ST. JAMES THE APOSTLE CATHOLIC CHURCH MISSION STATEMENT

Rooted in the Catholic Faith, in order to build up the reign of God, the mission of St. James the Apostle Catholic Church is to live out the message of Jesus Christ by worshipping God by serving the world.

Reminder: If you would like to use your debit/credit card for your weekly offering, please stop by the church office. You can also set up automatic deposits from your bank to the church.

Please consider including your St. James family when planning your will.

CALLED BY GOD

Today’s scriptures invite us to listen to two calls. The first is the call issued by the LORD to the prophet Amos, the “shepherd and a dresser of syca-mores” (Amos 7:14). The second is the call the Lord Jesus issued to the Twelve, whom he sent out “two by two” (Mark 6:7). These faithful people responded to the call, prophesying and preaching to the people to whom they had been sent. Each of us received a call when we were baptized. The second reading invites us to ponder that call as we are reminded that we are chosen in Christ and that, in love, God “destined us for adoption” (Ephesians 1:5). As adopted daughters and sons of God we are called to bring the presence of Christ into our marriages, families, schools, and places of work. Let us be inspired today to say yes to the call we hear once again through God’s living word. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

Why Register In the Church

Many people attend Mass here at our church, but are not regis-tered parishioners. It is important to be registered and use your offer-ing envelopes so that if you ever request a letter, whether it’s for being a godparent, sponsor, marriage, confirmation, tax statement or any other purpose, we can check our records and see that you attend Mass here. This would also benefit you if you would like to have your child enrolled in next year’s Religious Education Program. If you are not registered in the church, we cannot issue or sign any type of letter stating that you are a member of the parish, even if you attend Mass here. If you would like to register and receive offering enve-lopes, you must complete our registration form. You may also use the parishioner’s updated form (green) located on the church lobby shelf for any changes to your address, email or phone number. If you have any questions, please contact the office.

"HOPE GROWS HERE" - Las Vegas Catholic Diocesan Conference - 2018

On September 7th and 8th, 2018, the Diocese of Las Vegas will once again have a conference. This year's conference will be held at the South Point Hotel & Casino. This exciting and spiri-tual event is an opportunity to connect with our brothers and sisters from all across the Diocese. There will be inspirational speakers, presenters sharing with us information to help deepen our understanding and practice of the faith, exhibitors showing us the latest books, videos, and other materials concerning our Catholic religion, as well as, worship and prayer services with lively music. If you would like to attend this conference, there are registra-tion booklets on the counter out in the gathering space. From June 2 - July 15 the registration fee is $75. From July 16 to the conference day it's $85, so get your registration in early. Our goal is to have at least 50 parishioners from St. James attending this conference. We hope we will reach this goal so that everyone will know that at St. James the Apostle, "HOPE GROWS HERE."

~~ Pastor’s Message ~~

Summer Dress Now that summer is here, there is a tendency for some to dress immodestly in warmer weather. In all the areas of our lives, we should offer Christ our best and the same is true of our dress. We should not dress in a flashy way that brings attention to ourselves, and not in a provocative way, by showing more flesh. So, a friendly reminder, please keep a little more covered up for Mass.

Respectfulness in the Sanctuary and the Vestibule Please refrain from talking during Mass. Also the vestibule is an extension of the Sanctuary when Mass is going on. There are parishioners and little ones in the vestibule who want to participate in the Mass but need to sit in the vestibule. If there is a need to discuss other matters, please do so outside. Thank you.

Dear Parishioners and Friends of St. James, I FINALLY MET SISTER DEBORAH! It was Sunday, July 1, when I traveled to Santa Maria, California, for the Jubilee Celebration of Sr. Deborah and four other sisters of her Franciscan community. Before Mass I finally got to meet the famous Sr. Deborah Lockwood! What a great privilege to meet such an inspir-ing woman who spent one half of her religious life at St. James the Apostle! She was here for 25 years, which is one third of our parish’s existence! The impact of her time and ministry here at St. James is still very much felt.

The picture was taken before Mass when the sisters gathered in the courtyard of the Marian Regional Medical Center for the pinning of the corsages. Pictured from left to right are Bea Soares, Birdie Ray, Arsenia Egan, Sr. Deborah, Norma Savage, and yours truly. The Mass was beautiful, and after Communion, Arsenia, Norma and Sr. Deborah sang a Gospel Hymn that delighted everyone! It was a beautiful time for everyone to appreciate the gratitude that St. James has for having had the privilege of Sr. Deborah among us for so many years. Following Mass there was a delicious outdoor cookout at Marian Con-vent not far away from the hospital. Many people came up to “our” table to thank all of us for making the long trip to celebrate with the sisters. So, I’m so happy that I finally got to meet the famous Sr. Deborah! I’m always so happy to participate in these jubilee celebrations of reli-gious women, because without them and all their ministries through the years, the Church would not be where it is. The impact religious women have made in the areas of health care, education, religious formation, spiritual direction (the list can go on and on…) is invalu-able. It’s my prayer that more young women might consider joining their ranks and continue to make an impact in the here and now. So, please remember to pray for more young women to consider life as a religious sister. The possibilities are endless and exciting! And, let’s face it, the rewards are, literally, “out of this world!”

Peace always,

Fr. James Michael Jankowski Pastor
