Introduction

First Aid competitions turn the knowledge from a First Aid course intopractical skills. Children and young people who take part in competitions willbe well equipped to deal with real emergencies competently and confidently.This handbook will help you to prepare for the competition and to gain themaximum benefit from it.

Competition programme

Each team will complete the team test and then split into pairs. Each pair willthen complete a pairs test.

In the final, the complete team (including the reserve if present) will competein a scenario card-based quiz.

Team test

The team test for a team of four will normally include two casualties andsometimes a bystander. The test will last for six minutes.

Marks are allocated for five main tasks.

Pairs test

The pairs for a team of two will normally include one casualty. The test willlast for six minutes.

Marks will be given for the same five tasks as the team test, except using onecasualty.

The scenarios

The scenarios used for the team and pairs will be based around injuries andillnesses shown in the Young Lifesaver Video (updated August 2006) orcovered by the Student Notes Booklet (August 2006). Typical scenarios,described below, will be read out to the team or pair.

1. Scenario example 1 (team) – junior or senior

You are walking through the campsite with your team members whenyou hear a cry for help. Upon arrival at the tent you see that onecamper has knocked a pan of scalding water off the stove and overtheir leg. Another camper who ran to help tripped over a guy rope andlanded on some broken glass.

2. Scenario example 2 (pairs) – junior or senior.

You are out on a camping weekend and you are getting things readyfor your evening meal. One of the group is opening a tin of beans;suddenly they let out a cry and drop the tin of beans onto their foot.

Full details of the scenarios and marking scheme are enclosed onseparate sheets.

The emergency phone call

This is not described in current Young Lifesaver course materials. To make theemergency phone call (if required) more realistic, when competitors makethis call, they will be asked questions identical or similar to those asked bythe emergency services themselves. Examples of these questions and themarking scheme are enclosed on separate sheets (see appendices).

Scenario card quiz

Teams will be shown one or more scenario cards, which depict anaccident/illness scene covered by the Young Lifesaver award scheme.Competitors will be asked questions, (each team member will be asked toanswer at least one question), for example:

1. What has happened?

2. What injuries/illness do they suspect?

3. How are they going to deal with the situation?

4. How are they going to help?

5. What if they are alone? What if they can’t get any help?

A typical scenario card and example marking scheme are attached (seeappendices).

Knowledge skills and understandingrequired

Your team will only be tested on the information shown in the updatedSt. John Ambulance Young Lifesaver Video and Student Note Booklet. (The booklet is included with this handbook.)

Junior teams will need to know the contents of Parts 1 & 2 of the YoungLifesaver Course (action in an emergency, DRAB, unconsciousness, recoveryposition, calling for help, emergency telephone call, choking, asthma,bleeding (minor & severe), shock, fractures, burns & scalds, and poisoning).

Senior teams will need to know the contents of Parts 1, 2 and 3 of the YoungLifesaver Course (action in an emergency, DRAB, unconsciousness, recoveryposition, calling for help, emergency telephone call, choking, asthma,bleeding (minor & severe), shock, fractures, burns & scalds, poisoning, heartattacks and CPR).

Judges

Judges are present to assess competitor’s knowledge, skills andunderstanding of First Aid on the set of the accident scene. To make sure thateveryone is treated the same we have agreed that our judges will:

1. Tell the competitors about the scenario before they go onto it andprovide them with all the initial information they need. If any teammember is unsure about any of the information given, they should askthe judge.

2. Be unable to answer questions when competitors are on set.Competitors can only question the casualty or bystander at this stage.

3. Provide relevant information to competitors when this is needed. If atthis stage competitors have any questions on the information given,they may ask the judge.

4. Look for signs that competitors understand First Aid and that anytreatment given is effective, safe and prompt throughout thecompetition.

5. Talk to competitors at the end of the test about how they handled thesituation and give hints on how to improve First Aid.

Marking system

The marking sheet will be similar to that attached and the marking systemwill be similar in form for all scenarios.

Results

All teams will be notified of the result of the competition at the event itselfor by phone within 24 hours.

Top team tips

The following are suggestions to help you obtain the maximum marks.

1. Your team or pair should work together to give your casualtytreatment that is effective, safe and prompt.

2. Read/listen carefully to any information given to you about the test.

3. Study the surroundings of the scenario carefully.

4. Watch what happens during the test carefully as the situation maychange!

5. Look out for more than one casualty.

6. Always try to treat the most urgent case first.

7. Keep talking to your casualty and listen carefully to any informationthey or the bystander(s) might give.

8. Enjoy the test; its main purpose is to help you practice the First Aidskills you have been taught in a realistic setting.

9. Remember everyone who learns First Aid is a winner, and has specialskills to offer anyone in the event of an accident or illness.

Rules

Our rules are designed to ensure that everyone who enters the competitionhas an equal chance of success if their knowledge of Young Lifesaver First Aidis good. The rules are designed to ensure this happens and comprise of:

Who can enter:

Teams of five students (four competitors and one reserve) who are all fromone school. Teams can be single or mixed gender.

Team members must have received all or part of their First Aid training attheir school.

For the junior competition, teams must comprise of members aged 7-11 (maxyear 6).

For the senior competition, teams must comprise of members aged 11-15(max year 10).

On the day, when you are waiting to compete:

Please switch off or hand your mobile phone to your teacher. If you use yourmobile phone your team may be disqualified.

Please do not take any notes with you onto the competition set. If you needto make notes whilst on set, there will be a pad for you to use and leavethere.

You may have to wait in a separate room or area before your turn tocompete. During this time please do not talk or phone anyone outside theroom or group you are with.

During the competition:

Please do not try to seek information or advice from any spectator.

Spectators are kindly asked not to comment loudly whilst watching thecompetition as this can be off-putting for the competitors. We also requestthat spectators avoid discussing the competition with any competitorswaiting to compete.

Disqualification from the competition:

Unfortunately, any competitor who unfairly obtains any advice orinformation that helps them to compete whilst the competition isin progress, may be disqualified at the discretion of the eventorganisers.

Photographs

St. John Ambulance often takes photographs/videos at competition events toprovide to competitors to remember their day. Sometimes we would like touse these photographs/videos in press/other media releases. To do this werequire written permission from children/young people andparents/guardians/carers if the young person is aged 7-15 years old.

Please return the attached St. John Ambulance photograph modelrelease form to us at the address below ASAP. If parents/guardians/carers, children or young people do not wish identifiablephotographs to be taken by us at the events please confirm this inwriting to us and also inform the organisers of the event of this onthe day.

COMPETITION HANDBOOK APPENDIX 1 – EXAMPLE SCENARIOS

Scenario example 1 (pairs) junior or senior

The Scenario:You are out on a camping weekend and you are getting things ready for yourevening meal. One of the group is opening a tin of beans. Suddenly, they letout a cry and drop the tin of beans onto their foot.

The Casualty:You have a small cut on the pad of your left thumb and a suspectedfractured toe. You are able to answer questions and use your own name.

Marking:Three options for marks:

2 should be given if action is excellent, effective, safe & prompt1 should be given if the action is fine but improvements are needed0 should be given if action is weak or incorrect

If a stage is missed completely, then no marks should be given for that stage.The comments space should be used to explain the reasons for marks given ifbelow 2. Any alterations should be initialled and the judge should sign thesheet after completion.

Make-up:The casualty has a laceration on the pad of the left thumb and bruising andswelling on one of their big toes.

Expected Treatment:Dressing on a minor thumb wound, shoe removed, foot elevated andcasualty sent to hospital.

Props:Old type tin opener, First Aid kit, a mobile phone, a blanket or a coat, big(empty) tin of beans, unlit campfire or barbeque.

Timing:6 minutes

Marks:Emergency call = 20%Injury one = 40%Injury two = 40%

Total = 100%

The Casualty:Casualty 1: You are sitting on the floor of the tent with reddening blisters onyour right shin complaining of severe pain and showing signs of shock.Casualty 2: You are sat on the floor supporting your lower arm that has apiece of glass embedded in it and complaining that your left ankle hurts.Both Casualties: You are able to answer questions and use your own name.

Marking:Three options for marks:

2 should be given if action is excellent, effective, safe and prompt1 should be given if the action is fine but improvements are needed0 should be given if action is weak or incorrect.

Props:Bowl, jug, First Aid kit, 2 blankets, mobile phone, unlit cooking stove,saucepan, simulated broken glass.

Timing:6 minutes

Marks:Emergency call = 10%Injury one = 45%Injury two = 45%
