A Note from the Pastor...

Blessings on this cold winter’s day,

We have made it through another Advent and Christmas season. Far removed from our thoughts is the gift of the Christ child that we received as a baby just a little over a week ago. Yet what an amazing gift we have received!

This gift of God’s love came down to us in the humblest of ways in the innocence and the vulnerability of a baby. When you consider the ultimate power of God, it seems almost absurd that God should come to us in such a powerless way. After all, this is the same God that created the world with a word, who breathed life into humanity, who created the stars and the great sea monsters. When we consider that the God of the universe humbly took on the form of a baby, it seems almost unbelievable. However, this is how God chooses to come, not as an all-powerful sovereign Lord, but instead as a powerless, dependent baby.

Christmas is a reminder that God comes to us in the most unexpected ways. The God of all power chooses powerlessness as the way to show us we are loved. The Lord of Hosts comes not to be served but to serve. The God of Creation becomes a part of creation in order to free us from the power of death and sin. In the dead of winter, when the darkness surrounds us and all life seems gone, God comes to us in the form of a baby and hope is born anew.

During this cold winter season, I pray that you might experience anew the powerful presence of the God who comes to us in small, yet powerful and unexpected ways. May you be moved by the power of God's love and presence to extend to others the gift of love that comes in and through Emmanuel, “God with us”.

I hope you all had a safe and blessed Christmas and may you begin this new year with the promise of God’s presence with and near you always.

In Christ,

Pastor Brian

A Note from Jeremy…

Happy New Year! 2018 was a great year. I've spoken lots already about how good the ELCA Youth

Gathering was this past summer, and about how much I appreciate that our middle school and high school

youth groups are getting together on a regular basis to not only to hang out and have fun together, but also

to spend time in intentional fellowship getting to know each other better and volunteering alongside each

other. I have confidence that God will continue to work and move in the youth in 2019 and I'm excited to see

where God will take us!

Peace,

Jeremy

Middle School Monthly

Extra! Extra! Read all about it! These events for

Middle Schoolers (6th-8th graders) have two parts:

Chat & Chew: (6:00pm-7:00pm) Eat food and talk

about important stuff. All middle school students

welcome. Come ready to listen, share, and have real

discussion.

Fun Night: (7:00pm-10:00pm) Hang out, play games,

have fun together. Typically involves eating snacks.

Feel free to come to one or both parts!

Next date: Saturday, January 5

Preschool News Happy New Year! Preschoolers are always happy to explore our Drama Room. It has a block corner, a

kitchen area, a writing center and a science center complete with a Russian tortoise named Tilly, and a

gecko named Geckomole. The Drama Room theme for January is Winter. The kitchen area has all the

fixings to make pretend hot chocolate, coffee and tea. The kitchen play food changes each month and

always has a few foods from other countries. The writing center is filled with cards, papers, and many

different writing utensils for children to practice their skills. Time spent playing is essential for children’s

development. A child learns self-regulation, communication skills, conflict resolution, and an opportunity to

act out scenarios they’ve seen or heard in real life. We hope your new year is filled with lots of time for play.

-Jana Bruhschwein, Preschool Director

High School Youth Group 9th-12th graders are invited to join us Wednesdays at

7:30pm in the youth room to eat snacks, enjoy

fellowship, and talk about stuff relevant to high

schoolers.

Come check out our new theme in January: “Operating System:

This year we are co-training with Pastor Rick Kramer of Faith Journey Lutheran Church in West Fargo. St. John folks will meet with 4-5 “Journey” trainees.

Epiphany Plant Sunday – January 20

On Sunday, January 20 join with St. John as we continue our “Welcoming Community” theme. On that Sunday you are invited to take home two of our Epiphany Plants: one to keep and one to give away. You can give the other plant away to a friend or a neighbor, or possibly even use the plant as an excuse to talk to someone who you haven’t spoken to in a while. The choice is yours! We’ll provide the plants, and then you are free to share your extra plant however you want to. The plants will continue to be available at church until we run out.

“Parenting the Middle Years” Small Group

This short-term book study/conversation small group will address the isolation and uncertainty many parents

feel as they confront “the middle years.” The purpose is to build camaraderie among St. John members

whose children have moved beyond early childhood and into the tween/teen years. The topic will focus on

sexuality and the ways that parents can support young people. Using content from two books as the

launching pad for conversations, this group will provide time for reflection and conversation about real-life

parenting challenges.
