Good afternoon and welcome to Edge Green Street for this North West Counties League, Premier Division contest against our friends from Padiham. May I open by welcoming our visitors I hope they have had a pleasant trip to visit us here at Edge Green Street, enjoy their short stay and have a safe journey home after the contest. It has been a week since we are all last here at Edge Green Street and it has been a successful week as we have gained a return of four points from our last two matches and we have hauled ourselves out of the relegation zone on the back of these results. We hosted Silsden here last Saturday and dominated the first half going close on numerous occasions and also surviving a scare from the visitors before deservedly taking the lead on the half hour mark when Charlie Stoker broke the offside trap and advanced into the area he rode a robust challenge that would have resulted in a spot kick and looked to have gone too wide to muster up a shot but he managed to find the net with the aid of the inside of the left hand upright. Phil Williams missed a golden chance just before the interval to extend the lead and Town were made to pay for this not long after the restart when Silsden levelled through a wonder striker from Joe Gaughan, which sent minds back to the nightmare at Silsden in October when everything the hosts hit seemed to go in as Town sank to a 7-1 reverse. Town were not to be denied and a fine move lead to a winner as Craig Fitzjohn’s centre was met with a deft touch by Cole Ashton on the front post to send the ball home and after surviving a brace of late scares as Silsden had efforts which struck the crossbar and upright Town secured wins on successive Saturdays. We then moved onto to take on league leaders Runcorn Town on Monday evening and this was a contest which many commentators would have suggested would have been a comfortable victory for the hosts. Buoyed from raising out of the relegation zone at the weekend the visitors were comfortable in the first half without posing too much of a threat in front of goal themselves save for a couple of half chances. St Helens took the lead on 63 minutes when Ste Edwards latched onto a box into the box and his effort was blocked by the home stopper with his face with the loose ball breaking to Phil Williams and his first time effort from 25 yards found the unguarded net. The lead did not last long as the visitors were made to pay by a former player when substitute Rob Whyte headed home from a rather generously awarded free kick to level matters. Both sides went for the victory but neither could register and a point apiece was the result which saw Runcorn extend their lead at the top and St Helens leap-frog Bacup into 19th position for 24 hours until Bacup won at AFC Blackpool on Tuesday evening. We face another difficult task this afternoon as we host Padiham, another side in the mix at the top of the table. The visitors secured a 4-1 home victory over Town in September and the hosts will be looking to secure a return this afternoon and consolidate or improve our position above the relegation zone. In Town Today . . . It might be hard to imagine today but in the immediate years following the establishment of Padiham Football Club in November 1878 the "Caldersiders" as they were then known were considered one of Lancashire's soccer pioneers and one of the better Club sides in England. The Padiham Football Club were in at the birth of the Lancashire Football Associations Senior Cup competition in 1879 , reached the third round proper of the F.A. Cup in season 1883 - 84 and beat Burnley F.C. 6-0, 7-0, 9-1 and 4-2 in their first four encounters . Gates of over 2,000 were not uncommon for the visits of teams like Blackburn Rovers, Preston North End, Burnley and other local rivals to Padiham F.C.'s ground which was originally situated on the banks of the River Calder at the

end of Wyre Street in Padiham and initally leased from the Shuttleworth family of Gawthorpe Hall. At present the site is occupied by the Potterton Myson Limited Main Gas factory and nothing remains of the Clubs original ground which witnessed many encounters with Clubs that later achieved Football League status. In fact it was the setting up of the Football League and the ensuing loss of fixtures with the leading Clubs, as well as the legalisation of professionalism within football that ended Padiham's initial decade of success. Being an ardent stalwart of the fight waged from Lancashire for the legalisation of professionalism in football, Padiham's progressive outlook at the time ironically helped fashion the stranglehold football finance came to have on small town Clubs, in hindsight it condemned Padiham to an ongoing fight for survival. Unable to secure the services of players able to compete with the bigger surrounding towns and cities, gates dropped and as a result reduced income meant Padiham had to restrict its activities to playing in the Lancashire Combination Football League and at times the local minor leagues. The outbreak of World War One curtailed Padiham Football Club's involvement in active football altogether at the end of the 1915- 1916 season, and the loss of their ground during the War meant that Padiham Football Club lay dormant. The rebirth of Padiham Football Club came about in 1949 with the opening of the "Arbories " Memorial Sports Ground in Padiham on August 20th 1949 when 1777 spectators turned up to see the Club's opening Lancashire Combination fixture of the 1949- 50 football season. In 1982 , Padiham Football Club became founder members of the North West Counties Football League , however in 1990 they left the league and joined the West Lancashire Football League where they played their football for ten seasons. Padiham Football Club returned to the North West Counties Football League for the 2000- 2001 season and to date have spent over £400,000 on upgrading their "Arbories" Memorial Football Ground. Padiham’s period back in the North West Counties League saw them initially consolidate their position with a couple of mid table finishes before their third season saw them finish fourth. A blip occurred in the 2003/4 when they finished 12th.




The 2004/5 season saw Padiham start a period where they challenged for promotion finishing fourth, fifth and third just missing out on promotion. Another blip saw them finish in twelfth position before securing a runners-up spot in 2008/09 which saw them get to the promised land of the Premier Division for the 2009/10 season. Their first season in the top flight of the Vodkat League Premier Division saw them win eighteen matches netting seventy one times in the process to secure a tenth position finish. Prior to the 2010/11 season there was a change of management with Craig Chadwick taking over in the hot seat from Graham Howarth. The “Storks” had an excellent season under the new manager as they finished 4th position in their best ever finish. Last season saw the Storks fall back down the table and finish the season in 16th position their lowest finish since their elevation to the NWCL top flight. The club saw the return of a former manager when Steve Wilkes was reappointed manager over the summer with Steve Cunningham as his number two. The club has seen a transformation in fortunes on the pitch as they are challenging at the top of the table for the title and promotion.

A Word from the Dugout . . . Good afternoon and welcome to Edge Green Street for today's league challenge cup second round game against AFC Blackpool. Today's game is our 3third home game in seven days! Last sat we drew 2-2 against Alsager Town; a game which saw us leading 2-0 until we conceded two late goals. It was again a bitter pill to swallow after playing so well in the second half. We then moved on to Tuesday and an away game (at Edge Green Street) against Ashton Town in the Liverpool Senior Cup. The game finished 0-0 and we bowed out 4-3 on penalties. Again, I thought we controlled most of the game and were unlucky not to win the game in normal time but we need to start converting our chances if we are to progress in these sort of games. As a team we are looking organised and hard to break down, which is something we have been working really hard on. Now we have to push on and start scoring some goals and winning games. I am a firm believer in if we work hard results will start to go our way and also you need that little bit of l u c k a l o n g t h e w a y w h i c h a t t h e m i n u t e w e a r e n ' t g e t t i n g . Today's game will be a tough encounter Blackpool will be looking to bounce back from a 5-0 league defeat at Colne last weekend. I hope everyone enjoys today's game and has a safe journey home. A welcome from the Chairman . . . Good afternoon and a very warm welcome to Edge Green Street for this North West Counties Football League Premier Division game against our visitors from Padiham FC. Let’s hope their players, officials and supporters have had a safe journey and along with our own supporters are treated to an entertaining game. Its been a good week or so for Town as the lads recorded their second win inside a week when defeating Silsden 2-1 here at Ashton last Saturday afternoon. The score-line may have looked tight but had Town taken all their chances they could have been out of sight by half time. On the flip side we could well have thrown away the points as the ‘Cobbydalers’ piled on the pressure in the final moments. A rare Monday night encounter saw Town travel to Runcorn Town and once again the lads performed well against the league leaders and eventually earned a point courtesy of a 1-1 draw. Phil Williams hit a thunderous strike to give Town the lead on 60 minutes but our hosts levelled through former Town star Rob Whyte. Runcorn take a trip into the unknown this afternoon as they enter the 5th round of the FA Vase against Walsall Wood and we wish them every success. There’s been a few new faces in and around the squad of late and our encounter at Runcorn saw three 16 year olds in the line-up. Charlie Stoker, who has been impressive in his opening four games, has joined us on loan from Skelmersdale United and opened his goalscoring account with our opener against Silsden. Joining him on Monday evening were Town Youth team players Jordan Dunne and Lewis Walker who made the bench and will know doubt benefit from the experience. Today’s visitors Padiham are having a fine season and will hoping to be in contention come the end of the campaign. In the reverse fixture back in September Padiham ran out 4-1 winners with Cole Ashton hitting the Town goal. Off the field we are holding a Race Night with hotpot supper next Saturday evening - an advert with all the details is elsewhere in this programme. Tickets are £3 and the whole family is welcome. We are at Squires Gate next Saturday and the kick off time has been moved to 2pm to allow us to get back in time for the fundraiser. Finally, we sadly have to report the death of former Town manager Peter Jones, aged 78 years (granddad of Paul Jones a member of our backroom team). Peter was Town boss during the early 1970s. Peter’s funeral will take place at St Helens Crematorium on Wednesday 24th February at 2.30pm. There will be a minutes silence prior to kick off this afternoon. Glossop North End v St Helens Town . . . Saturday 16th February 2013 - Glossop North End 3-4 St Helens Town

St. Helens Town won their first game since September, with a thrilling 4-3 victory at Glossop on Saturday. The architect of the win was Chris Lomax, who was absolutely outstanding throughout and the Leeds United scouts who were at Surrey Street to look at Glossop’s leading scorer Mark Battersby, could not fail to have been impressed by the Town wingman, who has been linked with a move to Runcorn Linnets. The game opened with a fourth minute goal from Battersby, who put the home side ahead with his 20th goal in fourteen league starts but, from that point onwards, the Town defence coped with everything he threw at them. Two minutes later, Chris Williams missed narrowly from a

free kick, following a foul on Ste Edwards and after 10 minutes Town drew level, when Lomax’s corner caused havoc in the Glossop box and Craig Fitzjohn scored from Edwards’ header. It was all St. Helens in the first half and three minutes later, Lee Crompton hit the bar from another Lomax corner. Lomax continued to tie the home

defence in knots and he should have had a penalty on 22 minutes when clearly fouled on the corner of the box. The same player weaved his way through two defenders shortly afterwards, before firing narrowly wide. Ten minutes before half-time, Fitzjohn was brought down on the edge of the box and Lomax’s free kick hit the bar, but Crompton netted the rebound to put Town 2-1 ahead and, with the last action of the first half, it should have been 3-1, after home keeper Proctor failed to hold Lomax’s shot but Edwards was unable to find the net from the resultant tight angle. Lomax came in for some rough treatment in the second half and was victim of a number of cynical challenges. As a result, Glossop seized control and captain Lugsden

equalised on 47 minutes. Full-back Allen then put the home side 3-2 ahead 10 minutes later, but Town came roaring back. Crompton scored his second from the corner of the box on 72 minutes, his speculative effort spooning over Proctor into the top corner to make it 3-3. There then followed a couple of narrow escapes for Town, when first McGregor failed with a shot from a very tight angle after a poor back pass left Town keeper Lee Novak stranded out wide and then Bond headed just wide when it appeared easier for him to score. The stage was therefore set for a grandstand finish and, this time, Town did not disappoint. Four minutes into added time, the ball was thumped into the Glossop half, with Edwards and Lomax up against one defender and the goalkeeper. Edwards drew the centre half and placed a glorious pass at the feet of Lomax who, fittingly, slotted calmly past the onrushing Proctor to seal the spoils.

A Brief History of St Helens Town . . . The original Town club was in existence from 1901 to 1928, but George Fryer and a number of local businessmen decided to re-form the club in 1946. They obtained a lease on the Hoghton Road ground in Sutton, adjacent to St. Helens Junction station on the Liverpool to Manchester railway line, took over a local St. Helens Combination team, Derbyshire Hill Rovers, signing a number of players from other clubs and entered the Liverpool County Combination in the 1947/48 season, playing against Everton “A” and Liverpool “A” and several reserve sides from the leading non-league clubs in the Merseyside area. Success was first attained in May 1949 when Runcorn were defeated in the final of the George Mahon Cup, played at the Prescot Cables ground. The following season, 1949/50, Town were elevated to the Second Division of the Lancashire Combination and they were promoted as Champions in only their second season to the First Division, where they ran up against teams such as Ashton United, Nelson and New Brighton, newly relegated from the Football League. Sadly, Town were themselves relegated in their first season and although promoted briefly again in 1955/56, they spent most of their early years in the Second Division. Improvements were quickly made to the facilities at Hoghton Road in the early years, but in November 1952 the decision was taken to re-locate to the former St. Helens Recs’ rugby league ground at City Road in order to further their ambitions of reaching the Football League. Initially, the move resulted in some encouraging crowds, but the club had a change of heart and returned to Sutton in the October 1953. The ground was purchased and further developed and a social club and floodlights were added in later years.

Town were Champions of the Lancashire Combination in 1971/72 season, losing only one game, finishing 6 points clear of Accrington Stanley. 1975 brought a switch to the Cheshire League, where they remained until the formation of the North West Counties League in 1982 and St. Helens Town is the only club to feature in the top division of that

league throughout its existence although, after a very good start, they very nearly lost that proud record last season. The club’s major achievement was victory in the FA Vase at Wembley in 1987. After a stuttering start in the Preliminary Round with a 5-4 extra-time win over Colne Dynamoes, further home successes over General Chemicals, Wren Rovers, Guisborough Town and Wythenshawe Amateurs, led to wins at Wisbech Town, at home to Rainworth Miners Welfare, away to Falmouth Town (after a replay) and in the away leg at Emley when, following a 1-0 home defeat in the first-leg, a 2-0 win in Yorkshire secured a Wembley Final against local rivals Warrington Town, who were dispatched 3-2 with goals from Phil Layhe (2) and Brian Rigby. St. Helens Town boast an impressive “Hall of Fame”, including legendary goalkeeper and former German Prisoner-of-War Bert Trautmann, who signed for

Manchester City over 60 years ago and who went on to play the game of his life in the 1956 FA Cup Final, despite breaking his neck in the latter stages. Bill Foulkes was transferred to Manchester United, where he had a glittering career, surviving the Munich Air Disaster in 1958, in which he bravely rescued some of his stricken team-mates. John Connelly, an England squad member in the victorious 1966 World Cup campaign, was sold to Burnley and he later moved to join Foulkes at Old Trafford. Other future stars, groomed at St. Helens Town, included John Quinn (Sheffield Wednesday), Geoff Nulty (Burnley, Newcastle United and Everton) and, most recently, ace goalscorer Dave Bamber, who began and ended his league career at Blackpool and who played in all four divisions of the Football League. Captain of the FA Vase winning team was Tommy O’Neil, who began his league career playing alongside George Best, Denis Law and Bobby Charlton at Manchester United. Town sold their Hoghton Road ground in 2000 to move in with St. Helens Rugby League Club at their Knowsley Road base. Their farewell appearance at Sutton produced a 1-0 win over Champions Vauxhall Motors and the initial campaign at Knowsley Road got off to a cracking start, with Town leading the table for most of the season, before finishing in a rather disappointing fourth place. Recent seasons have been more of a struggle, ninth place in 2009/10 being the best finish since. The last two seasons have seen Town slide to 16th in 2010/11 and next to bottom last season, when they would have been relegated, but for Flixton’s decision to resign from the league. Town begin this season under new manager Ian Granite, who has brought in a new coaching set-up and several new players. Whilst on the playing front, the club looks forward to an improvement this season, Town’s ground situation remains uncertain. Though the club have the benefit of an 80-year ground-sharing agreement with Saints, they have been unable to re-locate to the new stadium at Langtree Park and a third season sharing Ashton Town’s ground at Edge Green Street has had to be arranged to cover their immediate future as negotiations with Saints continue.

St Helens Town v Silsden AFC . . . Town make hard work of win Saturday 16th February 2013 North West Counties Football League Premier Division St Helens Town 2-1 Silsden St. Helens Town duly won their second game in three, to pull above Squires Gate and out of the relegation places, with a home victory over Silsden on Saturday, but they certainly made hard work of it. Chance after chance went begging on a very tricky surface at Edge Green Street, Mark Pye hitting three shots wide before Kieran Hoult saw his cross-cum-shot beat the keeper at the far post, only to miss by a few inches on 22 minutes. The next opportunity fell to Charlie Stoker, but he failed to convert a simple chance in front of goal. It was no surprise, therefore, that Town took the lead on the half-hour mark. Stoker dribbled into the Silsden box in the face of a heavy challenge that could have resulted in a penalty but, to his great credit, he kept his feet and netted off the far post. Apart from having a powerful free kick saved by Lee Novak at close range, the visitors hardly challenged the home goal. Hoult had a shot saved by keeper Watson on 33 minutes then, right on half-time, Phil Williams somehow contrived to miss an open goal, which should have put St. Helens two up. Into the second half, Town’s catalogue of missed chances lengthened and, seven minutes in, Silsden took full advantage when Joseph Gaughan beat goalie Novak with a speculative drive from the half-way line to level the scores. This should have been the wake-up call for Town but, the home side’s profligacy continued unabated and they nearly paid the price on the hour when McEneaney hit the post. St. Helens stepped up the pace in the final 25 minutes, but Chris Williams saw his shot go narrowly wide as Silsden failed to clear a corner. Nine minutes later, Craig Fitzjohn hit a neat pass along the dead-ball line




. . . Match Report and Photos and Cole Ashton scored with a deft flick from just before the near post to restore the home lead, but Town had to mount a valiant rearguard action to secure the three points, clearing twice off their own goal line in the closing stages. This should have been a comfortable victory for Town but any win is a good win at this stage of the season and it went some way to avenge the 7-1 drubbing Silsden inflicted on St. Helens back in October. Padiham are the visitors to Edge Green Street on Saturday, then comes another home game against Runcorn Linnets on Tuesday, as Town seek to pull clear from the threat of relegation. March sees an important double header with Squires Gate and Town will have to be at their best to open up a gap over their closest rivals from Blackpool. GLYN JONES

NWCFL News . . . Alsager Town New Clubhouse Launch Alsager Town's new clubhouse was officially opened at a ceremony held at the LAW Training Stadium last weekend. At 1 pm on Sunday, local MP Fiona Bruce performed the opening ceremony, watched by invited guests which included representatives from Spacebuilder (Modular Buildings), BAE (Radway Green), Bradoak Services, The Cheshire Football Association, The North West Counties Football League along with club members, family and friends.

The MP then gave a short speech to the gathered guests, and told them that she was very impressed with the work that had been done at the club in the re-building of it following the fire in 2011. She went on to say that Alsager Town were a credit to the area for all that they bring to it and that she hoped that the club can go on providing such a good sporting facility for a long time come. Chairman Terry Greer was given a huge surprise during the opening ceremony when Vice-Chairman John Shenton announced to those present that he and several members of the club committee

had got together and had decided that the clubhouse should be named The Greer Lounge in recognition of the sterling work done by Terry, together with numerous members of the Greer family who hold various positions within the club structure. Terry was presented with a plaque/sign by the Vice Chairman to put up over the club doorway. The picture shows Fiona Bruce MP with John Shenton (Alsager Town Vice-Chairman, Terry Greer (Alsager Town Chairman), Simon Gerrard (CEO Cheshire FA) and Mark Causey (M.D. of Spacebuilder Buildings).

New Management Team at Irlam A new management structure at Irlam has been announced, following the 1-1 draw at Chadderton on Saturday. Manager Steve Nixon has named Chris Boardman as his Assistant Manager, while Ryan Hutchinson will continue in his role as First Team coach. The reserves side will be managed by James Holt, who steps up from Assistant Manager. The reserve side will continue to be supported by the current coaching staff of Matty Kay and Michael Dodd.




NWCF League News . . . Squires Gate Appoint New Manager Squires Gate have announced the appointment of Dave McCann as their new manager. He replaces Gary Hargreaves, who left Gate at the weekend after seeing the team drop into the relegation zone following their 1-0 defeat to Stone Dominoes at the Royal British Legion Stadium. Dave was a Gate player under four previous managers, and was player/assistant manager to Russ McKenna until last season. For their Premier Division game against Bootle last night, the club’s Football Secretary John Maguire took charge of team affairs, but after watching Gate fight back to score two goals and take their first point since the 1st December, Dave said: "I am delighted to take the reins at Squires Gate, a club that I have affection for. I always look for their results on a Saturday, and watched them in their pre-season preparations. "Now the aim is survival and it is essential for Squires Gate to survive in the Premier Division. I will be looking for an assistant with a good knowledge of the game, but also with the same feelings as I have for Squires Gate, wanting to help get them out of trouble. We will require honesty from the players, and spirit. I saw very workmanlike performance from the lads against Bootle, who are one of the better sides in the league, but they were caught out by two first half goals, the first one in the second minute”. FA Vase Wembley Future In Doubt At a recent meeting of the FA’s Step 5/6 Focus Group, attended by our League Chairman Dave Tomlinson, the possibility of holding future FA Vase finals at a venue other than Wembley Stadium was discussed. Last season’s final, contested by two Northern League clubs in Dunston UTS and West Auckland Town, made a loss with just over 5000 people making the long trip down from the North East to Wembley on the day. Attendances have been declining for finals in recent years, although the predominance of Northern League clubs in those finals and the associated length of the journey for supporters of the clubs involved will have had an impact. In 2011, Whitley Bay beat Coalville Town in front of an attendance of 8778, slightly less than the year before when 8920 turned up to see them Wroxham. However, in the years before that, finals involving clubs from our League returned better attendance figures, with over 19,000 watching Kirkham & Wesham beat Lowestoft Town 2-1 in 2008, and 12,212 saw Whitley Bay beat Glossop North End in 2009.
