Parish Events…

SCRIPTURAL THEME FOR EASTER SUNDAY OF THE RESURRECTION OF THE LORD: The significance of the empty tomb was seemingly beyond the comprehension of Peter and Mary Magdalen. It was the beloved apostle, John, who understood the implication. He saw and believed. When we trust whole-heartedly in Christ, we witness things that seemingly defy human comprehension. Easter is evidence of that. The love of the cross triumphs over sin and death. From humiliation, brutality, and pain come redemption and salvation. Alleluia indeed!

REMEMBER TO PRAY FOR THE DECEASED: Nicholas John Delich and John Edward Whitehead. May they rest in peace.

READINGS FOR THIS WEEKEND: Acts 10:34a, 37-43 Psalm 118:1-2, 16-17, 22-23 Colossians 3:1-4 John 20:1-9

READINGS FOR NEXT WEEKEND: Acts 5:12-16 Psalm 118:2-4, 13-15, 22-24 Revelation 1:9-11a, 12-13, 17-19 John 20:19-31

COUNTING OUR BLESSINGS

Due to our printer’s Easter deadline, figures for last weekend were not available in time for this bulletin. Figures for Palm Sunday and Easter will be included in next weekend’s bulletin.

Alleluia! Christ is victorious over sin and death! When we are good stewards of our faith, like St. Paul, we’re able to share this good news wherever we can; your generosity today and all year long enables the

parish to do just this. God bless you for your goodness.

Please consider remembering St. Ignatius, Hickory, Parish in your will. Catholics of generations to come will thank you for your thoughtfulness and remember you in prayer. By doing this and informing us that you have included St. Ignatius in your plan, you also become a member of the parish’s Heritage Society.

Dear Friends,

The Feast of the Resurrection of our Lord is a day of great joy and happiness. It’s the celebration of the triumph of our Savior and the assurance of the triumph of our faith and our Church which Jesus won for us. Thank you so much for joining us today. We see more folks today than we do any other day of the year. Whenever you come here, whether it’s just a couple times a year or every day—know that this is your “Home.” Our hearts and our doors are always open for you. Welcome, Welcome, Welcome! If there is anything the priests, deacons, and staff can do for you, please call us! Thank you to all who made Holy Week and Easter 2016 in the parish so beautiful and so very meaningful. I am thrilled, at our Easter Vigil, to welcome, receive into the Church, and confirm 16 parishioners who have participated in the RCIA program over the past months. Through the efforts of Cetta York, Seminarians John, Rich, and Ben, Deacon Lee Benson, Deacon Pete Calabrese, the RCIA Team, the Staff, and with the guidance of the Holy Spirit, these 16 individuals have a new home in the Catholic Church. May they each be blessed with unwavering faith, and may they always be at peace and “at home” here at St. Ignatius. Special thanks to our Choir, Cantors, Director of Music—Pete Anderson and Todd Twining, Organists, Instrumentalists, Contemporary Group, Lectors, Eucharistic Ministers, Greeters, Sacristans, Marthas, Ushers, Altar Servers, Church Decorators (Joan & Jerry Strickroth, and Nadine Longenecker), Bulletin Stuffers, Youth Group, our Staff, and my brother Priests and Deacons, Fr. Steve, Fr. Ken, Fr. Isaac, Fr. Michael, Deacon Ralph, Deacon Pete, Deacon Lee, Deacon Jim, Deacon Bob and Seminarian John. You have helped us all to experience the joy the Lord has won for us through the Resurrection. We are blessed by all your tireless efforts. To all who have extended Easter Greetings to the priests and staff—we are extremely grateful, and we thank you. May the Risen Lord be a source of strength, support, and hope for each of you. Again, Happy Easter. In the Risen Lord, Rev. Msgr. James M. Barker Pastor

From the Pastor

WELCOME NEW PARISHIONERS: Our next new parishioner welcome will be on Sunday, April 10, at 1:15 p.m. in the Madonna Room. If you have registered in the parish over the last six months, you are most welcome to attend and share in some light refreshments,

meet some staff and Pastoral Council members, along with learning some information about our wonderful parish.

PRAYER FOR EASTER

O God, by your power and might, you smashed the bonds of sin and death to raise Jesus to life. Send your Holy Spirit upon us to roll away the stones of discouragement and despair so that we might receive new life in Jesus Christ, our Savior. As we have died with him in baptism, so we seek to live with him, both now and forever. Deepen our joy as we celebrate these days, and strengthen in us the conviction that we need not fear

anymore. Amen. Alleluia!

LIFE IN THE SPIRIT: “You can follow a thousand catechism courses, a thousand spirituality courses, a thousand yoga or zen courses and all these things. But none of this will be able to give you the freedom as a child (of God). Only the Holy Spirit can prompt your heart to say ‘Father.’ Only the Holy Spirit is capable of

banishing, of breaking that hardness of heart and making it...soft? No, I don’t like that word…’docile.’ Docile towards the Lord. Docile when it comes to the freedom to love.” Pope Francis, homily of January 9, 2015 What does it mean to know Christ Jesus in a personal way? Find out at the Introduction to the Life in the Spirit Seminar on Monday night, March 28, at 7:30 p.m. in the Historic Church. Dear RCIA Class of 2016: Welcome to our Catholic Church here at St. Ignatius. I thank you so much for your choice of being with God and away from the devil and sin. I know you are a little anxious about taking this big responsibility on, but you must trust your conscience and the Holy Spirit will tell you what is right and what is wrong. Don’t think that you are worthless or useless. Jesus died on the Cross for us, because he cared for every single one of us. This is why the Church and my

religion are meaningful to me. I am very happy to be with God and that he lets me know I’m important as a person. I care for every single one of you, but Jesus also cared for every single one of us, and God forgave us for everything we did. We very much so appreciate you becoming a Catholic and trusting yourself with Jesus, the Holy Spirt and God. My favorite way to participate as a member of the Body of Christ is that I try to be fair and honest with my friends. My religion is important to me because I know that I will be safe and God will always help me with my choices. I promise that I will pray for each and every single one of you.

Thank you, Ethan F. (St. Ignatius 5th Grade Faith Formation class of Mr. Jack Schaefer)

FROM THE “GROWING IN FAITH SERIES”

EASTER IS A SECOND CHANCE

What if we could go back and undo all the misdeeds we regret from our past? Wouldn’t it be freeing not to just be forgiven for our mistakes but to be able to make things so right it is as if they never happened? That is actually the nature of God’s mercy. When Easter morning dawns, our new life begins and we start as new creations.

Here’s how to make the most of your second chance. Start off on the right foot: Go to Easter Mass and renew your baptismal promises. Take to heart your vow to renounce evil and embrace new life. Make an Easter resolution: Be a truly new creation. Keep all your good Lenten habits going after Easter. Take advantage of God’s bad memory: God’s perfect love means he does not bear grudges, keep track of wrongdoing, or hold onto ill will. When he forgives, he forgets. Stay close to the Sacrament of Reconciliation (Confession), and be confident that you are restored to full friendship with God.

Thinking of joining RCIA next September? Listen to what one of our newly initiated wrote about the RCIA program recently:

Anyone who has had the slightest inclination, curiosity, or desire to try RCIA, I strongly recommend that you take the leap of faith. I was married at St. Ignatius two and a half years ago to my husband, Greg. He was raised Catholic, and his faith has always been a big part of his life. I knew that getting married in the Catholic Church was very important to him, so I decided that we should go ahead and start our marriage in the Church, even though I was a little apprehensive about the entire thing. Greg never brought up the option of RCIA because I think he wanted me to make the decision for myself, rather than putting pressure on me to do so. After we got married, we would go to Church together; and it had crossed my mind that maybe I should really join the experience rather than feeling that I was on the sidelines when I came to Church. As we begin thinking about starting a family, I feel that I want faith and religion to be the center of our family. How can I expect my children to be present in the Church if I am not fully engaged myself? I knew that I still had a lot of questions and reservations, but I knew that it was the right time to take a leap of faith. It was the Sunday before the start of the program, and Cetta got up at the end of Mass to try to recruit some last-minute candidates. It had been on my mind, and it seemed too ironic that we went to that particular Mass; and in a way, I felt like she was talking directly to me. When we got in the car, I mentioned it to Greg; and he seemed very excited. I emailed her the next day and showed up at class on Tuesday, still nervous and apprehensive about the entire process. It has been such a wonderful journey, and I could not be happier that I decided to join the program. Greg is my sponsor and has come to every class with me. It has become a part of our routine, and I think we will miss our weekly Tuesday night classes. RCIA has strengthened our relationship as husband and wife and our relationship with God. I’ve learned a lot about myself and have met some really wonderful people in the process. I can’t say enough positive things about the RCIA program, specifically at St. Ignatius. If you are looking to get a deeper understanding of your faith or to join the Catholic Church, I highly recommend the RCIA program. You will only get what you put into it, but Cetta and the team really give you the tools to help you on your journey.

Sincerely, Emily Boyle, RCIA Class of 2016 If you would like information about next year’s RCIA class or a loved one, or friend would like to learn more about the Church, a new class is now forming for September. Please call our Faith Formation Office at 410-879-0959 or 410-838-0780 and leave your name and phone number; Cetta York, our Director of Faith Formation, will be in touch and will meet with you individually prior to the beginning of classes.

A YEAR OF MERCY WITH POPE FRANCIS Sunday, March 27 — Saturday, April 2

Sunday, March 27 — Boundless Mercy God is infinite love, boundless mercy, and that Love has conquered evil at its root through the death and resurrection of Christ. This is the Gospel, the Good News: God’s love has won! Christ died on the cross for our sins and rose again. With him we can fight evil and conquer every day. Do we believe this or not?... But that “yes” has to become part of life! If I believe that Jesus has conquered evil and saved me, I must follow along the path of Jesus for my whole life. — Address, Meeting with Young People, October 4, 2013

Monday, March 28 — Evangelized by the Poor We need to let ourselves be evangelized by [the poor]. The New Evangelization is an invitation to acknowledge the saving power at work in their lives and to put them at the center of the Church’s pilgrim way. We are called to find Christ in them, to lend our voice to their causes, but also to be their friends, to listen to them, to speak for them, and to embrace the mysterious wisdom which God wishes to share with us through them. — Evangelii Gaudium

Tuesday, March 29 — Am I Like One of Them? [In the reading of the Passion], we [hear] many, many names. The group of leaders, some priests, the Pharisees, the teachers of the law, who had decided to kill Jesus. They were waiting for the chance to arrest him. Am I like one of them? — Homily, April 13, 2014

Wednesday, March 30 — No Christianity Without the Cross Christianity is not a philosophical doctrine, it is not a program of life that enables one to be well formed and to make peace. These are its consequences. Christianity is a person, a person lifted up on the cross. A person who emptied himself to save us. He took on sin. And so just as in the desert sin was lifted up, here God made man was lifted up for us. And all of our sins were there…. [Therefore] one cannot understand Christianity without understanding this profound humiliation of the Son of God, who humbled himself and made himself a servant unto death on the cross…. Thanks to the mercy of God, we glory in Christ Crucified. And that is why there is no Christianity without the Cross, and there is no Cross without Jesus Christ. — Homily, Domus Sanctae Marthae, April 8, 2014

Thursday, March 31 — He Became Poor [God] does not reveal himself cloaked in worldly power and wealth but rather in weakness and poverty: “though He was rich, yet for your sake he became poor….” Christ, the eternal Son of God, one with the Father in power and glory, chose to be poor; he came amongst us and drew near to each of us; he set aside his glory and emptied himself so that he could be like us in all things (cf. Phil. 2:7; Heb. 4:15). God’s becoming man is a great mystery! But the reason for all this is his love, a love which is grace, generosity, a desire to draw near, a love which does not hesitate to offer itself in sacrifice for the beloved. — Lenten Message 2014

Friday, April 1 — At That Critical Moment On the cross, when Jesus endured in his own flesh the dramatic encounter of the sin of the world and God’s mercy, he could feel at his feet the consoling presence of his mother and his friend. At that crucial moment, before fully accomplishing the work which his Father had entrusted to him, Jesus said to Mary: “Woman, here is your son.” Then he said to his beloved friend: “Here is your mother” (Jn. 19:26-27). These words of the dying Jesus are not chiefly the expression of his devotion and concern for his mother; rather, they are a revelatory formula, which manifests the mystery of a special saving mission. Jesus left us his mother to be our mother. — Evangelii Gaudium

Saturday, April 2 — Living With Joy And so, let us ask ourselves: How is it possible to live the joy which comes from faith, in the family, today? But I ask you also: Is it possible to live this joy, or is it not possible? A saying of Jesus in the Gospel of Matthew speaks to us: “Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest” (11:28). — Address, Pilgrimage of Families, October 26, 2013

Reflection: God’s mercy is boundless. Whatever you are facing, God’s love is there to conquer it. Think about your own personal trials and battles. Say yes to the love of God in each situation.

Reflection: Do you have friendships with the poor? What does having a friendship with the poor look like practically? What opportunities are available to you in your Church and community?

Reflection: Read Mark 14:1—15:47. Imagine that you are there at Jesus’ death and resurrection. What is God saying to you about mercy as you picture the scene? Who are you before the Lord?

Reflection: Do you ever get caught up in being a nice person or studying the teachings of the faith while losing track of your relationship with Jesus? Think about the Stations of the Cross that we prayed during Lent. They help us center on the mercy of God.

Reflection: Take some time to reflect on God’s willingness to lower himself to become man. In light of Christ’s own example, where is God calling you to be poor in your life? Where is he calling you to sacrifice for others?

Reflection: During his greatest moment of mercy, Jesus gave us his mother to be our mother. What is your relationship with Mary like? Do you consider her to be your mother? Take some time to invite her to be a more intimate part of your life.

Reflection: To live with joy and to give joy to others is a great act of mercy. Who needs your joy today? Turn to the Lord to recharge your joy in him..

How do I prepare to celebrate Divine Mercy Sunday? (April 3 this year) Our Lord promised that those who celebrate Divine Mercy Sunday will receive complete forgiveness of their sins and the punishment due them. Extraordinary! What must you do to obtain these graces?

Many people say the Chaplet of Divine Mercy beginning on Good Friday until the Sunday after Easter. Some also say the Novena to The Divine Mercy. Although the Marians of the Immaculate Conception at the National Shrine of the Divine Mercy in Stockbridge, MA, say this is not necessary, it is “good preparation.” Repent of your sins and firmly trust in God’s mercy by going to confession during Lent. Receive Holy Communion on the feast of Divine Mercy. Everyone agrees this is absolutely necessary. Venerate the image of Divine Mercy. Perform a work of mercy by either helping others or praying for them.

What about the plenary indulgence? In 2005, Pope John Paul II granted a plenary indulgence to the faithful who, on Divine Mercy Sunday, in a spirit completely detached from the affection for a sin, even a venial sin, recite the “Our Father” and the “Apostles’ Creed,” and also add a devout prayer such as “Jesus, I trust in You.” An act of mercy would be to offer this indulgence for a soul in purgatory. How do I say the Chaplet of Divine Mercy? First say an “Our Father,” a “Hail, Mary,” and the “Apostles’ Creed.” Then, using ordinary beads, say the following prayers:

On the large “Our Father” bead, say: “Eternal Father, we offer You the body and blood, soul and divinity, of Your dearly beloved Son, Our Lord Jesus Christ, in atonement for our sins and those of the whole world.” On the small “Hail, Mary” beads, say 10 times: “For the sake of His sorrowful passion, have mercy on us and the whole world.” Continue for five “decades” and then finish by saying three times: “Holy God, Holy Mighty One, Holy Immortal One, have mercy on us and on the whole world.”

What works of mercy can I perform in preparation for Divine Mercy Sunday? The corporal works of mercy are: to feed the hungry, give drink to the thirsty, clothe the naked, shelter the homeless, visit the sick, visit the imprisoned, and bury the dead. The spiritual works of mercy are: To instruct the ignorant, counsel the doubtful, admonish sinners, bear wrongs patiently, forgive offenses willingly, comfort the afflicted, and pray for the living and the dead. How do I say the Divine Mercy Novena? Copies of the devotion are available in St. Ignatius Church Narthex.

PREPARING FOR DIVINE MERCY DIVINE MERCY SUNDAY

(The Second Sunday of Easter) Next Sunday, April 3, 2016

Following the 12:00 Noon Mass, the Blessed Sacrament will be exposed in the Monstrance on the Altar in the Parish Church; and we will pray the Prayers for Divine Mercy. Following the prayers, the Blessing of Religious Articles will be given and the Monstrance will be returned to the Historic Church for our usual Sunday Eucharistic Adoration. All are welcome!

A PARENTING OPPORTUNITY Easter is the perfect time of the year to give the children in your life new memories about their faith. We have been so blessed by God to have this wonderful manner of being able to think back to the past and remember events and people in our lives that made a difference. You can

make a difference in your child’s life, too, by helping him or her experience the greatest love of all, Jesus Christ. Each Easter we have the opportunity to tell the story of how God sent His only Son, Jesus, to show and teach us how to live. Jesus is our Hero! He is the Risen Savior of the world! He suffered on the cross for us and rose from the dead! He is the person we should want to follow. He was kind and loving. He encouraged all he met to stop their sinful behavior and turn to God. He came to show us how to live in peace and love. He brought us hope for an eternal peace and happiness in Heaven with Him. Bring your children to church as much as possible. Share your good Easter memories with your children, and tell them why Easter is so very important to our faith. Make a loving Easter Memory for them, that they can share with their children some day.

HELP MAKE MOTHER’S DAY SPECIAL—For a Special Group of “Soon-to-be” New Moms: the Moms groups of St. Ignatius and St. Mark are working together to prepare gift bags for women to receive help at the Pregnancy Center North in Baltimore. The items in these bags will be

gifts “for the moms” to give them something special to help them enjoy their baby and their new state in life! Donations will be collected outside the front of the Church before and after Masses on the weekend of April 30/May 1. The following items would be greatly appreciated!

Faith Formation Registration for next year will open AApril 1st

The Catechesis of the Good Shepherd is a Catholic faith formation program for young children, ages 3-5, that fosters their faith journey via quiet work as they re lect on scripture. Weekly lessons take place in the “Atrium” — a special “welcoming place” for children to pray and prepare for greater participation in the Mass. The children are led in scripture re lection and prayer as they learn to work quietly and independently with the various materials for pondering the scriptures, the Mass, and the gifts of the church. There are small igures to work with when listening to scripture passages about Jesus’ life, including the infancy narratives and the Last Supper. They may prepare a model altar with items from the small sacristy cabinet, and they learn names of Mass articles including paten, Chalice, chasubles, etc. They hold real mustard seeds when listening to the parable of the mustard seed, and they work with sheep igures when they listen to the story of the Good Shepherd and learn of His wonderful love for each of them.

Cost is $115 per year. Students will meet Tuesday mornings, 9:30-11. Limit 12.

Why Catholics Celebrate Divine Mercy Sunday

By Rev. Alfred McBride, O.Praem.

On the Second Sunday of Easter of the Jubilee Year 2000, at the Mass for the canonization of St. Faustina Kowalska, Pope John Paul II proclaimed to the world that “from now on throughout the Church this Sunday will be called Divine Mercy Sunday.”

Pope John Paul had actively promoted the message of St. Faustina. In his 1980 encyclical on God’s mercy, Rich in Mercy, he developed a scriptural doctrinal basis for our faith in the mercy of God.

St. Faustina Kowalska: Apostle of Divine Mercy

St. Faustina, Kowalska (Helena Kowalska) was born in Poland on August 25, 1905. Helena told her parents that she wanted to enter religious life. At a dance, she experienced a vision of Christ suffering that touched her conscience.

In 1925, she entered the Congregation of the Sisters of Our Lady of Mercy. On February 22, 1931, Sister Faustina experienced a new and life-changing vision of Christ. She saw him wearing a white robe and raising his right hand in blessing with his left hand resting on his heart from which flowed two rays of light. Jesus told her, “Paint an image according to the pattern you see, with the prayer, Jesus, I trust in you.”

Her spiritual director, Father Michael Sopocko, found an artist to create the painting that was named The Divine Mercy and shown to the world for the first time on April 28, 1935.

Father Sopocko advised Sister Faustina to record her visions in a diary. She devoted the rest of her life to spreading the message of divine mercy and the growth of popular devotion to it. Her mystical writings have been translated into many languages. She died of tuberculosis at age 33. Pope John Paul II canonized her on April 30, 2000.
