Dear Parishioners of St. John, In this weekend’s gospel Jesus says: “This is how all will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another” This simple yet challenging message we are invited to im-plement into our lives. This coming Tuesday, May 21 at 7:00 p.m. I invite you to our church for the mission talk by John Ruane. John has been introduced to me by Fr. Tom McCarthy who did our last parish mission. I hope you will use this opportunity to learn about “Keeping the Faith! Living a Catholic Life in an Increasingly Un-Catholic World.”

This past week I attended the “Amazing Parish” conference in Cincinnati with Deacon Jim, Lori Lucente, Karen Leluga, Ginny Williamson, and Fr. Jacek Dada. We have posted some materials on our church Face-book. Feel free to reach out to any of us to learn more about our experiences. Let’s pray for vocations to priestly and religious life, especially the newly ordained priests and deacons of the Archdiocese of Chicago. Fr. Karol

Prayer for a Stewardship Parish Dear Heavenly Father, My parish is composed of people like me; I help make it what it is. It will be friendly, if I am. Its pews will be filled, if I help fill them. It will do great work, if I work. It will make generous gifts to many causes, if I am a generous giver. It will bring other people into its worship and fellowship, if I invite and bring them. It will be a parish of loyalty and love, of fearlessness and faith, and a parish with a noble spirit, if I, who make it what it is, am filled with these same things. Therefore, with Your help, O God, I shall dedicate myself to the task of being all things that I want my parish to be. Amen.

Fr. Karol and Fr. Michal Lewon blessed our mothers at each of the Masses on Mother’s Day weekend. We also heard from three of our parishioners talk about the importance of motherhood. Thank you Evonne Blakey, Donna Fieramosca, and Anne Kennerk for sharing your stories and highlighting how the Bible gives us examples of the sacrifices that mothers make.

GOSPEL MEDITATION - ENCOURAGE DEEPER UNDERSTANDING OF SCRIPTURE May 19, 2019 5th Sunday of Easter "I give you a new commandment: love one another." With these words, Jesus sums up the law and the prophets in one concise phrase. Love one another. After 2,000 years, you'd think we'd have it figured out by now! But all too often we fail in this com-mandment. Perhaps we mistake "love" for mere "common decency." Perhaps we've been betrayed, or our own visions of love have been tarnished or mis-represented in our lives. Blessedly, Jesus doesn't leave us without a guide. "As I have loved you, so you also should love one another." Jesus himself modeled what this love should look like. So what are some of the character-istics of the love of Christ? Humility, for one. St. Paul writes that Jesus "emptied Himself." In becom-ing man, Jesus puts aside the full splendor of the Godhead. Not only does he become human, but he takes on many of the mundane privations of human life. He spent most of his life in relative poverty - especially by our standards - as a common laborer. When he began gaining popularity as a preacher, he still traveled on foot and spent nights in other peo-ple's homes or outdoors. Jesus' love is generous. He was always available to the crowds and to being interrupted by people in need. He invested time in his disciples and patiently taught them about the kingdom of God. The love of Jesus is also courageous. He encountered many peo-ple deemed less worthy of human respect, due to be-ing public sinners or having a physical or mental dis-ability. Jesus was brave in breaking these social boundaries to show care and concern to the outcast. These traits are possible for us to imitate! Indeed, we are hardly identifiable as Christians without them. "This is how all will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another."

JOHN BERNARD RUANE Novelist for the Catholic Faith Keep the Faith! Living a Catholic Life in an Increasingly Un-Catholic World

MISSION TALK: St. John Roman Catholic Church, 301 S. Cottage Grove, Glenwood

Tuesday, May 21, 7 pm.

At a time when many Catholics feel they are being attacked and their faith challenged, Catholic novelist John Bernard Ruane will be giving a mission talk titled, “Keep the Faith! Living a Catholic Life in an Increasingly Un-Catholic World.” His talk shares the universal experiences of Catholics today and provides encourage-ment that will make you feel better about yourself and your commitment to God while building hope for the future. John Bernard Ruane is a critically-acclaimed author of four books and four stage productions, a long-time journalist (Sun-Times, Tribune), an award-winning senior public relations counselor and public speaker. His second book, Parish the Thought, An Inspirational Memoir of Growing up Catholic in the 1960s received rave reviews and the endorsement of Francis Cardinal George and Wendy Weise of Relevant Radio.

JOHN BERNARD RUANE

Novelist for the Catholic Faith __________ John Bernard Ruane is a critically-acclaimed author of four books and four stage productions, a long-time journalist (Sun-Times, Tribune), an award-winning senior public relations counselor and public speaker. Whereas John has given many talks about his books over the past two decades and done more than 200 media interviews (WGN-TV, WLS-TV, WGN-Radio, Relevant Radio, Ave Maria Radio, Chicago Tonight), a dis-tinctive nudge from the Holy Spirit has him now turning his focus toward promoting the Catholic faith to en-courage and support believers, while educating and inspiring non-believers to join the Church. He has created a mission to speak at Catholic churches titled, “Keep the Faith! Living a Catholic Life in an Increasingly Un-Catholic World.” His talks are written to share the universal experiences of Catholics that will make them feel better about themselves, while strengthening their faith and building hope for the future. This mission is similar to John’s second book, Parish the Thought, An Inspirational Memoir of Growing Up Catholic in the 1960s, which was published by Simon and Schuster and sold very well across the country, be-coming a favorite among Chicago Catholics. The book received rave reviews and the endorsement of Francis “Cardinal” George and Wendy Weise of Relevant Radio. John attended St. Bede’s Grammar School and St. Laurence High School on the southwest side of Chicago, filled with city workers like his father, Bernard, who immigrated to America from Galway, Ireland in 1948. John and his four siblings were raised Catholic by their devoutly Catholic mother, Therese, who grew up on the far west side of Chicago where she strongly considered becoming a nun. One of her friends, Rosemary Connelly, went on to become the head of Misericordia. Both John’s mother and father died young and he and his older sister, Maureen, raised the two youngest siblings. In 1982, John married his high school sweetheart, Charlotte, and they have four wonderful children, all practicing Catholics, who attended Catholic schools. In second part of John’s mission to reach the masses with positive Catholic images and messages, his fifth book is a novel titled, A Dangerous Freedom, an action-story about a devout Catholic who becomes an American hero by saving the lives of hundreds of innocent people. It is scheduled to be published later this year by Post Hill Press.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION

Frequent fliers today have many ways to accrue air miles, so one doesn’t always have to endure long hours in cramped seats to earn free hours in cramped seats. In St. Paul’s day, there were no such perks, nor would there have been any le-gal system for him to protest the shipwrecks he endured. He had other rewards in mind. The churches that he established in the catalogue of cities from today’s first reading must have been very different from one another. Language, culture, customs, religious history, obstacles to community, social challenges, the places where they met, their clothing, their bread and wine, all distinct, particular to the area. There were social customs as well: in a Christian household, the only place where a slave would be able to stand le-gally as an equal with the master would be at the table of the Lord, because at that table a new world of reconciliation was imaged. While Paul revered local customs, he was relentless about challenging the ways that people lived their Christian lives and how their worship reflected them. It is much the same today, as a global Catholic Church seeks to respect local customs and culture, allowing for differences in many things, yet always giving expression to the underly-ing presence of Christ, who binds us all together into his body. —James Field, Copyright © J. WHY DO WE DO THAT? - CATHOLIC LIFE EXPLAINED

Question: At a parish council meeting, our pastor mentioned the need for deacons. It is something I am considering. How do I know if I have a vocation? What steps should I take next? Answer: Any and all gifts that the Holy Spirit gives to the church are for the good of the community. As members of the Body of Christ, what one member does affects all. What the body does also affects each member. A voca-tion or call to ministry is tested and verified by the church. Through prayer, instruction, and service, a vocation is tested, and then acknowledged by the official call to orders or to service. If you are considering becoming a deacon, the first step would be to talk to your pastor. He will be able to give you more specific information on the program in your diocese, what is expected of you, and how you apply. You might also begin to see a spiritual director, someone who can help you with your faith journey and voca-tion discernment. They do so by focusing on prayer, your relationship with God, and spiritual practices. Final-ly, you'll need to see the diocesan vocation director in charge of deacons to apply. Best wishes!
