SEVENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME - FEBRUARY 20, 2011 Be holy, for I, the Lord, your God, am holy.. - Leviticus 19:2b
FOOLISHNESS Sometimes the idea of repentance seems old-fashioned, naïve, even foolish. But if you’re looking for real foolishness, you’ll find it in today’s readings.
We begin with Leviticus and the admonition, “Take no revenge and cherish no grudge” (Leviticus 19:18). We’ve heard that message before, of course, so we might forget how far it is from the so-called “practical realities of life.” St. Paul warns us about being practical, though. Whoever considers oneself wise had better “become a fool,” because “the wisdom of this world is foolishness in the eyes of God” (1 Corinthians 3:18, 19).
This “foolishness” continues in the Gospel: “Offer no resistance to one who is evil” (Matthew 5:39). In fact, offer the other cheek when you’ve been slapped. Hand over your coat as well as your shirt. Be like God, who sends sunshine and rain on the bad as well as the good. “So be perfect,” says Jesus, “just as your heavenly Father is perfect” (5:48). © Copyright, J. S. Paluch Co.
FEAST OF FAITH - The Opening Prayer
At the conclusion of the Introductory Rites of the Mass, the presider says or chants the words “Let us pray,” followed by the Opening Prayer. This prayer is also called a “collect” because it gathers or “collects” the prayers of the entire assembly into one. The Roman collects that we pray in our liturgy - noted for the brevity, clarity, and conciseness of the Latin originals - date from a variety of periods. Some are quite new; others reach back more than a thousand years. They are truly treasures of our tradition.
The Opening Prayer can be divided into four main parts: 1) the invitation, or “Let us pray”; 2) the silence that follows, during which each member of the assembly lifts up before God his or her own prayers; 3) the collect itself, spoken or sung by the priest; 4) and finally the Amen, by which the assembly says, “yes,” “may it be so,” making the prayer their own.
The collect itself almost always follows the same pattern. It begins with an invocation to God. A petition follows, usually very general. We ask for health, strength, wisdom, grace, forgiveness, faith, awareness. Every collect concludes by offering the prayer to God through Jesus Christ. With the Amen of the assembly, the Introductory Rites of the Mass come to an end. —Corinna Laughlin, © Copyright, J. S. Paluch Co.

PRAYER FOR REPENTENCE
Oh Most humane and adorable Jesus, Your endless grace and mercy flows forth. Before granting the gift of absolution to earnest repenters of sinful ways, You demanded a sacrificial compensation. For a wrongful act cannot be rectified until punishment has been accepted! Yes, for the salvation of my soul, Jesus, You accepted the price of the Cross! Grant me the grace to remain free of debts, my heart remaining flawless before You, making Your absolution truly worthwhile!

23RD ANNUAL CROZIER GALA MARCH 5, 2011
CAMELBACK INN, SCOTTSDALE
In 2010, gifts from the Annual Crozier Gala enabled the Foundation to grant more children the gift of a Catholic school education and funded seminarians to begin their journey to priesthood.
This year, with your help, we will be funding scholarships for tomorrow’s Catholic leaders, through the Foundation’s Christian Service Awards program. These unique awards help offset Catholic high school tuition, and are granted to 8th grade students who demonstrate Catholic values and a Christ-centered love for others through service to parish, school and community and their commitment to volunteerism. Through your generosity and support the Foundation continues to grow, generating new programs and services to secure our community and advance future generations of leaders.
Please prayerfully consider supporting the 23rd Annual Crozier Gala by purchasing tickets for yourself or for a priest, or with a donation. Information or Registration can be made over the phone by contacting the Foundation at 602-354-2400 or online at blacktie-arizona.com. Enter Event Code Crozier2011 (no spaces).

BOOK DISCUSSION ON FEBRUARY 27TH!
What was your favorite part? Was there anything you disagreed with? Would you like to share what you read with a group? JOIN US TO DISCUSS THESE QUESTIONS!
"Holding God In Your Hands", written by a Eucharistic Minister, is the new book for the month of February. Remember, we are changing the meeting date to the LAST Sunday of the month.
Although it won’t effect too many of the months the change will allow other groups to be a part of the discussion. We look forward to seeing the old and new participants in Rooms A & B of the Social Center from 10:10-10:40am.
ANNUAL LENTEN SOUP SUPPERS
The Lenten Season begins with Ash Wednesday, March 9th. For many par i sh ioners attending our St. Helen’s Lenten Soup Suppers has become a tradition. Through
coming together to eat a simple meal of soup and bread, we contribute to charity and, at the same time, build a spirit of fellowship within the Parish.
There is no charge for the meal. However, we ask you to make a donation of what you would otherwise have spent for supper at home that evening. All proceeds are given to Catholic Relief Services Operation Rice Bowl. Leaders of parish ministries are asked to contact Cathy or Dan Dowdle (623-979-2820).
The suppers are held from 5:00pm - 7:00pm in the Social Center on Ash Wednesday and in the RE Building on the Fridays of Lent.
Our parish is in need of additional Altar Servers. Please consider joining this valuable ministry. You will learn more about the Mass and you will feel great in serving our Lord and this parish. We are looking for youth who have received (or are going to receive this spring) their first communion. Please contact me if you are interested. You must plan on attending all 3 days of training, please notice in the first session, we are not training on Tuesday, March 29th. All training times will be from 4:00pm - 6:00pm in the Church. Thank you, Pati Coury - [email protected] or 623-486-1702.

TEN QUESTIONS ON THE TEN QUESTIONS ON THE ROMAN ROMAN MISSALMISSAL, , THIRD EDITIONTHIRD EDITION
3. WHAT’S NEW OR DIFFERENT ABOUT THE REVISED TRANSLATION?
The style of the translation of the third edition is different. In accord with the rules for translation established by the Holy See, the revised translation follows the style of the original Latin texts more closely, including concrete images, repetition, parallelisms, and rhythm. The English used in the Mass texts is more formal and dignified in style. Where possible, the texts follow the language of Scripture and include many poetic images.
In addition, the third edition contains prayers for the celebration of recently canonized saints, additional prefaces for the Eucharistic Prayers, additional Masses and prayers for various needs and intentions, and some updated and revised rubrics (or instructions) for the celebration of the Mass.
4. WHAT IS THE TIMELINE FOR THE APPROVAL AND IMPLEMENTATION OF THE MISSAL?
After the Latin Missale Romanum was published in 2002, ICEL began its work of preparing a draft English translation of the text. ICEL presented the first section - the Order of Mass, which contains the fixed prayers of the Mass, including the people’s parts to the English-speaking conferences of bishops in 2004. The USCCB approved the final version in 2006, and the Holy See confirmed this section in June 2008. The remaining sections were approved between 2007 and 2009. The USCCB completed its approval of the Missal in November 2009. The Holy See granted the final approval of the text in the spring of 2010. Cardinal Francis George, OMI, president of the USCCB, announced that parishes may begin using the revised translation on November 27, 2011.
The annual Charity and Development Appeal (CDA) continues this weekend. The CDA serves the basic needs of our large and fast growing community.
Through the information shared in the video last week we see that every dollar is important to those that rely on CDA to provide services to the community. Charitable organizations are able to provide assistance to families in crisis or need. Children are educated through Catholic schools and parish religious education programs. Our leaders, lay and ordained, receive the ongoing training and support they need to carry out their ministries. Fr. Bruce has shared how he was blessed in this way. Your gift supports all ages from the unborn to senior citizens.
Our parish goal is 100% participation. If you have not yet made your gift, please consider doing so today by completing a donor envelope or going online at www.diocesephoenix.org/cda.
Thank you for your support of the Charity and Development Appeal.
