Are Lenten Sundays part of Lent?

If the six Sundays of Lent are mini-Easters and thus excluded from the forty-six days from Ash Wednesday to Easter, on those Sundays are we excused from the fast or penance we chose for Lent? Also, I thought we weren’t supposed to have celebra ons, including dances and weddings, during Lent. Has that changed? Minus the Sundays, Lent is exactly forty days from Ash Wednesday to Holy Saturday. That number is precious because Jesus fasted in the desert for forty days. During Lent we’re urged to three holy ma ers - prayers, fas ng, and almsgiving. Ash Wednesday and Good Friday oblige us to fast and abstain from ea ng meat; the other Fridays of Lent oblige us only to abstain from ea ng meat (no fas ng). You’re correct about Sundays: We’re free to give ourselves a break from the penance or sacrifice we’re making for Lent. Freedom and spontaneity are an important feature of Chris an Living. Weddings aren’t forbidden during Lent, but I share your unease about dances during Lent, especially as parish events. Lent is the peniten al season of the Church year, a season of prayer and reflec on. True religion should form people to a sense of seasons and hours - of when to celebrate and when to tone things down for reflec on and penance. Fr. John Hamrogue, CSsR sundaybulle [email protected]
