8.0 WE BUILD OUR NAME AND SPREAD OUR FAME- SWAN STORIES
Celia Christie Samuels – Paediatric Consultant
Professor Celia Christie, Class of 1970 shared her experience at the St.
Hugh’s High School (SHHS) for girls where the balanced programme of
academics and co-curricular activities kept her very active. She
participated in the choir and the orchestra and started clarinet at
school, later moving on to study at the School of Music. Professor
Christie said that she learned leadership skills at St. Hugh’s, having been
a form captain and house captain throughout her school life. She also
remembered walking “2 x 2” to St. Luke’s Anglican Church once a
month, where she is still an active member.
Fidelitas – Loyalty, is a value of great importance today Professor Christie stated, noting that the
friends she made at SHHS remain her friends to this day. She spoke about her friendships through a
Book Club and that they even did their colonoscopies together – to support each other. Professor
Christie noted that these friendships and the loyalty we learn at SHHS help cygnets turn into swans.

12.0 TREASURER’S REPORT
As the former Treasurer had resigned earlier in the year, Ms. Sandra Shirley had graciously agreed
to prepare the financials. She highlighted several points in the unaudited Financial Statements for
2017 – 2018. She stated that the PSA had raised just over $3 million in 2017/18 and spent just over
$2million. The expenditure was for the fundraising activities e.g. Golf, Plays and also the
Association’s activities e.g. AGM and programmes e.g. Sponsor a Swan and Bursary Awards. With
the balance of just over $2.4 million brought forward, the year ended with cash in the bank of over
$3million which was mainly funds dedicated to the Care Centre Project.

12.0 APPOINTMENT OF AUDITOR
President Diane thanked Doreen Abrahams who had indicated that she was no longer able to serve
as the Auditor. As there were no nominations, she suggested that the Association would have to
advertise and the Executive Committee select an Auditor. Patrice Mitchell seconded the motion
moved by the President. A vote was taken and all were in favour and none against.
13.0 PRESENTATION OF THE SHPSA DISTINGUISHED PAST STUDENT AWARD 2018
Mrs Janet Barrett read the citation to Dr. Judith Dallas who was
named Distinguished Past Student for 2018. She was awarded
for her contribution to the field of Obstetrics and Gynaecology
as well as for her outstanding contribution to the School
through the SHPSA.
Dr. Dallas in accepting the Award said that she was honoured
and humbled to be placed on the list of DPS who have
contributed to our country and school. She said that she has
always sought to honour her country, family, school and
especially God in all she does. Dr. Dallas said that at St. Hugh’s,
she learnt that there is no limit except the sky – if you dream it,
you can achieve it. The challenge she said is to maintain
excellence and she noted that from the Principal’s report, the
School was doing so and as a Past Students’ Association at 85 –
we have come a long way. Dr. Dallas encouraged past students to get involved as Associations have
become more important in keeping schools on top and she noted that she had seen the SHPSA
grow in recent years with re-branding and vigour.
DPS Judith encouraged Sister Swans to not just look after others but also to ensure that we take
care of ourselves e.g. having our annual medical checks done. She said that we can encourage each
other through friendship and she mentioned her Etcetera Club in which herself and a few friends
met regularly for a meal together, among other things. She said that we each need to be careful of
what we eat; we should exercise, laugh and enjoy ourselves, relax and not harbour bad thoughts.
DPS Judith said that through our sense of Sisterhood – we can care for each other. Finally Dr. Dallas
thanked her family and her husband for their support; and the SHPSA for awarding her.

I am always excited when called upon to do something for my beloved St
Hugh's and what better time to have served than in 2018-2019 when the
school is celebrating 120 years of development of young ladies, from
cygnets to swans. There is such a rich legacy at St Hugh's to tell and I am
happy to be a part of that storytelling. The yearlong celebration started
with Sunday Brunch at Alhambra Inn on the 18th of November, 2018 and
continued with our Charity Golf Tournament, the Senior Swans Luncheon and
the fundraising plays.
We ask that all Swans particularly note the date for Homecoming Week November 17-23, 2019. During that week, we will welcome Swans from near and far, including alumni arriving from US, Canada, the UK and the Caribbean. The Homecoming events will feature a "Roll Call" at school and then will culminate with our 120th Anniversary Dinner and Awards ceremony. The organizing committee is working assiduously to ensure that Swans from every decade are entertained, reunited and engaged in the activities designed to include past and present students, staff, parents, well-wishers and other stakeholders. As I come to the close of my tenure, having spent five years as President, I am grateful for the team of Officers and Executive Committee Members who supported the vision and executed tasks and programmes towards achieving this vision. We took bold steps to deliver on our vision:- the rebranding of the Association, the amendments to the Constitution, the remodelled front office at St Hugh’s, the trophy Cases; the school sign - “Home of the Swans” (chief donor – Paulette Dunn Pierre) ; the expanded mentorship Programme to include the Sixth Form students and the pool

mural were some of the achievements during my tenure. The pool mural was secured primarily through donations from Class of 1978.
As we prepare to elect a new team, they will need your unwavering support to continue “to build our name and spread our fame”. We will always need inspired and committed volunteers on board. Financially, the Association is in good stead; however your continued support is needed to allow for the assistance and programmes provided to the students. We continue to enjoy improved relationships with the other stakeholders and will seek more ways to build on the legacy of the school. I am pleased that overseas Chapters have been inspired by the 120th Anniversary to form new Chapters. We welcome the Swans in the UK and the revitalized Toronto Chapter. For the next few years, a more strategic approach to giving (including corporate giving) will be necessary to support the success of the school and the students if we are to continue to “write a record for our school that time shall ne’er forget.” Fidelitas Diane Thompson Clarke President

Social Media
We continued to engage past students through our Social Media accounts namely: Facebook,
Instagram and in 2019 we activated our Twitter account. We utilised these facilities to share
updates on the Association, the School and Past Students.
The school will celebrate 120 years in November 2019 and we capitalized on this anniversary year
to share facts about the School and Past Students. Swans from all over were able to laugh,
reminisce and celebrate the rich culture of our Alma Mater.
We continued our “Swans We Celebrate” feature which highlights the successes of our swan sisters
during the year. As usual, it garnered tons of interest from past students. This we hope to continue
for years to come. We are encouraging past students to share with us stories as we continue to
‘build our name and spread our fame’ so that others may be inspired.
Website
Our very informative website www.sthughspsa.org which was launched in September 2018 is still
active. We are currently in the process of finalizing the merchant sales feature, which will allow us
to accept donations / payments online.
The Association is looking forward to further increase its visibility and impact, and as such we invite
Past Students to come on board to support our Public Relations Initiatives.

MEMBERSHIP
The Membership Sub Committee has been working alongside the other sub committees in an
attempt to get information on new recruits to the different sub committees in order to build the
database. In doing so, we are able to reach out to more Swans to provide updates on the activities
in the administrative year 2018-2019.
We were able to get the Swans together for the Swans Retro Lyme on
Friday, March 22, 2019. The evening was
full of fun and laughter as we sang and
danced together. Prizes were handed out
to the Swans who represented the retro
theme well. Prize winners included Karen
Ford Warner, Sandra Glasgow, Terri-Ann
Richards, and overall prize winner – Totlyn
Freckleton.
We currently have 52 lifetime members and approximately 48 members who renew (or ought to
renew their membership) annually. As membership dues are a significant source of income for the
Association in meeting its operational expenses, including programmes and activities, we implore
you to join the Association and pay your dues regularly. Towards ensuring the longevity of the
Association, is another reason why we encourage Swans to join the Association. We invite you to
join today. We intended to sign 120 past students in this our 120th anniversary year and we still are
way off the mark. Nonetheless, if each past student brings one to join, then this milestone can still
be achieved. The Association’s subscription fee is $3,000 per annum.
As we approach the 120th anniversary of this great educational institution – St Hugh’s High School
for Girls, we welcome you on board to help us grow from strength to strength.

DEVOTIONS
Our Association continues to interact with our Alma Mater and one such avenue is that of
conducting devotions with the students, once per term. Team members are Vivienne Williams
(Convenor), Carole Ellison, and Patrice Mitchell. We are assisted by the School’s Chaplain, Mrs
Nicola Elliott who advises us as to the dates and times for participation.
Venue for general assembly is the Library Quadrangle. This natural
setting places us in a frame of mind of “worshipping the Lord in
the beauty of holiness” and one cannot help but think of the
words of the hymn writer- John Greenleaf Whittier who penned :
“Drop thy still dews of quietness, till our strivings cease; Take from
our souls the strain and stress, and let our ordered lives confess,
the beauty of thy peace”
Christmas Term 2018 - Monday, 19 November 2018 Theme: FIDELITAS/LOYALTY
The theme for the week was Fidelitas / Loyalty as November 17 was Founder’s Day. Our Patron, St
Hugh- exhorts us to have- LOVE IN OUR HEARTS, TRUTH ON OUR LIPS and
CHASTITY IN OUR BODIES.
Bible Reading was from 2 John 1:1-6. The message was brought by
Tishauna Mullings, past student and Motivational Speaker, who
emphasized the importance of living for truth by being obedient to God’s
word and so fashioning our lives accordingly. Love in our hearts should
be reflected first- Love of God, love of our neighbours (others) and of
ourselves. One should be careful in the way we dress, the way we
talk- which send the wrong message. Also refraining from sexual
activities and respecting our bodies. Adhering to God’s commands puts us on the road to righteous
living.
Easter Term 2019- Monday, 25 March 2019 Theme: DARE TO SOAR
Past Student and Broadcaster, Yvonne Chin Irving brought the message,
which she exhorted the young ladies to “DARE TO BE LOVEBIRDS”,
taking her cue from the morning’s Bible reading 1 Corinthians 13.
She cited the case of teasing and bullying which takes place in schools,
homes and other places. We should aim to be our brother’s keepers by
showing LOVE for each other. “It is LOVE that uplifts and heals and
supports family, friends, members of our school community and people

near and far”
Love in action can be shown in the way we talk to each other, our actions with our classmates,
teachers and general staff at St Hugh’s.
Summer term 2019- We were not able to be accomodated as there were other groups to lead
devotions , and the term was short, giving way to time for end of year exams.
The Devotions Sub-Committee expresses thanks to the Chaplain- Mrs Elliott and Deaconness, Dr
Elaine Cunningham for their continued guidance and support. We also wish to express sincere
appreciation to our presenters Miss Tishauna Mullings & Mrs Yvonne Chin-Irving, Mrs Yvette
Johnson (Pianist), Mrs Angela Rose Lee and Miss Danya Williams (Singers) and Mrs Carole Ellison
and Miss Trisha Nelson (Readers), for their contribution to devotions. To all past students who
attended these devotions, thank you!

SHPSA BIG SISTER GROUP MENTORING
2018/19 saw the expansion of the St. Hugh’s Past Students’ Association (SHPSA) Big Sister Group
Mentoring Programme to involve Grade 10 (from November, 2018) in addition to Grades 7, 8, 9, 12
& 13. Unfortunately, the coverage of the upper grades was not as consistent as for the lower
grades. The rap sessions between Big and Little Sisters continued on 3rd Fridays from 7:30 – 8:00 am
with a regular group of about 32 past students. The Programme was initiated by the SHPSA in the
2010/11 school year with a focus on Grade 7 students and continues to grow. It encourages
students to become “Swans”, through monthly rap sessions with a past student as a role model.
There were 7 regular sessions for Grades 7, 8 and 9 and 6 sessions for Grades 12 & 13:-

SPONSOR-A-SWAN PROGRAMME
Entering into its 10th year of existence has not been an easy feat for the Sponsor-a-Swan
Programme, but thanks to the hard work of our past students, we have persevered.
Beginning in 2010 as an initiative of a group from the Class of 1975, the programme has grown over
the years and has produced numerous success stories. Funded by a contribution of $2,000.00 per
month by a sponsor, a needy student is provided with a personal care package along with cash of
$1,000.00 to assist with her transportation costs.
Without the assistance and generous support of our sponsors the excellent academic results that
are produced each year by this group of students, among other successes might not have been
possible. For this academic year forty (40) young ladies were enrolled in the programme and
benefitted from the sponsorship support of thirty five (35) past students.
On behalf of the young ladies who have benefitted from the support of their sponsors and other
past students, who from time to time make one-off contributions to the pool of funds, we extend to
them our sincere and heartfelt thanks. Without you there would be no Sponsor-a-Swan
Programme.

HEALTH AND COMMUNITY OUTREACH
The “Health and Community Outreach sub-committee” seeks to address
matters relating to the health and well-being of the students and to
provide medical coverage for our outreach/ fund-raising events.
The Charity Golf Tournament hosted by the St. Hugh’s PSA had its 4th
Staging on May 11, 2019 and has become an annual event. The
Tournament was held at the Constant Spring Golf Club and again, the sub-
committee teamed up with St. John Ambulance in providing the medical
post for this event.
This year the school entry medical were conducted on July 10-11, 2019. The
Student Medicals for the new students (Grade 7) is an annual event and is
our major project for the year. We had a turnout of eight (8) doctors, three (3) nurses, and seven
(7) other past students and four (4) Ancillary staff of St Hugh’s High school as supporting ‘staff’ over

the two days. A total of seventy-four (74) students were seen, compared to seventy (70) seen in
2018.
Conducted almost entirely by past students of St. Hugh’s High School, these medicals provide an
opportunity for the students to be inspired by their older Swan Sisters operating in a professional
environment in service to society. We would like to impact these students as early as possible at
their point of entry into the school and what better way to start than
through the Students Medicals.
The Optical Express Team came on board with the medicals for the fourth
(4th) consecutive year, offering valuable eye testing to our girls. We extend
our heartiest gratitude to the team.
We are grateful to our nurses Victoria Anderson, Swan Francine Dawkins
and school nurse Kenisha Atkinson for their assistance in the medicals.
Thank You also to our Swan Sister medical doctors Tina Hylton-Kong,
Dianne Lewis-Tucker, Patricia McLean, Yvette Pusey, Natalie Smith, Joye Taylor-Houston, Joy
Williams with whom I teamed to deliver the service. Most of these doctors have volunteered their
services repeatedly. Our hearts go out to others who would have liked to have assisted but who
were experiencing various life challenges.
This year the Committee is proud to have provided two more
partition screens for use at the Nurse’s Station courtesy of Dr Dallas.
These screens offer more privacy and comfort to the girls who access
the Nurse’s Station as well as provide a more professional setting
during the Student Medicals. Thanks also to Dr Janice Palmer
Tomlinson who offered the service of her office nurse to serve on the
two days of the medicals. We continue to contribute 40% of the net
income from the medicals to the school.
On behalf of the members of the sub-committee I would like to say Thanks” to the members of the
Executive Committee of the St. “Hugh’s Past Students’ Association and other past students who
have been very supportive of our ventures.
We look forward to another year of gratifying service to our Alma Mater.

FUNDRAISING
During the period, three fundraising activities were held with the major one being our 2019 Charity
Golf Tournament. We also had the successful staging of benefit performances: Basil Dawkins’ Play
- Maas Matt Comes to Town, which was held in February and Trevor Brown’s - Romi and Julie on
April 17th. The latter enjoyed a full house and we are grateful to our past students and well-wishers
who supported the events in one way or another.
This year our Charity Golf Tournament “Tee off with the Swans” was held on May 11, 2019, at the
Constant Spring Golf and Country Club. It was actually staged two weeks earlier than the customary
last Saturday in May, as that date had clashed with a major event on the golfing calendar.
The early staging did not hamper our activities in any significant way as the event was well
supported by the golfers fifty seven (57) and past students. Tee off with the Swans continues to
be our major fundraising activity and this year we benefited from cash and in-kind sponsorship with
a value of just a little over One Million Dollars and income from Golfers of One Hundred and
Seventy Seven Thousand ($177,000).
We extend our sincere appreciation to all our sponsors and would like to say a special thank you to
our major sponsors: GK Capital and Guardian Life Limited
A noticeable difference to this year’s event was the
Power 106 Outside Broadcast, which was partially
sponsored by them and which had Dervan Malcolm as
the host. He came well decked out in our school colours
and his energetic style and live streaming of the event on
Facebook added another dimension to a well-executed
golf tournament. It also served to heighten the
awareness of the SHPSA and its activities to support the
school.

Dr Richard Grant- President of the
Professional Golfers’ Association
sharing how impressed he was with
the Tournament.
One golfer, who was interviewed by Dervan, commended the SHPSA for staging a well organised
event and described it as the “best charity golf tournament of the year”! Kudos to the organizing
team!
The SHPSA could not have pulled off another successful Tee off with the Swans without the
commitment and dedication of the small hardworking team Diane Thompson Clarke, Terri Ann
Richards, Judith Dallas, Sheridah Dujohn, Trisha Nelson, and the team of volunteers who worked
assiduously throughout event day.
Congratulations Team and let us hope that next year we will soar to even higher heights!
Thank You All!
