Failure to observe individual days of penance is not considered serious, but failure to observe any penitential days at all or a substantial number of such days must be considered serious. During Lent, the Church encourages attendance at daily Mass, self-imposed times of fasting, and generosity to local, national, and worldwide programs of sharing. Those that are excused from fast and abstinence outside the age limits include the physically or mentally ill including individuals suffering from chronic illness- es such as diabetes. Also excluded are pregnant or nursing women. In all cases, common sense should prevail, and ill persons should not further jeopardize their health by fasting.

Lenten Regulations on Fast and Abstinence Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of Lent. The following fasting and absti-nence regulations are observed:

Abstinence from meat is observed on Ash Wednesday, Good Friday, and all the Fridays of Lent by all Catholics 14 years of age and older.

Fasting is observed on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday by all Catholics who are 18 years of age but not yet 59 years of age. Those bound by this rule may take only one full meal. Two smaller meals are permitted as necessary to maintain strength according to one's needs, but eating solid foods between meals is not permitted.

The special Paschal fast and abstinence are observed on Good Friday and, where possible, on Holy Saturday. On these days, Christians prepare themselves by these disciplines in anticipation of the renewal of their baptismal commitment on Easter.

From its earliest days, the Church has urged the baptized and the catechumens to observe the threefold discipline of fasting, almsgiving, and prayer as a prepa-ration for the celebration of Easter. Those that are excused from fast and abstinence outside the age limits include the physically or mentally ill including individuals suffering from chronic illness-es such as diabetes. Also excluded are pregnant or nursing women. In all cases, common sense should prevail, and ill persons should not further jeopardize their health by fasting.

Call me at 558-0967. -Maria Young, Coordinator

HELP US HELP OUR SCHOOL ~ With the Spring Break fast approaching, I just wanted to remind parents that when you use your Target Redcard debit or credit card, you are

helping to raise money for St. John Vianney School. It is super easy. We receive a percentage of the amount of each purchase in the form of cash from Target through the Take Charge of Education program. Plus, you save 5% every time you use your Target cards. BONUS!! Just visit www.target.com/tcoe or call 1-800-316-6142 to designate our school. Our school code is 728. Most recently, SJV received a check for $1646. Since 1997, SJV has received just over $23,107! This money goes to Home & School to help fund school activities such as the Father/Daughter dance, field trips, Popcorn days, etc. There are now 96 card-holders who have designated our school already. Grandparents, friends and neighbors can also sign up with our school, using the number above. So if you are going to Target anyway, please consider using your Target Visa or Target Card. A big thanks to those who are already doing their part to make a great school even better!—Maria Young, Coordinator

FAITH FORMATION

February 15, 2015 ~ 6th Week in Ordinary Time Justice Challenge: This Sunday’s Gospel is about the leper who touches Jesus’ heart. While leprosy isn’t rampant in our communities today, many people suffer from the poverty of relationships which lepers suffered in Jesus’ time. There are people in our own communities who have no one who loves them except God. And they may not experience God’s love because they have no human love to help them recognize God’s love. They are the lonely, the alienated; some are scared, or angry or wounded. Your challenge this week is to take the compassion in your heart beyond your immediate circle of loved ones and extend that compassion to someone who is alone. What can you do as a family or household to bring love into this person’s live? And can you commit to making it more than a one-time act of kindness and care? How can you continue to let this person know that he or she is not alone in this world, that God loves them, and that you do, too?

A Family Perspective ~ Feb. 15, 2015

Family life is about decisions. The leper in

today’s Gospel knew this when he said to Je-

sus, “If you will, you can make me clean.”

Jesus knew this when he said, “I do will it.” Love is not an

emotion. It is a decision to be with and for another person in

“good times and bad,” even when we don’t feel like it.

COME JOIN THE SUNDAY SCRIPTURE REFLECTION GROUP~

Sunday Scripture Reflections is a group that meets once a week to thoroughly break open the readings from the Sun-day Mass. If you have ever wondered about the meaning of a peculiar saying of the Old Testament, or maybe the back-story of one of St. Paul’s letters, or even why the readings are chosen for each Sunday, you may enjoy this group. We meet every Tuesday morning from 10:00 AM –11:30 AM in the Parish Office conference Room 1. Everyone is wel-come. Cost is FREE! For questions or more information, please call Rose Hoffman at 532-2175 or Don Keil at 304-5443.

“We are all His children.” Acts 17:28

REFLECTION: Abortion has killed children who may have been great scientists, doctors, and inventors. Yet, every life taken by abortion is equally valuable. People do not derive their value from how productive or famous they are. The most ob-scure and humble life has as much intrinsic value, and as many human rights, as the most notable personalities in history.

PRAYER: Lord, I cannot begin to imagine the plans you had for

each aborted child. May we realize more deeply the value of

each life, even the most humble and forgotten.

Ash Wednesday ~ Ash Wednesday is almost

upon us. The beginning of Lent. The beginning of a time of reflection and preparation. The beginning of a time of joy. JOY!? WHY JOY?? Because Christ is tru-ly risen. Because our time of Lenten preparation is looking forward to the celebration of Christ’s Resur-rection and the promise of our salvation. Because dur-ing Lent we don’t pretend that Easter never happened. During Lent we look forward to celebrating that Easter resurrection in the best way possible, and we take this season to prepare ourselves for that celebration. We prepare by repentance and conversion. We prepare by making our lives more like Christ’s so that we can be one with him in his glory. CHRIST IS RISEN! LET US PREPARE IN JOYFUL AND GRATEFUL AN-TICIPATION

Faith in Our Future

THIS IS COMMITMENT WEEKEND!

This weekend marks the culmination of our Faith in Our Future capital stewardship

campaign. The fruit of our campaign committee’s thoughtful planning and your prayer-

ful discernment in considering a 3-year commitment to our Faith in Our Future cam-

paign will be realized today as we come together as a faith family to continue our com-mitment to the future ministry of our parish. This weekend we, as a faith community, confidentially begin registering our 3-year commitments to our campaign. Together we celebrate this momentous point in the life of our parish. Let us all contin-ue to pray that God grants us wisdom and guidance as we move forward by faith to do as Jesus has called us. May God bless you a hundred-fold in return.

Like good stewards of the manifold grace of God, serve one another with whatever gift each of you has received. ~ 1 Peter 4:10

MISSION OF THE CHURCH -

Of her very nature, the Church is missionary. This means her members are called by God to bring the Gospel by word and deed to all peoples and to every situation of work, education, culture, and commu-nal life in which human beings find each other. The members of the Church seek to transform society not by power but by persuasion and by example.
