Blessings! Today is officially given the title Palm Sunday of the Passion of the Lord which names the two principal liturgical actions that lead us to the Sunday Eucharist – which is always a celebration of Easter. This is how we annually begin our Holy Week which includes the Sacred Triduum (three days). Today is supposed to begin with palms as we recall the triumphant entrance of Jesus into Jerusalem. Given the particular circumstances of this Lent, we must begin this Holy Week without blessed fronds. One more opportunity for liturgical fasting. However, despite the lack of palms, the invitation remains to make this a Holy Week.

Today we proclaim the Passion according to St. Matthew (Chapters 26-27). The evangelist pays particular attention to remind the hearer/reader that these actions fulfill what was spoken by the prophets. Another way that we reflect on the Lord’s Passion, especially during Lent, is with the Stations of the Cross. Perhaps a mantra during this Holy Week could be a formula that introduces each station: We adore you O Christ and we praise you. Because by your Holy Cross you have redeemed the world. As we continue to deal with the inconveniences caused by our response to the Covid-19 virus, we do so as people of faith knowing that, through the events we celebrate this week, Jesus has redeemed the world. We remain hopeful because passion and death lead to resurrection. The Holy Week tradition of the Chrism Mass has been postponed until it is deemed safe to do so. At that time Cardinal Cupich will bless the oils (for baptism and for the sick) and consecrate the Chrism used throughout the parishes of the Archdiocese of Chicago. Thursday evening’s Mass of the Lord’s Supper begins the Sacred Triduum. This year we will miss the ringing of bells during the Gloria and the ritual washing of feet. Importantly, we will still celebrate the gifts that Jesus gave us on that first Holy Thursday when the Lord instituted the Sacraments of Eucharist and Holy Orders. Fridays’ Passion of the Lord includes the proclamation of John (Chapters 18-19) and universal petitions. This year we will miss the public Adoration of the Holy Cross - the loving embrace of the means of torture and crucifixion that becomes for us a sign of the virtues of faith, hope, and charity as witnessed in Jesus. An act of veneration of a cross (or crucifix) found in your home would be most fitting. Behold the wood of the Cross, on which hung the salvation of the world. If we make this a Holy Week, then despite the obstacles, we will enjoy the promises of Easter. Let us continue to pray for one another and for our parish. Father Reszel

Christ became obedient to the point of

of this, God greatly exalted him and

As I look back over my Lenten observance, how have I truly died to self in order to live for

God in the service of my neighbor? What signs do I see of new life in my daily way of

thinking and doing? How has Lent prepared me to live more fully in God’s house as a

A Prayer to Begin Holy Week

Lord Jesus, as we enter into Holy Week

once again, I come before you to renew

my love and gratitude, and to ask you to

open my heart to all the special graces

that this week contains. I want to live this

week in union with you. I want the

mysteries of your Passion, Death, and

Resurrection to continue to transform my

life. I unite myself to you. I offer you my

whole heart, my whole life. Through the

Immaculate Heart of Mary I offer you all

my prayers, works, joys, and sufferings—

holding nothing back. I want to be

entirely clothed in you, to be conformed

to you. Lord Jesus, I trust in you. Lord

Jesus, I love you. Excerpt from A Prayer to Begin Holy Week. From the 2020 Magnificat Holy Week issue. © Magnificat – Used with permission. www.magnificat.com

Holy Week: Palm Sunday of the Passion of the Lord

SJC Palm Sunday 04.05.20 Page 4

Jesus remember me when you come into your kingdom

On Palm Sunday of the Lord’s Passion, we enter into Holy Week by hearing the passion narrative from the Gospel of Matthew. Even when we are not able to gather for Mass, we may reflect on the readings and allow Christ to speak to us through them. We see in Christ’s life, passion, death, and resurrection the contours of our own lives, the small moments and the consequential ones, and in this, we find great hope. Nothing is beyond the powerful love of God poured out to us through our Lord Jesus Christ. Now more than ever, the weary world needs to hear the good news of God’s love for us in Christ! How will you serve others in this time of social distancing? For whom are you called to sacrifice? How might you share the hope of the resurrection, even in this time of uncertainty? ©Catholic Faith and Impact

Living the Gospel Palm Sunday is a commemoration of highs and lows, exaltation and tragedy. We enter the church bearing palms singing Hosanna, and only minutes later we cry in unison, “Let him be crucified.” The liturgical juxtaposition represents fickle humanity. Profound themes of betrayal, trust, friendship, power, and humility are present in the gospel reading from Matthew.

The taunts of the crowd sound like school yard bullies or even the rants of thugs. Their mocking requests for Jesus to come down from the cross and then they will believe are derisive. The attitude that says God can save him if he’s really God’s son is likewise sarcastic. Humanity itself is reflected in the crowd’s behavior—in its willingness to put to death, after a sham trial, someone it turned on after only recently praising. There is a mob mentality at work and it should give us pause, not only for what happened in Jesus’ day but for how such actions continue today. False testimony, deceit, betrayal, even physical force and violence leading to death are all prominently on display. The crowd, humanity itself, is only too eager to believe the worst, to mock, taunt, scourge, and kill the incarnation of love itself. Then, humanity has the gall to test God, telling God to rescue Jesus if he’s really his son.

Of course, to be God’s son means that Jesus trusts the Father to the point of enduring all things up to and including death. God’s vindication will come not in bringing Jesus down from the cross, but in raising Jesus from the dead. God’s ways are not human ways. We demand action from God that we can see with our own eyes. But there were no witnesses to the actual resurrection, only the risen Christ. The response demanded by God of humans is faith. When faced with deceit, lies, violence, and death, God has another way, and we are invited to enter into this new way of life. ©Living Liturgy

Lord Jesus,

you were unjustly

condemned and put to death.

May we place our hope

not in human rulers but in you alone.

May we be prepared to speak on behalf

of those who face injustice.

Give us the grace to see your face

in those who suffer today.

In your name we pray. Amen.

Palm Sunday of the Lord's Passion ushers us into Holy Week. We process today, knowing

what is coming at the end of the week. Unlike that day when Jesus rode into Jerusalem

in the midst of an excited, but naïve crowd, we celebrate in memory of it all. As we

process into the overwhelming liturgies of Holy Week, the challenge is to mean it when

we sing "Hosanna!" We are asking to be one with him who emptied himself for us.

Praying the Stations of the Cross

SJC Palm Sunday 04.05.20 Page 7

Loving Jesus,

you took up your cross

in order to have mercy on us.

You walked the way to your death

in order to give us the freedom of new life.

We willingly take up our own crosses today

and follow you on your journey,

walking with you on this pathway of love.

Stir up within us the desire

to forgive our enemies,

to love our friends more deeply,

and to have mercy on others

in the same way you have mercy on us.

Dear Mary, Mother of Mercy,

be our example of courage now

as we face this way of the cross.

Pray for us as we journey here

that our lives might be filled with grace.

Give us clean hearts,

Holy Spirit,

and kindle within us the fire of your love.

Let us be thankful for

the merciful love of Christ

that led him to embrace the cross.

And lead us now

to the loving arms of God our Father,

with who we hope

to live forever and ever.

Amen. Praying the Stations of the Cross Bill Huebsch

The 14 Stations of the Cross represent events from Jesus’ passion and death. At each station we use our senses and our imagination to reflect prayerfully upon Jesus’ suffering, Death, and Resurrection. 1. Jesus Is Condemned to Death. Pontius Pilate condemns Jesus to death. 2. Jesus Takes Up His Cross. Jesus willingly accepts and patiently bears his cross. 3. Jesus Falls the First Time. Weakened by torments and by loss of blood, Jesus falls beneath his cross. 4. Jesus Meets His Sorrowful Mother. Jesus meets his mother, Mary, who is filled with grief. 5. Simon of Cyrene Helps Jesus Carry the Cross. Soldiers force Simon of Cyrene to carry the cross. 6. Veronica Wipes the Face of Jesus. Veronica steps through the crowd to wipe the face of Jesus. 7. Jesus Falls a Second Time. Jesus falls beneath the weight of the cross a second time. 8. Jesus Meets the Women of Jerusalem. Jesus tells the women to weep not for him but for themselves and for their children. 9. Jesus Falls the Third Time. Weakened almost to the point of death, Jesus falls a third time. 10. Jesus Is Stripped of His Garments. The soldiers strip Jesus of his garments, treating him as a common criminal. 11. Jesus Is Nailed to the Cross. Jesus’ hands and feet are nailed to the cross. 12. Jesus Dies on the Cross. After suffering greatly on the cross, Jesus bows his head and dies. 13. Jesus Is Taken Down From the Cross. The lifeless body of Jesus is tenderly placed in the arms of Mary, his mother. 14. Jesus Is Laid in the Tomb. Jesus’ disciples place his body in the tomb. The closing prayer—sometimes included as a 15th station—reflects on the Resurrection of Jesus Christ.

Jesus remember me when you come into your kingdom

Loving Father, your Son, begotten without sin, took on sin for us. You accepted his sacrifice upon the Cross and promised to transform our world in return. Grant the prayers that we offer with humble hearts, and help us to be ever obedient to the self-emptying of Christ, for he lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God for ever and ever. Amen.

Lord Jesus,

you suffered and died for our sins.

Thank you for the gift

of our salvation.

Amen.

The focus for today is the Lord’s Passion. Provide green construction paper, scissors, and a pencil for each child. Invite your kids to cut long palm branch leaves out of green construction paper. On each leaf have them write down ways that they can give Jesus thanks and praise. Discuss: Why give Jesus thanks and praise? Why did Jesus suffer and die on the cross? How did Jesus save us from our sins?

Christ’s Obedience as a Model for Believers The word obedience has its roots in the Latin word oboedire, which means “to hear or listen to.” Jesus hears and is obedient to God’s plan of salvation. Jesus accepts death on the cross for our sake because he is obedient to the plan of his heavenly Father. Christ is the model of obedience for all believers. Through the suffering, Death, and Resurrection of Jesus we are saved from sin. The resurrection opens the way for all people to new life. All this is made possible because of the great love that God has for us. What does it mean to be obedient? Why is Christ a model of obedience for all believers? How can you be obedient to God’s will? Good Friday was bad long before it was good, at least from outward appearances. God was being crucified by all that can go bad in the world: pride, jealousy, distrust, wound, self-interest, sin. It’s no accident the Gospels tell us that, as Jesus was dying, it grew dark in the middle of the day. Few images are more telling. As Jesus hung upon the cross, seemingly, light gave way to darkness, love to hatred, and life to death. How can that be good? Moreover, as he was dying, Jesus no longer seemed divine, powerful, and in control of things, both in terms of what was happening in the world and in what was happening inside of himself. The world was sinking into distrust and, if the Gospels are to be believed, Jesus, the incarnate God, seemed to be sinking into a personal doubt, one so gripping that it triggered the words: “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me!” What’s happening here? How can this be good? To understand what happened on Good Friday we need to separate what was happening on the surface from what was happening at some deeper place. The surface event was bad and can never by any imaginary be called good. Sincere religious people, good though weak, out of fear and weakness were selling out what was best in them and either helping incite the execution of Jesus or standing passively by and letting it happen. In effect, other than a few strong women who were not succumbing to fear or group-hysteria but who are too disempowered to practically do anything about it, everyone was aiding in the crucifixion of God, either out of ignorance, jealousy, or weakness. In Jesus’ own words, darkness was having its hour. The human, social, and political drama that played out on Good Friday was not good. It showed humanity at its worst before God’s seeming silence. But there was something deeper happening on Good Friday, a drama was playing out inside the recesses of Jesus’ private soul and conscience the result of which was antithetical to all that was happening on the surface, in the crowd. Inside his struggle to accept what was happening in that situation and to accept what was being asked of him, we see the ultimate moral and religious drama: love struggling with and them triumphing over hate, trust struggling with and then triumphing over paranoia, and forgiveness struggling with and then triumphing over bitterness. We see that epic struggle, first, playing itself out in his agony in the garden of Gethsemane where

Jesus literally sweats blood in the face of his options, that is, standing before every form of opposition, hatred, ignorance, and misunderstanding he must decide to either give himself over in trust or to flee in self-preservation. He chooses the former and, we are told, he is then strengthened by a divine presence. But acceptance is not exactly full surrender and the next day, on Good Friday, the final test takes place. The angel who strengthened him in Gethsemane seems to disappear when he is on the cross and a crushing dark night of doubt now racks him to the point of making him cry out with what seemingly sounds like despair: “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me!” His acceptance, given to his Father the night before, at this crucial moment, is made infinitely more difficult by the seeming absence of his Father who had, up to now, had been his very breath. In the face of that seeming abandonment, Jesus had to make a choice for faith, love, and trust at the rawest level, in ultimate darkness. What’s the choice? What does Jesus do? In the words of Karl Rahner, Jesus lets himself “sink into the incomprehensibility of God.” He surrenders to God whom he cannot at that moment feel or understand but only trust. Here’s where Good Friday turns from bad to good, Jesus surrenders himself not in bitterness, grasping, or anger, but in trust, gratitude, and forgiveness. In that surrender, the struggle between good and evil, the most epic of all battles, is won. Ultimately, all that’s wrong in our world will not be vanquished by a morally superior violence, no matter how virtuous are those who are doing the vanquishing. Good violence will never rid the world of bad violence. We will rid our world of those powers that perennially crucify God only when each of us, like Jesus, can let our bitterness, grasping, and anger give way to trust, gratitude, and forgiveness. And, barring being extraordinarily gifted by special grace, we will all, like Jesus, have to let ourselves sink into the incomprehensibility of God, that is, by trusting even when we don’t understand, by loving even when we are hated, and by forgiving even when we are being hurt. All of us will have our Good Fridays, not least in our experience of death. By every appearance, they will look bad, but if we give ourselves over in trust they will be good.
