Friday 2020 might very well be the first without a sung live Passion since the middle ages. So Positive Note and Oxford Bach Soloists set about assembling an all-star cast for a St John Passion ‘from isolation’, the first instalment to be premiered on YouTube on Good Friday. With many musicians suffering during these challenging times, it seemed only right that this special concert be held in aid of Help Musicians UK, a wonderful charity who do life-saving work. Our thanks go to all the performers, technicians and administrators who have given their time and considerable talents to pull this all together.

And of course to you, our audience and friends. Thank you for your continued support of the arts, and for any donation you can make to Help Musicians UK.

POSITIVE NOTE DANIEL NORMAN Producer JEREMY HAMWAY-BIDGOOD Director CHRISTOPHER GOULD Sound This is the inaugural production of Positive Note. Chris and Dan have been collaborating since they met at the Royal Academy of Music in the 1990s. Jeremy and Dan were first brought together by Oxford Lieder for the smash hit YouTube film of Erlkönig. They went on to make a shadow puppet film, On Wenlock Edge, which Jeremy edits live during live performances of the work.

JEREMY HAMWAY-BIDGOOD is a puppeteer and puppet-maker. He is artistic director of Pangolin’s Teatime, which makes puppet-based work for theatre, TV and film. Past credits include puppet and animation content for the BBC, Comedy Central, Matt Lucas’ John Stanley Productions, Passion Pictures, and the Oxford Lieder Festival. Jeremy also holds a practice-led PhD in puppetry, with a research specialism in pre-modern Japanese puppetry, and teaches puppet practice and theory to practitioners and students.

CHRISTOPHER GOULD read music at Clare College, Cambridge and gained a scholarship to study piano accompaniment at the Royal Academy of Music. He won all the major prizes for accompaniment, including the Wigmore International Song Competition, the Gerald Moore Award, and an award from the Geoffrey Parsons Trust. Concert highlights have included recitals with Sarah Walker, Ann Murray, Lorraine Hunt Lieberson, Roderick Williams and Geraldine McGreevy at the Wigmore Hall, St Johns Smith Square, the Purcell Room and on BBC Radio 3. Christopher has released several discs as both sound engineer and pianist, and his discography includes three recordings of Britten songs with tenor Daniel Norman

The Oxford Bach Soloists (OBS) is a Baroque ensemble whose ambition is to perform, in sequence, the complete canon of J. S. Bach’s vocal works over 12 years. Uniquely, we offer a musical experience that converges composer, performer, and audience.

PAOLO TROILO Paolo troilo was born in Taranto in 1972 from Antonio and Lucia Troilo. He studied Architecture and Modern Literature at the Florence University, then in Rome at the European Institute of Design.

He won the most prestigious international awards in the industry, and in 2007 he was nominated by the ADCI best Italian creative together with Alessandro Sabini.

In that year Monsieur Jaques Seguela said of them: “I love these guys. they know that money has no ideas. Only ideas make money”. Self-taught artist. He started drawing by pencil at the age of 4, and never stopped.

In April 2005 he started his career as professional artist, and for a distraction (he forgot to buy brushes) he then starts painting with his fingers, the powerful figurative results of his finger-painting technique can be considered unique in the

world. Troilo dips his fingertips directly into jars of acrylic, black and ivory, and spreading color, definitely abandoning the “tools of art”.
